    PCOS (Poly Cycstic Ovarian Disease)

I was dx'ed with PCOS in 2000. I had all the typical symptoms (weight gain, cysts, acne, IR, infertility, hair, absent periods, and on and on) 13 months down the track, my 3000mg of Metformin is down to 500mg (I am comming of slowly, my insulin and sugars are perfect now) I am down to 77kg, from 135kg, I have perfectly clear skin (I get the odd sopt just before I get my period) and I have a 28 day cycle for the first time in my life! I still have some hair on my chin and arms, but there is far less than before. I hope that helps a little.

    PCOS (Poly Cycstic Ovarian Disease)

I had PCOS and after one surgery to remove cysts they came right back within several months. It ended killing my ovaries and so had to have hysterectomy. I am still suffering from the weight gain from the PCOS and was banded in 1/06

    Discouraged

....rarely mentioned in such circumstances, is the results of 'mostly empty colon' due to longish liquid intake, then the addition of several days or a week of even mushies. Our colon contents, depending on lots of variables, can easily account for several pounds seeming weight gain. Measure inches and changing body conformation. NSV will help focus on your real results. Congratulations and cheers on your journey.
  4. Hello everyone, I'm a newbie to this site. I’m having a Revision from RNY to RNY 08/15/16 making my current pouch of 8 oz (1 cup) to a 1.5 oz pouch. Due to enlarged stoma of 3.5 centimeters big. My surgeon told me that I may not lose as much weight as before. Because must people who had revision lose little to no weight, but the issues will be fix. I don’t understand how I will not loss weight with a new smaller pouch. As long, as I eat healthy, watch portion size, exercise, stay motivated and have a great support system. Which I do. Can someone offer their opinion or been through this situation their self? My pouch been 8 ounces for the last 9 years. 3 years ago I start gaining weight and I would look at what I was doing and notice I ate more and the weight came on. And all this is because of the enlarge stoma, malabsorption and weight gain.

    Up 5 Pounds?!?

Thanks, Shawn! 5 pounds of muscle, I wish! LOL! I meant to say that I'd stressed the weights so heavily that I was retaining water-weight to cushion those aching muscles. I have more obsession than umpph lately...I really want to eat what I want to eat, and then over train in the gym, which is my "quasi" trade off, with benefits  You're absolutely right, Wheetsin! But when that weight gain is staring you in the face, it's very hard to be rational. Sigh. Salsa, you crack me up...how funny! I used to do the drive thru, and haven't in so long. My weakness was the filet o fish and the hottest, greasiest fries available! And those 99 cent double cheeseburgers. Just typing it now makes me wanna choke! I think you are right also. 30 lbs. ago my rings were loosening. For a few days here, they wouldn't spin. Yep, t'was Water weight, and it went away by this morning! I did get a small fill, .1cc. I am leary at this high level, but wanted more help from the band as my willpower and choices were starting to slack. If restricted enough, my choices don't include 'bad' ones. Thanks to all for holding me up thru this rough spot!

    Weight Gain/Plateau

Just wondering if anyone out there my have the same problem as me. I was banded mid May this year and have lost 40 pounds. I have had no fills. I feel great not too hungry and was losing weight so last week at my doc visit she said no need to fill as I'm losing just fine. OK well this week...I GAINED 4 pounds!!! I have never cheated I exercise at Curves 5 days a week. I eat 1000 to 1200 calories a day and 100 grams of protein. I can't figure this out. Except to say I was on HCTZ (a water pill) to help with my blood pressure and on Monday the doc took me off it and I have put on a pound or do a day. I'm soo afraid the weight won't stop coming back and afraid I won't get back to losing. Anyone out there have any advice?

