Tired - new symptom developed in past two weeks
MzB replied to HopeandAgony's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would up the Protein and see if that helps any. Your body may just need more protein now that you are upping the exercise. Other than that I would just watch it carefully and if you still feel concerned talk to your PA or surgeon's office. -
Diet Changes After Nutritionist
Creekimp13 replied to Jerseygirl4523's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was very lucky to have a nutritionist who was used to serving a diverse populations of people with very different nutritional preferences and cultural diets. (Kosher, Halal, Vegan, Vegetarian, Etc.) She asked me what my favorite diet was....I said Mayo Clinic/Mediterranean....and we looked at some key factors of the diet and made a few adjustments to prepare for bariatric surgery, but mostly I was able to stick to my preferred plan....and even praised for it. (I do hit a higher protein goal than I was used to, but I do half of it in plant protein) I also reduced my carb side dishes to 1/4 cup instead of 1/2 cup. If it's a Vegan main dish, that's different....but a side of rice or potatoes with a protien is a much smaller portion now....and often omitted. I'm discouraged when I hear about dietitians who only offer one approach and doctors who believe Keto is the only way to go. It works very well...but it doesn't work for everyone. I think patients are more compliant with plans they are comfortable with, and can maintain for a lifetime. Glad to be working with a group that offers more than one way up that mountain! Jersey, I'm a big fan of apples with natural peanut butter, too Had some for a snack tonight. LOL...I understand chicken fatigue! Maybe try to switch things up with fish or turkey? Congrats on your 14 pound loss! -
Why Did You Choose The Sleeve Over The Others?
4ALongerLife replied to Amie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well I DID regret it for a minute. I told my husband, at my worst, please take me home and leave me in a field to die. Ok that's a bit meladramatic right? I was really at my wits end (durn hospital wanted to put me in a nursing home for a half a second grrrr). But yes Artsy, I had a second surgery on 3/20 to restitch my pouch as a staple came loose due to my stomach skin not liking the staple in that place (essentially). (side note, where you been artsy???) I'm watching my progression back through the foods - I'm on a soft diet right now. Last week I did pureed and I was having some feelings that weren't good in my tummy whenever I would eat. Best description that I can give you is that it felt like my tummy was a wash rag being rung out whenever I would eat. The good news? I don't feel that way this week. Mind you, I've been eating a lot of cioppino Soup from whole foods (it's supposed to be fullll of Protein and lowfat as it's tomato based, also is very tasty/full of flavor) and alot of other soft foods still ... but I had chicken breast (about 3 oz) at lunch for my second time in the last few days and no issues. So whomever prayed and got it to God, thank you. My tummy's making some weird sounds and it worries me, but I've decided I'm just going to use my energy to remain positive instead of worrying. Sorry that was longer than intended btw, brittcherry, you are doing wonderfully! congrats, you loser! -

Thanks Denise! How does the wheybolic protein taste? -
Hey everyone! So I'm still on my 90 day weight loss management, and my provider has me on a low calorie high Protein diet which I'm sure we all are on. So this is my 3rd week of the diet, I've been really strict with myself and taking it completely seriously. I haven't had fast food or any dessert food in this 3 week period. The only problem I am having is that I haven't really lost weight! I have maybe lost 2-3lbs but it is constantly going up and down. TMI ALERT: Constipation is also being an issue which also effects the number on the scale. So my question is, has anybody else gone through this issue? If so what were some things you did to help. With the way I am eating and basically living off protein supplements and chicken, I thought I would have lost at least 5lbs by now. I have increased my Fiber as well as taking Probiotics but it's not working. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I'm on the 15th... Thinking-I'm on day 4 of my liquid diet and just realized I was supposed to be drinking Low Sugar stuff too.. Not that i was adding sugars, just drinking juice with my Protein drinks... .OOPPSS I've already messed up... Maybe not too bad... I'll get it right starting tomorrow. I hope that it doesn't matter that much. I have been eating 750-100 cal, low fat, not too high carb. DOING- working my hiney off getting everything at work and with the kids lined up for next week when I'm out of town. Also packing my bags, getting all my stuff that I need together for when I get back home, Reading, reading, reading... about what to eat when I get home, what to do when I get home, etc... And I'm exhausted from all the running around. feeling- nervous- Nervous that I wont lose weight after going thru all of this more than anything. I don't lose weight well at all. I can follow a healthy diet and exercise and only lose minimal weight. I just don't want this to be another failure. I know everyone has told me that I WILL lose, but I still worry about it. A little sad that my relationship with my "friend food" is changing.. forever. BUT Excited- about what the future brings-- I am focusing on the WHY I am doing this... For my kids, for my health. AND, excited that I am going to be able to cross my legs again, that my knees will feel better, that I will be able to buy clothes in a regular store, that I will feel better, that I will be healthier... HOW BOUT YOU???

