  1. My new life date. I have leads had a problem with weight. I was still very active, until 1993. I was in a plane crash and really messed up my foot. I know some are wondering how can a messed up foot case weight gain. It's simple you get to the point where you don't eat because it hurts to stand up and cook. So basically my body went into starvation mode and it holds on to everything I eat. In 2004 I had the lab band surgery and where a lot of people were saying their band didn't work mine did great. I lost 170lbs was healthy and again very active. In 2008 my world turned upside down when I went in to have my band fix do to a slippage. The bad had to be removed due to it being slipped to long and of course the weight came back on with a vengeance. Here I am the day before my sleeve surgery and excited as well as nervous that the same thing will happen again. I'm glad I found this app and I hope to receive a lot of support as well as being a great supporter for others. Thanks for reading my journey.

    My Consultation

Thanks @@scrapbasket, I will definitely get a folder started today, I have a couple documents from my PCP. I really do hope they count the time I've put into this. That would be fantastic! I'll add to my notes to talk to the coordinator at the surgeons office. I talked to my PCP about getting my records from previous visits to her. I don't think she wants to do all that. She gave me "you don't really need to do all that. That's why I put this and this in the letter". To me the letter seemed vary vague. But I guess, that's another thing to bring up with the coordinator. I don't think I have any qualifying co-morbidities. I'm borderline diabetic. I have crazy heartburn, but not sure If it qualifies as GERD and I noticed on a few post, gerd isn't really being considered a comorbidity as much. I'll find out if I have sleep apnea. My husband says I snore really loud and make crazy noises. I didn't used to snore before all this weight gain. so, well see. I'm seeing I need to be a bit more organized. Thanks again!

    Eating vs. Nibbling

I eat three meals and two snacks (if I remember). I tried nibbling but ended up eating way more than I should plus I was getting into the trail mix. This resulted in ..... A weight gain for me. So for me nibbling is out for sure - I can not be trusted apparently ☺️
  4. I had my sleeve August 18th 2014. I have not drank any alcohol since August the 9th over 4 months. I am wanting to drink but I am afraid for a few reasons. I am afraid I will gain weight, afraid I will get sick or dehydrated, but the weight gain is my biggest worry I have come to far to fail now. Any sleevers that drink ???

    Diabetes

I have Type 2 Diabetes and it was driven by my slow weight gain for years prior to surgery. I am 19 months post-op from RNY and my diabetes went into remission when I left the hospital and has never returned. But I do not know how gastric bypass surgery effects individuals with Type 1 Diabetes. So perhaps someone with Type 1 might chime in and tell their experience. A few individuals develop Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, right after surgery. What is interesting is that these individuals may or may not have diabetes prior to surgery. For someone who never battled with diabetes, this experience is a rather shock the first time. After the experience, they quickly become aware when another attack is coming and take something to correct the problem before it strikes again. And they seem happy with this approach. I have never experienced low blood sugar during my 19 months post-op.
  6. Ab stitching is what they do to correct any separation of the abs that may have happened, usually from pregnancy or weight gain. They literally sew your abs back up.

    Weight Gain! What the Heck!

@@Momma_D Don't panic. TOTALLY normal. Your body is adjusting, that's all. I gain weight all the time, but then I'll have a 4 pound weight loss. You are doing nothing wrong, (especially if you've switched over to good Protein instead of mashed potatoes and crackers)...follow plan, get some exercise, and it will come off. Stalls and weight gain are all part of the process, so you may as well get used to it now This journey is not a straight line, but more like steps of stairs. You'll have your ups and downs.
  8. Weight gain ! Really !! Made it under 300 to 299 two weeks ago and weighed yesterday up to 304.. i am not eating any different except I'm eating better!! I was living on mashed potatoes and crackers now I've switched to good protein.. this makes no sense!!! What the heck!!! I want to cry.

    Venting!

