    Help Needed

That is a long time to wait for an appt. with the doc. Mine wanted me back 7-10 days after surgery.... no exceptions. I'll definately let you know on Thursday what he says. I'm still trying to figure out the gas vs. hunger pain thing. I started taking gasX yesterday and that has really helped. Before I'd be so bloated thinking I was full but my stomach would be rumbling like crazy and I'd think I was starving. When in doubt....drink water, lol, it helps a little bit.

    Scale Torture

Thanks all. I think scale "torture" may have been overkill- I’m not obsessed with it and don’t let it get in the way of my life or my program. I just find it surprising that such big swings can be seen overnight... The fact that 5 lbs is gone just from using whatever waters leftover in your system & burning reserves while you sleep is fascinating to me. I do like to track my weight as I photograph myself every 10 lbs lost. I usually take photos at night, and this is part of why I track my end-of-day weight even if it may be less consistent than my morning weight.

Not all H2O is created equal

Omg - arsenic in be water... On the west coast we are dealing with radioactive water from Fukushima Japan: http://www.washingtonsblog.com/2012/07/radiation-in-west-coast-of-north-america-could-be-10-times-higher-than-japan.html See the nice stream of red radioactivity hitting us? It is coming in the form of rain also. http://www.king5.com/news/environment/High-levels-of-radiation-detected-in-Northwest-rainwater--125391598.html Hopefully we have controls in place to remove this from our drinking water. I have already heard cases of thyroid cancer are way up on the west coast.

  6. My suggestion would be try to do a little each day. Maybe just 10 minuets a day. Work your way up to an hour a day. That seems like a lot in the beginning, but really, once you get into it, it isn't!!! I look forward to my workout everyday now and could not imagine saying that 6 months ago. I HATED EXERCISE!!! Once I put those shoes on and walk out the door, I am so glad that I did!!! The more you do, the more you want to do! It is so amazing when you really see how much you can do! And when you see the benefits you get from it, you WILL want to do more. Start with a 10 minute walk today and tomorrow and try to do more next week! One day at a time! Good luck! Kelly

    Pre Admission Testing

I began this journey towards a healthier life in March. Finally I have a date, August 1, 2012. Today I spent the morning at the Barix clinic in Pennsylvania. I had preadmission testing. After agreeing to give them my first born child if I couldn't pay my bill, (haha, no one wants a .22 year old journalism major), the fun began. I stepped on the scale. I was down 6 pounds from my consult. This is only about 1 1/2 pounds a month, but apparently was not expected. Everyone who entered my room started with "Wow, you've lost weight already." I thought this was the expectation, after all we all want a tinier liver before surgery. In my exam room I was given a gown that actually met in the back. Wow, love a bariatric specialty hospital. Next came the blood draw. My phlebotomist was excellent. As she says, "I do this every day" Thank God, because I really hate when people go fishing for my veins. Next the nurse came in to do an H & P, however the computer put a hate on her, so on to xrays. Had a total of 5 takes for 2 pictures, the first was fine, view 2- into the developer too soon. Repeat of view 2- artifact on the film from the developer. Shot 3 of the second view, I coughed which is not a good idea during a chest xray. Shot 4 after juice and a break=success. Next up- Respiratory therapy. First up, she did my EKG- no I am not confused, small hospital- every one has multiple jobs. Lesson for the day- Powder and EKG tabs don't mix. Then on to spirometer practice. You get to bring this home to practice before surgery. One more thing on the list- looks like a hooka attached to a piston. Next pulmonary function tests or PFTs. Does anyone ever realize how hard it is to exhale forcefully over 10 seconds? Apparently the 4th time was the charm. Yeah! Jen the nurse is back and has conquered the computer gremlin. She does a history, then gives me my preadmission and discharge instructions. What a great system. Patients should know what to expect before every surgery. My next visitor is Elana. She is the dietician. I am now the proud receipent of a glossy magazine style book with all my rules and recipes for taking care of my sleeve. She also reviews how to read a label and gives protien shake samples. I wish you could sample all, because some taste like medicine instead of food. My last hurdle- the independent physician exam. The good news, I passed, the bad, I still have low iron and ferritin levels as well as low B-12 levels. Back on supplements. How can someone who weighs almost 300 lbs now have enough nutrients? One of life's ironies I guess. After 3 hours I am on my way with a very heavy tote bag, B-12 tablets and overwhelming information. Now to digest everything in the next 2 weeks.

