  1. Dr thinks I shouldn't have any problems with approval It's a revision not putting in a band I just lost so much weight cause I waited too long to call dr
  2. So I'm now just over 3 weeks post op (revision of band to sleeve), in the first 9 days I lost 9 pounds, since then not a darn thing which is pretty frustrating so early on! So having read so much on this forum about "myfitnesspal" I have decided to give it a go and already I feel more in control. I like logging stuff, like my weight graph etc and I hoping that this might help me to focus a bit more on what exactly I'm eating. I haven't logged my food intake since my Slimming World days and it's much more high tech now! Can anyone give me a guide to what Protein, carbs etc I should be aiming for and is it possible to tailor the details on myfitnesspal to this? I have looked but can't find a way. I think I read about 60g protein and 50g carbs, does this sound about right. (I don't have a nut, they are pretty rare around here and my dr only gave me the most basic of info.) Onwards with my journey, I hope that this will end my early stall and get me on my way towards goal again. Just wanted to add that I find this site fascinating and the information & stories very helpful and have become quite addicted
  3. Wow! I'm not sure where to begin to comment on all of this. I think 1st of all I should say I had a banding done a year ago and i am about to have a revision to the bypass. I have had alot of complications. as far as bashing other types of surgery, the site i normally frequent does not do that. thinnertimes.com we are all very supportive and urge everyone to make an informed decision about what is best for them. most people that i know have researched enough to know if they can follow through with the diet of the band or not. because with the band if you are a compulsive eater you can drink milkshakes till the cows come home and with the bypass you are welcome to try but.... do it close to a hospital cause you are gonna get sick. with the bypass reversal ..it can and has been done, my surgeon has done them and they are very difficult and are prone to complications and are only done in extreme situations. Both surgeries have people that regain their weight! That is a fact and it is not just because of the type of surgery it is because people are addicted to food, afterall thats why we are or were over weight! It is a choice and while my experience with the band has left me bitter if asked i will tell it is their choice but i will be gald to tell of my experiences with it! With the pregnancy issue, there a lot of people who had children post operatively from bypass and all are doing fine. I have a friend that became pregnant 5 or 6 mos out and had a very healthy pregnancy. From the sites that I have researched (absa.org) and others the 25% statistic is actually a little low. A lot of people have to have the revision due to complications and the fact that if they had the will power to stop eating junk they wouldn't need surgery to start with. I have respect for the bandsters who are losing and doing good and I have respect for those trying to achieve weight loss. wls is a battle and it should not be argued amongst the ranks it should be argued on the field. If someone is putting your choice down that makes them the loser not you! You did what was best for you and your family. Who gives a crap about he said/she said we are adults fighting for our very lives. I don't need anyones approval but God, My Family, and the Insurance Co.! ( in that order ) Good Luck to you all and hope to have your prayers as I undergo this revision at the end of the year. Christy

    Lap band to gastric bypass

Hi all! I am glad I found this post. I was banded in April 2008 and did well for a very long time. I lost 160# and kept off about 140 of it over the last 11 years. But now, there are problems. I have been having intense chest pain, reflux, and lots of puking. I put off seeing my doc because I was fearful she would say the band would need to be removed. I finally met with the doc and she first unfilled the band, then scheduled an upper GI. Had that, and the tech noted that the barium was staying in my esophagus and the sphincter was not opening. Then, when it finally opened, that is when I had the chest pain. I followed back up with the doc and she said that I had a "lazy esophagus" that had been worn out from almost 12 years of banding and puking. She ordered and endoscopy, which I had last week. I have my follow up next week to talk about next steps. Since having the band unfilled, the reflux has gone and the chest pain happens much less frequently. However, I can eat anything now with no restriction.....and that has been a challenge. The doc said, before the endoscopy, that if the band has to be removed, she would not recommend a sleeve on top of a lazy esophagus...and the bypass would be my best option if I wanted a revision. It doesn't sound like refilling the band is going to be an option. So, I think I will have to decide to have bypass or have the band removed and try to live a "normal" life. I am having a lot of mixed emotions and nerves. Really, I won't know anything for sure until the follow up appointment next week....but I am preparing mentally for it. Curious if anyone else had similar symptoms/issues and had a revision to bypass? Or, and advice? Appreciate it!!

    Lap band to gastric bypass

For those that have had revisions from Lap Band to Gastric By-Pass, did your weight loss happen as you expected? What difficulties and advise would you share? My band was removed Dec 10, and the gastric by-pass is scheduled Feb 27. With my band I had already significantly reduced my portions, and eliminated many foods, like pasta, etc. I have been told that the life style changes required may easier due to my 14 years with a band. However, the weight loss may take longer.

    I'm torn..

You're referring to the DS (sleeve was originally the first part of the DS). Although there are people who do sleeve-to-bypass revisions, too.

    Trying To Decide

My sister loves her lap band. She got it in '02, so this summer will be 10 years. she lost her weight slow and steady, going from a size 28 to a size 7. She had to have a tummy tuck and has hanging skin on her arms and thighs and has not had a single issue with her band BUT has said numerous times that if the sleeve had been an option then she'd have had it. She'd have lost the weight faster and wouldn't have to live with that "stuck" feeling. plus she has seen so many others having scar tissue built up/revisions that it would have turned her to the sleeve.

