  1. May I ask what worked and what didn't work out so well? Any luck with finding a surgeon for revision? Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App
  2. Parisshel, You mentioned: I just read a lapband blog where the blogger decided her weight loss wasn't "fast enough" so she was going to get a fill that would allow her to take in her calories by liquid only. I just shook my head and thought "that is not the goal here." That sentence right there is the NUMBER ONE reasons for Lap Band complications. MANY here are losing their weight just like this, and THEY THINK they are in the "Clear" now because their bands has not turned on them -- at the moment. They think it is NORMAL to not be able to eat solids, If I KNEW that I would not suffer consequences by tightening my band up to allow ONLY liquids -- I would do this too, but I am not stupid, I've BEEN THERE AND DONE THAT APPROACH and I've seen too many others harmed by this approach, many NEWBIES that are less than 5 years post op will argue -- WELL nothing has happen to me - YET.....sometimes it takes awhile before horrible damage sets in. My advice, the lap band does not discriminate, it will bite and it will bite in a nasty way if the band is tighten beyond the recommended level. Dr. O'Brien put that safety chart out, yellow, green and red zones, describing HOW THE BAND WORKS clearly and MANY still IGNORE IT...and think they can get away with keeping a too tight band and think, it only happens to others....and sadly some don't care, they will just misuse the band until the reflux and vomiting get so bad until it has to be removed in an urgent way and then they will just revise to something else.... And if they revise to another surgery type.....Sooner or later these people will have to "comply" with SOME weight loss surgery, whether it be Band, Sleeve, Bypass or DS...sooner or later they will have to comply and these other surgeries will cost them their life if they don't comply...
  3. Doctors in the South, Florida area are starting not to do the lap band procedures anymore. Their saying, its having too many erosions and revisions. Ugh!! Anyhow, I notice in other states within the US they no longer doing lapbands. Anyone else is knows of this too?
  4. History: I dealt with reflux before the band. When I was banded in 2007, the doc also corrected my hiatal hernia during the surgery. There were days I would experience reflux in the beginning, but I have to admit the worst days of reflux in the beginning were the result of poor food choices. Now with the band, five years later, the reflux has grown to be much worse. It is basically a daily event. Right now I have a complete unfill and I am taking omniprozole. Even with the omniprozole, I am still experiencing reflux...(it is so bad sometimes that my throat and ears hurt...). I have read some posts that if the reflux is bad before the sleeve, that after the sleeve it could actually get worse. My surgeon mentioned that during my revision surgery from the lap-band to VSG that she will correct my hiatal hernia (yep, I have it once again), which will correct the reflux. Have any of you dealt with something similar. If so, what was your experience after the revision to the Sleeve? It isn't too late for me to decide on a different procedure (like rny), my surgery is scheduled for September 17th... : 0 ) .

No more lap bands in my area?

This is very disheartening to hear. It is difficult for me to understand why a doctor would choose such an extreme form of surgery, over something reversible. Somehow, it doesn't seem that they have the patients LONG TERM best interest at heart. Yes, certainly they will lose weight. But what happens beyond that, with 1/4 of a stomach or a rerouted plumbing system? I don't see my doctor discontinuing lap band procedures, but he is very upfront about it being his least favorite surgery. Even still, he does dozens of them yearly. If I ever have issues with my band, or move to a place where I cannot get the necessary care, I would have it removed without a revision. As much as I agonized over which surgery to go with, now that I've lived with the band for 7 months, I would never agree to any of the other surgeries. Way to extreme for my taste, and the band is working perfectly fine. I'm annoyed with all of these doctors chasing the almighty buck, instead of having the long term health of their patients be the #1 priority. Granted, I don't see what they see on a day to day or year to year basis. But it seems so many of them really don't like the band......my doctor included.

No more lap bands in my area?

The decision on which procedure to undergo is a personal decision. I have lost and regained 50-100lbs several times during my adult life and initially was going to be banded. The decider for me was watching three neighbors who underwent the band experience severe complications. Two ultimately had their bands removed after band slippage, port infections, and erosion, and have undergone revision surgery. After recovering from a life threatening MRSA infection, I did not want to have anymore foreign bodies in me than the titanium I already have. I also don't believe anyone who did not have the band should be bashed as being misinformed or stupid. My surgeon and his partners no longer performs LapBands after removing more than they implant, and don't expect it to be around much longer. My brother in law underwent RnY six weeks earlier than, but there were issues with that procedure were too much for me. I am happy for anyone who has the band and is happy and successful with it. However, others should not be assailed for having a dissenting opinion. Since all three procedures have been joined into under one umbrella, no one should be accused of "trespassing". We all have our own experiences and opinions and should not be denigrated for it. For me the sleeve was the right procedure at the right time in my life. I am 9 months post op and 108lbs lighter with no worries about regain this time and only 32lbs left to goal. Good luck to us all since we all have the same common disease know as obesity and are doing our best to conquer it.
  7. Okay, to elaborate...I had issues from early on with my band being somewhat spastic...if I was stressed out, my allergies were flared up, I had PMS, ETC, it would be so tight I could only sip liquids for days...I kept very little fluid in my band to try to counter act this...but I did lose weight! Eventually, I got sick, sick to the point I couldn't tolerate fluids and was dehydrated had to have several liters of IV fluids and everything removed from my band...after that the band and I never hot along well. If they tried to put anything in my band at all I would have episode where I couldn't eat. I worked closely with my doc...whenever could find a good spot for me. About 2.5 years in I developed severe reflux, to the point I was waking up at night refluxing out my nose. Let me tell ya, that is hell. Then I got to where I was having issues drinking again. My band had slipped, my stomach was prolapsed up, I had to have urgent surgery to remove it. I had decided to revise to RNY but had so much damage my doc was unable to do the revision and I was sent home to heal (I had a partial erosion as well). Six months later I had my RNY and physically it's been so much easier. I feel fabulous and I can eat anything (apples, celery, chicken!!! Yay!!!). For me, RNY is the right choice.

