  1. Itโ€™s been a while since Iโ€™ve posted a status. Well, I quit my job at the beginning of the year.ย Yay! Now I have time to focus on my body. Been at the gym consistently this week. Thank God for muscle memory, itโ€™s real. Iโ€™m sore but thatโ€™s a GREAT thing at this point. Iโ€™m still going strong on my WFPB lifestyle. I wonโ€™t ever turn back. I did have a little turkey one Thanksgiving and a little ham on a Christmas though. It was good but not enough to make me stumble. Lol. Iโ€™m just about 8months post (in three days) and Iโ€™m down 81 lbs from myย highest and 74 from surgery. Blood work is always good and no complications ever. One of the best decisions Iโ€™ve made for myself.ย Iโ€™ll post pics next status.ย

Now, I hope I can claim all my expenses from surgery for tax time. Lol

Congrats!!! I am sooo glad to hear that you are back in the gym. I cannot wait to see your progress.

I am starting my taxes, I have claimed over $5,000 in medical expenses. Between, compression garments, protein shakes, payments on hospital stay, co-pays and therapy for my ankle which is still ongoing. I did not realize I spent much. I also wear glasses and contacts and have other medical needs. I believe it is anything that exceeds 10% of you annual income.

Thank you @Sleeve1stFitNext!! I do believe you are very correct about the percentage. Iโ€™m not sure if Iโ€™ll meet that now, since I worked for all of 2017. Oh well...still going to see what it amounts to

  2. I reached my A1C goal of being below 7%. The actual number is 6.7%. I wanted to have a safe margin when it comes time for surgery. They will not perform the surgery with blood sugars that are out of control and the threshold is 8%. Cause for celebration. If I can even push it a little bit lower by the time I am ready to go, so much the better. My endocrinologist was quite pleased but really wants me to be at 6.4% just to give my body the best chance to heal without complications. I can drop .3%. I got this!

