    Holiday Challenge!

198.8 today. Doing a 5 mile walk/run on Thanksgiving day really helped stave off the weight gain! Didn't over-eat, but I did indulge a bit.

How To Tell What Size Body Frame You Are

The size that you were at a healthy / normal weight when you were 18ish is your body's natural inclination. The size of your bones do not change past that point (well until you get old!), especially for girls because we've quit growing by then. Females' growth plates have closed by 18, so whatever your bone structure was at that time in your life is what your frame size truly is. With weight gain, childbearing, health problems etc., it may seem as though our bone structure changes, but it does not and can not. The extra weight gives us bigger shoe, clothes, and ring sizes and makes it seem as though our bones have somehow grown in mass, but it just doesn't work that way. It's fat and nothing more. Btw, if anyone wants to see how much fat and tissue is really masking your bone structure, stick your hand (palm side down) underneath one of those high velocity bathroom hand dryers. It is crazy!
  4. MisForMimi I respectfully disagree with your conclusions regarding Scstxrn's comments. I interpreted Scstxrm's generalization regarding children of WLS moms to providing an environment of healthy eating which would benefit their children, I see no reference where RNY contributed to weight gain in children. Perhaps it would have been better to state that " increased ability to eat healthy food ".....applied to Both RNY and VGS which certainly would have a positive effect on preventing childhood obesity.
  5. Hello! My name is Debbie and im 51 years old. I have always had a weight problem. In December 2013, I had enough when I couldnt fit thru the gate at ball game. It was so embarrasing, I had to be escorted to another entrance. I cryed. I decide this was never going to happen again. I made an appt with the surgeon. January 2014 I saw Dr. Ali in Erie Pa . Hes absolutely wonderful, so compassionate. After 6 months of diet docs and many appts, with weight gains and losses and excitment and disappointment , I finally arrived at my surgery date. On September 17, 2014 I had sleeve surgery. This is by far the best thing I have ever done for me. Yes! I said for me. I have 4 grown children which I might add,,,only 2 really supported me. The other 2 where very skeptical. You see I also have 6 wonderful grandchildren whom I wanted to see grow up, have their own children and enjoy life. When I embarked on this journey I had diabetes, high blood pressure, depression and thyroid dosease and sleep apnea, high chlosterol and I have already at 51 had a heart stent. I was scared. When this journey to a new me I weighed 205 pounds , at surgery time I weighed 191, Today I weigh 156 and it just keeps comimg off. I went from a 3x size clothes to now a 16. I have never worn real jeans, the ones that zip. I now can. I feel strong and well. Since surgery the diabetes, is gone ,high blood pressure is gone, thyroid diesease (mimimal meds), the sleep apnea is much better, the chlosterol is normal and the cardiologist says he doesnt need to see me unless I have an issue. I can walk up stairs now. I have energy enough now to sometimes tire out my babies. I have had no issues. I think it is because I have been exacting about all the diet phases and really take my time and really heard what my body now says to me. I have only had pain, one time, when I ate way to fast and WOW! did that ever hurt. It felt like the worst huge bubble. Believe me lesson learned. I would reccommend this surgery, but I seriously feel that this choice has to purely be for the patient. Like dont do it for someone else. There are definetly, life changing, life style habits that must be followed thru. Thank You Jesus! for my success. God Bless to all, and good luck to anyone whos future is WLS.