    It is possible?

Medicare covered both my lapband and my sleeve revision without any of the things u mentioned. I just had to have a bmi of 40 or 35 with 1 comorbitity (mine was 40 with hypertension). Never had to jump thru insurance hoops. Had no pre op diet with my band and only 24 hrs of Clear liquids with my sleeve. Unless ur bmi is over 40, my dr doesn't require a pre op diet (unless u have a history of an enlarged liver).

    Surgery date scheduled 3/3

I had the band to sleeve revision too. My surgery was on feb 16. I had to do the preop diet for 2 weeks prior. I have lost a total 17 pounds since 2/2 . I started at 242 preop , 233 day of surgery and 224 as of today 2/25. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
  10. I had lap band done by Dr Ortiz in 2007. I went to him because of his reputation online. I felt his bedside manner was just so so. He was also very expensive. I just had a revision done with Dr Garcia last week. his price was great & he has an excellent & caring bedside manner. Stayed in a hospital for 2 nights & hotel for 3 nights. His nurses were also great. I felt no pain. In my opinion he Is one of the best in Tijiuana.
  11. Money is real tight for me so I want to get the least expensive revision of band to sleeve that I can SAFELY get. Who are the lowest price surgeons that you've used and had a great experience with? You can respond here or to my private email, whichever you prefer. Thank you all, Sara keenanbeagles@att.net

    60 years old

I am 57 and had sleeve last year. Revision to bypass this year. Plenty of people here your age and much older that have done well. Good luck!
  13. Ask me any questions....by far. My pick is dr. Kelly. Its been two weeks, and it was a amazing opportunity to have this surgeon and team for my band to sleeve revision. I could not be happier with omar, cece and dr kelly. Im down 20lbs in 14days, just icing on the cake
  14. Hi lulugirl, I too need to have a revision from lapband to sleeve and was considering Garcia. If you see this how did it go? Were there complications removing the band? Thanks for any help you may provide I am very nervous to get it removed.

    Bump In The Road.

I am going to be a self pay too, shouldn't that be no cost its a fault with the tube not yours. I was told if there were any revisions or leaks etc it was covered no extra costs. I am in Canada however so I wonder if that is a difference?? Fingers crossed for you
  18. So I got to meet my new surgeon yesterday. My employment has a special clause that says "all Bariatric surgeries will be done at..." So even though I was in a WONDERFUL program, if I want to be revised, I must switch. Not very happy about that since the follow up and guidance is really poor with my hospital vs the competitors hospital (btw, they carry the blue center of distinction from bcbs). Anyway, I refuse to stop defeated so forward we go. Plus the best news ever is that after surgery I can return to my program. I'm feeling special!! Fast forward, I met her and she is nice and supportive of my revision. I was worried that she would see my continued weight loss as a cure and the band would not need to be removed despite my severe reflux, slight dilatation, and now slipping (which is what I thought happened but could never prove!) and she doesn't want to wait for surgery. So EGD is scheduled and we meet again may 17th to see what insurance says (which I hope isn't a problem, I have looked at policy and it should go through but never know with them!) Then I get my date! It's been a long road but the light at the end is getting brighter!!! Just wanted to share with my friends here.
  19. Gerd, laparoscopic sleeve to laproscopic bypass. Hi all. I originally had my surgery in TJ, Mexico February 23,2013 starting weight was 255lbs. I lost weight till about September 23,2013 my weight was around 184-181lbs stable. I remained and Maintained that weight till September 2014. I lost about another 10lbs. The lowest I was around 170 or 169lbs. I know I had no restrictions eating what so ever. I had a sweet tooth and still do. I did have minor acid reflux prior to surgery but nothing enough for me to take medication for it. As soon as I had my sleeve done I was on omprezole 40 mg once a day. Till my gastronologist recommended I have a endoscopy done. Worst choice ever. Since I did my endoscopy February 2015 till today almost a year ago I take omprezole twice a day... Sometimes even three times. My symptoms have become worse. Long story short I have done upper GI about two weeks ago and it is confirmed I have severe gerd. My doctor which is here in LA.. Adviced to have a revision surgery to gastric bypass. That would cure my gerd 100%. Mind you after the sleeve I was vitamin b deficient and vitamin d. My vitamin D levels were very low now I'm at normal but still do take my dose of 50,000 units of vitamin d once a week. My vitamin b is well. Other then gerd that is still irritiaring me, my vitamin levels which are under control there are no other major issues. I'm extremely scared for a revision to a bypass. Even though the doctor told me the most I'll lose is another 20lbs, not to expect more weight loss. What if I don't loose or what if I loose to much. I'm scared what if I become malnourished. I already have hair loss for the past year tons of them. No idea.. What to do. I signed the surgery consents but no date yet. I should expect a date in end of February. I want to know if anyone has had a revision? I was 23 when I did my sleeve now I'm 26. On the positive side I am wondering if I will ever be satisfied with my weight. Hoping I'll be 130????????????. I have gained weight with the holidays etc no excuse but I am 178 lbs ????. Main issue is gerd. I have one person near and close mentioning my weight it's my boyfriend. He isn't good support he has no idea about my past journey and how far I've came. I don't know but sounds like I have some issues.