@@dohickey01 When you are in a place to begin a new, healthier, happier, safer lifestyle, I believe it is always best to be completely honest. Many of our lives have included traumatic events that, eventually, cause us to begin turning towards food for comfort/peace/friendship/an outlet, etc. If we don't include psych help to deal with our issues that may, in fact, have helped/caused our eating disorder we may never be successful in our weight loss journey. The surgery causes us to eat less for a period of time. It does not resolve our emotional eating issues. When you come out of surgery those issues will still be there and you will still want/try to eat because of them. In my opinion - THAT is even a worse situation causing even greater anguish and, yet another, emotional issue. I say that because you will not be able to eat much, but will still try because of your long standing habit. Also because - if you persist - you will eventually be able to eat more which will cause the weight regain. Perhaps you've heard of the percentage of people who were unsuccessful in spite of the surgery. That may be because they had not dealt with some emotional issues that had to do with eating. I realize many of us just want the surgery by any means necessary, but if we truly want to be healthy, happy and successful in our long-term weight loss, I think we must deal with the deep down issues that may have played a part in the weight gain. I hope this makes sense and helps in some way. Blessings to you in your life AND weight loss.

    Holiday Challenge!

cw 247.4 I just want to thank all the people that post weight gain. It shows that weigh gain or stalls do happen. I had no weight loss last week. Took a look at what i have be doing.... lack of exercise. Started walking and went to the gym. This week I'm down 5 pound. I'm now under 250. My doctors goal is 225, only 23 more pound. My goal is 190...would like to see my BMI under 30.
  11. It was really hard, but I did it. FYI, there were no video games in the 1960's and nowhere in my post did I mention cigarettes. What I was pointing out was that he was perfectly happy with a situation that most people would have been clawing their way out of. He had no desire to change or make things what most people would consider better for himself. He was just fine with the way things are. Maybe you are too. You don't have to have surgery if you don't want to .... just don't fool yourself about what your situation really is. Whether you think so or not, you aren't eating for optimal nutrition and weight loss. Do you know how much sugar is in sundried tomatoes? How much sodium? For you to get in the proper amount of Protein with all those ingredients, your salad would have had to have been MUCH larger than you stated, and the calories would have been pretty high. Skipping meals causes weight gain. For one, it slows down your metabolism. I could go on and on. You're just not eating the way you need to. If you want to have surgery, you are going to have to take a crash course in nutrition and really grasp what you are putting in your mouth.

12 pounds down in 8 DAYS!

The first few weeks when you melt like a snowman in July are so thrilling, lol. It's a great feeling. Your sleeve is still swollen, so you won't be eating a lot. I had mashed squash, mushroom gravy, avocado, hummus, tomato Soup, strained Soups, etc. Any fruits and veggies that go in the nutribullet are fine. Don't worry about weight gain, unless you plan on living on hot fudge sauce for the next month, lol. You won't be eating a lot, and everything is going to taste soooo good. I felt like the Queen of NJ after 4 oz of tomato soup. When you go on solids, you will start to know what "full" feels like. My friend bought me some 4 oz ramekins on Amazon.com to put my food in so I would always know what enough was. I still use them.
  13. you are me. I'm 9 weeks out. I had no other issues outside of PCOS (on the verge of diabetes). I have impeccable eating habits as well. Any more weight gain could have pushed me into a whole different territory. I wanted to be around for my kids like my eating habits show. Surgery has helped me lose almost 50 lbs in just 9 weeks. You have to be ready though and their is no shame in changing your mind. It's such a personal decision. I can say for me I thought I was happy and confident prior to surgery, but my actual weightloss has revealed something completely different. I'm truly finding myself now.
  14. Ive gained backed 7 lbs this fall as ive not been able to walk or run due to a heel injury. ( No walking allowed until January ) Id give anything to be able to run , so if your body is strong enough to exercise, try to take advantage of it ! Find something you like, or try something you've never tried before. How about cycling class, swimming, dance class , etc. As far as food, my weight gain is also because im eating too many sweets ! Sugar is my kryptonite ! I don't cook much differently than I did before, we just lean meals towards Diabetic cooking, its all good and lots of variety. Try googling for some meal ideas. Good luck !!

