  1. You know I never really thought about it. But I am on ALOT of meds that can cause weight gain. Prozac Depo shot Steroids and steroid shots Tizanidine An OAB medication that causes Fluid retention sometimes. And I'm sure there's more. I take 15 prescriptions all together. What happens after my surgery? Should I switch medications? I definitely want to switch out Depo I started the shot in March and have gained 40lbs on top of my steroids. Thoughts? 2. Thanks. And it's not like i have to stay with this doctor. If he see's weight gain, it he is annoyed. I told him the lap-band is not the magic cure all to weight loss. Thanks again.

Come out of the band failure closet!

Patti, I don't think you're alone when it comes to losing weight and then it stopping and putting it back on. I've heard from several bansters who are in the same situation. I myself found that many factors kept me from losing after being banded and then I put back the 25. Talk to your surgeon about what's going on and see how much is in your band and if adding more should be an option for you or if you're too full. Either one can sabotage your efforts. Everyone is different but some people seem to do better with something more regimented like following Weight Watchers and they can tell you exactly how much food you can consume a day and still lose weight. We all put ourselves through hell by our weight gain and you know what we're better than that. March into that doctor's office and say I have a problem with some weight gain let's get this thing turned around. It's your life not his/hers! Do you think you need a punishment for gaining weight, well too late you're already punishing yourself! Do you think you're the first patient your doctor has seen put on weight, no. If things continue to get worse then say to your doctor what do we do next? Be proactive with your health and good luck, and don't hate yourself, you're not a failure by all means!!!:thumbup:brandyII.
  4. remember mushy foods go thru the band easier and therefore you can eat a lot more of them which can cause weight gain. This is good advice! I was almost tempted to throw the entire chicken dinner I cook for the family in the food processor but I realized I would be eating faster than everyone and it's the lazy way out. I have to learn to chew like a grown up!
  5. YAY! Well I am certainly always glad to kill two birds with one stone! I am 23 soon to be 24. I just got married 4 months ago. We have been together about 5 years. When we first started dating I was the "ideal" 155. I gradually and unwillingly gained slightly over 100. I suppose I was in denial for years of the gradual weight gain. However, It was always that elephant in the room! I saw my wedding photos and I was just astonished. It was almost like a slap in the face, I knew I just was so unhappy. I didn't get to have the wedding dress of my dreams because every bridal shop we went to only have sizes 4-10 to try on it felt like. I havn't told my husband yet what I am going to do. Not that I think he won't support me but more like I would love to not bring attention to something we have always know was there but yet opt not to talk about. Obesity runs in my family, my uncle and my mother definitely struggle. My Mom fortunitely had gastic bypass 6 years ago. I thank god every day I see her that she did. She is so happy and loves life and lives it to the fullest everyday! I have never seen her so happy. I wish she would have done it sooner. So I know I do not want to let it get that out of control I want to put an end to it now. As for not having a safety net. I suppose it will still be there however, you will probably learn really quick as to what it is willing to take and what it just won't. At first it's hard to get things "threw" In time in moderation I hear it's easier but simply only as a "treat" not a permanent fixation.

    Slow Losers and Real Restiction

Damn that Ninja Turtle theme song........I'm terrible about if someone mentions a song or sings one around me it gets all in my head for the rest of the day.........thanks alot kimaliciosu!!!!! Now here's one for you....PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON.....LIVED BY THE SEA......... I honestly can't say if my slow losing is because of adequate restriction - maybe I don't know what adequate restriction is??? I eat waaaaaaaaayyyyyyy less than pre-banding - which has me confused why I haven't lost more weight. I now eat 1/3 of what I did pre-band yet still only small weight loss. I think I've come to the conclusion that it isn't what I eat, but how I don't move much anymore. I need to get me a pedometer to motivate me just to move more. I look back and notice when I had a significant amount of weight gain was shortly after high school - that's because I was constantly on the move in high school and once I graduated I got a desk job - hellllloooooooooo fat assssss!!!!!! I'm only 6 years out of high school and weighed 230 and muscular/athletic in high school - before surgery I weighed 293 - so I gained 63lbs in six years........wow just had an epiphany here with you all.......damn I've gained 63lbs since high school only 6 short years ago and was gaining steadily and have no doubt I'd be in the 300lb club if it weren't for Bambi (my band). Somebody buy me a pedometer for Christmas!!!!!!! I can't find any around this area in stores. Waaaahhhh - actually I think I'm going to go ebay it.........do they make a pedometer in a wrist thing? I don't like wearing things on my waist. Mainly because when I sit my fat roll folds over my waist......gross....I'm so grossss..........LOL - BUT NOT FOREVER!!!!!