    Your Thanksgiving Dinner Game Plan

Having thanksgiving dinner on Saturday. I'm not really planning on changing any food, but just having a bite or two of each, or until my sleeve says I'm done. Holiday weight gain doesn't happen over 2 meals...it happens over the 2 meals, left overs, parties, not exercising as much over vacation time, etc. Enjoy your one thanksgiving meal of the year, screw sugar free cranberry sauce :-P. Moderation is key, may as well learn it now.
  7. @@dgross congratulations on your upcoming surgery! so many women here saying that pregnancy ruined their bodies, or at least started them down the slippery slope of weight gain.
  8. Just wanted to give an update, I went to my doctor to discuss WLS. He was very open to it, especially with all of my health problems. He ordered a group of tests to check on my endocrine/adrenal function because he was concerned about how much weight I had gained in a small amount of time. He has discovered that I have Cushing's Syndrome and currently have a tumor on one of my adrenal glands. Cushing's Syndrome causes rapid weight gain and will not allow you to lose it. It also causes many other symptoms that I have had over the past year and a half. At this point, WLS will not happen especially since Cushing's Syndrome has a decently high reoccurrence rate and then I would have gone through surgery for nothing. Just wanted to say thanks for all the great advice!
  9. @@Keeper I remember the pamphlet from Lean Line when I was in the 7th grade. It read that first place a diet starts is in your head. For me, overcoming the bulimia was really very difficult. What truly helped my BED was the generic version of wellbutrin. i did some research on it and asked my doctor to prescribe that for me rather than the Prozac that I was on, which caused weight gain and did not reduce BED or bulimia. I do recall having the urge to eat and vomit after my gastric bypass, and contacting my bariatric surgeon and getting a reply back from his office, "I eat 6 grapes at night." My reaction was WTF!!!! I am talking about eating pizza and making myself vomit and you think the solution is simply to eat 6 grapes?!?!?! This is why we have to be our own best advocates when it comes to our health.
  10. @@IcanMakeit @amponder @pink dahlia we have similar stories. I was not quite as active as you in high school. but I absolutely swam and worked out. Then I got into a car accident and could not exercise. And I got depressed so I ate too many carbs. I gained 30 pounds by my wedding. Then came pregnancy and another 60 pound weight gain. And I gained more and more from awful eating habits. It was like being in quicksand and sinking more and more. I was over my head and opted for gastric bypass as a last resort. It saved my life.
  11. @@Keeper I always knew that I was a carb addict. But it was not until I did the Whole 30 program this Spring that I realized I am a sugar addict. And as you probably know, carbs turn to sugar in the body, so by strictly managing my sugar intake I was able to control -- control by a lot -- my hunger, and therefore achieve weight loss. I follow a Paleo diet now and have learned to listen to my bidy and understand hunger queses. What I have learned is that even something as begnine and good for you as roasted coconut juice will trigger the sugar craving / hunger game. Nor can I eat gluten free foods. Even one wrap a day over the course of only a few days shows up as a several pound weight gain for me. So the solution for me was to follow Paleo. It really is nice not to be hungry constantly!
  12. @@lisacaron research shows that many processed foods are engineered to make us crave more. that food scientists actually sat in a lab to figure out the precise levels of salt and fats and sugars to make our bodies addicted to processed foods and eat more. Processed Foods and Obesity - My Bariatric Life In fact, here is a 10-part series on weight gain and food addiction The Great Weight Gain Addiction Game, Part 1 then of course there are fast foods! Fast Food and Obesity: The Super-Sizing of America research also shows that aspartame and other chemical low calorie sweeteners cause our bodies to eat more (and thus gain weight, the exact opposite of what we believe "sugar free" means). Aspartame: Sweet or Misery add to that our extremely sedentary and stressful lifestyles. most people sit behind a computer screen at a desk for their jobs. then they come home and play on their computers, or gaming consoles, or watch TV. Internet Use, Obesity, and Poor Health - America's New "Sitting Disease" - My Bariatric Life Stress Linked to Obesity You mention the gut. The Influence of Gut Bacteria on Weight Gain and Obesity Intestinal Bacteria May be Causing Your Weight Gain There is a diet called the GAPS diet which is said to heal the gut. 13. For me, it was starting on birth control pills. They kicked off an uncontrollable weight gain. Decades later, I found out that what they actually kicked off was a hormone disorder called PCOS. Years of getting diets from doctors only to gain more weight on them. Once I was diagnosed, I was able to lose some pounds, but by then the damage had been done. Morbid obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, High Blood Pressure and arthritis.
