1 year+ post op sleeve stretch

OK...i want to stress that this is my personal experience only and do not advocate what I do/did to others. Do as I say, not as I do!!! lolololzzzz. I am 2+ years out and I can definitely eat much more than I could the first year (in terms of volume). BUT no where near what I could pack in pre-wls. Pre-wls I could easily eat 2-3 full plates at an AYCE resto (plus room for dessert!). Now a meal that is under my barf line is about 1 to 1.5 cups in volume (more if its salad greens, less if its dense protein or fluffy bread). I went through my logs to see if I ever went over 4000 cals. According to MyFitnessPal, i came close in June 2019 with 3896 calories. Though after looking through the list, it probably was well over 4000 cuz i notice I didn't log any alcohol that I KNOW I drank that day. Further, I did my logging after the fact as it was one of those morning-to-afternoon-to-night-to-the-next-morning backyard bbq parties. I was basically eating/grazing all day (and night) long. I also recall being sick a couple times in the evening. Now, I had just reached maintenance the month prior, and was concerned about my continued weight loss at the time so I figured, what the hell, I'm gonna go all out. It was not pleasant. Since then, I counted 9 times that went over 3000 cals in a single day (cheese, alcohol or dessert where the main contributors). But a normal day for me now is about 1800. My restriction is still alive and kicking, but I can definitely eat around it if I wanted to by grazing all day. In case you are interested, here is the log for that day (again, my alcohol consumption is glaringly missing from this log, so I would guess add another 800-1000 cals on top of this)
  2. Oh my! 3pm is late. I had to be at the hospital at7:30 am. After all the prep stuff, I went into surgery At about 10:15 am. So far all is good. The 5 laparoscopic holes don’t even have bandages. Feeling ok so far. Pain is mostly on the left side. Not much gas yet but I feel like liquids get stuck and it’s hard to feel them gong all the way down to my stomach. Ice chips and jello in very small amounts are good. Been walking 1000 steps when I get up. Hope everyone else of doing ok.
  3. Had my 6 month follow up today with the nutritionist, and surgeon (it will be 6 months tomorrow). They were both extremely happy with my success. I was told that I have done exceptionally well thus far, and to keep up the good work. I have lost 76 lbs., and 77% of my body fat!! All my labs came back good, except I am anemic, but have always been. So now I have to take the bariatric vitamins with 45 mg of iron. I was told to do was to add in some exercise, just light stuff with the tension bands. Only 15 minutes, 3 days a week, then slowly work my way up. I have fibro, so I have to be careful or I will be in too much pain to do anything at all. I am so happy! My journey is far from over, but I am well on my way to being a healthy, productive, active person. My only regret, if any, is that I wish I had this done 10 yrs. ago.

    Have any try this before

If you've been struggling with your fluid intake and don't have much energy and enjoy those and they give you energy when you're feeling fatigued then I'm glad they work for you. They wouldn't work for me though as my nutritionist only allows me a carb allotment of 60-80g a day and I stick to my zero powerade because it's like 2 carbs for the whole 28 oz so only 4 carbs for 56 oz. BodyArmor however is high in carbs with 10-18+ carbs for 16oz. I'd rather waste my carb allotment on something else. For reference what's worth it to me is something like my oatmeal I eat for breakfast is 25 carbs while the protein pancakes I occasionally have for breakfast are 26 carbs (with the sugar free syrup), the Hummus chips I like are 20 carbs (with ranch dip), while the crackers I like are 22 carbs, and my protein bars are 20 carbs. I try not to waste my daily allotment on drinks, but you're pretty early on so you need what energy you can get. Glad you found something that works for you.