Restriction changes from meal to meal

I think many of us feel the same way! I think it is common for the band fills to kick in, even 1-2 weeks after the fill. Also, I think it is common that once you PB a few times, the stomach is swollen, thus tightening our band. Not to mention, hormones, time of day, etc. My motto with fills is...if more often than not you are too tight, then you may need a slight unfill. I HATE being too tight. Also, with the quick weight gain. Sometimes, if I am too tight (low calories) over time, then bamm I am loose and can eat more, my weight loss slows or I even gain a pound or two. I attribute this to my metabolism slowing, due to low calories/starvation mode. Then, once I can eat more my metabolism is still on "slow speed" and takes a while to speed up. Your body want to conserve the food (energy) it is receiving. Give it awhile, those pounds will come off. Shawn

    B12 advice

It seems it may be related to an excess of all vitamins not just B12 . A lot of foods are fortified with vitamins to supposedly improve people’s health. Everyone eats more, but generally eats poorly then they take vitamins to make them ‘healthier’. I’d question whether the weight gain is from too many vitamins or too much poor food or both. Apparently though, having a B12 deficiency may lead to weight gain. As I said in my earlier post, if your bloods show you are lacking in a specific vitamin or mineral, a supplement is a solution (as is modifying your diet to include good natural sources of the lacking vitamin/s). But if you have ample, you don’t need it. Two articles I found you may want to read: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/vitamin-b12-deficiency-and-weight-gain#deficiency https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3932423/
  9. Hi there, I'm Andrea and I had my lapband removed in September after complications with reflux and inability to keep anything down. I had it for just over 2 years and lost a total of 70 pounds. I'm extremely depressed. I have been gaining weight like crazy. I've gained 20 pounds. For the last 6 weeks Ive been doing weight watchers and still gaining weight. I'm eating healthier than ever. Did anyone else have such a huge weight gain? Any suggestions?
  10. Last May, a WL Dr put paperwork in to my ins co to get a pre-authorization to begin a12-month weight loss counseling program. I weighed 206. During the summer I had a terrible family event and put on 20 lbs. On May 2 my yr will be finished and the Dr will put thru the final paperwork and it's going to show that I gained. I'm worried I will be turned down so now I'm desparate to try an lose 15 lbs in 5 weeks. A little depressed because I don't know if I can do it...... His surgical muse has even penciled me in for June 26. I'm do close but feel so far.

    Diet soda ever again?

When in maintainance soda won't kill you, but diet soda is full of poison sweetners and actually has been shown to cause weight gain and appetite stimulation even though it is zero calories. Drink mostly water and if you must have some poison every now and then you will probably survive. I don't really care for how soda feels when I drink it, but I have had one every now and then.
  12. Hi I am new here I just wanted to know if anyone has left thier fluid in while they were pregnant and if so , how much weight was put on

    Mirena!

