  1. I can not do it daily, or even weekly. If it doesn't go down enough it throws my day off. And Lord have mercy if it goes up. Right now, while single digits won't make or break me I'm weighing every 3-4 weeks...it's a guaranteed loss from the previous weight and I haven't stepped off the scale without a Cheshire sized grin on my face yet. Once I'm at goal I'll probably weigh weekly to make sure I'm staying within 5 pounds of it. It's interesting how even this part of the journey is individual for each of us, what works for one doesn't work for another. We all have to learn what motivates and what discourages us.

    OMG, Am i conservative?

That's understandable. Therefore, I found a similar outfit online to show you. The only difference between the pix and the actual outfit are, there was no bare midriff, the girl wore a tight fitting shirt under the white shirt. The skirt was black as well as the laced topped thigh highs. The girl wore her hair the same as in the pix.
  3. Thanks Mattr2, I just started the process and I am committed to having the procedure, I just need to get all the ducks in a row so to speak. Do you know or have heard of someone who has not had a positive experience? I just want to see if there is a common issue that can be prevented or avoided if possible. I thank you for your input and I do have a few questions if you wouldn't mind? How long was your pre-op diet? how difficult did you find the liver shrinking diet to adjust to? What kind of discomfort did you experience after your surgery? The reason I ask is I have arthritis in my spine and have been living with chronic pain for years, and just trying to plan for it. How long after the procedure were you able to return to work? What kind of weight loss have you experienced.? And finally, is there anything that you would have done differently knowing what you know now? Thanks once again for any insites you may be willing you share, Robb.

    Potatoes?

What happens to food after you eat it is extremely complicated (taking up most or all of a semester in a university biochemistry course). I'll try not to get too scientific here. I CAN tell you that the main way your body is powered is via aerobic respiration which, through a complicated process, takes glucose (sugar) and oxygen and turns them into energy (ATP), Water, and carbon dioxide (this is why we need to breathe in oxygen and breathe out CO2). Your body can take building blocks from any type of food and use it to make glucose (this happens in the liver), so in a way, the answer to your question is yes. However, unless you are on the Atkins diet or have not had a meal in a day or so, probably most of the glucose in your body comes from carbohydrates in your diet. Your body can take any carbohydrate and break it down more or less directly to glucose. Proteins and fats, on the other hand, must be broken down and then rebuilt into glucose (it is "easier" for your body to use carbs for energy). Plus, your body's cells are constantly growing and dividing and producing hormones, etc., and they need amino acids and fatty acids to do so. Thus the proteins and fats you eat are more likely to be broken down and used for these purposes. These are more or less the theories behind high-Protein, low-carb diets. When your body is carb-depleted, it is forced to use fat and protein for energy. This may cause you to lose weight, but is not the way your body is meant to work and thus can be dangerous. It can lead to a condition called ketosis (which can cause nausea, dehydration, headaches, light-headedness, irritability, bad breath, and kidney problems), and also causes loss of muscle mass. Plus, the high fat and cholesterol content and low-Fiber content of these diets can lead to heart and digestive problems. I know that is probably more than you wanted to know but it seems like most people, when asking questions such as this, would be wondering about the implications of different diets. so everything we eat eventually turns into sugar to fuel the body in one way or another....Look at what a potato can give you as far as nutrients and Vitamins...... My advice is to try everything and eat what suits your makeup and limit the carbs...as they are the ones that your body does not have to work hard at turning into glucose... I eat a little of everything I want....10 months out and 160 lbs. down I think it is working!!

    Help!