    Day 1 of liquid diet

Very true everyone is different. Most Drs from my understand want you to do a full 2 weeks to help less any risk. It helps shrinks your liver too so that it's easier to perform your surgical procedure without complications. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  4. Oh sweetie!! I am so sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can do this, it WILL get better, you are struggling and this is so hard, you are probably being a hero at every moment because you have to handle your health issues and keep your life afloat. I know how hard that is. Are you taking Prilosec twice a day? I had horrible acid reflux and my doc had me take one in the AM and one in the PM. I still do for periods of time and I'm 15 months out. I want you to know it took me 12 weeks to get to the pureed stage. I just took longer to heal as I had a lot going on, i had my gallbladder removed, a massive hiatal hernia repair and the VGS. I wasn't back on my feet in full swing for MONTHS. And I'd read here where people are like "Wow, surgery yesterday, back to work today, feeling great!" and I was SOOO jealous. I also had a LOT of regret. I was a reluctant Sleever, I had a lot of major medical issues and was very close to dying so this was my choice - Sleeve or Die. That's what my doctor actually said to me. But my post surgery complications were difficult and my emotions were at their lowest. It is SOOO hard. Have you tried the Unjury Chicken Broth protein soup? I was like you and nothing stayed down well and I was in a lot of pain. The Unjury CHicken Broth soup saved me. Sure, I was loading up on Sodium but I didn't care at that point. Maybe it will work for you? Also, I was unable to drink anything but water till 14 months out. I also could only eat really soft chicken for the first 12 months. Even now I just mostly eat chicken or pork, I can't eat beef, I can't eat veggies, I can't eat sugars as I get a dumping syndrome. But I am SOOO happy now and I feel amazing. Here is a post I made a few months ago for a young girl who was scared to have the surgery. On it I list the things I used to keep me motivate. Maybe it will help you?? I am so sorry, I am sending you a Word Hug. You got this, even if you think you can't. This is my previous post:
  5. It's normal, and yes, it will pass. As much as I thought I had prepared myself mentally it was still a challenge. I had complications and was in the hospital for almost a week, everything tasted like crap when I got home, was weak and tired all the time, and by the end of 2 weeks I was just depressed from being stuck at home. I think that you'll find when you can start eating some normal foods again and get your energy back you'll start to come around. I don't think I ever really regretted having the surgery but I certainly wasn't the happiest person in the world as I waited to heal and get through the first few weeks. Now I'm coming up on my 1 year mark and have done more in the past year than I did the previous three because of all the health issues I was battling. Despite a rocky start I would still go back and do it all over again. Keep yourself busy with things you enjoy and try to keep your mind off of things. It does get better!
  6. I'm really sorry to hear about all the complications. Hang in there, it's got to get better. Are they putting you on Ursodoil for the gallbladder, if not that may help. One thing that may help with the liquids is drinking something warm. Either some kind of herbal tea (maybe like peppermint or something else that may also help nausea) or just warm water. I personally find that light cocoa goes down really easily VS water or anything else and warm liquids were a life saver early on (I had some complications the first week and had to go back to the hospital because I couldn't swallow anything). Hang in there it'll get better!
  7. I have been debating on posting all of this because Iโ€™m tired of living it day to day [emoji25] I am 4 weeks post op and feel like this is the most horrible decision Iโ€™ve made. Here is a list of what has been going on : - I am unable to drink anything other than water and sometimes apple juice or popsicles. Anything thicker comes right back up. Broth, flavored drinks, etc will not stay down. - I have acid that brings me to tears and wakes me up at night (all night), it makes me feel like Iโ€™m going to vomit fire. I am currently taking Prilosec, Zantac, Carafate, and Magic Mouthwash. - Iโ€™m exhausted because Iโ€™m not consuming any protein or other nutrients. Iโ€™m exhausted because I try to sleep sitting straight up. Any incline makes the acid worse. - I feel like there is a lump rising up right before I vomit and/or get the acid burn. My doctor is aware of everything that is going on. He said Iโ€™m in a small percent that gets this really bad GERD or reflux and later down the road we might have to do a sleeve to bypass revision. Iโ€™m really not okay with that option because I had complications after the sleeve surgery. He isnโ€™t really worried about my lack of nutrients at this point because Iโ€™m โ€œonlyโ€ 4 weeks out. I know guys, only four weeks, but in all honesty Iโ€™m miserable 24 hours a day. I have kids, I have a full time job, and I seriously canโ€™t continue like this. I was also told I now have sludge in my gallbladder so it may need to be removed later. If anyone can relate to this or tell me it will all be okay I would really appreciate it. Iโ€™m at my breaking point and am very disappointed in myself for electing to have this surgery.

    OCTOBER SLEEVERS CHECK IN HERE

Its been almost four months. I'm pretty happy with my results so far (and lack of complications). I'm wearing size 38 jeans now (haven't worn that size in over 30 years). My weight loss seems to come in spurts. I'll lose a pound or two per day for a couple of days and then nothing for a week and then the cycle starts again. I've been trying to ratchet up my physical activity (lots of walking, swimming, and I just started back at the gym weight training). My new girlfriend works out hardcore -- I've got to up my game to keep up.