    Esophageal dysmotility

Argh yes it sure is! I hope it hurries for you!! I’m 40 this year and hubby and I have been trying for almost 19 years. We have a couple of frozen embryos left so were hoping to go and use them when I’m able to. such a balancing act isn’t it!
  6. I'm 13 months post op so my memory is a bit foggy lol, but I think I was 10 days post op when I started taking my vitamins. And I started off taking Bariatric Complete berry flavored 3x a day which btw is DISGUSTING (tastes like berry flavored dog food) and then 3 Bariatric Complete calcium citrate chocolate flavored (which taste like a tootsie roll. I'm not fond of tootsie rolls so that was the only bag I bought). Over time my regiment changed with my vitamin needs and I've been on the same vitamin regiment now for 4 months and my 12 month labs were 100% normal levels in everything. I take 2 Celebrate non-iron multi's a day (grape flavor), 1 Bariatric Complete multi WITH iron (orange flavored) a day, 2 Celebrate calcium citrate a day (I have both cherry tart flavor and berries and cream flavor), 1 EZ Melt Vitamin A every OTHER day (strawberry flavored), and 2 COQ10 gummies (orange-peach flavored) every day. Sometimes you have to play around and find a vitamin that'll appeal to you because some of them are down right disgusting. I only dislike my iron one, but the orange flavor at least is bearable and is just like an overly strong orange flinstone vitamin taste wise... Anyway, don't stress too much about it, you'll find a vitamin regiment that works for you though it may take some time to find ones you actually like. Just hang in there.

    65 yr olds with bypass

I am 64 and am in the process of converting from a Lap Band (10-28-08) to a Bypass. The Lap Band was removed the middle of August, the Bypass has now been scheduled for March 9, 2021. Nervous and excited. I lost 160 pounds with the Lap Band, but then started to have issues. I had some fluid removed, but the Band still made it so I couldn't eat vegetables or fruit. Yes, I learned to eat around it! New chapter starts 3-9-21
  8. It sounds like you may have a stricture in your sleeve (makes it hour glass shaped) - did he mention anything like that, as that would show in the barium swallow test? The drugs that you are taking wouldn't help that as they are just to treat the acid overproduction (the pantoprazole and Dexilant) and the resulting insult to the tissue (the sucrafate). From what I have seen over the years (not an MD, just an interested bystander) the problems with the esophagus are likely a result of the stomach problem (assuming that it is a stricture - I have seen such things sited as a result of lap band damage resulting in such symptoms) Strictures of such severity (if indeed that is what it is) were more common several years ago when the sleeve was new and most US bariatric surgeons were just learning how to do them. The stomach, when sleeved, tends to like to bend or twist in the middle if you don't do it just right - it takes practice. These days, I see it discussed more commonly in countries, like Canada and Australia, that were slower to adopt the sleeve, so as a result, their surgeons, as a group, are at about the same place in the learning curve as the US surgeons were 6-10 years ago. Usually, it is treated by a bypass revision as the surgeon won't know how to repair it (if it can be done.) Often, it can be repaired, or resleeved, to correct the problem, But that needs a surgeon who is much more experienced with the sleeve, so if it is possible in your system to get a second opinion on it (particularly from someone more sleeve savvy) that would be the way to go, if for no other reason than to get concurrence with your surgeon's solution (or hopefully, an alternative approach.) Ideally, you would like to find someone who is experienced with the duodenal switch WLS, as that uses the sleeve as its' basis and those surgeons tend to be much more experienced with them than the average bariatric surgeon, but they tend to be few and far between. The only one that I know of in CA is Michel Gagner, who IIRC works out of Montreal. Likely, the RNY revision is the standard of care within the Canadian system (and much of the US as well,) for this type of problem/ Good luck,
  9. Except for 6 people in my family, every single person that has heard I am going to has WLS has told me not to do it, I'll regret it, suggested numerous other diets or exercises I should try instead. I'll be honest, I have had to live in this body for the past 10 years and I've been miserable in it, all these people telling me how it's a bad idea are the same ones that have commented on how I've gained weight. I have just come to the point where I chalk it down to ignorance, they do not understand my struggle and journey and they might be a little jealous. Only one of my friends has said to me, "If my insurance would cover it, I would definitely like to do it too!" Don't worry about what people say, you do what is right for you.

I'm sure we are all sharing the same view today!

I had my surgery on Friday 2/19. All went well, almost no pain but the gas is no joke! I've been home since Sunday and I'm doing good with my liquids. Last night I had a dream about candy and cake! So weird but I guess that's what I'm going to miss the most. I hope your pain subsides quickly and that you're able to go home soon.