  14. My weight gain started with pregnancy. 60 lbs gained with my first child. I lost 40lbs but with each child I pilled 20 pounds. Then, with 3 kids I just didn't take care of myself, I was too busy caring for my family and I didn't matter. I used food as a source of pleasure. It's what relaxed me. But I must say, I was hungry all the time. Even after a Thanksgiving meal I was hungry. I am so glad I don't feel that hunger anymore. It was horrible and there was nothing I could do to control it.
  15. I appreciate, but am also frustrated with this thread. We all have stories and whether some agree or not, our stories ARE connected to whether or not we ate more calories than we burned off. I gained 40 pounds with one pregnancy and didn't lose it, and nothing (seriously, no weight gain) with my second and then lost 40 right after. I was abused growing up, so I hid in a fat body. I got married and got comfortable. I went to culinary school, surrounded by good and rich foods all day. In my younger years because I was on my feet and working my butt off in restaurants, I was able to maintain my weight eating anything that I wanted. But I was never skinny or thin. As for genetics, one side of the family is all beanpoles and on the other short stubby round folk. I feel like I can relate to a piece of almost everyone here's story. Yes, we put too much food in our bodies. Maybe we did not exercise enough. Yes, we ARE responsible for those actions and more, but that by no means eliminates the "other" reasons we gained weight. I am a food and carb addict. I am at my heaviest weight ever. But I want to change, so here I am on a crazy WLS journey. I will change the way I eat and move but I CANNOT win this battle without facing the psychological reasons for the way I am. Just my 2 cents.
  16. I will say this, having read through the replies on this post. There were many women here that replied they gained weight after or as a result of pregnancy. I have said this for a LONG time, though Dr.'s really fail to listen to me and I'm sorry but I know MY body better then any of them ever could. I live in here...I know what goes in and what comes out and what happens on a 24/7 365 day basis no one knows it as much as I do. I was thin, and I do mean thin through out my younger years and into my very first pregnancy. That child did not survive but I noticed that my "body" had changed. Not only in my "mood" with the hormones that were coursing through it but in the way my body responded to those hormones and the shifts that go on. Suddenly it felt like trying to stick a square peg in a round hole, it just didn't fit. Next pregnancy, I didn't gain an ounce in 7.5 months Dr.'s began to "worry" so I began to EAT. I had a skinny anorexic cousin and my grandmother used to tell her to eat Peanut Butter and macaroni and cheese to gain weight. So I did that till I was ready to puke and then would lay down so I couldn't and that food would stay in. In a month I gained about 30 pounds, and the poor Dr. thought I might be diabetic. I had to go through 4 sugar tests because I would not tell her what I was doing to keep gaining the weight. Fast forward to the end of that pregnancy and a weight gain of nearly 60 pounds, no diabetes I confessed to the Dr. and my son was born of average weight 7.5 pounds 3 days before his due date on Thanksgiving day! The lovely nurse in the hospital (horrible experience there! A Nun there came to room and told me I should have died when I had major complications after delivery! Yes that happened.) the nurse told me as I squeezed into a control panty my mother told me I should wear after the baby, that the weight would not go away so easily nor would my "cravings". I almost feel like it was some kind of curse because after that....I never ate the same way again. My body never reacted to food the same way, and suddenly I always craved bad food, and I was hungry all the time. Fast Forward two kids later, my body now went from not gaining weight to easily gaining weight. As if once the fat cells were turned on they took over like a virus!! Wouldn't it be wonderful if someone could figure out how to cure that virus or at least put it into remission?!