Side Effects of Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

There's a long list, your surgeon probably has one they'll make you sign before surgery. Here's a decent online list from another practice. https://www.ALM.com/weight-loss-surgery-options/vertical-sleeve-gastrectomy/#thesideeffects . Personally the largest side effect I've noticed is lack of appetite, weight loss, some mild mood swings and fatigue :-) You probably want to ask about complications and complication rates at your specific practice as well, those should be enlightening and you can talk about your personal risk factors for them with the team since they know the situation and should have lots of experience.
  11. Has anyone had to deal with any sleeve post op complications not related to a leak, or just had a hard time healing in general? I am 8 days post op and I donโ€™t feel like Iโ€™m healing well. I have a significant amount of pain in my upper right quadrant. The whole area is still swollen and tender to the touch. Actually a bit more than โ€œtenderโ€. This morning I did a gentle cough, and searing ripping pain went through the area. It actually made me cry hard. I called my surgeon yesterday about the swelling and the general pain in the area and they werenโ€™t concerned and told me to take my pain meds. But now that this searing pain from practically clearing my throat has caused me to have to lay down and not move, itโ€™s making me feel a little anxious. I donโ€™t go back in for follow up until late next week. Iโ€™m trying not to overreact, but Iโ€™m also trying to take care of myself.
  12. Trying to check-in with some folks that had their sleeve done last January like myself. For me I've been stuck at the same weight for the past two months. Focusing again on the little things. Upping my protein, cutting out carbs where I can, getting more active. This winter has slowed me down but now that the holidays are over I'm ready to get focused again. I am happy to say I didn't gain any weight over the holidays. That is a first ever for me so I need to find some silver lining for being in this stall for so long. Coming up on a year and it's hard to believe how much has changed. Despite some initial complications and a rough first month I'm so happy that I went through with WLS after debating it for so many years. When I went to my first consultation meeting in May 2017 I was back up to 350-355 lbs. By the day of surgery I was at 318 lbs. Now weighing in at 235-237. I was really hopeful to hit 225 by the time of my 1 year anniversary. Might happen if I can get things to kick in again. Part of why I'm starting this thread is to get my head on straight again and keep things dialed in. For the record I'm not falling back into old habits or anything, but need to get my exercise up and tweak my diet. My biggest struggle at this point is still having the same "shape" even though there's a helluva lot less of it. I feel so much better than I did from a year ago. The health benefits have been unreal. Just can't get my eyes/mind around it at times. Hope everyone else has had a good first year after their surgery!
  13. I am so sorry you have gone through so much. My situation is not quite as severe but I do have a sharp angled bend in my new pouch, which is the presumed cause of my vomiting since about a week post op. I had balloon dilation and vomiting resolved for a little over a week then returned. My surgeon thinks serial balloon dilations may work but I know this treatment is more suited to strictures and he admitted to never having a patient with this complication. Have you been to the Cleveland Clinic yet? Any update on progress and how you are feeling?

Pre-Op Liquid Only 2 Week Diet - Help

Girl, that is terrible Every doctor is different. Every diet is different The whole point of the diet preop is to A. prepare you for a healthier lifestyle but mainly to shrink your live and avoid complications. With my 2 week preop diet, we could drink chicken broth, sugar free jellow and sugar free popcycles. All different kinds of sugar free low calorie drinks, wylers, diet snapple, poweraid zero etc.. Let's see, oh yea, and if we only elected to have 2 protein drinks ( I didn't want three of those things, not a fan of protein drinks ) we could elect to have one small meal (4 ounces of chicken, fish etc etc) one small vegetable, and one small fat, like 1 teashpon of light ranch dressing etc.. We could have coffee, but no flavored creamer There were guidlines but girl, that one meal a day got me through and that was HARD enough I am so sorry
  15. I had gastric bypass a year agro, all went well and I didn't have any complications. I rarely dump, only when I overeat or eat to much sugar, but that would only be like once a month at most. I just ate some cheese (no light version) and after that I started having heart palpitations with a heart rate around 135 bpm. I read that you can get that as a dumping syndrome but this is new to me, I always watch what I eat and rarely dump and when I do it's only some light discomfort. I'm feeling really uncomfortable right now, I'm kinda scared especially seeing I have such high heart rate and my chest hurts. But that's normal right, no need to see a Dr?

    Any January 2018 Sleevers?

Surgery was Monday the 8th. Getting discharged today. I'm excited about the future. I still have concerns about getting in the requirements and what\when to tell those who start to ask, but I'm sure it will be all worth it. I'm 54 years old and weight has been a life long battle. I knew that this had to be done so that I could enjoy the rest of my life without so many meds and complications from excess weight. Sent from my SM-T560NU using BariatricPal mobile app

    Depression after gastric bypass surgery

I had a sleeve done but yes, lot of people go through a depression phase. My surgery had some complications so it took longer to bounce back. It's easy to get down when you're limited on what you can do and eating/drinking is a chore. More so since we've all obviously struggled with food and not being able to go back to old (bad) habits of eating when feeling down makes it all the more difficult. Try to keep yourself as busy as possible. Whether reading a book, doing what activities you can (hell I remember being happy to run the vaccum when I finally had enough energy), or any other hobby it helps to keep yourself occupied. By the end of my 2 1/2 weeks off of work I was pretty miserable being at home that long. The upside is that it will get better. As you heal up and it gets easier to eat/drink more and you can start adding more foods into your diet you'll see a big upswing in your mood.