New to this support board- HI

Thank you for your kind support. In the end, I know I am taking much better care of myself with my food choices, volume, drinking more water and my swimming than I have in a long time. That is the kind of help you can not see as it is going on inside !! You too are doing great at 8-10 a month. My first goal is to get below 200- have not seen that since 1991 !!!!!

    Help!

I had bad gas pain for 10 days after surgery. With walking it got worse before getting amazing better. Hot drinks worked well for me, especially pepermint tea...or a pepermint droped in some hot water. It gets better I promise! I am 5 weeks post surgery and feeling great (20lbs down). Still get some gas pain now and then but I'm used to it now. Good luck!
  10. Hello My Name Is Michelle. My Doctor Is Dr.spivak.i Was Banded On Oct 16,2006. I Want To Know If Any One Has Felt Like Thay Were Eating Too Much?i Do I Think I Need A Fill.or Maybe Its Me. I've Only Lost 10 Lbs And I Know Some People Lose 30 Lbs In There First Month.what Should I Be Eating Becouse Now I Can Get Mostly Anything Down?
  11. My MDs diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery include: 10 oz lean protein/day 2 servings of fruit 2+ servings vegetables at least 64 oz water/day no grains at all and no Protein suplements before.
  12. Are you losing at a rate that works for you? It's a good question... and I'm probably not qualified to answer, but that won't keep me from throwing in my two cents... IMO, being so tight that you can't get in your calories is a much bigger problem than being a little less restricted. I would *hate* to be restricted to a 1/2 c or so of food in total at a meal. If I choose high quality food- lean Protein, fruits/veggies, whole grains... I can fill my salad plate, eat that and not be full- but not be hungry either. Even with this volume of food- my calories are probably 1200-1500 per day (which has allowed me to lose continuously) since my surgery. The point being that this quantity of food (which is larger than many on here claim to be eating per meal) puts me at a comfortable place- AND I know that I'm getting in enough Fiber, calories, vitamins/min, fruits/veggies etc each day. Sorry for the novel! My doctor and nutritionist recommend eating a small platefull at each meal (well balanced)-- which is about the amount in a Lean Cuisine- which is often about 10 oz. Hope there's something useful in this rambling post of mine...

    Exercise & Fitbit

I got my fitbit a week ago. I did some research about it before buying. In several studies the fitbit had an almost perfect score in calculating your steps. Best score for heartbeat accuracy. Best place to wear it is 1 to 2 fingers width ABOVE your WRIST bone. Not to tightly or will hinder accuracy. For me it took some getting use to wearing it higher up on my arm. I also have to check if the fitbit has slid down to my wrist and is loosely turning. I started wearing a bracelet under fitbit and am now comfortably wearing fitbit above wrist bone. Overall the Fitbit Charge 2 (which is the model I have) scored the highest out of all other wrist trackers. I wear a 7 1/4 bracelet. I was going to get the small band but got the large one because of placement above wrist. I got the plum color and love it. Goes with everything. The sales person at best buy suggested I try Amazon to buy additional bands. For a "fitbit" brand name costs around a $100 . (Fitbit hasn't come out with additional band colors for the charge 2 yet) On amazon you can by bands that will work with fitbit products. For charge 2 you can get 10 colors for 39.99 Merry Christmas to me. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-T337A using the BariatricPal App

Hiya I was banded March 19, 2010, I am 27 years old, so i am out of college but If you still need a buddy let me know:) I started at 302lb , I am around 225 lbs now.