    Fear About Losing Too Much

Even if you lose under your personal goal, from what I have read of people 24-36 months post-op, there is sort of a "bounce-back" of weight gain--usually between 7-15 lbs. I don't mind being a little under goal because if it happens to me I will be right where I wanted to be in the first place. Being under goal by 13 lbs, I don't feel skinny; I feel slender. I'm 5'8". I stopped losing at 14 months post-op as I added in more food and higher-calorie Snacks. If you can't finish a snack, put it away for later. I often do. Also, I keep snacks in the car and my purse so that I can get in more calories when I am away from home without eating junk food.

    My Mum

My mum lost my dad 4 years ago and had been adapting to living alone and finding it very hard actually. She used to be very careful about her flood intake and was always watching her weight now she lives for food and has gradually been gaining weight. She's only 5'1 so even putting on the 30 or so pounds she's gained really shows and now she breathes really heavy going upstairs and her general health has declined. She's now 73 and has developed asthma and lately if she goes on any long walks she becomes bowel incontinent! I'm so worried about her. She's watched me lose weight and cut down my food intake since my surgery and now she jokes that she's picked up where I left off. She's now paying large health bills to have her incontinence investigated as its horrible for her but I wonder if her weight gain might have something to do with it? I'm also now paying to have her house cleaned as she's stopped doing it and with a little dog it needs to be done! It's so sad. I can't suggest this surgery to her she often says she lives for her meals now what a sad situation.

    Boobies...ugh

I hope my boobs get smaller post surgery. I'm only 16 days out, so too soon to tell. I always liked my A/B sized breasts but with weight gain they got up to a D size.

    This is me...

For my journal readers here is a bit more about me: I am 31 and the mother of two children - my daughter is 14 years old and my son is 10. I'm newly married *3rd and last time!* to a man who is 18 years my senior. I was first married at 16 - to my DD father - divorced by 19 and remarried at 22. That one didn't work after 7 years of marriage. I'm married again - more secure now, more mature, more sure of myself. The kids have had a hard time adjusting to the change... I have a day job and also own my own online company. (www.providerwatch.com and www.findadaycare.com) I enjoy living in Western Washington for the weather, the green, and the fact I can get in the car and drive somewhere. NOT like when I lived in Anchorage, Alaska! I write - poetry mostly. I love music - listening to it cause I don't have a musical bone in my body. I love to read - anything from fiction to interesting non fiction. I think I'm more serious than I should be.... From the thread "Why are you Fat?" My weight gain began about 9 years ago - it was a slow process that began with excessive drinking - high calorie drinks -depression...I gained about 30 pounds those first few years, lost some and have steadily increased reaching my all time high - currently 255. I quit drinking a year ago - eat more to replace it - and have worked at a desk job for 3 years. That combined with no physical activity. I ENJOY food, its emotional for me. When I cook and enjoy a good meal, it feels good deep down. But this good feeling is followed by guilt and remorse. When I feel full - I feel guilty. I think about being fat from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed at night and sometimes in my sleep. The bottom line is I overeat, food is emotional satisfaction, and I sit on my a$$ at work all day.

    Borderline in PA

I live fairly close to Monroeville. My Dr. didn't measure me during our consultation. My husband and I went together and sat in a room and discussed the procedure with the Dr. he did take my vitals and looked at pressed on my stomach. I never took off my clothes. I know that there were a lot of woman that wore weights and put weights in their pockets when I was attending my lifestyle classes. They were in a similiar position as you...right on the borderline of meeting the criteria for approval. The medical assistant will ask you to remove your shoes and socks but that's it. At one time someone suggested that you could put fishing weights in your bra as well. I would take those measures as well as drink a ton of Water before going into your appointment. My insurance did not allow any weight gain during the six month lifestyle phase...there were times when I wished I had done the weights...but I ended up being able to take off 5 pounds during the lifestyle classes. Good luck!

    SCARED OUT OF MY MIND!

