    May 2023 surgeries

One week post op today, down 4kgs which is crazy. I'm not focused on protein during the liquid stage, just hydration. Next week it'll become a focus. I've tried adding protein powder to my broths and it's just not working. I don't need pain meds now, I haven't slept well the past 3 nights though needing to change positions. Hopefully as incisions continue to heal that stops. I ordered an instant pot at 50% off yesterday and can't wait for it to arrive so I can meal prep for the next 2 weeks. Ordered lots of containers too. I can't wait to eat again, don't care that it's pureed lol.

    Daily chronicles

    I can relate. I became a recluse the last few years of my life. Rarely left my home and found excuses to avoid any type of social events. Now, 6 weeks out from surgery, I have a new sense of hope. So I'm trying to change my mindset. Not sure if you exercise but doing so will help increase endorphins. The feel good chemicals in the brain. I made myself leave the house and walk outdoors in the sunshine today. First time in years.. Only a little over a mile around a lake at a local park. It was a first for my little Rat Terrier too. I think she loved it even more than I did. When done... tired but felt like a million bucks. I have a few edibles lying around too and my vape but saving those for a future rainy day;) Hope you get to feeling better soon!!! {{hugs}}

I'm freaking out to, imma start a week early just to get on track to shrink my liver before surgery so 3 weeks early ain't too bad
  4. Hi here is my story I had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy in 2014 with hiatal hernia repair with the intent to loose weight to boost my fertility as we had been trying to have a baby for almost 2 years. I found myself pregnant 3 months later. It was not my intention to get pregnant so soon after surgery but we were thrilled. I did end up loosing about 120 pounds over all. Here I am 9 years and 3 babies later However I got back up to 286lbs. I am 36 years old and we decided we are done having biological children so I wanted to try and start my weight loss journey again. Reached back out to my bariatric office, and they scheduled an EGD to check out my sleeve and investigate as I do have heart burn. They found I had some gastritis and a hiatal hernia. In addition the top part of my sleeve had expanded above my diaphragm. So on April 27, 2023 I had another hiatal hernia repair and partial gastrectomy. He said that had more efficient ways on fixing my hernia than they did 9 years ago and that the partial gastrectomy would be kind of tightening up my sleeve at the top that expanded. I am at 270lbs today so it is nice to see the scale go down but I find myself frustrated that the weight is definitely not coming off like it did the first time around. I know it takes time and that I am doing well but the scale just will not move from 269-272lbs over a week and I hate it and just wanted to vent. I'm currently doing puree and I'm trying to make sure I get in all of my water and protein. I am not overeating for sure. I don't feel hungry at all and I have to remind myself to eat. Well that's the gist of my story and I just wanted to put it out there and see if anyone can relate and maybe we can help encourage each other, thanks for reading.

    JUNE SURGERY BUDDIES

I just had my last dr visit. Getting cardiac clearance today bloodwork in three weeks. Dr office is applying to my ins for pre approval. I’m holding my breath. There’s no reason for them to decline it but they gave me a hassle about getting endoscopy and had to appeal three times for that. Crossing my fingers I’ll be able to keep june22 date
  6. I’ve just had my 3rd week weigh in and lost 2.6lbs but I’m ready and prepared for a stall to come at some time soon!
  7. Hello everyone! I thought I should share my story. I am 42 years old. I Was never really overweight when I was younger but in my early 30s weight started to creep on. To the point that I went from 125 lbs at 31 up to my highest of 245 lbs at 39 years old in 2020. When I got to that point I started trying everything to lose weight. But to no avail. Nothing seemed to work. In April 2022 I went to a seminar to learn about different weight loss surgeries. I then decided to do it. My first appointment with my surgeon I decided that the gastric sleeve would be best for me. My surgery date was 11/30/22. I had gotten down to 217 from 245 by then. Now six months later i am officially 100 total lbs lost! 72 since surgery. I am 145 today which puts me in a normal bmi range. I only need to lose 15 more to get to my goal! I am no longer diabetic, my A1C was 7.1 in October. Got it tested last week it is now 4.9! I no longer have high blood pressure and I feel great! If anyone reading this is considering surgery, don’t be scared to get it. It was the best decision I have ever made! Thank you for reading this! ❤️
  8. Good morning Bariatric Pal Community… I am writing this post to take a poll of sorts. A little background: I am 43 years old and 2.5 years post op; maintaining healthy eating and fitness habits. I am also training for my first Ironman Triathlon in September- how cool is that?!? Three years ago when I was 360 lbs, I never would have conceived the possibility of a triathlon. Anyway, the cool benefit of making all these positive changes is it has me thinking about different options professionally. I have a successful career currently but to be honest my heart just isn’t in it anymore. My real passion is health and fitness. Which brings me to this post… I am thinking about becoming a Fitness Coach/Life Coach geared towards the bariatric community. I would like feedback on the following questions: 1. In your journey, do you think having a coach would be helpful? 2. If so, would working with someone who has been in your shoes provide a credible perspective? 3. Would you be willing to engage with a coach virtually if in-person wasn’t an option? 4. What would you expect from a coach? Thanks in advance for your help!
  9. I did not have a stall at 3 weeks and honestly have not had one yet and I'm a few days away from 6 months. My weight loss has been slower compared to my group (the people I had surgery with on the same day, from same surgeon), but it has been a steady 8-10lbs per month and I'm good with that. I do have to say I travel about once a month and during those times I make the best out of the food choices (sometimes willingly don't lol), so my slower weight loss can be attributed to it too. Stalls are normal and part of the process, so I understand that one will hit eventually.

