    Medication absorbtion

I had a long convo with my surgeon and I am really not any more informed. I specifically asked about this, for reasons of birth control! He says medications absorb while traveling through the small intestine so they absorb normal. BUT then he prescribes Ursoldol (or how ever it is spelled) to help prevent gall bladder problems during weight loss and when I got home and read the visit notes and instructions it specifically said to "take Ursodol by itself to insure proper absorption" So I asked, and he said it is more of taking a bunch of meds together that may cause you not to absorb all of each actual medicine. I don't really know, I take it alone most of the time as he stated.. but I am SO PARANOID about this with the birth control. I have no desire for kids... I have had custody of my nieces and nephew and all it did was validate my feelings of not wanting kids. Don't get me wrong I love them to death, but I love to send them home too. haha I ranted and probably didn't help, sorry.
  2. I was 48 when I had my surgery 2 years ago (July 23rd), and my BMI was 69.9. I have lost 205 pounds, and I'm still losing VERY slowly. My BMI is 33 now. Of course I'd like to get to a normal BMI, but I am pretty comfortable and happy where I am now. I am hoping to lose about 20 more, but since it's going so slow now I am not sure if I will. Anyway, I turn 51 next month and I couldn't be happier with my weight loss. I feel like a teenager again! Sent from my Pixel 5a using BariatricPal mobile app

    Stop loosing WAY too early

People talk about stalls, the famous week 3 stall, then the 3 week stall. I actually am one of the few people that never saw a stall. My secret was being too large to weigh on home scales. For about the first year I could only weigh at my surgeon's office at monthly follow-ups. So, when your weigh-ins are a month apart, you don't see stalls. I can't express what a joy this was. I was never tempted to change anything in response to a stall. I just stayed with my program. My surgeon was never overly concerned with my weight loss. He asked how I was doing on the plan, how I felt, did I have any concerns. Weight never came up unless I brought it up. He was a cool Doc. Once I was able to weigh at home, I did it for a couple weeks, several times a day. Then I abandoned the whole concept and went back to just weighing at follow-ups. Who needs the angst? Even now, all these years later, I don't weigh at home, but only at my annual physicals at the Doctor's. One does not need a scale for success at WLS. Just trust your plan. My plan was also pretty straightforward. I didn't count calories, nor much of anything else. I counted meals of which there were 3 per day. I counted protein of where there were 3-4 oz each meal. That was basically my plan. That is still basically my plan. Good luck, Tek
  4. Anyone who is over 40 and has a BMI over 50? Looking for someone in similar circumstances to me, so I can get an idea of what to expect in terms of weight loss. Even better if you have a success story!! Starting to feel real nervous over here, surgery date is approaching so fast ...

    July 2022 peeps!

Good for you, sticking to it!! So hard, especially without the positive feedback of quick weight loss post-surgery. I agree that having a partner eat outside the home is super important. When I was doing a liquid-only diet (kinda like optifast but a different brand through my Dr office), I was shocked how some friends and boyfriends would intentionally sabotage me by eating around me when they didn't absolutely have to. If you're starving, fine, I get it; but if it's just boredom eating or whatever, take it elsewhere!

    Pre op

Congratulations on the loss and your surgery date. Just don’t be surprised if you don’t lose as much as others do on the pre op diet because you have already started to lose that initial water weight which is awesome. Anything you lose now just makes it that much easier later. Keep it up.
  7. I doubt your team will berate you and if so I would consider a new team. (If possible) The entire reason you are there is because of the struggle. I believe every teams (surgeons) requirements are different. Mine had a "final" weight check it was the last time you were weighed before surgery would be scheduled. At that point in time you had to be close to where you started but some gain or loss was acceptable. BUT at that point up until your surgery day you could NOT gain weight. If you gained weight, your surgery would be rescheduled. My pre-op diet was technically 10 days but I did it for 14 days because I didn't want to start it over a weekend. I thought it would be easier while I was occupied at work. I was correct, by time the weekend came I was ok and got thru it pretty easily. I am sure it also has to do with what your pre-op diet allows. Mine was 4 protein shakes a day plus you were given a list of foods that you could eat up to 6 servings of each day. The ability to actually eat and chew made it easier for me. You will be fine, just put on your big kid pants and get determined! You can do anything with determination. Good luck!
  8. It’s been 3 weeks since my ESG procedure. I was concerned about the 4th of July but I got Covid. So, I’ve been isolated upstairs 🥺. But all is good. Felt bad for about 2 days, now getting better Everything is going well my procedure. No issues getting water, tea or coffee in. I’m typically over 120oz a day. Protein is primarily from supplements iso pure and Core / Fairlife. I’m sure missing the standard Fairlife Protein shakes. The 30gr of protein per bottle. I can’t find any at Sam’s or Costco. I’m now ordering on Amazon at nearly twice the cost. Although a lot cheaper compared to eating out lol. Anyone else having a difficult time finding it? Let me know of any locations. My weight loss has been going well. Pre Surgery weight 336 Surgery weight 331 Current Weight 307 My goal weight is 270-275. Same as my college football weight. I’m not hungry but when I smell food, I would love to grab a bite. This week I start soft foods. I’m sure my weight loss will stall a bite as I’m sure most was still water. Good luck everyone If you’re looking into ESG, this is still a relatively new procedure. So far, I would fully recommend it. The procedure was quick. I left my hotel at 6am and was back in my hotel room by 930am. No cutting! Only feeling gas pains. Some nausea but not bad. The first few days I was hungry. Since I was tolerating everything, the doctor increased my protein to 120g. Mind you, I’m 6’7 at the time 330. Procedure was on Wednesday, flew home Friday and flying for work on Sunday.