It would not be normal if you weren't scared! It's a drastic measure, but I think we have all done the same thing, lose the weight, gain it back, gain back more, and the circle goes on. I have 1 more apt with my family doc and the administrator can apply to my insurance. I am excited and scared shitless, but know this time next year I will be a different person!
  13. Hello, I was sleeved on Sep.7th, 2013. I am 7 months post-op and have gone down from 232 pounds to 153 pounds that's 80pounds since surgery. This Sunday I found out I'm pregnant and eventho I'm excited I'm also very concerned since I can't eat enough for one person let alone another human being. I also have struggled with my water intake and protein. But anyways... I have questions for anyone who has been sleeved and been pregnant! can u share with me your experience, your struggles, the weight gain, the weight loss after birth, was it easy was it hard... etc... Thankyou!!!

    Backhanded Compliment from Husband?!

Thank you to all. I don't think I would have gotten so upset if he hadnt already said some rude things. Before surgery he said,"How on earth do you expect this to work? How are you going to keep the weight off? How did you gain so much to begin with?! If you're hungry all the time you're just going to gain it all back." When he met me I was about 30 pounds lighter than I am today. When we were dating he cheated on me several times with much older women. But I forgave him and we got married anyways. Ever since being diagnosed with Bipolar and having to be on all these meds with horrible weight gain side effects I gained a lot of weight. I've never been this big before. I'm proud of my weight loss and I know I will get back in shape. It just makes me so sad how cold he is. It's obvious he's not attracted to me. I guess I can't help but want to wow him and shock him with the new me. But another part feels like I shouldn't have to go to those lengths for him. He doesn't give a crap what I think about him.
  15. Mine returned between year one and two after surgery. Was great while it lasted. It's tougher now fighting cravings and hunger urges to keep the weight off, then during the whole initial losing period. I'm sure like everything relating to the body, each person's experience will be different. My advice is to really concentrate on solidifying your new healthly eating habits while you're losing. For me venturing off the path even a little resulted in weight gain. Gotta stick to the plan forever.
  16. All my life i struggled with my weight. My father made me feel like i was less of a person because of it. As i got older it is still stuck with me as to being a failure. i have tried every weight loss pill, diet and program there ever was. i finally lost weight down to 210 and was a nice size 14 for i am tall. i got married and pregnant and then my husband made me feel like i was nothing for 3 years because of my weight gain. when i got my band and starting losing weight, my self esteem came back and i stopped letting him treat me as if i had a problem with my weight when he was the one with the problem. He wouldn`t even take me places. so i vowed to lose weight and then leave him. if you can`t be with me on the journey down i don`t need you on my way up. but he`s probably smiling because i`m not loosing maybe gaining. I decided to get the band after 2 months of research and did it self pay. I was banded july 30th and have only lost 20 pounds. i suck. what is wrong with me. food has been my comfort for so long its hard to kick the habit. i am tired of sayin tomorrow and just want to do it. I always slip up and look back at bein a failure like my dad said and how my husband used to treat me. I need motivation and help. i read other threads and get upset and sometimes motivated because i need to know what will kick my drive off to success, why do i always feel the need to have something in my mouth. i stayed a size 14 for 8 years and once i got married the weight piled on. the band may not be for me. i have had two fills and yet i feel restriction sometimes but i can eat more then a half of cup. so is any one having the same problems. i also will start counting calories again tomorrow. i am challenging myself to weight lost of at least 25 to 30 pounds by christmas and i hope you all will join. i got the band to feel better about myself and i`m tired of cryin over spilled milk or maybe i was just meant to be fat. so any motivation, help or encouragement will do me good.:help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help::help:
  17. I agree with the warm fluids. I've never heard of Protein drinks causing weight gain and even by adding stuff like fruit may increase carbs, but seriously I've never heard of anyone gaining weight on straight Protein shakes. It is true your body is shock, but on a mere 300 calories a day, any humans body would be in shock and hang onto every little pound, nutrient, calorie that you're taking in. Eating with pain is not supposed to happen unless we overeat. I measured my portions and stopped before I ever had any pain. 300 calories is ridiculous, sorry I'm not trying to insult your medical team, but that's absurd. Oatmeal does swell up at least that is my experience, but it isn't like you can stretch out your stomach by having 1/4 cup of runny oatmeal or cream of wheat. I've never heard that our bodies will get energy from fat stores. We burn fat by building muscle, and calorie deficiency, but I know when I was on full liquids only (300-500 calories a day), I was beyond weak and needed to nap often. I wasn't walking much at all because I was restricted on activity, and if I walked more, I would have needed more calories. Your body needs fuel, good fats, calories, fluids and nutrients. I think guidelines are just that guidelines, and nothing should be set in stone once a patient is out of the danger zone of leaks and complications immediately post-op. Every person is different, every body works differently, and what works for 100 of their other patients might not work for 10 others.