    6 weeks po

what was your starting weight? I am 5 weeks out VSG. I lost 10 lbs during the 2 weeks before surgery and have lost an additional 21 lbs since surgery. I feel like I am on the right track but have had a few small stalls...??? maybe update your profile so others can see your information about starting weight, current weight, surgery type, etc. My surgeon told me I should be loosing around 0.5 lbs per day for the first 3 months. I think 29lbs is great!!!
  12. I'm 6 days post op. I started the full liquid diet today. Had a keto fudgsicle was okay'd by my surgeon. About 10 min after, I started to feel light headed, flushed and heart racing. Yep.. dumping syndrome hit. Guess that's out. I'm struggling not to eat reg food. I want corn chips and cheese. 35 years of over eating, and eating junk when ever I wanted.. hard to adjust too. Anyone flub up and eat solids on the full fluid post op diet? And what happened??

  15. Good afternoon! Had VSG December 2, 2019 - have since lost a total of 140 lbs. - with another 5lbs to goal weight - thankfully! In the last 5 months I’ve been experiencing ongoing back pain - especially when I’ve been on my feet a good amount throughout the day. I think my back doesn’t know how to adjust with all this weight loss? Have you noticed back pain since losing weight? If so, how are you finding relief?

    Kaiser SB

Yep, had surgery thru Kaiser Northern California clinic in December 2019.
  17. We also have to remember one manufacturer's size 10 is not the same as another manufacturer. No matter what size I have been and probably will be is always going to be a trial.... no more mail-order and returns. I only buy in the stores where I can try on first.
  18. It's been so long since I came here and I'm disappointed in myself for that, it's such a wonderful forum with amazing people.

But I'm back with exciting news: I had my surgery in August of 2019, and I met my goal of 180 by the fall of 2020! And even better: as of today I've far surpassed my initial goal and am now at 156lbs!

In hindsight, I made the goal of 180 never dreaming I would be able to go below that, and yet, in the back of my mind I always knew that somewhere in the 150s would be the absolute ideal for me, I just never thought that would be a possibility, even with this surgery. So this is a dream come true for me!

The mind is a very powerful machine, and I guess my mind clearly said "we're not done here" when I got to 180. I didn't even try to get below it, to be perfectly honest - it took no effort on my part, the weight just kept (keeps?) melting off of me.

That sounds like the worst kind of humblebrag, almost cringe-level - but I truly don't mean it that way. It's just that I'm just completely gobsmacked! I never in a million years expected this to happen!

More good news: I started exercising with a program I'm obsessed with called Essentrics last October - heck, I've only missed a handful of days since I started. I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be so excited about working out, that it would be the highlight of my day, even. But it is! I always haaaated exercise! But this program is downright enjoyable and I always feel something akin to euphoria at the end of my workouts. That's not an exaggeration. It's possible that doing this is why I kept losing weight, but I'm not sure, because it's not cardio-heavy at all...it's more like just stretching and moving your body, I guess kinda like a more "active" form of yoga, but NOT yoga, it's hard to describe honestly. Nothing fancy, it just really feels good for my body, I can't say enough about it. I can't imagine it burns that many calories since there is very little cardio involved, but I don't know because I don't do math and that's that lol.

But now I have a new goal, and it's a big one: get back to a nutritious, healthy diet (maintenance I mean, not active weight loss). I'm embarrassed to admit it, but I have to be brutally honest with myself, and this is the ideal place to do it - the fact is, my diet SUCKS. I haven't even tried to eat healthily for quite awhile now. I'm so ashamed of myself just typing that out, but I need to face it and admit it to myself before I can fix it.

I haven't participated on this forum for way too long, and that was a mistake. This forum is amazing and filled with such great people who always inspired me so much!

So now I'm back because, even though I'm at my goal, the fact is, this is a lifelong journey - it's not just the weight loss part, it's so much more than that. I need help getting my diet back on track. I need the inspiration and excellent advice I always found here. Just because I'm at goal doesn't mean I'm done - far from it.

So although I'm embarrassed that my diet (currently!) sucks, I can at least give myself credit for finally admitting it and setting my intention to change that. Being at goal weight does NOT mean I'm healthy. It's great that I'm exercising, but if I'm not giving my body the nutrition it needs, then I'm only hurting myself. If I took the giant step of having bariatric surgery, I owe it to myself to follow through with the WHY I did it - which was to become healthy again - and that is sooo much more than a number on the scale.

