  1. I lived in leggings, same X-Large size, from my highest weight until now. It was only when I went through my closet that I realized the size 18, 16 and 14s pants/jeans were falling off. So I bit the bullet and went to the mall to buy new jeans. Tried on the next reasonable size 12, and it was too big. Settled into a 10, which stretches out with wear and needs a belt, but I am happy to say that the weight loss did eventually end up in smaller size jeans! Don't be discouraged by clothes size. You will hit a point where it seems like you are dropping a size every week. But everyone losses weight differently. And if you're like me, I carried a lot of my weight in my gut area. Be excited about loosing 50 lbs.! Congratulations and keep doing what you're doing - it obviously is working!
  2. I dress in layers ALL the time. But I have hot flashes, so it is sweater on sweater off sweater on sweater off. LOL At 68 thought I would be past hot flashes... Must use a pillow between my leg as or my knees hurt Also sitting on certain chairs make my tailbone hurt ( Never had THAT problem before WLS) LOL At 1yr 8months post-op I am still breaking out Have lost 1/2 a shoe size Not happy with extra skin, but at my age not going to spend megabucks on plastics surgery I can move sooooo much better than I could 10- 20 years ago so much more energy, LOVE buying single digit size clothes So grateful to God for all these changes!!!

    Dr Dolan, Perth, Australia?

Hello, hello, It's already 2021 end of February. How are you ? At the beginning of last November, in 2020: I had seen Dr. Kevin Dolan twice and he was insistent I needed my lap band removed. He had gotten on the telephone to my wonderful Gp several times and had discussed with her the difficulties I was having which were: vomiting, pain wasn't able to eat sometimes for about two weeks. BUT my private insurance had lapsed. I immediately rang and had it put back on. Dr. Dolan said that my lap band had slipped but boy, I didn't realize how ill I actually was. I went to the hospital emergency twice, the first time with my Mum and emergency Doctors told me to go home and the second time, they admitted me........after my boyfriend was screaming that no one seemed to be hearing my problems, All of a sudden, everything changed and a wonderful surgeon came to see me that I was to be operated on within 2 hours. My Mum and son went to get something to eat and came back to an empty bed. The surgeon was WONDERFUL: Dr. Foo was his name. He said that I was that far away from developing a huge hole in my tummy from an eroding lap band. Fortunately, he had removed all erosion from my tummy. PROBLEMS: from 2 November to 20th Feb 2021 Gained 10 kilos !!!! How has this happened ??? My Psychotherapist and I are definitely discussing me getting a sleeve. Dr. Dolan offered to give me a gastric sleeve. I have scars all through my Tummy, I can see Dr. Foo or Dr. Dolan, does anyone have any comments ?? Thanks for reading: Annie