    The Decision: Gastric Plication

I am a 44 yo registered nurse who is a Director of Quality in a small hospital in NWO. I have researched all my options. Orginally I wanted the VSG but now I really feel that the gastric plication is the tool I need to increase my chance of losing weight and keeping it off. I like that it is revisable and is not associated with malabsorption . I made my decision after two years of lurking on weight loss sites and trying various diets, personal training and pills. I would lose 15 and gain 20. I have watched my ability to snorkel and walk on vacation turn into shortness of breath and fatigue. I walk up the stairs to beat of 132 pulse. This has improved with cardio at the gym (120's ) I have beat myself up. Refused to go out with my husbands friends because they are thin and I am embarassed for my husband. Really I have spent my time making other people happy and not myself necessarily. Weight loss will not make me beautiful ( It is what is inside that counts). It will not make me successful as I feel that I am succesful professionally regardless of my weight. Weight loss will increase my energy and my overall health. My fears are complications related to the surgery. I am having my consultation appointment by phone with Dr. Brad Watkins from Cincinnati Weight Loss on Sept 7, 2011. I am 5 ft 3 inches and 216.5 today. This is a 38.4 BMI . So far I dont have high blood pressure or diabetes. I dont want them either. I will keep you posted:)

    FabAFTER.jpg

Thank you all so much We are all beautiful and are goin to fight obesity together! My heighest weight was 288lbs my current weight is 180. I had the lapband revised to the gastric sleeve on June 25, 2012...No complications with the sleeve, always had complications with the band
  22. Revisions are notorious for not giving the same "bang" as the original surgery. It sounds like you are doing everything right, so use the tape measure every couple weeks and don't weigh as often, and just stay the course. As you get more energy, the gym will be your friend.

No weight loss weeks 5-9 post op

I also had a revision from Band to DS. I'm 8 week PostOp & I went to my followup appt & only lost 30#. I'm all excited cause I don't know when I've ever lost 30# in a year- let alone 8 weeks! My Dr said that it was good cause it's giving my body to react to the weight loss. I am loosing inches. Just keep up the water & protein!! Let your body heal & do it's thing! [emoji7]
  24. It's hard to believe but I got my band 4 years ago. I am down between 75-80 pounds overall. (Of course I want to lose those extra 10-20-25 lbs, but if I just stay where I am, I am ok too.) I love my band and can't imagaine life without it. In this time a lot of things have happened, as they always do. First, I had breast cancer, which came with chemo, a mastectomy, radiation, reconstruction etc. But through it all, I happily kept the band. I had only one hurdle with it though... after the mastectomy I had a wicked reaction to the anesthesia so after heaving for hours in the recovery room, the band was dislodged and I had to have a "revision." Unfortunately the next year I had another slip and another revision. I'm really quite careful now and am relieved that I am basically at the year mark and intact. I did have to have it loosened recently, then quickly gained 8 lbs, but am now back on the way down. It is distressing to regain but a relief to know that I can get back on track again, without too much damage done. So you can see life with a band is much like life itself, somewhat unpredictable and not a straight line of perfection. But the band is the tool that I feel has saved my life and self esteem. I am grateful for it every day. It gives me something that other people have, but I either don't have or lost along the way, an internal brake telling me that I'm full. It's that simple. People who know ask what I miss... not much. Bagels? I had enough for a lifetime, but sometimes I'll pick at the outer crust. Steak? I can live without it. Lobster? Oh well... nothing is really a big deal. I feel I can eat a little of almost anything... To those who are on the journey, good luck. Questions welcome, of course.
  25. Have you checked out the board here for band to sleeve revisions? LOTS of positive info on the process and the outcome. http://www.verticalsleevetalk.com/forum/13-band-to-gastric-sleeve-revisions/