    Recovery Time

My RNY was done by open surgery - cut from navel up to rib cage, ribs spread apart, when whole 9 yards. (complications from previous gastric band). So - your surgical worst-case scenario basically! Within 2 weeks I was happily walking, but still fatigued very easily. 4 weeks and I feel like normal, no more fatigue, but lifting weights isnโ€™t allowed until 6 weeks.
  19. I went with sleeve because it seemed to have very good results (second only to bypass) but some of the lowest rates of complications. I also liked that it lets you keep the natural order of your digestive system... a smaller stomach of course, but the same flow.
  20. Be SUPER honest about your health issues if you have any then ask: How much weight will you need to lose prior which surgeries they believe would help you the most What is the rate of complication with each surgery what the waiting period will be with your insurance if you are using insurance What the rate of failure and revision is for the practice What types of supports are available before , during and after surgery How long is the hospital stay Will they use surgical tape, glue or stitches Will you have a drain How many incisions will you receive and their locations CONGRATS

Sleeve to loop duodenal switch (SIPS)

I had SIPS in April, 2017. I have done very well with it. No complications and I've lost 82 lbs. thus far.
  22. I had a similar concern with the staples given the sleeve is a newer procedure. It turns out they use the same staples in the bypass as well, which is a much older procedure. As for other complications you can talk to your surgeon about them, most centers will keep their own stats on complication rates. In my case the surgeon has been doing bariatric procedures for 17 years and his own info was extremely helpful. I asked how many people he had die and why (turned out it as only a few in that entire time). I also talked about life expectancy after the procedure and we talked about a couple studies that were done (weirdly your risk of accidental death is higher after surgery according to one study for some unknown reason - but generally it's far less than doing nothing). Staples and other things from surgery are used in other procedures as well, so you may be able to do some research on that avenue if you want. The one thing that was totally clear to me was that the risk of staying as I was, was far greater than any risk imposed by the surgery long or short term. The risks of obesity are well researched and proven, so that part of the analysis is unfortunately very easy.

    GASTRIC BYPASS OR LOOP DS???

My surgeon said my starting BMI wasn't high enough for DS, so I never looked into it, sorry. In general I'd say the less complicated the surgery, the better; that's why I chose VSG over gastric bypass.
  24. The way my doc explained is is that as your stomach heals it basically heals "over" the staples. Something about the way the scar tissue forms it does so around the staples. Yes, there is risk of developing a leak down the road, but it's not a common thing. As with any surgery there are risks. With WLS you have to carefully weigh out the pros & cons (no pun intended). For many of us it was the risks that other health issues could cause by continuing to be overweight. It's good that you're already looking at it that way. Keep in mind that forums such as this can sometimes skew your perception of things. Lot of people may only post when they're having issues. In my experience however it's safe to say those that are happy with their choice to have WLS greatly outnumbers those that regret it. It's easy for me to say how happy I am with my choice when I haven't had the struggles that others have, and my heart goes out to them. Despite having some initial bumps in my road with a few complications it was worth it for me, and I'd do it all over again now that I've seen the results. This is a bigger mental challenge/battle than most people expect so it's good to be cautious and think things through completely.

    Week one- two pounds down?

I was in the hospital 6 days due to complications. I came home weighing 5 pounds MORE than I did the day of surgery. They pumped so many fluids into me that it took several days to get back to where I was prior to surgery. After that things kicked in. We all get anxious to see the scale start dropping but give it time. There are always going to be differences between people. Too many factors such as genetics, age, sex, how much weight you have to lose, etc. It's kind of like comparing gas mileage between 50 different cars. Some may be the same and others will be drastically different.