    Is duodenal switch too drastic?

Hi I spoke with several surgeons prior to my duodenal surgery and two of them swayed away from the sleeve bc they said most people that do the sleeve end up eventually coming back to get the bypass surgery because the sleeve doesn’t last. If you cheat which most of us do from tune to time, stretches it out. Then you end up getting two surgeries first the sleeve then the bypass, spending double the $ and increasing your odds of going under twice. So that’s why the sleeve is just a waste of time because eventually it wears off and you end up wanting a procedure that will last. So at first I planned on doing the bypass but then I heard although not that many people promote the DS bc they don’t do it, it’s better than the sleeve because it lasts the longest and gives the most weight loss. And...it was modified so it’s not as bad with absorption as it once were. So your doctor may have also asked you questions to see the pattern of your weight gain. For me I could lose 90 but then it always came back with additional gain. At the rate I was going I was afraid I would continue to gain and I was. The surgery adds years to our lives and eliminates diabetes etc...so for me adding years to my life so I can be there for my kids mattered most. I had surgery on May 12th, 2021 two weeks ago and I’m already down 17 pounds with no excercise. I’m feeling better already. My starting weight was 289 and for years I was 145-150 but then it kept creeping higher after every diet...You can’t go from a bikini and running 4 miles a day to being that heavy without becoming super depressed. I knew if I didn’t just go for it before I had really bad health issues than I may never get the chance. My only regret is I didn’t do this earlier. I’m still recovering but I know the sacrifice was the only choice I had left. Get the switch but get it from a reputable highly rated doctor not one who just wants more $. My doctor in Orlando was very confident and told me he had done thousands of the modified DS all with success. His confidence was key. Then I prayed and out my trust into God and my surgery went great. Good luck

Help!!is My Timeline Normal? Banded 7/15/11

all great advice up above. You said you have a hard time getting in your protein. Just a little side note. You get more bang for buck with protein. Not only does your body need it but it takes twice as much calories to break down protein than it does carbs. I was a huge carbie before surgery so I understand how hard it can be to get in the protein. At Christmas all rules went out the window and I ate all kinds of carbs, especially See's Candy and my own peanut brittle. I can honestly say what a huge negative affect it had on my body. Not only from weight gain, but I was so tired it was crazy! So get your mind in the game again and start following the rules! You lost 36 pounds, you CAN lose the other 87!
  20. Jeff, I'm glad to hear that you're seeing another doc. There is an old-school mentality that thinks that anyone with a BMI over 50 needs a bypass. I truly believe that you can be successful with either surgery, but you need to find what works for you. Since this is "Lap Band Talk", you'll get more pro-band advice, but it comes from experience. I have no doubt that you could lose 200+ lbs with a band, but you will have to eat right and workout. The big negatives for you (from my point of view) are: 1. Much more difficult surgery 2. Malnutrition from the malabsorption aspect of the bypass 3. Permanence. The band can be removed or adjusted, if needed. The bypass is forever. Ask your doctor, how many of his bypass patients experience a weight gain several years after their loss. I don't know the stats, but this has happened to 2 of my friends. They both have regained about 50% of their original loss. I have another friend who has never had that problem and thinks her bypass is the best thing she ever did. Good luck on your decision. Cindy
  21. I have gone the last 2-3 years without a period. It was a blessing in making ways because they have always been debilitating for me. I was thinking I was starting pre-menopause. Here I am 4 post-op, at 30 lbs down and suddenly here it is again. I was just curious if anyone else's weight (gains or losses) affected them in the same or similar manner.

