Post Op Protein Shakes
armymom2012 replied to brlgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually still have problems drinking protein shakes if they are too thick and I was banded in January. So I have found that if I mix 1 scoop(Unjury Chocolate Splendor) in my large decaf coffee in the morning I have no problem drinking it, but right after surgery you will probably have trouble getting much down at first of anything, because of swelling and if they put a fill in at that time. Just make sure you get enough water to stay hydrated. Good luck. -
Am I blowing my chances???
climbthestairs replied to decamom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, Our stories are similar. I was sleeved about 6 weeks ago on 26 April and got very sick after and ended up back in the Emergency Room with pnuemonia. I have also had a slow recovery and have lost only 21 lbs since surgery. I am drinking 100 oz of Water and trying to get 100 g of Protein each day. I also swim 1 mile 4-5 days a week and I dont understand why the scale is not moving quicker. My doctor has said to keep calories below 600 and carbs under 40. Something I was not counting carbs/calories of until yesterday was the Vitamins and Calcium pills. I was surprised that each of them had 3 carbs each and I am taking several of them per day. So started yesterday counting those in my daily totals and will see if that makes a difference. Dont have any advice but I am in a similar situation as you. all the best!! -
The Bariatric store
Daisee68 replied to 1cutiejulie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@1cutiejulie - if you're referring to the BariatricPal Store, I have bought from them twice. I like quite a few of their products (especially the Protein Hot chocolate Amaretto flavor). Fast shipping. Sent from my HTC One M9 using the BariatricPal App -
Hi Randi, I had to go through a process very similar to yours where it included 6 months of nutritionist visits and 6 months of dieting done concurrently. I am just finishing up those 6 months now while I wait for my surgery date to roll around. You are probably going to have to have a lot of testing done between now and your surgery, in addition to the psych eval you have already had. I had to have an EKG, chest x-ray, bloodwork twice, walking pulmonary function test, and sleep study. Other people have had different testing including cardiologist and pulmonologist, etc. It all depends on your current health and the requirements of your surgeon and/or insurance. For me the diet was and continues to be the hardest. I'm bad about going to the doctor on my own but when someone tells me to I'm pretty good about it, so it's just been a minor hassle running all over town to different labs and docs. However, the diet requires willpower, which I sometimes lack. I have fallen off the wagon lots of times, but I try not to beat myself up about it - I've had a lifetime to develop the bad eating habits and it's going to take time to change them. I just pick myself up and climb right back on that wagon (no matter how much I want to kick it sometimes) and continue on. As you get closer to your surgery (like within the last couple of weeks) you might have to modify your diet. Some doctors require a liquid diet, some don't. You have probably already heard that getting your 70-90 grams of Protein in every day is very important - this will continue to be important after the surgery. Lots of people start trying their Protein shakes out early to see if they can find something they like. (I like unjury, myself.) There are many more people here than just me - this is just my experience so far and everyone's experience is different. I thought I'd share mine since we both have the 6 month lead time.