    ONDERLAND!!!! and NSV's

FINALLY! Onederland! I can't remember the last time I didn't see a "2" as the first number on the scale. Seeing the "1" this weekend was just surreal. I think I must have stepped on and off the scale at least 10 times. What a motivator! I feel like I've accomplished the impossible and now ANYTHING is possible!! ~40 to go (I'd like to hit 50 just to have some wiggle room). For those who might be struggling after the first couple of months - Months 1-3 were EASY - weight just fell off. Month 4+, slowed A LOT (as in less than 8 a month) - Being able to eat pretty much anything I wanted without having an upset stomach didn't help. I was hoping to be under 200 by the end of December. Stalled (much of it my fault for choices I made, and simply my body catching up), got frustrated, felt sorry for myself, etc...and at times even wondered if it was possible or if I was just going to stop there with my weight loss. Booked a vacation and decided that I WOULD be under 200 before I left (next Sunday - nothing like cutting it close!). Got back on plan, made better choices, and quit feeling sorry for myself and WOO HOO - Major goal #1 accomplished. If you're struggling, hang in there, refocus, know you aren't alone in this journey and make up your mind that you CAN do this. NSV's this week - I didn't see the "OMG, PLEASE let this fat lady be seated ANYWHERE but beside ME on a plane" look. People actually look me in the eye rather than past me. Servers @ restaurants are concerned that the food they served me wasn't good because I didn't eat much. I got more work accomplished onsite because I didn't need a lunch break (quick protein bar and I was good to go). I could go to ANY store and buy some cheap clothes for vacation - Can't wait to rock that bathing suit coverup in Hawaii next week!
  7. Thank you so much for your reply. I’ve been working with the counselor diligently. I was mentally stronger than I’ve been in my entire life going into sx, because going to the ER with BP so high it was in the “stroke” zone at 29 and being told I’m going to end up killing my self, really woke me up. I guess in all of the pre-op counseling, we worked through so much, including judgments from others. But I never in a MILLION years considered that these people that I considered more sisters than friends would do this. It’s just disheartening. Maybe it’s because they’re all the size I was when I started this and it’s projected jealousy. I haven’t told anyone else about the surgery but them and my parents because we have always supported each other no matter what. So for 3/5 of my support system to peace out on day 10 post op was just overwhelming. I’ll definitely be talking to my therapist this week about how to do this without my circle, but in a way that’s healthy and conducive to my journey not just physically but mentally!! thanks so much, I appreciate you!
  8. Hi y’all, I’m back for some support because I can feel mine waning so quickly it’s actually outpacing my weight loss. So today I got to see a friend for a second for the first time since November. (I’ve lost 48 lbs since then). She told me I looked “sickly” and “50 lbs is plenty” and that I was going to regret “butchering my body” in 10 years when I end up back where I started. She said all what I’ve done is undermined the hard work that people like her have put in to do it “the non cheaters way out.” I was actually stunned to hear those words uttered to me. I’m not trying to toot my own horn, but I’m nice to a fault, like I get told by people all the time I have no mean bone in my body. I didn’t have the guts to stand up for myself in that moment. I would never dream of being unsupportive of ANYONE trying to better themselves. So seeing people I’ve confided in and spent so much time with in my adult life turn on me for something that was done for health reasons that would have eventually killed me, has absolutely demoralized me. I don’t need to be coddled, but a little bit of “yeah we’ve seen first hand, your health deteriorate in the last 2 years, this is definitely something that’s going to help you so we’re here” would just mean a lot. But alas, I guess my expectations are too high. This is my 3rd friend in 3 weeks to completely rail on me and tell me how dumb I am or how big of a failure I’m going to be, and I don’t think this isn’t the kind of journey that I can do on my own. I don’t know what to do, I don’t know who to confide in, and I don’t know how to convince myself that people are gonna judge and I’m just going to have to be okay with it. But I’m struggling. Never thought doing something to save my life would rid me of all my 3 best friends. And these aren’t co-workers or acquaintances, these are hang out every weekend, talk daily, been doing it for 5 years, type of people. How do I get through this? Any advice is welcomed and appreciated. Sorry for being so long winded. If you read this far, thank you. I just needed to vent.

2 days out after Gastric Sleeve

Hi Frankie! Congrats on your surgery. I was sleeved 2/10 and I was literally only able to take more than one tiny sip every 30 minutes yesterday. I say and slept upright for over a week because of the “pooling in my chest.” Surgeon said some people just get really really swollen post -op and it makes the restriction even worse!! Just try and take in as much fluid as you can in any way that you can. You can stick it out a few more days! You’ll wake up one day and feel WAY better. Trust me I didn’t believe anyone who told me that when I was miserable the first 6 days!!! I wish you the best of luck! It does get better, hang in there!

    Iron deficiency

10 is really low - and yes, a lot of surgeons will refer you for an infusion when it drops below about 20. A few will even recommend an infusion when it's below 50. Ferritin is one of the few levels that can be difficult to bring up when it's that low without an infusion, although some people have done it (I managed to bring mine up with oral supplements, but it was never as low as yours - I think it was around 30). when mine was low, they also had me increase my oral supplements. Then they retested two or three months later, and it was fine.

    Breaking Point

it happened for me during a routine physical. My doctor told me I needed to lose weight, which of course he always said (and I responded with my usual "I know, I know...."). This time he was quite blunt: he said that I did not take drastic action, I would likely have a major cardiac incident within 10-12 years that I might not survive. (I was 59 at the time.). He referred me to a local bariatric surgeon, and the rest is history.
  12. I had to pack up part of my house for selling it and seem to have misplaced my measuring tape. December 10 - January 31st (last time I measured) I lost 25 inches, but you're right... Most of them aren't from the gut which is the most noticeable place to me. I know that's a big number, I just can't seem to see it myself and my pants shouldn't be the way I am judging my failure/success.

    65 yr olds with bypass

I am 68 y.o., had Gastric Bypass 06/19. Lost 80lbs in approx 6 months. Didn’t exercise much. But felt so much more energy. My personal goal was to be able to get down on the floor (AND get up without help) so I could play with my grandchildren. AND to be healthy!!!! I had Arthritis, sleep Apnea, hypothyroidism. Now approaching 2 years post-op, I have gained 7 lbs which I swore to myself I would NEVER do. Getting depressed thinking the bypass is not working, etc. Happened to come across a book on Amazon written by 2 Dieticians who work with WLS pets. The Complete Guide to Weight Loss Surgery, your questions finally answered by Kaouk and Bashaw. It has helped bring me back to basics. As in slowing down to eat, chew slowly, do not drink while eating, eat protein first. Have been very stressed over this 7 lbs. My main issue has always been night time eating. Now I am excited to gain back control over my life once again. So glad to see other people who had their WLS at my age. We can do this!!!!