O dear i can only imagine how u must be feeling…at the loss of you're child…its the hardest thing any parent can go through…my sympathies…as for you're weight gain maybe a therapist would not mind doing a phone in and have a few sessions over the tele…i wish u all the best...
  6. Your doctor will want you to lose some weight before your surgery. Now would be a good time to explore the different ways to meet your dietary needs post surgery. Try different products, begin taking the supplements... You're going to find that once you recover from the actual procedure you still have the choice to eat garbage or healthy... just the quantities will be much less. After the first few months your weight loss will be based on your food choices and activity level. Instead of thinking of places to over-eat before surgery realize that after recovery you will most likely tolerate most foods in small quantities. Deprivation never has to be part of your journey. I still have some of my old favorites sometimes but instead enough to feed a small army I have a few bites and am satisfied. You'll most likely find this true for yourself. You're worth the effort :-)
  7. Hi guys, So I'm a newbie here, my surgery date is this Thursday 8/15 (God willing) and surgeon's nurse called me yesterday to advise me that I should be on the Clear liquids only and no longer on the slim fast/protein shake diet!!!!! Now I know most of this is all mental but I am gonna need a little bit more than willpower to pull this off. Due to the fact that I haven't loss much during the Protein shake phase of my protein diet (b/c I deviated from the program quite a bit) but I have been walking in the mornings when I can, so now I gotta put the pedal to the metal. Basically all my "menu" items consist of till Thursday are unsweetened tea, Jello, veg/chick/beef broth, SF popsicles and Gatorade. Can I get some suggestions on how I can make it through without falling off the plan??????

    Hello!

Hi kath, and welcome. You will find answers to most of your questions on our various forums. When you first get banded, you will be focused on healing, not losing weight. At first, you may feel like you have restriction, but that is just your tummy swelling from the surgery. Once that swelling goes down, you will mostly likely regain your hunger. Most people don't lose much during this phase, and many do gain. But, again, at this point, the focus is on healing. The band is designed to work with a proper fill. Once you are healed and start getting fills, you will find the restriction you are looking for and begin to start your weight loss then.
  9. Hey all-- I haven't been on or posted for a really long time. I fell off the band track, wasn't losing, wasn't working out and generally was embarrassed that I hadn't lost more etc. I came back here, started lurking, reading posts and finally band slapped my self. A few lessons i have learned in the past 1.5 years: Follow the rules Track your food Exersize Don't beat yourself up Talk to your doctor-they won't be mad-they are there to help Get fills if you are able to eat too much etc Talk to fellow bandsters When i sucked it up and went in for a fill it changed everything. I have restriction big time. AND-- my new band doc ran a ton of blood tests. Yeah-- my thryroid is totally JACKED. Along with the hypothyroidism I am severely anemic and vit D deficient. I started a regimen of prescriptions along with my fill and rededication to proper eating habits-- I feel AMAZING. I have also lost 10lbs in the past 3 weeks after no loss for the past 6-8 months or more. If you are losing slow, if you are discouraged, if you feel like crap--- Go to your doctor and figure out how to get it all on track. Don't be embarrassed-- it was a big step to get the band in the first place. If we can do that we can do anything! Just some thoughts...
  10. Thank you Kimmyv !!! I read your post it could have been written by me. I'm 2 years out and have become really lax on my eating and exercise. It's no wonder I've stalled my weight loss. I'm calling my drs office and getting an appointment to get myself back on track.. Thanks for the wakeup call....

    108 lbs

Jesus, that seems excessive! I'm 5 MONTHS out and only down 42 pounds. And while I know my loss has been slower than a lot of people's I haven't heard of anyone dropping over 100 pounds in 3 months.

    Thoughts to ponder

Doesn't a "real life" perspective on your loss make a huge difference...
  13. Okay, so I am 4.5 weeks out and after dropping 43 pounds (including the liquid diet) I am in the dreaded stall. It is evil, completely evil, and even though I know it is basic math (calories eaten-calories expended will eventually lead to weight loss) I can't help feeling frustrated. I have banned the scales, read all the stall posts, but need to vent. I upped my exercise this week, tried to up my food a little (600 calories). So please post encouragement and tips, dear fellow sleevers!

    Need advice/opinions

Hi RaiderRob, I’m in the exact same boat as you. I initially started this WLS journey planning to have the band. After lots of research decided that wasn’t the best route for me and then began looking into RNY, albeit hesitantly. I also felt so relieved when I heard about the sleeve and decided to go that route. My surgeon has performed a zillion RNY/lap-band operations, but only a few sleeves and that made me a little nervous. But now I’m looking at the big picture and taking in consideration that he’s a skilled/veteran surgeon and has had only had one leak and no deaths (morbid, but important!). Additionally, he has great reviews online and came highly recommended. He did mention that he’s performed this surgery many times for tumor removal, but is just beginning to for weight loss purposes. So that is also something to consider. Good luck on your WLS journey!