Hey y'all! I just got sleeved yesterday morning and was released from the hospital today. My instructions from my DR., were to only have liquids for the next three weeks. I was told I could have broth, Protein drinks, or sugar free popsicles. Why type of Protein Drinks do you all recommend for these initial weeks after surgery? I drank a lot of Premier Protein for my pre-op diet and don't know if those would help for this first stage Thank you!! Happy holidays Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

I was going to say the same thing about needing Protein to make sure you get enough since the capacity is so small. I'm in Redwood City! We should have an SF area get together some time! Maybe to taste all the many samples of Protein drinks I have acquired... I may be sleeved as soon as two weeks from now.

Am I eating Enough?
irkenpanda replied to irkenpanda's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the encouragement and reassurance Lara Saved, I mix two scoops of the vanilla Isopure with about 8-10 oz of Soy milk. I can't stand the taste some days so i also add a little sugar free Torani syrup to flavor it. I believe the Isopure is 50gm for two scoops and the Protein in my soy milk (8th Continent) is 6-8 grams depending on how much I use. It takes me about one and a half to two hours to drink it. My heartburn is wicked evil if I don't take my pill about 10 minutes before I eat or drink. I have also noticed that some Crystal light will make my heartburn act up too which it wasn't a problem before. I am on famotidine and everyone here says to get on a PPI but when I asked my doctor, he just said to stay on the famotidine and see how that goes. I wonder why - maybe it has something to do with PPI's absorbing your Calcium? I dunno.............................. if anyone does, feel free to comment. -
Am I eating Enough?
Rev Me Up! replied to irkenpanda's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Your eating volume sounds about right - I am 1 month out and I can eat 2 oz of food consistently. It may be more than 4 bites because I am taking really small bites and it takes about 20 minutes for me to eat that little bit of food. Everybody says we'll be able to eat more in a few months :-) I eat about 6 times a day to average about 700 calories. I can't stomach the Protein drinks, so I eat protein dense food several times a day. Hang in there-- Lara -
Hi All, I had a gastric band for 8 years and I had to have it removed in September due to a port infection. I am hoping to have a gastric sleeve done, but it could be a while before I am accepted into the program due to long wait times. Since my band removal, I have followed a healthy diet (better than I didn't while having the band as I can now eat proper protein and vegetables!). But my body has metabolically repented and have gained 50lbs in 2.5months despite my best efforts. For those who were waiting for their sleeve..... what did you do before your surgery to keep your weight in check? Is there any special diet you followed or found useful? Weight watchers, low carb, keto, etc? I could really use some help.

This same exact situation happened to my sister in law... She changed over to my dr, which was also a different psych dr and she flew through everything fine! Maybe a option for you too . Good luck with whatever you choose to do! -
2 wks Post-Hard to eat! Feeling weak & shaky
LSF replied to LeeRN's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The more protein shakes you start drinking, the better you will start feeling. My surgeon only had me do clear liquids for 2 days, once I started drinking my protein shakes, I felt like a wilted flower coming back to life -

Thank you Brittany. They tell me I need 60 grams of Protein a day so that's why I force myself to drink that shakes. Denise -

Is there anyway to not tell your roommate?
Coco's Mum replied to anewchapter's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sure, I think it's possible ... unless you have not a good recovery. But, on the whole, you'll be eating smaller meals (which people do), exercising more (which people do) ... even protein shakes (people drink those all of the time as well). -
Is there anyway to not tell your roommate?
nurse535 replied to anewchapter's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't see any reason to tell her. I'd recommend saying it's a hernia repair rather than gallbladder removal, however, because if you do end up having to have your gallbladder out she'll know something's up LOL. There's probably not any way around telling her you are having surgery, but if you don't feel comfortable telling her why, then don't. If she questions your smaller meals or protein shakes, just say the surgery has made you want to work on improving your health, which is totally true -
Hey everyone... Okay so I'm getting nervous now... My surgery is 10 days away and I start my Pre op diet in 2 days... Can all the veterans or people on their Pre Op diet give me some tips, and also brands or ideas of protein shakes or broths they made. Thanks I appreciate it

Almost one week out and hungry!
ccaramel27 replied to ccaramel27's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I saw my nutritionist for a follow up today and she told me to take in more protein shakes. So from now on I will try 3 8 oz shakes a day to see if I can get rid of the hunger pains. She said I wasn't taking in enough protein! Thanks again everyone!! -
Before my surgery I ate low carb..high protein and sugar free foods. I lost 90 on my own in about 8 months. You just have to read your labels and portion control.