    Breaking Point

I failed my work physical because my blood pressure was too high. Right after that, I started a new job that didn't require me to pass a physical, so I actually just kept ignoring my health for another year or so. But my new job was a desk job, unlike my old job that required a lot of walking, so I gained even more weight and got even more out of shape and I got to the point that I could only walk a short distance without getting sweaty and out of breath. The failed work physical kept nagging at me, and every time I watched a medical-themed TV show where a patient had a stroke or heart attack, I would see myself there, so I finally decided to go to a doctor (I hadn't been to one in almost 10 years). They were talking about putting me on medication for hypertension and diabetes and I didn't like the future I was seeing, of being someone with all these medical problems, going to the doctor all the time, taking a bunch of medications. I've tried losing weight so many times that I had given up on it by then. Weight loss surgery seemed so extreme -- a last resort -- and I really didn't want to do it, but I came to the realization that it was time to go to that last resort.

    Breaking Point

For me it was really basic. I had a painful knee that I had suffered with for 37 years and I wanted to get a knee replacement. They wouldn't do it at the weight I was then, so I took the plunge. I had my bariatric surgery in March 2019 and my knee was replaced in August 2020. It's SO GOOD being out of pain now!

    Calorie intake

As noted, it can be very individual, but my gut feel from being around these places for years is that it high for the majority of people. I was probably touching that sometimes at that point, but I was losing 10 lb per month consistently and within 10 lb of my goal weight, so I was trying to ramp up my consumption to slow my loss and ease into maintenance (and I have a guy's metabolism, which tends to let us get away with more.) How is your weight loss going? How close to goal are you? Do you have any idea how much you were consuming before surgery when your weight was stable (i.e. what was your total metabolism)? For many people, 1500 calories, give or take a bit, will be their maintenance level. In short, your current loss rate and how far you are to goal should be the major determining factors. Also, be aware that typically, our loss rate tends to decrease over time as our total metabolism tends to decline as we lose weight (it simply takes fewer calories to move 200 lb around than 200, and fewer still to move 150 lb, etc., so it is usually best to avoid increasing our intake over time until we are ready to stop losing. Good luck,
  18. Hello everyone! I’m glad to be a part of this group and look forward to sharing and hearing about everyone’s journey, whether it’s contemplating weight loss surgery, newly post op like myself, or those with years of experience. I feel there is value in learning from everyone. so for me, I have struggled my whole life with my weight. I have been up....and I’ve been down, but for me the weight always finds it’s way back to me. I know everyone has their own personal reason for having this procedure. My reason is more than just to lose weight. I have very significant spinal degeneration and have already had three spinal fusions on my low to middle back. Every surgery I am left with more debilitating symptoms. My hope is that with the gastric sleeve as my tool, I can lose the weight and actually keep it of. Less stress on my spine may buy me time until I need another spinal surgery. My journey has been a long one, but I hung in there! Lol I began my 6 months of managed weight loss on December 18, 2019. I only had one month left until I would qualify for surgery, but my back surgery in March of 2020 left me unable to return to work. I lost my job AND my insurance. Luckily I was able to get on my husbands insurance fairly quick, but because I skipped a month of weight management appointments I had to start the whole process over again! Needless to say, it was a long road to travel, but on February 1st (surgery day) I was down 60 lbs! My starting weight was 275, so I went into surgery at 215lbs. Here I am today at day 20 and for the most part things are going well. I am down another 13 lbs and starting my second week on puréed diet Monday. My biggest issue so far is heartburn!! I was already taking Omeprazole 40mg but the reflux is persistent! My bariatric nurse advised me it’s ok to take 1 tums and that has helped some. Has anyone else had persistent heartburn post op, and did it go away after a while? So far that is my biggest concern. By the way, I didn’t mention my goal weight is 150, so I now have 52 lbs to go. I see many of you are losing lots of weight very quickly. I sometimes feel like my surgery wasn’t as effective, but I try to remind myself that it may be slower for me. well, that’s my story! I look forward to hearing from others as I continue my journey! Thank you!