  16. I've had 600 calories today at 6 weeks out and I stretched out a meal over 50 minutes today. It's the first and last time I'm going to do this, as I normally have a meal within 20 minutes but today, I took my tuna (one can) It's the small can- not a mini one but the small one, I think around 4oz of tuna. I took the oil out and ate it on it's own on my little baby plate lol. I ate what I could and left the plate for 10 minutes and went back to it, finishing it in 50 minutes. Well, I know I'm paranoid, but reading what other people can eat I feel it might be too much! But then I thought, maybe it's because I didn't do my normal thing of setting a time limit. I can not eat chicken in this way so I suspect it's the fact that it's soft Protein, that enables me to eat a little more of it. I'm nervous my sleeve has stretched but logically I'm thinking, how has it stretched? It's just I compare myself to so many others with what they can and can't eat. I know I sound SO paranoid but I'm scared to ruin my sleeve. Anyone else get this fear? Saying that, I have to try and get to 600 calories a day, or I would comfortably stop at 300. I've always been more of a volume eater than a grazer and nowadays, I get bored with eating my meals. The portions are so tiny I have to have 6 meals to get to at least 600 calories so I guess today I put the tuna on my plate and thought I would eat it slowly. Lesson learned! back to 20 minute little meals! It made me feel a bit too full for what I would aim for and probably went over with a spoon or two extra.

    I feel great!!

Surgery was June 24th, 209lb before, 203lbs day of, and 191lbs today. Since I am only 10 days out, my incisions are healing nicely. I am a little more advance on mushies, and have been tolarating all well. I just FEEL GREAT. It's been so long since i felt like my old self confidence was there. I have always been the "fun" one in a group, but today it was just....i don;t even know how to describe it....Kick Ass! I hope everyone will be able to feel that same euphoria. We are all unique, we are our own, stay true to yourself. Happy 4th everyobe

    size of meals

I can only eat about 1/4 cup of meat at a time. Then 10 min later I am dry heaving. But I can eat 1/2 cup of eggs, cottage cheese and yogurt. then I am still hungry 2 hours later. My binder says I should try and eat more protein. but I can only eat a small amount of meat for example, chicken, meat balls, meat loaf, salmon. the binder also says to eat very slowly, take 20 then if you are not still hungry eat more. Should I start that? Any suggestions could help. I am also sleeve 4.5 weeks ago.

    No Body Mentioned

I mean mines not horrible, I have a 1 year old I carry around and I nanny for a family with other children, so I'm constantly on the go, walking a lot. The only time it bothers me is at night, when I get in and out of bed, certain things I lift cause pain. I know they say no more than 10- 15 lbs, but my doc played me with my daughter, she's 22 lbs and he said since I've always lifted her it wouldn't cause any harm, but I lift the other children, just I use my left side instead of my right side where it's still tender. If you're in a lot of pain still I'm not sure that's too normal. I think a little tender is fine, but it. Shouldn't keep you from doing normal everyday things.
  22. I've looked through some other past posts, mostly 3-5+ years ago, and Googled to my fingers were numb, so I'm going to post this here and see if anyone has thoughts/suggestions. I'm just about 6-weeks post op, great weight loss, and was cruising right along until last Tuesday 9/7/21. I ended up in the ER for what I thought was a blood clot in my right leg. After a sonar, they assured me I had no clot, but I did have moderate cellulitis. The doctor put me on generic Bactrim 800 2x/day, and Cefalexin 500 x4/day, for 7 days. I have had cellulitis once before pre-op, in the opposite leg, and was on a much smaller treatment of antibiotics (just the Bactrim), and within 3 days (out of the 7 day treatment) it was practically gone! So, when this past Friday rolls around and my right leg isn't better at all I start to freak out b/c it's been 4 days of double the amount of antibiotics I've had for the same issue in the past, and when I put my sock on it still cause me to "yelp" in pain, not to mention the entire shin/left calf in hot and swollen. I call my PCP and he graciously humors me and puts me on the Oral Liquid version of Bactrim, for 10 days b/c I think the tablets aren't being absorbed. So, I've now had 6 doses of the Bactrim Liquid antibiotic, and I'm on my last day of Cefalexin, but really only feel like the leg is maybe, 10-15% better than it was a week ago? I will say that I do not have a fever, so I don't think I'm septic or anything, but it's getting in the way of my exercise and weight loss during the peak period of time when I should be working towards losing as much as possible. Should it still be this bad? Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions or things I should talk to my PCP or bariatric surgeon about? Do you think it will just take longer and I should hold my horses and take a chill pill? 😅 Thanks for your time and thoughts everyone. -Josh
  23. When I was 19 I had a breast reduction. And I loved my new size (full c). But then I had kids and gained weight and my breasts have grown up to a D (maybe even DD). One of the things I'm looking forward to about losing weight is hopefully getting my boobs back down to the size they were after my reduction 10 years ago. So, I'm wondering what the outcome has been for all of you ladies who have lost weight. How much did you weigh and what was your cup size before surgery? How quickly did your breasts start to shrink? And what weight and cup size are you now? Thanks in advance ladies! Oh, and for the guys that snuck in here to read the "Ladies Only" question about boobs (and we know you're in here ) .... shame on you.