I will be 64 in March

where do i start, When i got my gallbladder out in 1990 my surgeon told me to avoid all fried foods and fat as i may gain weight but I didn't listen and through the years gained up to 120kgs at work all the staff were being cruel and picking on my weight which had me look into weight-loss surgery so i had my first lap-band in 1999 and after three surgeries due to the lap band prolapsing three times i asked my surgeon to refer me to another surgeon who does permanent weight-loss surgery so in 2003 I underwent the DS with that i had major problems with malnutrition and i ended up having gastroparesis with it due to the surgeon severing my vagus nerve, I also ended up having a bowl prolapse due to the constant loose stool and involuntary muscles wanting to evacuate what was not there. i was having Iron infusions every three months and having to take D3 injections and other injections of Vitamins intramuscular due to malabsorption. I also had a bowl strangulation and obstruction due to two abdominal hernias and then finally had to have the surgery revised to the rny due to bile reflux and also due to the sleeve of the ds stretching into an hourglass due to a stricture in the center and the food not passing through due to the gastroparesis. and now with the RNY i'm having more problems my eyesight isn't great my thyroid within the last two months has declined due to the fact my body does not absorb the iodine from food the bile reflux has not resolved nor has the gastroparesis of which i was assured would resolve due to having the RNY surgery. not to mention the brain fog and tiredness that i experience on a daily bases. And here you were thinking that you were alone in your situation, I think that most people do not speak up when things go wrong because they don't want to be picked on and because their doctors make them feel like everything is either in their heads or that the problems that arise are their fault for not adhering to the guidelines etc. Hey I'm just glad i found someone else who isn't afraid to speak up about their complications, I hope that you get better soon and get some sort of normal life back. (we just don't realize that weightloss surgery has it's own complications down the line and that it doesn't rear its ugly head till many years down the road especially with malabsoption and malnutrition due to intestinal bypass)
  9. I am on June 12th and very excited I am a band to sleeve revision

    Band Getting Removed on 11/30

Hey Fab, I was very sorry to read your story. But I have to tell you that I am jealous that you're scheduled for revision and I'm not. I can't wait to get mine out and no telling when I'm going to be able to afford to have it done. There is a patient in my doc's office whom I've befriended who had the same symptoms that you have. She had a revision to a sleeve and she is one happy camper!! I hope that everything goes well for you and this is the answer to your problems.

    Band Getting Removed on 11/30

How interesting...my surgeon is Dr. Garth Davis! I am sorry to hear that you are having a similar experience. I only received one fill, and from the moment I got that fill, the hell started. My surgery was June 12, and with the exception of vomiting that kept me in the hospital overnight, I was fine. The first month was great--I lost steadily and had no problems with eating. I started having problems keeping food down soon after my fill in July, which caused them to remove 2 of the 3 CCs they put in. I continued to get worse, so in September, they completely unfilled me. You would think that I would be able to eat, but instead, I developed severe reflux and vomiting. Most days, if I can get a half-cup of Soup down without vomiting, that's an achievement. Dr. Garth wanted to put me in the hospital Thanksgiving Day, but I held him off by going on all Protein shakes until my scope procedure on Tuesday. He suspects that I am suffering from "band intolerance"--apparently my body isn't liking this band at all. He wants to revise to RNY, but that scares the crap outta me! I keep trying to tell myself that this isn't my fault, but it's really hard to accept that the one method that has actually worked in my weight loss battle may be making me very sick. I appreciate the feedback everyone, and I'm glad to know that I'm not alone, particularly in my saga with the Davis Clinic.
  12. I'm surprised that the choices and needs of some would surprise others. I never hit 40bmi at my top weight, but had other issues. Going through the process I lost quite a bit of weight, and when I had the band done my preop weight was 189. The band have me all kinds of issues, and after fighting with it for a year I decided to revise to sleeve with a preop weight of 190. Mind you I was down to 165 with the band before it slipped, but it was shown that without restriction I did not maintain weight loss so insurance approved it, plus I needed to have the band removed due to the slip anyway. We are all supposed to be here for support, not to be judged. I'm sure that was your intention in this thread, but sometimes I see topics that are very judgemental and thoughtless of others, and I do not think that this is the place for that.
  13. I haven't activated my google account...so it won't let me update. I didn't update in June - 224. July - 224. After port revision, thus delayed fills, in June I had a small setback. Two months of no losing is discouraging, but the scales are moving again. I hope to post a good loss next month. I think I've found my sweet spot. Can someone update me please? The Avengers Thread had been slow lately. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and losing.