    How My Family Eats Dinner

One of the reasons why individuals gain weight back after they reach their bottom weight and enter the maintenance stage after surgery is because of grazing. Grazing promotes expanding your pouch and that then leads to weight gain. It is very easy to graze when you are watching television.

    Cold Feet For Surgery

Thank you samuelsmom for reaching out to me. I am glad you connected to what I said. Trust me, it takes a lot for me to open up on the internet. I always did feel I have this mysterious disease that no doctor can figure out and it is causing my weight gain. Like something from syfy, I swear. I know I have bad habits I need to break, and the fact that I sit all day in a cubicle is what has contributed the most to my weight gain. I started doing walks on my 15 min break just to avoid cankles from hell. (No kidding!) I am with you there, I really don't want to do it. Why? Well first I am scared of medical procedures. I work in the health insurance business for 14 yrs and have heard it all. So yes, I am little scared to step in a hospital and into the hands of the power that be. But also I am mad at myself that I had to resort to surgery just because I haven't had the will power to do it on my own. That alone makes me get mad at myself. Like I failed myself. I know time is getting closer, so I am on an emotional roller coaster ride right now. I know the surgery will make me feel much better about myself. My boyfriend keeps telling me that he knows me and I am not going to fail after this surgery. He feels because I have invested so much already and after i cut up my organs, he feels I would do everything my power not to screw it up. I guess he trust me more than I trust myself. I have to learn and find the will power and overall it is work in progress. Thank you for understanding.

    Saturday's Positive Post

I had become very lethargic because of my arthritis and pain in my knees; which added to my weight gain. When I saw the orthopedic doctor, he said I HAD to lose weight in order to get my knees done and get some pain relief... I had thought about WLS before, but now I was even more propelled to look into it... I wish I had done this sooner. I have gone back to the orthopedic, who was VERY pleased with my weight loss and we are planning my surgery for the beginning of '15!!! Once that is done, I am hoping to be even more active and looking forward to pain relief in my left leg (first one to be done)... I couldn't have gotten here without WLS... the past year I have been maintaining with a 5 pound variable... tho I'd like to lose more, right now I'm just not active enough...BUT I have MAINTAINED for a year, which has NEVER happened with all my "diets" before this tool was "installed" LOL
  20. I think the patient can overeat excess calories and begin to regain weight and I also think the WLS can have issues and I also think the combination of patient and WLS surgery can also cause weight gain back. To gain weight, we must eat more calories than we can burn off. This is how I got super morbid obese. I wish the newer patients would not put so much (the WLS MUST work) while I dont change a thing attitude. Some are finding that WLS is not easy and its not a miracle. It will help the person but the person must also make changes. I know that as I am talking about myself.

    Losing focus

I agree with therapy. It has also happened to me and it resorted to a huge weight gain, this was prior to WLS. I had lost in on my own but gained it all back. I understand that you say you have no time, but if you do not have time for yourself … who else will? You have to always take care of #1 because that is how you are able to be there for others in the long run. Remember you did this for you, take the appropriate steps to take care of yourself precious one. You do not realize how much self damage you inflict when you are in pain.

    Buddy

Hey, I too am looking for a buddy. I was banded in 2005. I had been diagnosed with Addison's disease and was put on two different steroids and have gained weight back. People keep telling me that it was not my fault that I was gaining weight because it was the steroids. I started to become upset because of the weight gain and then started to make horrible food choices and stopped exercising. I told myself that it was because I am sick. I have gained around 50 pounds in the last three years. I have decided I need to go back to the basics with my lap band. My habits are up and down and so is my weight. I still have restriction so I know it works I too am very discouraged and determined to get back on track. I use my fitness pal to log all foods, Water and exercise. My name on my fitness pal is DaisyRN look me up and friend me, it is an awesome site. Good luck and message me whenever you need support. Good Luck!!!
  23. thats good to hear. I knew about the surgery weight gain. I actually gained 14 lbs during surgery. 1 week out and I lost that 14 plus 6 but haven't lost anything since. I guess that is normal from what I am hearing today.

    Not telling family

Besides my husband and my kids. I have decided not to tell anyone in my family. I have been really upset that they have badgered me about my weight gain and have made it very difficult for my to even want to be around them. What I find so insulting is that they are all extremely overweight but because my parents were both thin they assumed I should be as well. I hate also when people say that getting wls is the "easy" way out. How is it easy? I have give up almost everything and learn to re-eat and get treatment for learning how to stop overeating and go through the pain and struggle of doing without any support. If that is easy, what is hard?
