why does your hair fall out?
sclong replied to MaybeBanding26's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've read it from lack of protein. I'm not going to worry too much about it, at least I'll be skinny with thin hair! -
Hi there. Im from Australia and was banded back in November 2007. I've had moderate success, having lost 25kg (about 55lb) but still have a bit to go. Having browsed a few threads on here about people suffering from left shoulder pain, i'm feeling a little better! (I'm not alone!!!) Recently I have began having SEVERE pain on the top of my left shoulder, which sometimes gets so bad I feel like i'm going to collapse. I can't seem to pin point what causes it. My surgeon sent me for a Barium Swallow Xray (which was horrific), but can't seem to find anything. He thought it may have been my band pushing up on my diaphragm, but it doesn't seem to be. Just a warning to people who are looking in to getting it done - not everyone gets it, and I was only warned that it may happen in the first few weeks. 18 months later and its killing me! Its worth having the surgery for the weight loss, but sometimes I wonder about this pain! Good luck to anyone who is about to have the surgery! :blushing:

Hi, my name is Donna, I've been married for 23 years, I'm a mother of 4 boys, 21, 20, 17, 13. I never had to worry about my weight growing up, never had to diet. When I got married at 21 I only weighed 105lbs. Then they babies started coming, and the weight started going up. I never went over 200lbs with any of my pregancies. Then the next thing you know I was creeping up on the 200lb mark. When I went over 200lbs, I just gave up. I figured I'm not that bad looking, just will buy bigger sizes and look my best. Then it hit, knee problems (4 surgeries), sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and had a cardiac ablation last year. After cardiac ablation, my heart was doing much better. Was released from cardiologist. Until June 2009, was put back on meds for heart rate. He told me I had to lose the weight. He made appointment for me to see a weight loss surgeon and then it all started early June 2009. Went through all the pre-surgery classes, was approved by insurance (they paid) and had surgery on August 26, 2009. Was 228 and to date have lost 36lbs. 192lbs and counting down. I joined LBT for support. I have been going on LBT since surgery and have been informed on alot of different issues I've and and it's nice to know others have had the same problem and we can now Band together. Thanks for all the support. :cursing: Sorry so long, but wasn't really sure what to post. Will keep next posts short. :cursing: Hope to post soon.

Yes , it is hard watching my family eat what ever they want to , We traveld "moved " right after my surgery and the only place to eat was fast food . Just think of the weight loss , I was so happy when I weighted and lost a pound every two days , in the begining . I have slipped back in to my snacking and eat sugar agian . I'm so tired of thinking of what to eat . Making two different meals for dinner is getting old . I think maybe I will give my self a reward to get back on track . Hard to think of the reward ;]

Hi all, I need some motivation/suggestions. I was sleeved 4/1 and I've been pretty successful, in my opinion. I've lost a total of about 50 pounds. The problem I've been encountering is this: it's really painful for me to exercise. I have a pinched nerve in my hip. Anyone who has one, knows what kind of pain this is. it seriously feels like a knife is tearing through your hip every time you take a step. It's caused by all of this excess weight I'm currently carrying. Everyone I have seen have said that once the weight comes off, it should heal on its own. Walking for more than 15 minutes starts to irritate it and I'm left limping back home because I can't tolerate the pain. I tried pushing through the pain once and I walked for an hour. Needless to say, I was miserable for a week afterwards. Every step was excruciating. There are meds I can take (Celebrex) that helps with the inflammation however I'm weary of taking meds since my stomach is so small now and there's less acid to break down the capsule. My doctor said to take it in case of emergency. My question is: what kind of exercise can you suggest? I know this is a tough question to answer but I need help. If I'm home, I usually have some weights to work out my arms and occasionally, I swim since the Water keeps the pressure off of my hips. I can't swim everyday though. What do you think? Does anyone else have a similar problem? I want to speed up this weight loss as much as possible and I'm really REALLY concerned about excess skin. Thanks in advance