I Finally Got A Date!
Liberated Sleeve replied to D1NOnlySexyLady's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had a 2 week pre-op diet with 2 shakes a day and a small meal with 3 oz lean Protein and vegetables prepared with no extra fat - lost 13 lbs during that 2 weeks and my surgeon loved my liver! LOL - Congrats on your date!!! -
My Dr. Did Not give proteins until week 3 - I feel too tired
Jerzygurl replied to Albaleon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Btw.you know clear liquids also means things like Isopure and other Protein Drinks like Protein 10..which is clear liquid but loaded with protein. That will definitely get your energy level pack up. -
Nervous about 2 week pre-op liquid diet
Gundy posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My last experience with a liquid diet was the pre colonoscopy liquid diet. I’ll never forget projectile vomiting at 10pm. I understand that the pre-surgery liquid diet encourages protein, but it also lasts much longer. Any reassurance? A reality check? Thoughts??? -
Tastes Of Food? Better Or Worse?
luckypants replied to Borders3's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I am the same way! Used to love tuna, salmon, basically all fish now one little smell of it and I gag! Chicken will make me cringe but I force myself because it is so high in protein and you can do soo much with it! -
Am I sabotaging myself or is this normal?
GHallmon replied to GHallmon's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also able to drink and eat at the same time but I have been avoiding doing so. I have also been told that during this "stall" that I should eat more Protein, more often. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for the feedback. -
To Tell or Not To Tell?
Yaberhoo replied to ellie123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Due to my own screw up, I ended up having to tell my sisters. My mother, my bosses, and two friends are the only ones who know. I choose to keep this a secret. How have you lost weight? Strictly controlled low carb/high Protein eating. Not a lie. I've started/increased my exercise. Not a lie. I would advise you not to tell your mom until you are well on your way in weight loss and past a majority of any off days. She will have less to harp about if you are already down 60 or so pounds. Not being fully truthful sucks, but if that is going to prevent unsupportive behavior, bring it on. You need to be surrounded by support, not criticism. -
Liquid diet post op recipes? Or recipes in general?
DanaC84 replied to Alikiinz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Did your surgeon give you a list of items you could have at this stage? I’ve learned from being on here that our pre op and post op diets vary greatly from person to person. I was on clear liquids for one week post op which meant I couldn’t do shakes, only protein water. Sugar free drinks, thin broths with no chunks, sugar free popsicles and jello, decaf coffee. Then I was on Full Liquid for another week. -
I was banded 8 days ago and today is our wedding anniversary. I would really like to eat something besides broth or protein shake... Any suggestions??

I'm a YMCA member and have been for the past 10 years. The equipment is plentiful and in good shape. There are lots of program options as well as pretty convenient hours. The pool is a great benefit too. -
I was sleeved may 3rd. I can eat anything now but suggestion is protein first the veggies cooked or raw then fruit. I have lost 74lbs total 20 before my surgery. I'm loving the weight loss.!!!

Stuck and severely depressed. Need help.
meyouus posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi. I'm 3 1/2 months out. Lost 40 lbs before surgery and 30 lbs post-op (month and a half) then absolutely nothing. I've been 305 for two months almost. It's like my scale is stuck. Probably I am. I must be honest, I don't think I'm getting enough Protein in on some days, most of the time I'm spot on. I drink like a fish. Water, diet green tea, decaf (yes, I subtract that from my daily intake), Propel, herbal tea, decaf tea. Drinking is no problem. I eat a cup, cup and a half of a protein laden meal at meals, but I do not eat my recommended Snacks all the time. t's really hard to eat. My NUT said something about Grehlin and that my appetite will return. But I'm out 3 1/2 months, when will I start losing weight! Should I go back on liquids for a week? Or fast for three days? Or what? All you guys are losing massive amounts of weight, and I am literally stuck on 305. I feel like this surgery was a flop. I feel like a failure. I lost enough weight that my Pulmonologist took me off all forms of supplemental oxygen. THATS awesome! I'm trying to walk the halls at work without my Rollator, and I'm doing better. No where near normal, but better. I walk kinda funny. My coworkers know I had the rny, and are waiting for me to lose all sorts of weight, but I'm not. I'm embarrassed and ashamed. If I were gaining, I'd have something to look at, but I'm not. I have NO food sensitivities, no dumping. However, if I eat to fast or not chew enough, I throw up the stuck food. No diarrea. No constipation. TMI here: my bowel is always a light beige, if that means anything. Doc put me on an anti-gall stone med last month. Its supposed to be for 6 months. Help? I'm stuck and severely depressed. -