I Have A Lot To Lose!

Today is my 10 month surgiversary. Ten months ago, I was in your shoes, nervous, not sure if I was making the right decision. I remember agonizing over the message boards trying to discern fact from fiction. I must have called my coordinator Louise Johnson like 20 times literally; and she picked up every time and kept me in a zen mindset. This is my experience...and I'll let my pics and videos speak for themselves. If you have made a decision to move forward with surgery; Dr Almanza saved my life, I'm forever grateful. So the big day arrived and I found myself at the San Diego Airport waiting to get picked up by the shuttle to take us to TJ.It was me and several Canadians. Everyone was anxious. One couple seemed to be especially charming and I become fond of them immediately, On the ride to Jerusalem Hospital we bonded over our hopes and dreams and goals post surgery. Before we knew it we were pulling into the strip mall where Jerusalem Hospital is located. I had mentally prepared myself having researched the message boards. There was security outside, and when we walked through the door, smiles and welcomes and registration. We were led upstairs and the waiting game began. I was the last to go in, being that I was the largest. It was awesome because I actually got to spend the day and well into the night getting to know Andres and Juan Betancourt. They were so amazing and real and down to earth. They answered all my questions and put me at complete ease. They made me feel at home immediately.I am so glad that I listened to my gut and followed through. They weighed me in at 381; I had lost 85 pounds since February on my clear liquid diet. (I can't stress enough how important it is to your recovery time that you follow through and do the preop diet. It makes the operation so much smoother for Dr Almanza.) If you follow the instructions pre surgery, you will be well prepared and the surgery will go like clockwork. When I woke from surgery I was in extreme stomach pain-I have a low pain tolerance threshold as it is. Just giving you the facts...straight talk...there is going to be some cramping. We were all up all night walking the halls...noone was feeling chatty, more catty than chatty if anything. The couple I'd met, mentioned they would be staying at the Hotel Tiquan in place of using the recovery house. A five star hotel for a night or sharing a small house with a bunch of cranks post surgery patients...yea...was not trying to be around anyone. I choose to go to the Tiquan:WHICH WAS AMAZING AND SWANK AND I WILL BE RETURNING FOR MY TUCK SOMETIME SOON!!! I would love to answer any questions that you or anyone else has. Please follow my links, check out my videos, contact me!! I know where your head is right now. You are taking back your life and making that first step on your journey to a new you. I cannot wait to see my family at the Jerusalem Hospital. My experience was amazing, and life changing. You will not be disappointed. To see my transformation video follow my link. I am also on facebook: www.facebook.com/J.starcatcher.F Here is the link to my transformation videos:
  25. Hello, I'm on day 4 of soft foods and just want to get some input, since some of you report very small stomach capacity. I know there is a bit of a learning curve here. For Breakfast the last couple days I have been having egg salad. 1 - 1/2 eggs (1 yoke) and 1 ts of light mayo. It makes about 3.5 ounces of egg salad. When I finish, I'm just starting to get the "Pressure" just under my ribcage that was described to me as full. for lunch and dinner I have been having about 2 ounces of lean hamburg meat, a little broccoli (maybe 4-5 small pieces) , and maybe a bite or two of re-fried Beans. There was one time where I had that constant pressure under my ribcage, it disapated after about 10-15 minutes when the food started moving. I just want to know from everybody whom as been through the mush stage what they think cause I really don't want to start any bad habits.. I am feeling hunger, but it's quickly gone as soon as I eat something. I am sticking to 3 small meals a day, no Snacks. When I drink fluids I can pretty much drink unrestricted.