My PCP is having cold feet

@@Sleeve_Sistah85 OMG R U kidding me?? I can't get over any doctor saying such a thing like that to his patient discouraging/upsetting/hurtful to his patient/you - like he did don't think his comments had anything do to a possible "bad day" he was having the only comment i will make is "maybe" he was thinking like" if you've already had a 2 lb weight gain, you might not be true to the rules/sleeve" i'm sure that is not the case for you and you will follow all the rules necessary if he WAS concerned about the above - maybe he should have said something like "you really shouldn't gain weight now while you are on pre-op just starting thats not a good indication of things to come post op" it is true you SHOULD lose(or not gain) weight pre-op, but his words were unnecessary/mean/crazy show him you will comply with the rules - prove him wrong the above being said.............. i am the pot calling the kettle black do as i say not as i do i didn't have a pre-op required - had a food funeral for a "few days" i should have "forced" myself to do a pre-op diet, didn't chose to I weighed 4.3 lbs more the DOS than the first time i was weighed a month earlier ahhhh, confession is good for the soul good luck with surgery I KNOW you will follow the rules and be a success speedy recovery kathy
  23. I have a job which requires pretty extensive international travel, which partly contributed to my weight gain over the past 3 years (gained 40 pounds). Eating out on an expense account 3 meals a day for 15-17 days straight in countries where there is no such thing as skim milk or even artificial sweeteners on the table is challenging to say the least. Ths year alone, I was in Russia, Poland, Turkey and Indonesia (all pre-op) and am heading to Spain at the end of July, followed by the UK in september and France and Turkey again in October and possibly Greece or Malta in December! Now I am 4 weeks out, feeling good and obsessively tracking every calorie I eat which is way more managble with every meal prepared by me. I am stressed about eating out while traveling and I don't have that small of a capacity albeit much smaller than pre-op but I don't get full that easy (6-8 ounces of food is no problem). I do plan to pack Protein shakes and maybe some Protein Bars. I want to at least replace Breakfast and lunch and only eat dinner out. I should also mention I am a big foodie loving to experience fine dining and wine and always adored finding the most amazing restaurants when I travel and trying foods I have never had before. For anyone who travels abroad, how do you manage? Any other suggestions on food to pack?

    Just one change...

I'm glad to hear that someone besides me is on a dreaded plateau (although I'm not glad you're on one). I've been on one for over four months. I also began to tweek my diet, going back to a double protein shake for either breakfast or dinner. (If you whiz it up with some unsweetened frozen fruit and some fat free/sugar free instant pudding, it's not half bad.) I have been tracking every morsel of food. I'm now regularly under 900 to 1000 calories a day. Can't seem get it less than that. Less than that leaves me too hungry and I'm afraid I'll go crazy and eat something I shouldn't. My doctor and I have discussed it. The only thing left is to increase physical activity. An increase in aerobic activity can jump start metobolism. I'm trying, but I'm severely arthritic and have some restrictions. If I heat my knees before and ice them after, I can do some stationary bike work. The problem is finding the time. But I perserver. These weight plateaus are very discouraging, but I have learned that when you hit a plateau it is more important than ever not to overeat. Weight gain can occur rapidly on a plateau because metobolism has bottomed out. I'm actually encouraged by the fact that I have maintained my weight for all these months. Please let me know how you're doing. And if anyone else has hit this wall and has some suggestions, or just some encouragement, please let me know. Thanks.
  25. It was due to reflux and weight gain. I only lost about 30 lbs with the sleeve and I need to lose 100+ lbs. i wish I had done the bypass originally.