5 weeks out and can't get much down...
faithstar posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a little concerned as I seem to only be able to eat very small amounts and I'm having around 350 calories on week 5. My NUT gave me a general sheet of guidelines to follow with no mention of weighing anything or counting calories. She just mentions 3 small meals and what I can eat and a couple of snacks in between IF i want. She has written for me to have an omelette with 2 eggs and low fat cheese and I made an omelette with one egg and cheese and had a quarter. For dinner I have a couple of spoons, if that and I'm done. I wouldn't say I'm STUFFED but I'm full and can feel the food sitting in my throat and I don't want to push it. I'm worried my weight loss will slow down if I don't eat enough and on top of that I feel a bit depressed. How much should I be eating at this stage? -
I'm newly sleeved - just since June 4th. However, before my sleeve I couldn't get the weight off no matter what I did until my surgeon put me on a low carb diet. You may want to track your carbs and try to keep them under 30g total to see if that would jump start your loss.

Post Op Appt Today, Then Surgery On Feb 6Th!
dom1985 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello fellow sleevers, I am excited and nervous at the same time. I have my pre opt appt today with my surgeon and I'm not sure exactly what to expect. Honestly this whole process has been going by so quick that I can't even believe my surgery is less than 3 weeks away on february 6th. I have already started my short term disability process with my employer so i'm ready to go!! Naturally, i keep going back and forth with myself fearing that I am not making the right decision. Reading your posts about the progress some of you are making gives me hope, and lets me know that I am making the right decision for me as well as my family. Like l've said in previous posts, I have 2 children, a 5 year old little girl (who will be turning 6 feb 3rd) and a 18 month old little boy. I want to be able to live a much healthier life for them. As far as the insurance approval goes, my surgeons office hasn't really mentioned anything about it. I asked one question about it during my first visit (back in November) and he said a lady from his office would take care of that. I called on my own and talked to a customer service rep( I have United Healthcare Choice Plus) who stated that my policy did cover the sleeve with a bmi of 40+, or 35+ with comorbities (i have high blood pressure). There was nothing in my policy about a supervised weight loss time period. My doctors office seems to feel like the insurance approval portion of the process is "easy". I guess I'm a little nervous about being denied for some reason. I really want this surgery. My doctor gave me my surgery date at my 2nd appt with him in December. Has anyone elso gone through an easy insurance approval process like this?? Oh and can someone tell me what I should expect to happen at my pre-op visit today. I know I should just wait since its only 8 hours away but as you can see I am very impatient! -
i am one month n like 2 weeks out n i love broccoli, green beans hmmm, mushrooms, creamed spinach, cauliflower, pretty much i can eat all veggies, as long as they r well steamed . i stay away from celery cus its like a hair ball to the sleeve.. n u dont want that.. i buy the veggie steamers from healthy choice, my local target has them on sale for 1.50 .. they r delicious! with grilled chicken or fish or shrimp hmmm...

I did Medifast for 3 months, lost 22lbs, and promptly gained it all back + 15 more within a year after quiting (I couldn't eat another one of those packet foods/soy Protein bars....yuck!!! It gets old fast). I am just like lipsticklady...until the size of my tummy is smaller, all of my loses will be for not. I am doing this to maintain losses from years ago and stop gaining weight back, and to continue to lose down to my goal. Here's my thoughts, though the decision is yours... yes you will lose weight on Medifast...but how will you maintain it? Have you never lost weight on another diet and failed to maintain the loss? But on the other end of the spectrum...here is a gal who lost the weight with medifast and is maintaining, but she has severely changed her eating habits for life. http://gardengirlkp.blogspot.com/p/about-me.html