Ok so I see what your saying.....I need to look at the overall benefit that I gain from it and talk to my doctor to see if we feel as if is a hindrance to my weight loss. I know that when I went in to get my Mirena I was 202 with the lapband, and after 4months I ballooned to 230, and from that point on I could not get the weight off. That then lead me to struggles with my band and I ended considering RNY, and I was approved then shortly after went through the process. The only thing is that I never thought that the weight gain could have come from the Mirena until recently. So I'm gonna google this topic some more. Thanks soooo much for sharing. Oh and I loved the I'm not an expert! Lol SD: 10/10/12, Converted from Lapband to RNY, HW (before band) 263, HW (RNY) 230, Preop 219, after surgery 223, current 201
  14. I was not able to exercise until the 6th week, and then, only lightly. It was truly 3 months before I was 100% back to full gym training. Once I was lifting again, it only took a couple of weeks to get my full strength back. I recovered from my TT well, but when I had my thigh lift, I pushed it too hard post-op -- started walking about 5 days out (I felt fine, after all) and I developed complications (seromas that resolved but that were a pain in the tush for about 6 weeks). It's not worth it. Sit tight until your doctor tells you otherwise, even if you feel you could exercise. Your body burns so many calories post-op that, for me at least, I found weight gain wasn't a concern. And, like I said above, even with 3 months off weight training, I got it all back within a couple of weeks. Good luck! TT is wonderful. To this day I say losing 200 lbs over 18 months didn't make me a thin person -- having a 5 hour TT did.

    baby and port

I just thought that was cool. I had no idea that an individual could have a band like that. I think it should help with the weight gain during pregnancy. My daughter is considering it, but she is trying to work it out with diet and exercise right now. She just had a baby, but I think it scared her to get a lap band with the possibility of becoming pregnant again. That is why you peeked my interest.

October 17 VSG, need October friends!

I was sleeved Oct 17 in South San Francisco, CA. My journey has taken several years and I've had to switch surgeons. (The first required me to lose 85 lbs pre-op and even after I lost 50lbs he said to keep going, and stop eating fruit... needless to say I got a 2nd opinion) I was originally scheduled for June 20 but got sick, then I was put on steroids for my asthma, so my rescheduled date of July 22 was canceled also due to weight gain (due to the dang steroids!!!) So I'm now happily post op!

    Awesome I did it!

I did it!!! I reached my goal weight this morning!! I can't tell you how successful I feel!! About my journey; started in 2007 at 300 pounds and had lapband surgically placed on June 27. I actually gained 20 pounds during my pre-op phase(so embarrassed to say this). Lost down to 260 pounds and that's where it ended. Vomited a lot, couldn't eat many healthy foods resorted to eating slider foods. Fast forward to 2012; I lost my job, moved to a new city, life was on a downward spiral. Then something happened; I was somehow guided to this site! Life changing experience and how grateful I am. Within 6 weeks of finding this site I found a surgeon in Tijuana Mexico and had gastric sleeve surgery on September 10, 2012. The best thing I could have done at the time. Weight loss came off fairly quickly but I also learned very soon out that I could eat anything, fat, sugar, sliders and the like. I know surgery is a tool but at the time I didn't realize I needed a greater tool. I didn't initially go with the gastric bypass because I was afraid of the intestinal re-routing. So weight gain started; Christmas came and I thought I could handle eating a little of this and a little of that; I was wrong. So 2015 and I want to reach my goal weight; 160 pounds. I want to live the rest of my days at a normal healthy weight. Through Bariatric Pal I found my amazing surgeon, Dr Zavalza and had my gastric bypass on September 4, 2015 at 203.6 pounds(started pre-op at 212.7). Here I am at my goal weight, 160 pounds, down 52.7 this time around. I DID IT!! The gastric bypass for me if different from the sleeve. I have really good restriction, I really don't have cravings, I now have an aversion to sugar, I can't eat anything and I have no issues with the re-routing part my labs are good and I take all of my required Vitamins daily. Here are things that I do differently to make me a huge success this time around; I know that there are foods that are trigger foods for me that I should never eat again so I have found healthy substitutes for them that I enjoy. I don't eat bread, Pasta or rice(I gave up a long time ago) but again if I chose have found alternatives that I can have. I also enjoy fruits(limited), vegetables and healthy carbs(squashes, sweet potato) and of course Protein. I track all of my food intake and drink all of my Water. I also have found exercise that I enjoy doing and have made it a daily routine. I love myself and all of my size 6 clothing that I look fantastic in! Now on to maintenance; I will keep doing what I am doing and enjoy what life brings!!

    Dumping?