    OOTD

This is a skirt not a dress. Let the giggles begin. Yep, the challenge of being short. I know a few of you will understand. A ribbed wool tube skirt at 50% off I was not giving up so when the desire is strong a creative solution must be found. 😁 Congrats on your weight loss so far @Mariann812. Whoo hoo! Looking forward to seeing more of your pxts.

    Portion sizes

Don’t worry, a lot of us felt that way some time even with support people about. You’re really learning how to eat all over again in many ways. The other challenge is discovering what works for you. You could do exactly the same as someone else but you struggle simply because you are not exactly the same psychologically or physiologically. Take our ideas & experiences as somewhere to start. Maybe try to find a nutritionalist close by who has experience with bariatric weight loss. Someone on here may even be able to refer someone. Also some bariatric clinics put their plans etc. on line so you could refer to them for additional ideas. Glad you’re giving soup another try. You may find that with other foods too. You easily ate it yesterday but today it’s no way. Then three days later it’s fine again.

    June 2022 surgery buddies

Two weeks post op-today. Lost 39lbs since I started pre-op liquid. 14 pounds since surgery. TBH, my post-surgery weight loss is a little slower than expected, but that's probably because of the 25 I lost on the pre-op. I also gained 5 overnight in surgery (liquids) so had to lose that. So while I'm a tad disappointment, I'm not unhappy. I think it was unreasonable hopes given the circumstance. Overall, 39 lbs in a month. I am very, very happy.

    June 2022 surgery buddies

I'll be four weeks post-op tomorrow. My highest weight was 238, surgery weight was 214 and today I weighed 197. I was so excited to get under 200 - it's been a long time! I'm very pleased with my weight loss so far. I stalled for more than a week but just kept doing what I should be doing and the numbers started to drop again. I don't know exactly what I expected but I'm happy with my progress.

I agree. We are like Santa’s bag of toys. We all get thrown in the weight loss surgery bag, and when they ‘shake us out,’ we’ve all had fairly different protocols and yet at the same time, basically the same protocols. best of luck to you! I think what I was MOST thankful for with my practice’s protocol was that clear liquids post op were only one day. I despised the clear liquid protein drinks. 🤢

Stand still for 3-4 months now

How tall are you? 173 you could be nearing the end of your loss depending on your height and weight loss slows down quite a bit near the end. I am 5’8” and mine totally stopped at 169. I am on meds that make you gain weight though and was warned I may not lose as much as people who aren’t on these meds. I’m sure that you will lose more if you cut back on the snacking but those last 20 or so pounds will go much slower than the first few. You may also try adding more exercise.

    Terrified

Pretty much like others said, if you have a calorie deficit you WILL loose weight. You may have stalls through the process but they will end and you will continue to loose weight. The larger you start the faster you loose because your calorie deficit is greater. As you get closer to a "normal size" your weight loss will slow because your calorie deficit is smaller. My dietician actually calculated my calorie deficit at my second visit when I was back onto solid foods and it was 18,590 calories a week! It is crazy how much I was eating to maintain the weight I was at! Do not panic, just follow your plan and it works. We are all proof it works!

    Hello, any veterens around?