I'm ready to make the changes necessary to get myself into the healthiest state possible. I won't be perfect, nobody is, but it's time for me to truly commit to giving my body the healthy nutrition it deserves as best as I can. I don't know where to start though, it's like I need an entire education about it. But I'm ready and willing to learn.

I'm so happy to be back here because I know that inspiration is found everywhere here in this forum. :)

  19. I’ve lost 72lbs in just under 5 months. My weight loss has slowed but still losing about 10lbs a month. I’ve upped my exercise since the excess weight isn’t holding me back. I swim 3/4 times a week. Got back in the pool about two months ago after being out for 10 years. Starting to feel like myself again. Excited for you to experience the thrills of this journey!
  20. Getting sleeved on the 22nd of March in Melbourne and would love some Aussie buddies to chat to! Any other Australians here, either pre or post op? Please share your story with me I’ll go first: my name is Steph and I’m a junior doctor training to be a GP. I’ve always been slightly overweight but then I fell into a severe, deep, treatment resistant bout of depression. I was treated with antipsychotics which, along with the complete lack of physical activity from being hospitalised for a total of 10 months in 2 years caused me to stack on more than 30kg in a short amount of time. Fortunately my depression is now in remission, I’m back at work, and I have been dieting and exercising to keep healthy. Unfortunately that hasn’t resulted in much weight loss, probably because I’m still on quite a few meds. So I decided to try a VSG on the advice of my doctor. I researched for ages and spoke to a lot of people about it and eventually came to the decision that this was the right choice for my health. I’m now 4 weeks away from my surgery date and I’m so excited (and a little bit anxious)- can’t wait for it to be done! So let’s hear your stories, I’d love to get to know you all a bit...

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Congratulations to everyone on all your amazing progress!! Wow! You're all doing fantastic. I have lost 102 pounds since surgery and 124 overall, and I'm feel so good..I'm 268 now, and I hope I can get to onederland. I haven't been there since 1997! I weighed 263 when I got pregnant 10 years ago and I'm getting close to that! At my 6 month check up all my labs were good, but most importantly my liver enzymes were close to normal. This made me so happy. Having NASH was the biggest reason I chose this surgery and I really feel good to see that it is working! Sent from my Nokia 7.2 using BariatricPal mobile app
  22. p.S . you'll likely drop quite a bit the first month or two - but after that, it slows down quite a bit. Months 2-6 I lost about 10 lbs a month - after that, maybe 5-8 lbs a month. So it's not as quick as most people expect (esp if you've watched "My 600 lb Life" - those people lose fast because they start out way heavier than the average WLS patient). So whatever you lose beforehand you won't have to worry about after. I does get harder to lose the further out you get from surgery. So yea - lose some of it now if at all possible. Then it's G-O-N-E! P.P.S. the surgery seems to "reset" the set point. Mine seems to be about 158 these days because I have to really struggle to keep it under that My body seems to float up there if I stop paying attention for too long. Also, your comment about "starvation mode" and the surgery not working. "Starvation mode" is controversial - not everyone believes it happens. And the surgery WILL work as long as you stick to your eating plan and follow all the rules.
  23. you pretty much just wrote my story. i started at 373. That 70% is just an average. People fall on either side of that. Some people lose way less than that, some way more. lose all the weight you can before surgery. I started at 373. The morning I rolled into surgery, I weighed 316. My lowest weight was 138 (most of us gain 10-20 lbs after hitting our lowest weight - and I, of course, did too - but that's OK - I look better now at 150ish than I did at 138). So I lost 100% of my excess weight. anyway, not sure it matters if the 70% is from your starting weight or your surgery day weight, since that's just an average and you could lose more or less than that - or even a LOT more or less than that - depending on how committed you. I was VERY committed. I almost never went off my program until I hit maintenance. I never wanted to be overweight again.

Protein drinks after 6 months PO

I'm 7 months out and I still use protein shakes/powder. I get most of my protein from food, but I usually have half a scoop of protein powder or 2-3 ounces of ready-to-drink protein shake every day. Sometimes I mix it into food (like yogurt or protein oatmeal), but my favorite thing to do is mix it with Crio Bru (brewed cacao beans), some almond milk, and sugar-free flavored syrups for a flavored hot cocoa with 10 grams of protein. (A lot of people like to do the same thing with coffee, but I don't like coffee.)