    Food funerals

You have been so successful in the preop, congratulations! I did not have a food funeral, I did eat out once due to a birthday but I only ate 1/3 of the meal. I do feel sometimes if you taste something you have not had in a while, you may get cravings so I just try to avoid the trigger food. You have been doing it for 6 months now, and although I think you may have missed some of the food, it was not strong enough to deter you of your goal. I would keep doing what you are doing and hit your personal goal. Also note that because of the amount of weight you have lost prior to the surgery, your first few weeks may be slower while you are recovering, so you would have a head start on your weight loss journey.
  11. I've read on here that being cold all the time can happen for some, but this early? I'm just over 2 weeks out, and I'm freezing all the time. I sleep in my winter slipper socks and a fleece shirt, and I'm still cold. Blankets on all day. Heat turned on in the car. Is this normal this early?

    2 1/2 Weeks Away

I completely understand how you're feeling right now, just a few weeks away from your surgery. It's been a long journey for you, with research, funding, and changing options along the way. It's natural to have doubts and worries when you see others experiencing complications or when logistical challenges arise. But it's wonderful that you found a new surgeon and that you're now scheduled for surgery. Even though there have been reschedules and unexpected hurdles, it's important to stay positive and focus on the fact that you're making progress towards your goal. I can imagine the mix of excitement and disbelief you're experiencing. It can be hard to fully believe that this life-changing surgery is about to happen. However, you've gone through all the necessary steps, received clearance from different tests, and had your psych consultation. These are all significant milestones that bring you closer to your surgery date. As you navigate the challenges of balancing college classes and family responsibilities, remember that you're stronger than you think. It's not uncommon for life to throw us curveballs, but you have the determination and resilience to overcome them. Try to embrace a positive mindset and visualize waking up from surgery with your sleeve. Visualizing your desired outcome can help you feel more confident and prepared for the journey ahead. Remember, you've come a long way, and this surgery is the next step towards a healthier and happier future. Stay focused on your goals, trust in your medical team, and believe in yourself. Soon enough, you'll wake up from surgery with your sleeve, ready to embark on a new chapter in your life.
  13. @Possum220 @Blessd1 hi new friends, I’ve spoken to my surgeon’s secretary and vented my frustrations. No reply! my appointment is tomorrow with my surgeon so I’m going to show him everything plus the fact I’ve lost nearly 5 stones in 13 weeks is too fast! I am providing him with my food diary and fluid diary for the last 4 weeks too. It does not make for happy reading BUT typically over the last 3-4 days I seem to be more comfortable. I’ve been to the toilet every day and opened my bowels properly. I’ve had nausea and tummy pain but not as severe so I’m out of bed today. I’ve managed to get on top of household duties and paperwork (mummy’s work is never done). my flu attack seems to have eased so I feel better. drinking is upto 1000ml per day. I can’t eat regularly and one small meal is all I can manage a day but it’s stated down and not caused agony. I really hope this is it, I’ve had an awful recovery and now things will run more smoothly. Fingers crossed 🥰🥰🥰🥰 how are you getting on? im desperate for some tasty recipes - know any flavoursome healthy recipes? X

Puking my guts out today :(

I couldn't have eaten steak at six weeks out - it would have been too hard on my stomach. I'd stick with softer foods for awhile longer. Maybe things like canned tuna, flaky fish or ground meats.

Puking my guts out today :(

Thanks for your reply, Arabesque. Funny thing is, I had the same exact meal yesterday with no ill effect. Started out as thick food sludge. Foamies happened towards the end, then I was fine. It just scared me how long it took to clear and be able to drink water again. Hours. And yes, I was cleared to eat fresh fruit and veggies including skins at 5-week follow-up with nutritionist but I'm going back to soft foods for a while after this fiasco. No reason to rush it. Thanks again.

