  1. That early on, I think it’s very difficult to meet your protein goal without protein powder/shakes and protein-fortified foods. My go-to breakfast is half a container of Greek yogurt with half a scoop of protein powder for a total of 19 grams of protein. You can also mix unflavored protein powder into a lot of things like soups, refried beans, etc. I sometimes use Quest protein chips for a protein boost (I make taco bites using 1/3 of a bag of protein chips + taco meat + lettuce, tomato, and plain Greek yogurt, or put crushed protein chips on a salad). Since you can only eat small quantities, you have to eat mainly protein (typically meat). There’s not much room for anything else, even vegetables. I am 6 months out and still find it challenging to get 60 grams of protein per day. I still use protein powder every day. Part of it is that I don’t eat between meals; I guess if you snack throughout the day, you can probably work in some more protein, but I’m trying not to fall back into bad habits.
  2. I am 10 weeks post op and would appreciate any advice. My protein goal from dietitian is 70gram per day (she calculates based on goal weight of 70kg) I use protein powder in my coffee which provides 15 grams of protein. No problem drinking 2 or 3 cups over the course of the day. However I know I am not eating healthy. I am finding it very difficult to get my protein from actual foods as the quantity I can eat is small. Can you please share how you reach your protein goal.
  3. Took me 10 weeks. All depends on your insurance and surgeons requirements. If you are self pay, possibly faster.
  4. Yup, I called them I pay 10% until I reach my oop max. Thank you that really helps me figure out how much I will be paying on the 1st.
  5. I've just started strength training 3 days a week. I use the machines since I'm a newbie. Plus I'm 55 yo. I know that the machines aren't as effective as free weights but it's a start. I do 2 sets of 10-12 reps at a weight I find very hard the last 2 reps. I made the decision to start strength training after a DEXA scan showed I was a "skinny fat person" with a BMI of 22 but a body fat percentage of 37%. YIKES! I still do cardio (water aerobics) 4 days/week since my goal is to gain muscle while losing fat. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. If I could have half of your muscle mass at my age, I would be thrilled.
  6. Yes I have met my deductible, but not my oop max just yet. I think I understand you. I am still in my coinsurance phase so I would be paying 10% of my surgery total?
  7. Hi!! I was sleeved in July 2018. Been in maintenance for a while now. Since 10 mos or so out. My surgery was uneventful (in a good way) stayed overnight which really didn’t think I needed to. No pain other than from the gas bc it was laparoscopic. Home w no problems. Out grocery shopping four days later. I’m very thankful it was an easy road for me. I also hadn’t ever had any surgery to my abdomen before which made it a clean slate. Also followed pre op diet to a t so my liver would be shrunk and as I was instructed. I feel like It’s important to follow everything your Dr says to do. I wish you an uneventful surgery as well!!! Welcome to the club!!

    Low energy

Hi Lori - so happy for you!! yes, I am the same as you. I’m down to 154 and hoping to be 145 end of March and 130 for end of June. I’m also walking 13,000 to 20,000 steps a day and now doing weights at home. I can’t wait for gyms to reopen for variety. I also am careful of what I am eating and portion. eating very healthy. But will treat myself to something every now and then. But it’s small amounts. I still haven’t had pizza or bread. It has been effort on my part for sure. I’m the lowest I have been in 10 years! Lower than the band. I always wanted to be back to 130-135 but couldn’t get that last 20 off. So I think it’s going to happen with the MGB! Can’t believe it. And what a perfect time we did so. Once things open up I’ll be where I want to be. So very happy!
  9. Heavy Weightlifting completely changes your body!!! I’m 8 years post-op and I incorporate 5-6 days of weightlifting into my routine. I ONLY do about 10 minutes of cardio (10 minute run) each workout day, which in actuality is my warmup before I stretch and lift. I also incorporate hypertrophy (higher rep, lower weight) training into my workouts to help with muscle growth, but the most empowering part is getting strong and hitting new PR’s (personal records). When I first started lifting, I could not lift too much weight. The lower weight WAS my heavy weight. I would find a weight that I could rep 8-10 times before failure. My squats literally started with the bar (a standard Olympic bar weighs 45 lbs). Now, after 6.5 years of consistent training, I can squat 245 lbs, deadlift 320 lbs, bench 185 lbs, curl the 40 lbs dumbbells. I really wanted to fill up my arms & legs with muscle to lessen that loose skin (which I still have, but not so noticeable), so I worked hard. I researched, read, incorporated. I was—and still am—constantly learning, correcting, and incorporating. I learned how to diet for optimal muscle growth, which optimally includes 1 gram of protein per body weight and complex carbs, and good healthy fats. At first I didn’t know what complex carbs were, so I looked it up😂, picked out foods I liked, and incorporated them into my diet. I’m not going to lie, complex carbs are the hardest to consume because of their density (and my sleeve still works when I’m eating the right foods—freak’n sliders!), but I make it work by eating small frequent meals throughout the day (I eat about 6-8 different times, including shakes). I also discovered a supplement drink in powder form called Karbolyn (by EFX Sports) that would help me hit my complex carb macro goal. Anyway, long story short, when I first lost all my weight, I got down to 140 lbs, and a size 4-6. Now, I weigh between 155-160, and still wear a 6 (the 4’s are too small for my arms because they’ve grown with muscle mass 💪🏼😆💪🏼). I’ve literally shred the fat and have added muscle mass. And since 1 lbs of fat takes up way more space than 1 lbs of muscle, I’ve been able to pack on more muscle in the same amount of space. Weightlifting is where it’s at. Man or woman. I’m just trying to inspire women because women tend to fear lifting heavy and fear that they will look manly. I assure you, I do not look like a man. 😂🤣