    Lap band to gastric bypass

I was banded in 2005 and suffered many of the same issues. My revision will be in two steps. My band was removed about 3 weeks ago, my gastric bypass is scheduled for Feb 27. The band removal went very well. My post surgery pain was primarily in my shoulder from the CO2 used in laparoscopic surgery. All was manageable with Tylenol. All the best on your journey.
  15. I'm 5 weeks post op from getting port revised. I get massive iching and spasms at port and incisions, but, is getting better day at a time. I notice that when I exercise I tend to get the spasms. Ice helps. I also notice that the itching gets really bad with gas in the belly. GaxX or mylanta helps with this. It gets extremely frustrating. Hang in there. Jake
  16. Cleo, I understand, it was really hard for me to decide to do the revision from band to sleeve. I am also a self-pay. I had to rob my 401K to pay for it. I thought about it for months and then researched it and followed all the blogs for a few more months. All the while trying to lose weight but only gaining more. I was miserable. It really came to the bottom-line that there was no way I could lose the weight myself and as I aged being obese was causing more health problems. I know my husband was ready to retire and we wouldn't be able to travel or do fun things, and he was concerned he'd have to take care of me for years to come. It is elective surgery but at my age, I really feel I had no choice but to do it. I was scared to do it but even more scared not to. But so far so good. No complications with the sleeve. A few rough days but at 4 weeks out, I'm glad I did it. There is no way I could do this myself. I'm committed to do this. I have to. I don't really have any words of encouragement but at our age I think we have some wisdom to know we only have one more chance to get this right and be healthy. We know the dangers of being obese and watching our joints fail. We are more aware of the lies we can tell ourselves about having just one bite of something sweet. I could still ride a bike at 260 lbs but it was getting harder and harder. I could see me in a wheel chair before I reached 70 along with hip and/or knee replacements and diabetes. The future was looking pretty grim. I'm glad I decided to get the revision to a sleeve. I know there is still a lot of hard work ahead of me. For the rest of my life I'll have to watch what I eat. I have to make serious life style changes. (just read the blogs of people with any WLS who gained back all the weight, it can happen) I have to do this or my final years on this planet will be miserable.

    Newly banded

@@jhayden1 Had a successful band for 7 years, and just recently revised to a sleeve (preventive more than necessary) but yes, unfortunately I remember those days before the first fill. Some people had restriction with just the band alone, unfortunately, I was not one of them lol. You'll also be having quite a bit of false hunger sensations and that's from the inside healing and/or acid. Congratz and am excited for you. I loved my band
  18. Yes, my revision was done all in one surgery. My surgeon said it was the most common surgery she does. @@giugiu37 my insurance paid for the revision because when my band slipped I regained most of the weight I had lost, so I had to get it out either way and the weight gain showed that I would not be successful without restriction.
  19. I'm so happy to have has my revision from band to sleeve. So much better. Just had my 4-month (almost) post-op appt. SW - 222 CW - 176 46 Lbs s GONE!! Praise God!!!
  20. We're submitting to insurance either today or tomorrow! The coordinator thought we'd have a better chance of approval if it was submitted as an original surgery (different insurance company than my first band and rebanding) than as a revision, so I had to jump through a few hoops (slightly fast-tracked). Hopefully, will hear back relatively quickly!
  21. I never seriously considered the RNY because it doesn't really do anything performancewise that the sleeve doesn't do but has a lot more downsides. If I felt that I needed something stronger (I had about 100lb to lose and had good weight stability), then I would have gone with the DS, as unlike the RNY, its continues malabsorbing calories for the long term while the RNY only continues malabsorbing minerals, so the DS does demonstrate better regain resistance than the RNY or sleeve. My wife is almost seven years out on a DS and is doing well, down over 200lb with good weight stability (which she never had before.) A word on the prospect of using the DS as a backup for the sleeve - by my surgeon's experience, this works best if one makes the decision to revise (or complete the DS, as some would say) early rather than waiting for most or all of ones weight to regain - the results of waiting rarely work out as well as a virgin DS. This makes for a tough decision - after all, who is going to pull the trigger to revise if they have only regained 10lb, and they probably aren't heavy enough yet to get insurance coverage? I felt that my weight was stable enough thru well established my diet/exercise habits that this was worth the risk of just doing the sleeve. Time will tell if that was the right decision.

    WELCOME Gym Rats!!!

Hi everyone! I am having my revision from band to VSG on 6/17 and I am stressing about the downtime from the gym afterward. My doctor told me that I could walk immediately, but hold off on aerobics until 3 weeks and weights 4 weeks. Abs will have to wait for 6-8 weeks depending on how I heal. My normal routine is 4-5 days at the gym for 1 to 2 hours each time. I generally do classes such as spin, cardio blast, step & sculpting. I am excited that I found this group!

Anyone else having surgery in December?

revision from lapband to bypass for dec 9th. I'm excited about to start my 2 week pre op

Anyone else having surgery in December?

Hello my Dec pals. I just got home from the revision. It wasn't bad but the gas was/is unreal. It's like carrying knives inside me juggling around. They took out drain, almost fainted, horrible feeling unraveling out of my belly. I continue to pray 4 the rest of you and upcoming and those of us who's done. Glad it's over:)
  25. I don't think I've ever heard of a bypass to sleeve revision. I do hear of the other way around (sleeve to bypass), but that's usually because of problems with GERD. And yes - I've heard of bypass to DS, but like the poster above said, it's a very complicated surgery that very few surgeons are trained/qualified to do.