    Tummy Tuck questions

I've spoken to 3 surgeons regarding this already and pretty much was told the same thing by all 3. If you have rashes, infections, cysts, etc under the apron and have medical documented proof that you have been seeing your doctor regarding these issues then they can apply to OHIP with this information along with pictures and then OHIP decides whether to cover the panniculectomy portion or not. It can take up to 2 years to get approval and the surgeons I spoke to won't even bother going through the trouble of doing the OHIP forms for this anymore since they are approving only about 1% of the applications. The cost of a panniculectomy is about $1500 so if that's all you truly want then you might want to pay out of pocket for that instead of jumping through hoops. It's not as good a fix as a tummy tuck but it's much cheaper considering tummy tucks run from about $7500 up to over $10 000 and then if you want the full lower body lift which fixes the tummy, the sides and the back, it's over $15 000. Those that had their full tummy tucks covered after a huge weight loss years ago are extremely lucky since they stopped covering the full thing about 5 years ago. After paying $16 000 for the band, it would have been nice to have the tummy tuck covered but since it no longer is, it's off to pay I go.
  16. Thanks for everyone's comments on this post! Extremly helpful. I've been lurking on this board for a long time....reading and reading, I am in process for baratric surgery, which one I have not yet decided. I have type 2 diabetes and that is the main reason I want to loose weight. Many say the RNY is the best for diabetes, but I believe any weight loss and exercise will help knock it out! I start my 3 month weight management program required by my insurance in January(I was suppose to start last week, but had a scheduling conflict so moved it to january. I orginally wanted lapband, then switched to RNY (I also have GERD), but the closer it gets to making this a reality, the lapband is really what I want.Normally when I behave my GERD behaves too. I like that the band can be adjusted as needed. I like that it has little recovery time compared to the other choices, and I like that I can still be "normal" in the fact that I will be able to eat what everyone else is having but on a MUCH smaller scale. Anyone have GERD? Can you tell me about your experience with the band?

    Hello everyone..

I've had five fills since being banded in June. Finally, after my last fill last week, at 6.5 cc I'm getting the restriction I was expecting and now the weight loss is ridiculous! I've lost 5 lbs in 5 days! I do exercise vigorously 5-6 days a week for about an hour and I do eat 1100-1300 calories (22-26 WW points) a day. Everyone is different. Some need almost no fills, some need a lot. We are not all the same. Be patient and use this time to develop positive habits. Expect some plateaus and some weeks where you gain a little. When you go in for a fill, be honest with the Doctor about how much you are eating so he can judge how much saline to use. You'll get to that sweet spot eventually. I'm not sure yet, but I may be at mine. God Bless!

Bouncing weight loss for past week??

Everyone fluctuates regardless of whether they’re trying to lose weight or not. Hormonal fluctuations, fluid retention, what we eat or drink one day compared to another, pooping, not pooping, etc. If you were like me you didn’t weigh yourself often so probably weren’t all that aware of your usual fluctuation. My usual fluctuation is about 1kg (2.2lbs) so I never worry about that weight gain or loss. It’s odd the way your body reacts. I’ve discovered I always weigh more the day I break constipation that I did when I was constipated. Your weight loss will never be a consistently straight downward line. It will zig & zag, go up & down, drop quickly one day slowly the next. As long as your weight loss trend is going down you’re golden. And yes reduce how often you weigh yourself if you find the number on the scale is messing with you.

    Hello Vet's

Yes. Life is soooo different years out... I think it is hard to understand if you haven't lived this life for YEARS. I'm also happy to see the joy of newbies. I just think posting pictures of weight loss at 2 weeks out might be a little too much too soon, but that is just the bitch in me!
  23. How should I tell my children and grandchildren I'm having weight loss surgery, My oldest children know.

    How quick

my weight loss was mainly the diet I had to go on for my insurance to approve the surgery and the pre-op and post-op diet. I lost 9lbs the first week after surgery

    6 Weeks Out After Surgery

As you will see throughout this forum there are those that initially drop a lot of weight and then level out...There are some that seem slow and steady... And then there is everything in between! The fact that you are working out 30 minutes is real good AND losing slower or a normal amount of weight monthly is better for the skin, hair and gallbladder. I have lost only ten pounds three weeks out (so my loss is similar to yours), but I have lost a total 20 inches...so if you feel defeated by the scale try measuring yourself and you might be pleasantly surprised.