    Seriously Depressed

Way to go Kim! Now start getting in a multi Vitamin morning and night until you can check back with the WLS team maybe. B12 is almost always recommended too, and can give you energy. I found myself getting depressed after a long stall about 5 to 6 months out, and I contacted my doctor because I recognize the depression symptoms from some years back. I'm now on wellbutrin because it isn't known to have a weight gain affect, and seeing a counselor a couple times really helped. I am thrilled for you that you made the call – and that you got on this site to reach out for some help. Smart woman! You can do this, even though it's hard. You go girl! Kate
  16. Today I see the nutritionist. I'm nervous about it because when I last saw the surgeon, on 11/6, I was 10 lbs lighter than I am now. My insurance already approved me, and I'm scheduled for surgery on 12/29. This is my last Dr's appt before surgery, but I'm afraid the nutritionist will change all that because I've gained more weight. Of course it's my fault I've gained, because I'm eating everything I feel I can't have after surgery, but can it be delayed due to weight gain?! My Dr. doesn't require a 2 week pre-op diet, but I am putting myself on one starting Monday, exactly 2 weeks before my big day.
  17. Sorry I just need to rant.. My husband is probably SO sick of hearing me obsess over everything..Who is with me?! Surely I'm not the only one! Oh man! 2 more weeks until my last weigh in. phew. Now that's off my chest... Lets see............... >> Psych Eval done & passed >> Nutritionist visit(s) done >> sleep study (no sleep apnea!) >> 5 other monthly weigh ins & supervised diet completed >> food journaling done >> Met with surgeon Now, I go back and obsess over every single thing. What did I miss? I feel like something wasnt done! My weight jumped up and down (very few lbs in either direction). I again obsess over that! Hmm..Lets start a list of what I have obsessed over, and researched until I was blue in the face! >> Making sure every appointment was made and I actually went as scheduled. >> Insurance requirements... What does the internet say (other patients) vs my doctors office? >> Will I be denied due to weight gain (even though I've lost it...weight gain due to depo shot & other surgery preventing as much exercise)? >> Will the insurance go by other factors (as comorbidities besides the typical high blood pressure, diabeties, sleep apnea, etc)?? >> DR's office & website both say theres about 30 comorbidities that insurance will look at besides the above. If thats the case, I'm good on that aspect. I figure the DRs office knows what they are talking about...but still nerve racking. FYI: insurance website says up to 2 weeks for decision. DRs office says once approval is received then surgery will be 1 week after. Okay now that rant is done (for now- HA HA)............ What did you obsess over and over and over about?
  18. You haven't gained that much. Baby weight gain is a pretty normal thing...many women gain more like 30, not 10 so it seems you have done well. I guess like most of us you would need to take some sort of action to get back to the 145. I don't really know where you are post op, but in general, going back to basics like eating Protein first, not snacking, avoiding eating late, etc etc are the ways to knock off 10 pounds. I currently weigh 155, still under my goal, but i too want to get back to 145. I am holding steady right now, but come January I plan to tackle it by modifying my eating and exercise.
  19. I was 145 before having a baby i was a year postop im all over the place with weight might be my scale my baby is 3 months now and im at 153 to 155 i was 150 anf quit brest feeding and went back up to 153 im really upset about the weight gain does it take a bit to come off or will it just not come off:(
  20. Ok ladies and gemtlmen. I have a serious question. I am concerned because on 12-4 i weighed in at 288 this was my one month. That was 25lbs in 30 days. I am so excited. I am following the rules and having issues with nausea yet I'm still working through and staying positive. I checked my weight yesterday and it shows an 8lb gain? Could this be accurate? I'm puzzled. I'm interested to know if anyone else experienced such torture lol. In remaining positive and keep telling myself it's water.
  21. I take Lamictal, Seroquel and Gabapentin. Seroquel makes me hungry all the time, as a result weight gain. My question is, Am I still going to be hungry after I have the surgery if I continue taking the Seroquel? Anyone know?

Sick and tired of explaining myself...

I agree with ProjectMe. I was hesitant about going to the Thanksgiving get together because I didn't want anyone to mention my surgery or weight. So, I phoned my mother up a week before and declared that we weren't going if anyone at Thanksgiving dinner mentioned my weight or surgery. This was a big deal because we didn't go to Thanksgiving last year because I was too embarrassed about my weight gain. I only told my mother about my surgery 2 months ago, but she is one that likes to talk. I was pretty sure word had gotten around. Thanksgiving dinner with the relatives went great. All I got was wonderful compliments. I didn't hear any whispering behind my back either. Who knows what they said when I left the room. I just don't really care. I am happy with how well things are going and I'm really not interested in their opinion. Your relatives may be more inclined to give their opinion if you talk about surgery or weight loss issues with them frequently. That is what is so great about this forum. If I want to get advice or share something to do with surgery or weight loss, I can just go here. I've been around people that talk endlessly about their diet, exercise regimine, or the obesity epidemic. So annoying!