Some Surprises I didn't expect with WLS

My shoe size has also changed from a 10WW to a 9W. Even though I lost so much weight, my feet are always a problem due to neuropathy. Dressing in layers is something I never had to do before, I was always hot before. I can do housework now. I couldn't even vacuum before. My bum is completely gone, and it hurts when I sit down even after 10 minutes or so. The really weird thing is that my freckles have come back. I used to only get them in the summer. It is dead winter here, and they are all over my face. I used to drink ice cold water, and now can only drink room temp. The biggest one for me is that I can walk without a cane. No longer have to use a wheelchair to get around. I am sure there are lots more....it is a journey.

    What to do

I’m 10 days post op what’s wrong with me why can feel like notch in my stomach telling me I’m full I’m not sure what’s supposed feel like is there something wrong with me
  21. Well I was doing good there for awhile by getting down to 170.0 pounds when I weighed myself on December 16, 2020. Then I got all the way up to 175.4 on February 10, 2021, when I weighed myself that day. Today, I weighed myself and am now at 172.2 pounds. All I can say that COVID, regular work stress and work stress related to COVID did NOT help matters. Hoping with the warmer weather coming that I can shake some more weight off before I see the surgery team for 1 Year Appointment and Surgery Anniversary.

    This Pre-op diet is a b$@!:

Thank you, it will definitely pass. I actually just receive an email with a new surgery date of 3/10. I should just stick with the liquid diet till then.

    Bariatric multivitamin

The BariatricPal Multivitamin One vitamins are the best-priced bariatric multivitamins I've seen. If you buy the ones with iron, you might not have to take a separate iron supplement. They have a yearly subscription for $99.99, which is $8.33/month. You can buy them in smaller quantities (which I recommend doing to start to make sure you like them), but the more you buy, the lower the cost per vitamin. They do have a chewable one that you can take right after surgery, but I didn't care for the taste (I took Barimelts for the first two months, but they are pricey). You can take normal drugstore vitamins, but you have to take a double dose, and if you do that, the BariatricPal subscription is cheaper than most of the drugstore vitamins. You will have to take a separate calcium citrate supplement (make sure it's calcium citrate, not calcium carbonate). I LOVE the BariatricPal Belgian chocolate caramel and French vanilla caramel soft chews -- they taste like candy and make me look forward to taking my calcium. They are the lowest-priced calcium citrate chews I've seen (and they go on sale often), but you can get calcium citrate tablets for a lower price (about 1/3 of the price of soft chews per dose). I buy Caltrate petites and take those 1x per day (2 pills per dose) and soft chews 2x per day. You will also need vitamin B-12, which you can get as a sublingual tablet, injection, or nasal spray. I buy NatureMade brand sublingual tablets from Amazon. They are very inexpensive -- less than $10 for 50.

    This Pre-op diet is a b$@!:

Hello, new here. I was scheduled for February 18th for surgery, but due to no power and water in Houston it was canceled. I was on my 4th day of pre-op liquid diet, but stopped b/c of the cancellation and all the things going on right now. I’m going to start back on it tomorrow so I can be prepared when they reschedule my surgery. By day 3 I was okay, but the first two days were hard. It would be nice to lose 10-20 lbs before surgery. We got this, is just temporary.

    65 yr olds with bypass

Hi there. I was 65 when I had the RNY bypass. This April 28 I will be four years out and in September I turn 70. I am 4ft 11” tall and weighed 248.9 when I had the surgery. I wore a very tight and uncomfortable size 22. I suffered from asthma and needed a Cpap machine. I lost one half of myself. At 124 and between a size 4 or 6 depending on how its made, I have enjoyed many shopping trips to replace my wardrobe. I remember standing in front of a full length mirror in size 16 jeans and staring at my reflection with tears running down my face for at least fifteen minutes. I couldnt believe the difference. I didnt know the person I was looking at. While that was important the very best that happened was that my asthma is gone. Totally gone and I dont need to hook up to the cpap machine any more either. I have crazy energy. I opened a store at the end of 2019 and went to Legoland with my daughter and grandchildren and kept up with them and fit in the roller coaster seat with the bar all the way down. I feel better gaining on 70 than I did at 45. My only regret is that I didnt do it sooner. I missed so much before surgery. Here is my advice to you. Read everything you can. Get out of bed after surgery and walk the gas out which moves the pain out. Follow the diet you get from the nutritionist. Go into this with a very positive attitude and let life fill your heart and soul. Enjoy every day of your life and keep a diary with honest statements of what you are seeing and feeling. It will get you thru when you finally realize that person staring back in the mirror is really you. Good luck.