Getting Frustrated!!!
Melissannde replied to zeniada's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand how you feel about getting an unfill and then feeling too loose. I had that happen this spring. I pushed through it by pushing extra Water and extra very low calorie fluids, popsicles and extra exercise. I know it's not easy, but it's doable. And if it's your TOM, it's likely not weight from fat you're seeing on the scale, but water retention. Pushing fluids will actually help that. When we're dehydrated our bodies retain Fluid ... if we taken in enough, the body can let the extra go. Take your measurements now and then again next month. When my weight loss is slow, sometimes I'm reshaping. As to exercise, what do you do? Find something that you enjoy doing so you will stick with it. It can be anything from walking to biking to swimming (indoor pool this time of year I hope..lol) to going to a gym to squaredancing to zumba, etc., etc., etc. Anything that gets you up and moving. I exercise pretty intensely almost daily, but I worked up to that. About a year ago all I was doing for exercise was walking my dogs.. Hang in there... -
Putting myself on a pre-op liquid diet

Wow! 70lbs! Thats awesome! I definitely have had similar thoughts. My family and friends have noticed my weight loss, but when I look in the mirror I don't notice it as much. Hopefully that will change after surgery. What insurance do you have? Mines bcbs of Ga(live in nv)? -
No, there isn't a required amount but they like to see a loss which proves that you have modified your behavior, changed your habits and are serious about the program. The dietician said it was normal to gain during a "band holiday". You simply have no restriction and are much more hungry. I survived today!!! I had 8 oz of beef broth twice and I think that saltiness helped me feel a little more normal.

Lapband, VSG, Now RNY Bypass the sequel
Sincerely.blj posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
this is my first post. Hey YALL 😀 I'm Bridgette I had the lap-band placed, corrected, removed within 3yrs of each other back in 2013. Had it removed in 2015. After gaining most of the 80lbs I loss back, I had the VSG in 2017.Since then I have been stuck at 260 for several months, I think the lowest I've gotten with the sleeve was 240ish even with diet and exercise.. the scale is not moving. I'm electing to have the bypass because of the severe GERDS and also to aid in my weight loss. I must admit after ALL of the surgeries I've had. I'm terrified of this one. I keep hearing about the pain being worse than any other. I wanted to get some feedback from others who have had similar surgeries. Can you all post before and after weight loss, and how you all handled the pain with this surgery.. My nerves are bad. Am I over thinking this or are my fears valid? Let me know. Feel free to follow my journey on my IG @sincerely.blj I'll follow back Also I downloaded the app for this website, Am I tripping or is it not working?😂 -
Lapband, VSG, Now RNY Bypass the sequel
catwoman7 replied to Sincerely.blj's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have a virgin RNY, not a revision, but I had almost no pain with this surgery. Part of me wondered at first if he actually even did the surgery... most people getting a revision do get an immediate relief from GERD (not all - but most), and additional weight loss is around 20 lbs, but I'm sure that depends on your BMI and how hard you work at losing weight. I'm sure you can find people who've lost more than that. -
It's been 7 weeks since WLS and life is finally moving on in a more normal fashion. I am returning to work next week and actually looking forward to it! I have been walking, but my weight loss has been stalled since last week. I feel great though and that's what counts. I have started a food journal to help me track what I am actually eating. This week I went to our families big summer barbecue and also celebrated my husband's birthday at a steakhouse. The barbecue was challenging and although I did eat about an ounce more than normal, I felt good about not eating the favorite sweets and such that I normally would have. Out to dinner was easier because there was not a buffet of every food I grew up with on display. The 2 oz plastic cups I take with me everywhere are my savior! They help me stay in control of the portions. My goal for week 8 is to incorporate weight training and get more protein in my daily diet. Here's to continued weight loss!

Advice from vets
seaux_beautiful_vsg replied to seaux_beautiful_vsg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
One thing I will always be with myself is honest. I didn't expect this to be easy. I didn't expect it to happen very quickly I just wondered what other's did. My surgeon was very honest with me that my loss would not happen as quickly as some other's because I didn't go into this weighing the most. I did it because I was diabetic and they could not regulate my blood sugars. I have been fortunate enough to go through this with my best friend who had surgery as well and I have not kept it a secret. I've only had one person, my sister, tell me that I took the easy way out but that's because she's fat and she's jealous. Lol. So it's okay. I realize people will have opinions. I don't have to let them bother me. I am actually good with the way the weight is coming off though... I haven't been 184 lbs in a very long time and so to be here at this stage in my life is amazing to me. One day at a time is how this journey will go for me. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. -
Thank you Good Sir. I have read an abundance of information about this procedure and completely understand that it is a "Tool." Read forums, websites, no books, attended seminars, yes I am very informed about the procedure, possible complications, etc... You have to eat healthy and exercise, I understand that. BCBS TX still requires the 6 month medically supervised weight loss sessions. Psych Eval, not a problem to complete.