    Non scale victory

I am totally dreaming of the day I get there. I haven’t been a size ten since I was in the sixth grade. I remember going to camp as a size 12 and coming back from camp at a size 10.

Day surgery and February 2 surgery date!

I am sorry to hear that some of you are having nausea and other issues. What is weird is that I never had any nausea, throwing up or anything. I had my sleeve surgery on 2/2/2021. People keep saying that they can barely get done any of protein shakes down.. I have been able to drink the whole 8 ounces from the beginning.. I can eat the puree easily.. and I am still hungry! It is definitely not head hunger as my stomach is actually hungry.. I can feel it. My pre-op diet was 10 days, all clear liquids the day before. Nothing to eat/drink the first day until after I had the leak test the next late morning. I am allowed clear liquids, two protein shales and 4 so-called meals of 1-2 ounces of pureed protein. The only time I feel full is after each protein shake. I lost around 5 lbs in the pre-op diet and 6 lbs since the surgery as of yesterday morning. Has anyone else had these issues? Thanks!

    Sleeve in your 20s

My starting weight was 396. Iost about 12 pounds pre op. My pre op diet was supposed to be 10 days. I’m saying supposed to be because I did good the first couple days then started fell off. Definitely could’ve lost more during the pre op if I hadn’t fell off. Everybody’s is different though. Some of the girls I follow on insta got to eat during their pre op diet, I was clear liquids only. I have not started to work out yet, I do plan on getting back in the gym next week since I’m about to be released back to work. My doctor wants me to just focus on cardio right now.

    Anyone for October 2020?

I had surgery 10/5 at 252lbs and am down to 202. I’m also eating around 700 calories a day. Everything has been good for me, but my hair is falling out like crazy. I knew it was to be expected but it’s shocking. Ngl, have cried about it a few times lol

    Newbie

Thank you for answering my questions. Iv been watching YouTube videos and read the forum on here and they have helped. I was worried about the lifting and the pain because I have two children that are all about mommy sometimes and the videos and forums that I have found don't say anything about the pain after unless you had complications. Iv had both scopes done before so is the gas pain you feel like that? My mom had the gastric bypass about 10 years ago and everything has changed so much since then so she hasn't been much help because now everything is done laparoscopic.

    February 2021 Sleeve Surgery

Hi 😊 Got my date yesterday, Feb 23. No preop diet (was totally shocked—doc said he’s found they aren’t necessary and feels they’re a bit barbaric 😳) just nothing to eat after midnight before surgery. One overnight in the hospital. Then, it’s full liquids after for 10 days.

    OCTOBER SLEEVERS CHECK IN HERE

I’ve gained 35lbs back, I speak with the office tomorrow. I had my son in January of 2019, sleeved October of 2017. Definitely lost weight from breastfeeding and got back down to 138, I’m in the 170s now. I’ve lost control of myself again.

    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

Yep - I am G-d willing having the sleeve done on 3/10.
  24. Hi all. I had a sleeve five years ago. Lost 110, have kept all but 5-10 pounds off. Surgery was fine and dandy. No issues until July 2020 i have had IBS for as long as I can remember and it got worse this past summer (anxiety issues). So I was taking Imodium a bit more often. I was active as heck this summer riding horses and paddle boarding. Eating fine (yes my stomach has stretched but nothing too crazy). One day after paddle boarding a decent amount, I was having bad gas pain. I suddenly got the worst pain I think I’ve experienced in my life right near one of my incisions. It literally felt like my gut had ripped. I waited a bit before deciding to go to the ER, but I was being woken up by residual pain. I had taken a gas x pill because right after that, I had this feeling like I needed to burp... They did a CT, no leak or obstruction. They diagnosed me with gastritis and moved on 🤷🏻‍♀️. I was in decent pain for quite a few days after, even on omeprazole. Since then the pain and tightness has not gone away. I feel like I cannot lay on my back with my legs out. It feels like I’ll rip inside. the most curious thing is there is a BALL of something in my stomach area now. A GI nurse said she thinks it’s scar tissue. Said I didn’t need to see a doctor. Nothing came up on an endoscopy. I’m writing because I’m once again having very loose stools, and gassy (burpy feeling included, but I can’t burp???), and quite a bit of pain there. I’m wondering if anyone has had something like this and if it was something that could be fixed? I’m going insane. Thanks all. ETA: with the burping feeling comes a lot of nausea as well.
  25. Hi. I have Hashimotos. Had RNY done 10/28/20. Lost 48lbs so far.