I will be at 8 years in November. I never made it to goal but that was ok. Had over a 100lb loss. It started to creep slowly back on- about 10 pounds a year or so. I started to watch more last year and am back to the lowest post-surgical weight so I am very happy with that. I may try for another 25 pounds or so. I haven't decided yet :).
  19. At Costco they have Orgain Clean protein shakes which are lovely. There is both a animal and plant-based version. As far as length of time to do a reset, there are multiple schools of thought out there, however, I would recommend doing what seems right to you. I would start off with a limited diets of protein shakes and green non-starchy vegetables. As you stabilize slowly add in fruit and regular meals. If it continues to be an issue going to a medical weight loss clinic might help too. Good Luck!
  20. Hi Everyi e me again with another stall question. So for the past 3-4 months I have been at a stall. I keep gaining and losing the same 1-2 pounds. I have 20 more pounds to go to reach the doctor’s weight loss goal. I will be one year August 16. I also changed my exercise routine. My eating changed also as I am eating more foods as opposed to drinking my protein. Is this normal?

Trying to get out of my head....

I'm pre-op but being scared of food and restricting is part of my disordered eating and need to be in control. For me, it definitely stems from childhood bad habits and childhood traumas. I've made such amazing progress working with my therapist about it, and she doesn't even specialize in eating disorders or bariatric therapy. It was even helpful describing a trigger for it to my pcp, who validated me and made me feel like I wasn't crazy and alone. Like I said, I'm pre-op, and so my strategies may not help someone post-op, but giving myself a distraction and giving myself grace are the biggest helpers. Logging my food was known to make me anxious and things worse, so my therapist suggested that I only track food sometimes, mainly when I feel like I'm gaining, and to just try to trust myself the rest of the time. Obviously you (and me in the future!), have to track certain things but don't let it destroy your mental health. Also, upping the work outs is going to cause some water retention and you'll need to eat more to fuel yourself, unfortunately a vicious cycle that a personal trainer had to explain to me once when I was panicking about weight loss. It also helped that they had a body composition machine and I could see that though my weight wasn't budging, my fat % was lowering and my muscles mass was growing. Definitely look into a place that has one of those, or even a place that does dexa scans! You're doing so great!!!!
  23. There is nothing you can do but ride it out, I had super long hair and cut it but wish I didn't. But I most likely did the right thing. I have lots of new hair growth now and it's CURLY lol so that's new.

    Terrified

You will likely soon hit the "three week stall" (do a search for it here) where your loss will slow or stop and possibly even increase a bit. This is entirely normal and totally unrelated to what food phase you are in (people who are still on liquids as well as those who have been on soft foods since the start go through it.) It has to do with the matter that initially you are losing a big chunk of water weight associated with your glycogen stores (basically stored carbohydrate) being depleted due to your low calorie intake. Once that is depleted, your body shifts gears to burn your stored fat, which burns more slowly, so the weight loss slows a bit, too. Entirely normal. In our program they specifically tell us that their patients tend to do better as they move into real food - not strictly from a loss rate perspective, but for the sake of feeling better and more energetic, which leads to being more active and helping to maintain a more sustainable loss over the long haul. I was starting to nibble at the gym again after a couple of weeks, not for the sake of boosting loss rate (it didn't need it...) but for maintaining the habit (and not allowing my wife to use me as an excuse for not going!) I was certainly not burning any more calories there than at home, but more just starting to get a bit more variety in activities.

    Pre-op diet query

I wouldn't worry much about it. With only a seven day diet like you describe, it doesn't seem that your program is all that concerned with the "liver shrinking" aspect of it as some programs are, that do longer and more intense diets (some surgeons are seriously intimidated by that issue while others don't care in the least.)It sounds like they are mostly working to transition you to their early post op diet. While they probably don't want fruit in there owing to sugar content, raspberries are on the benign end of the scale there (which is why you may see them on a "keto approved" list somewhere. Which is another lesson here - just because something may be "keto" doesn't mean that it is right or good for your needs. Keto is not necessarily healthy or weight loss oriented (but it can be, if done right - as with many popular diets.) There is plenty of junk food out there that is "keto approved". Most here who want to do keto do something called bariatric keto, which is basically old school Atkins because the macro ratios typically seen in most keto references don't make sense with the small amount that we are eating during our loss phase (generally too low in protein.) Not to mention the dubious nature of being in ketosis - K specifically avoided that owing to its side effects and was still working to slow my weight loss after six months, so it really isn't necessary for successful weight loss, and generally a bad habit to get into for long term health and weight maintenance.