A new me in 15 hours!

@@Skywalker, some people just have a harder time waking from anesthesia, I don't know what causes it. As for the weight gain, my blood pressure got so low they had to double up on the IV bags to get more Fluid into me, thus the weight gain. The last two days have been hell for me. I slept an awful lot and have had quite a bit of pain in my guts. Just feeling very out of sorts. The good news is, I lost that pesky 9 pounds plus one so I am moving in the right direction! Looking forward to feeling a little better every day. Just keep walking and sipping....that is what I have been told to do. Wishing you all well!

    Protein !:-(

Jess are you sure about the Syntrax matrix I mean at your stage this could be totally way off base, congratulations by the way you have done wonderfully! As is said I do a lot of taste testing and the people that make the syntrax products , Si03 is the name of the company, they sent me tons of syntrax nectars to try I had asked for matrix but they said in an email " Syntrax Matrix Products are not Weight Loss supplements, they are Meal Replacements, and as such do not meet Bariatric guidelines for post surgical usage." Now you are well past normal post surgery so It probably doesn't apply to you. Blerdgirl- first, every surgeon is different evidently. I know in the hospital and for the first 2 days after surgery I am not to have anything besides Water or Clear liquids. No Protein or anything until day 3. My surgeon even went so far as to tell me the nurses in the hospital may offer me Protein drinks, but do not take them. Now again that's just me, but It seems that a lot of people on here do not take protein on the first few days. I know you asked about sugar and carbs the issue I have is if a mix has say 10 carbs per use that could put you at s high as 40 carbs for the day, which is a lot for a bariatric surgery patient. Sugar and carbs derail weight loss faster than a drive through window. Also sugars and carbs are a huge contributing factor to dumping as well. Basically I can tell you 3 things my team ( surgeon and nutritionist) are adamant about. 1. Always protein first then carbs or sugar if you absolutely have to. 2. Weight loss supplement protein mixes and drinks are different pro Meal Replacement shakes or powders. ( more on this, 90% of protein powders are marketed to weight GAIN, They are designed to add bulk to people doing bodybuilding and heavy heavy weight training. Which is something a bariatric patient most certainly does not want. Many protein powders etc will say on the back in small print..This is not a weight loss product". 3. stick to whey Isolate protein only, hemp, soy, and other Proteins are not readily absorbable in a sleeve patient, they take too long to be absorbed and by the time they would be they have already past the point of digestion, they can also make traveling through your intestines and lower GI tract , rougher than you would like. You may want to post a question to the forums in general, and ask " how much sugar and carbs should I have? I think you would get a lot of good answers. Just as a caveat, I take in less sugar and carbs in my pre op diet than whats in those shakes.
  25. Thanks everyone and @@Julie norton , my ass did go away, but the skin that covered it is still there in a big glob at the bottom of my former ass. My thigh skin is pooled at my knees and if it werent for my saggy boob skin that I have to pick up and stuff in my little B cup, I would probably be in a training bra????. Believe me, naked Kindle is not a pretty Kindle. I just wanted to add a bit of advice for the newbies. There are certain things that can be a normal parts of this process.... No appetite, struggling to get in fluids and Protein, getting sick from certain foods, hunger, diarrhea, constipation, reflux, pain, nausea, stalls, weight gains, hair loss, emotions, etc. Expect them all. If they don't happen you will be pleasantly surprised. If they do, roll with it, figure out a way to overcome it and know that it's normal. And remember there are dozens of ways to make the sleeve work for you. Take all of the advice you get from your bariatric team as well as on here and figure out what works for YOU. Take responsibility for forming a plan you can live with. Always remember the ultimate goal should be a healthier you, the weight loss is a bonus. OWN your journey...it's yours and yours alone.