I was naughty and tested the waters and had a mouthful of a sweet desert and I felt so sick and sweaty. Never ever will I eat sweet items again, not worth the risk and the weight gain. You will know when your experiencing dumping. Just little amounts of new foods at a time. Good luck ???? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  19. Well, went for my wellness check up this past Wednesday and my family doctor brought up the dirty "S" word. Surgery. Not just surgery but weight loss surgery. I'm not even sure why, but the whole idea scares the crap out of me. I think if a surgeon said "knee replacement" or "midfoot fusion" or "hip replacement", I'd be nervous but not so scared if that makes sense. I've done nothing but obsess since Wednesday. Checked with my insurance and bariatric surgery is covered. I was kinda hoping it wouldn't because I wouldn't have to consider it which would decrease my anxiety and result in less emotional eating which will result in even more weight gain. Don't ya just love vicious cycles? I now have a bookmark folder just for bariatric surgery. That's serious for me. Hope I can get advice from all of you as I go through the decision-making process and then through the journey itself if I decide to make the journey. Thanks for listening.

    Weight?

@@loca_lette813 when I had my first appointment with Dr., I was 271. My insurance requires 90 days supervised weight loss. During my middle appointment I was up to 283. By my last appointment I was down to 276. They just submitted to my insurance (BCBS Federal) yesterday so I don't know yet if I'll be approved because of the weight gain. I'm really nervous, but Drs office thinks it should be okay... Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Was it something I said????

Hugs, Jamie. Lots and lots of hugs! It is a vicious cycle - you gain some weight, you feel guilty/stress about it, which causes you to eat more which increases the stress....Try not to put so much pressure on yourself; summon up whatever it takes to realize that the band will still be with you after you deliver a beautiful new baby, any weight gain now is not permanent. Your band is NOT time limited; it will still be there. Take care of yourself and the wee one. keep posting so that we know how you are doing.

    Was it something I said????

Give yourself a break girl! You are a hormonal mess and you are eating for 2. Think about it, you have been through ALOT this past year and I am willing to bet that part of you being hungry all of the time is your body's way of making up for the loss in Vitamins & such that your body has done without for the past year. I wouldn't sweat the weight gain unless you start gaining more than the 30-35 that is recommended for any pregnancy. Take care of that little one

What's so bad about being fat anyway?

Hi guys- Good thread for some who has not been banded yet (me ). I am at about 32 BMI give or take and have been for 10 years. Prior to this I was always around 25 BMI because I was a competitive athlete through my early 20s. The reasons I want to be banded are below. 1. I met and married a partially handicapped man and although he has little outward signs of his handicap (a small limp) so no one really knows how bad it is, it is pretty difficult to do any physical activities together. Even going to NYC for a date is out of the question because of the invariable amount of walking involved. We've been together for 10 years and I've packed on my extra 70#s in that time. I will be able to get 30-45 minutes of exercise 3X a week in on my own time but never more with my marital situation. The 2 hours away is already painful and I don't want to spend more time then that away from my husband. 2. My mother's and father's sides (a mix of course) have histories of MO. All the co-morbs that come with are happening to my mom right now. I am 34 and see nothing but additional weight gain as my life progresses because of this and #1. 3. I work in a very fashion conscious, appearance obsessed industry but are amazingly good at what I do so have been able to get away with not keeping up with my peers on that front. If I were to fit into traditional women's sizes (I'd be happy with a size 10/12) after a banding, I could spend time on my appearance and I would feel less awkward socially and clear up some of the depression I have experienced about my looks since gaining weight. To summarize, I want to be banded now to prevent the co-morbs which are on the way and to prevent even more weight gain as my metabolism slows even further into my forties and fifties (health) AND to feel better about myself on the inside (mental health) when my outside matches the vigor of youth I feel on the inside (external societal pressure). This is the truth. Does it make me a bad person? I don't know. What I do know is my weight consumes my thoughts all day long. The way those studies say people think about sex 15 times a day or something like that, I think about my fat body, lack of energy and pending health nightmares. If I can do something about that, I am going to. Thanks for hearing my thoughts. This board rocks.