Congrats on your weight loss

Hi, I was confused as you are for a while, because I have friends that have had the bypass and then some with the sleeve. They both are doing well but I have to say the deciding factor for me was the fact that the sleeve does let you eat anything you want without the dumping and you know when enough is enough without overeating. I had my sleeve surgery Oct 1st and I have gone from 252lbs to 213lbs. I am very pleased with my results so far and I don't at all regret this decision. Everyone loses at a different pace, so don't base your weight loss on others. My surgeon assured me that within the 2 year mark, I would be at the same weightloss as a bypass patient. Feeling good about that helped my decision as well. If you are diabetic the bypass may be the way to go because it puts diabetes in remission. I was not diabetic so that helped my decision also. I hope this helps you. But you will make the right decision. Happy New Year!

Hi, New to the site with lots of ?'s......
Kat817 replied to Minnesotalady's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I don't know if you watched the Oprah show on GB and addiction a couple of weeks ago, it may have explained some of your sisters issues. I feel the lap band reduces the odds, but does not eliminate them. The problem as I understood it is that one of the reasons we are as overweight as we are is a food addiction. Now if you have an addictive personality, then when you canno longer use food to soothe the demons that led to the addiction, then many turn to alcohol, or whatever and simply change the addiction. I have no idea concerning the divorce, except losing weight finally after many tries, as most of us have gone through, is very free-ing. It empowers you to make changes you had only thought about before. Not knowing why she is doing these things, I would hate to judge any of it. Lap band is less drastic, and not such a sudden loss. It does require more work. But in my opinion it works for me because there is not anything I cannot have at least a little bit of. I was told with bypass sweets were not something I could eat, and I don't do well being told I can't have something, it just makes me want it more!!! Now I can eat some without going overboard. Are you close enough to your sister to discuss these things with her? Go to the seminar, and research all you can!!! This has been a blessing to me, I hope you find the answers you are looking for!!! Banded 7/29 GUILTY!!! and hating myself!!!
LisaB411 replied to Debski's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The reason you aren't supposed to eat a lot of food in the first weeks after surgery isn't really about weight loss. It's about allowing yourself to heal. You most likely have some internal stitches that need to heal. By eating too much you put stress on those stitches and can hurt yourself. If your doctor told you to eat liquids or mushy food, listen to him/her. If you are allowed to eat regular food, take it easy for a few weeks. -
As A Revision Patient, The Risk Of Gastric Sleeve Leaks Is In The Back Of My Mind
thebionicbroad replied to CowgirlJane's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Kimmr, I trust my surgeon's opinion and competence, and I'm holding up my part of the bargain by following the rules. If a leak does develop, I'll know that it wasn't due to something I did wrong. I'll deal with it if it happens. I know my body, and I don't ignore warning signs. The sleeve is one of the safest bariatric procedures out there. I researched thoroughly before I had the sleeve. I never would have agreed to something that I thought would take me away from my DH and family. I'm more afraid of losing my hair than developing a leak. -
I'll bet you are having doubts. Getting so close to your date and in the hospital....just not for the planned reasons......and not for anything that you've directed or were in control off. This is not at all what you were gearing up for....not what you were wanting. You are most likely exhausted and unable to get any semblance of rest. Hard to think clearly under circumstances like this. I see that you are working mighty hard on your weight loss...79 lbs already. I hope that you can heal up.....get well.....get rested and then be able to put everything into perspective and move forward in the direction that you want to go.