Am I ever going to eat again?
CA712 replied to wonderwoman75's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 weeks post op met with my nutrionist today for the 1st time since my surgery and she is starting me on soft foods next week. I have to say that I am so sick and tired of protein shakes and just started yogurt this week. Does anyone else feel the same as I do? There are those who think I have taken the easy way out to lose weight but we all know that is just not the case. I am thankful for the protein shakes, they do take away any hunger but still I am at my witts end. -
I am having such a good day today. After 4 months of slow losing (I think because I was having a hard time getting in all my protein), I have made great headway in the weight loss category. I'm down 69 pounds and I have on a top today that I haven't worn in 5 years. I saved it from 2 garage sales because I loved it and hoped to fit into it again one day. Well today is that day. I lost 6 pounds this week and last week I lost 4-1/2. I had a goal of 70 pounds by the end of June when we are having a family reunion. I guess I am going to meet and surpass that goal. I'm just so dang happy today. I hope you are having a good day too. Lisa

Well, I had a different surgery than you so my experience so far may be very different then what yours will be. For me, I've had a lot of stalls along the way though my first one was when I was 3 months out (it lasted 23 days) and I've currently been in one for two weeks now though that may very well have to do with muscle gain as I've been at my sisters house and am taking care of her 1 year old who likes to be carried and I'm walking constantly up and down her stairs... I was told the Loop DS (the surgery I had) doesn't have dumping syndrome, but discovered that is a MYTH because wheat give me dumping syndrome so I avoid it like the plague! Constipation issues can and probably will happen with EVERY surgery though in my case it's when I have too much iron in my diet. I just had my 9 month check up and was told to cut back my iron even more even though I've been alternating it from 1 iron multi one day to 2 iron multi's the next. I was told to stick to just 1 because my iron was very close to being too high as it was on the upper scale of normal and like two points away from being way too high. I had a potassium deficiency in my 3 month check up but it was normal in my 6 month check up but now it's back to being too low. My Vitamin A was deficient in my 6 month check up, but is normal again as of my 9 month check up. My calcium has been a little high at every check up and they advised me to lower it again even though I was only taking two calciums a day they told me to try taking 1.5 a day. I'm currently 33 years old. My high weight was 389 pounds. I was 321 pounds on the day of my surgery and right now I'm 219 pounds and am 4 days away from my 9 month surgiversary. The farther along I get doesn't really make it any easier. I find I still have to actively work to stay on track because I'm the only one in my family eating healthy while everyone around me is eating the foods that I used to love. I find I have to pep talk myself into eating right and so far I've been good. The worst I've done is eat a snack size Kit Kat or the two times I ate a cookie. I refuse to get down on myself for that though as it's something I've only done a few times and I make sure it still fits into my carb intake and allotted sugar intake so it doesn't feel like I'm cheating as it fits into my diet plan. Even my surgeons office said it was okay to treat myself as long as I fit it in to my diet plan and didn't overindulge. I find that it's helped me not go crazy by allowing myself a little treat on rare occasions. The protein intake for my particular surgery for women is advised to get between 80-100g a day. I try and get the minimum of 80 but since I drink 1 30g protein shake a day I'm only responsible for getting a minimum of 50g on my own. I tend to average (with the protein drink) around 90-95 a day. A weight loss journey is not easy. I don't think it's meant to be, to be honest. I've used this time so far to try and get myself used to better eating habits so that I can keep them up even when I reach my goal weight. I NEVER want to get back to being as heavy as I was. I used to be a 32 in pants and a 34-36 in tops. I'm now a 16 in pants and an xl in tops. I can just buy things without trying them on and they actually look GOOD, which is shocking to me! I like that I no longer have to shop online because stores don't carry my size. I like that I'm no longer plus sized now and can shop in the regular womens section of the store. I like that when I have to visit the doctor the cuff can now fit on my upper arm where before they had to put it on my wrist because it wouldn't fit on my upper arm. I like that when I have to wear a hospital gown for a test or a visit to the ER I can now fit in the regular sized ones and don't have to embarrass myself by asking them for the plus sized ones. So yeah, the journey isn't easy, but it's 100% WORTH it! You will have ups and downs, but sometimes you have to celebrate the non-scale victories to uplift yourself when you're in a stall or frustrated about something. I like that when I go see a specialist or go the ER they don't bring up my weight at all, where before that was ALL they seemed to do. I love that I'm only 39 pounds from my goal weight when I had been over 300 pounds for 15 YEARS!

I've been super busy the past 3 weeks and have slipped into some "grab & go" habits that aren't serving me very well. No loss for 2 weeks and today got on the scale and was up almost 2 pounds. I'm close to goal but it's been very elusive because I've gotten lazy about my choices. Anyone have some good standby meals that are quick and easy when you're on the go? One of my problems has been not making time for meals so I've noticed I grab a little of this and a little of that......which really translates to grazing all afternoon. Old habits die hard............ What are some favorites for healthy, high protein, low carb, bariatric friendly choices? Think it's time to clean out my kitchen and start over. Easy to get a little cocky since I've gotten closer to my goal weight.......which is exactly what I don't want to do!! Thanks for any input!!

I still have a Protein drink for breakfast because I don't really like any breakfast foods. lunch, leftovers, or egg or tuna or chicken salad, or sometimes a green salad with some chicken mixed in, sometimes deli meat and cheese rolled up. dinner, any kind of meat and some veggies. Sometimes I take my kids out for pizza and I can eat one piece. I still don't eat noodles , rice, potatoes, etc. I eat a lot of Greek yogurt because I love it!