How much weight did you lose preop?
This Girl Is Losing It replied to wozzicat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I lost 26 pounds in 15 days of pre-op. I was on 3 daily Protein shakes only. Doc was impressed. The diet was tough, but totally worth it for safety and ease of surgery - as far as I'm concerned the weight loss is just a bonus. Got banded this morning. -
Having a hard time and worried
meggiep replied to Bryn Dawson's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think part of it is having no date, right? It is hard to keep your eye on the prize when that is the case. One thing that helps me is to have a reward goal. For me it is the cutest night shirt my husband bought me for my birthday last year- and it didn't fit me. It is the most awesome print- perfect for me! Whenever I falter I have that to hold up, maybe eve try on, and look at. What is the specific thing you have been told to do? Diet for six months? Lose a certain amount of weight? It seems like you are kind of up in the air and that has to be hard. Just remind yourself what your ultimate goal is- to have surgery that will be the ultimate aid in controlling your intake and helping you finally lose the weight. This is a hurdle you must do to get there. Man, I feel for you and the main thing I can do is send a hug your way. Obviously we all share many of your problems or we would not be resorting to something so extreme. ALso- try to eat plety of protein to keep you full longer- and also whenever you want to blow your diet go for a walk or exercise. -
lapbanding vs weight watchers
gigglypug replied to bmihigh's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Weight loss rates will all be around 1-2 lbs/week on the average, since your body is only able to burn so many calories a week. Initially, weight loss will be faster because your body burns glycogen instead of fat, which has lower energy density (it takes more grams glycogen to produce a given amount of energy than it would fat) and you lose a lot of Water in the process. Counting calories is crucial during the initial weeks/months of lap band until proper restriction is achieved. At that point, many people stop and rely on the band to do the work, others keep logging to keep overall control of their intake (most of us gained their weight by simply not paying attention). I usually log everything in Daily Plate, but dinners like yesterday's are impossible...two coworkers and I were at a Tapas restaurant and ordered 6 different small plates to share (if turned out too much food). All complex dishes with unknown ingredients and I had a bite of each....how to log? I've never done weight watchers, but from what I understand, the counting there never becomes optional. Lastly, there seem to be quite a few people who are afraid of being too tight (higher restriction levels often associated with long-term side effects) and intentionally or not stop before reaching the green zone. Some of them still have some restriction , but overall the weight loss is done by counting cals/carbs etc I say, do whatever works for you :-) -
Pre surgery weight loss tips needed
honk replied to new@52's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You need to speak with your doctors' office to know for sure what they want. The 12 pounds loss may be expected before any liquid diet. My experience was that I was told to loose 30 pounds before the surgery. In general my doctor did not require me to do a presurgery diet. My surgery ended up being postponed for other healther reasons but in the end I lost about 54 pounds presurgery. I can tell you what I did. First, if you are not on an exercise program start one. A mistake that over weight people often do is thinking that they have to start an intense program suddenly. If you can do 10 minutes the first couple days that's fine. Personally I swim; it burns lots of calories and your joints are'nt getting a lot of stress all of a sudden. You can even buy waterproof MP3 players which makes swimming way more fun. The first 7 months presurgery I ate a conservative diet and exercized daily. The month prior to surgery I went to 2 Protein drinks a day (made with milk, about 200 calories each); and one lean protein based meal. Remember the surgery is not the end game. Start now rethinking your eating and shopping habits. I think if I were to run into my doctor at the grocery store and was embarressed to have something in my cart then I should'nt buy it. -
Rowdee- The scale is moving down, that is what matters. I was banded 12/27 and right now I am focused on finishing healing and learning to live with this band. I have not had an adjustment yet. As far as protein goes, I have been told to target 60 grams per day. Water/Fluids, 64 ounces per day. I know what you are saying about the scale saying one thing and seeing something different in the mirror. But I have to keep in mind the the weight is spread all over my body, so the weightloss is just spreadout. Eventually we will see it, but we have looked at the same body for a long time. Be patient, do the right things and all will be well. ~eko

Graduated to soft food! What I had today..
The New Kel replied to The New Kel's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Today I tried out canned tuna mixed with a bit of low fat mayo. Wow was that good. Then for a snack I had a deli turkey slice with cheese wrapped in it. Went down very smooth without pain! I am actually close to 60 grams of protein today, its getting a lot easier to get the protein in now with food! -

*grumbles* i am NOT doing a very good job! BUT i think i figured out how to deal with the crushing STARVATION during the day... instead of having my one meal for dinner, i have it for lunch. then i have my second shake of the day for dinner. i did it today and it worked well. my hubby comes home kind of late, so we end up eating at 7-730pm which is far too late as it is. i'm actually up 2lbs!!! :embarassed: eating that late cannot be helping. :der:  so. breakfast: 8oz vanilla soy milk, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 6oz of coffee blended together lunch: veggie burger with one slice of 2% cheese, light mayo, ketsup and mustard, pickles and lettuce on a whole wheat bun, beef jerky (yes, again) dinner: 8oz chocolate soy milk, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