    May 2023 surgeries

Hi Ladies, my surgery is May 22. My first doctors visit was only 2 months ago (March 23rd). I had no idea that it would be this quick. Ish just got real…now I’m nervous as heck! I went to my pre-surgical class today. I start my 1-week liquid diet tomorrow. 🙏🏽 😊

    S L O W Weight-loss 2 Months Out

Some people are slow losers & some are fast. Nothing wrong or right about how fast or slow you lose. You’ll find lots of stats about weight loss but they are just averages & will give you an idea of what you might experience not what you definitely will experience. But 21lbs in about 5 weeks isn’t slow. Excluding your initial 7lbs, you’re averaging about 3lbs a week. That’s about what I lost & my surgeon & dietician were happy with my progress. Don’t know what your starting weight was but were you expecting to lose 40 & 50lbs in your first month? That only happens for those who began at very high weights like on My 600lb Life. Oh & how fast or slow you lose doesn’t affect how much you lose. You’ll be fine. Just stick to your plan.
  18. I started my journey in December and I am less then 3 weeks until my surgery date. My program requires you to lose a certain percentage of body weight before surgery. My surgery goal was 21 pounds and so far I’ve been able to lose 43. Now I’m so close to surgery day and I have this overwhelming desire to eat all my favorite crappy foods one last time. Yes I know eventually down the road you can indulge from time to time. I realize that it’s not like I will never get to eat pizza ever again. I also really want to lose another 7 pounds to hit 50 before surgery. 50 pounds before surgery was a personal goal I had set for myself. I need a way to shut off the part of my brain that wants to eat all the junk in the next few weeks.
  19. On a regular diet now at 6 weeks post op and up to this point avoided getting sick. Today that changed. I had leftover grilled steak and a bit of baked sweet potato, plain. I stopped when I felt the restriction. Waited 30 minutes to sip water and the pain. Uhhh! Immediately threw up. Thought great.. got rid of it. Sipped again.. pain. Threw up. That's been going on for the past 6 hrs. It's almost like my pouch's stoma was blocked and the water just kept backing up so I continued to try drinking, hoping to bring up the obstruction. Finally water is going down so have to play catch up. Don't want to dehydrate. So is it possible to block the stoma with steak or potato skin or food in general? Will the food eventually just pass or has anyone here ever had to have food fished out before? I did eat slowly, took small bites and thoroughly chewed. Lesson learned though... just because I can eat it doesn't mean I should. I'm swearing off heavy meats for a long while... cuz that really sucked and was a bit scary. 🤢
  20. I started at 209 and weighed 201 the day of surgery. Today I am 8 weeks post, 5’3” and 183. So I’ve only lost 18lbs since surgery day (26 since I started). Like you, I feel like it’s going super slow. My body is sensitive to EVERYTHING. If I don’t poop on schedule, I stall. If I don’t drink enough water or get enough protein or get a cold, I stall. If I have artificial sweeteners, I stall. I suppose one good thing is that my skin has a chance to bounce back. I’ve not been to the gym, but I haven’t been sedentary either. Just have to keep at it and make sure I’m measuring everything. Hope to get to my first goal soon (170). Crossing fingers.
  21. My doc advised me to cut back on my B-12 to once a week. The problem is I have several bottles of the bariatric pal one a day multivitamins that have 1000 bit B-12 included. I will need to take a different multivitamin. Does anyone have any suggestions on any bariatric vitamins that don’t have the B-12 included? I appreciate your feedback! 🙂

    May 2023 surgeries

I was there last week. I almost cried. Find a tv show, take a walk, eat a popsicle..it will pass.
  23. I am just curious.... I had VSG on 03/09/2023. This is supposed to be the HONEYMOON PHASE! But I am turtle losing. Doing all the right things. Eating my calorie limit, hitting water and protein goals. I have lost 21lbs since 03/09, seven of those pounds was the first week after surgery. Anyone else a turtle loser too?
  24. I had my surgery 10/4/2022 and my surgeon is amazing! The whole team at the office is great and very helpful. Dr. Semeret Munie was my surgeon and now I mostly see the nurse practitioner, Kelly Columbus-Kline who is amazing as well. Dr. Munie made all the right calls when it came to my care and helping me select the right surgery for me. I was approved for gastric bypass until my pre-op day the week before I was scheduled. At that appointment we chose to change my procedure to gastric sleeve because my iron levels were so low she was afraid I may become infusion dependent on iron. I'm glad she didn't go ahead with the bypass and paid attention to my bloodwork so closely! The person I've had the most contact with through classes, appointments, and support groups is the dietician, Marsha Copley. She has been SO helpful and has helped me feel less guilty about being human regarding some of the choices I've made and has definitely steered me in the right direction with her guidance. I love them all so much. I didn't see any posts about Dr. Munie on here so I wanted to write one so that people can find this information about them.
  25. I am sure there are people who didn't but I feel like the majority of us did stall between weeks 2-5.
