    Cereal

I love my rolled oats. I was never much of a cereal eater before surgery. The odd bowl of untoasted muesli or rolled oats a couple of times a year. (I ate toast with fresh sliced tomato every morning.) When I was able to eat solid food again after surgery I ate either scrambled eggs or rolled oats. But about 6 months ago I lost my appetite for eggs so I just stuck with rolled oats. I make it with milk & add nothing else but blueberries. I get a good 10+g of protein which is a good start on my daily protein goal. I really enjoy it. It’s a good carb, good source of fibre, has no added sugar or artificial sweetener, it’s an appetite suppressor & helps flush out cholesterol. It easily fills me up for three hours. It’s an easy, no brainer in the morning.
  2. I gained 10 lbs after surgery. It was gone after a week (along with some other weight), but it could take as long as two weeks. Don’t stress about it - it’s perfectly normal and it will go away shortly.

    NO pre-op Liquid Diet...Anyone else?

All surgeons are different my sleeve is Tuesday I wasn't ordered a liquid diet either.. actually found out 10 days before the surgery of the surgery everything was halted due to covid and the surgeon just gave the green light and everything is moving teally fast..Good Luck
  4. in 2011 I was sleeved with no indication of having a hernia. I believe if the doctor saw that, he would have indicated to me that he would go ahead and remove it, but because it wasnt seen then, the sleeve was a stand alone surgery. Now had he done the gastric sleeve with the rny, I think my weight loss success would have been for a long time before gaining little to none weight gain. Nevertheless, the infamous GERD came to crash the party in 2019 and I was scheduled a bariatric doctor for a revision in September 2020. At that point I started the process which leads up to surgery and I was approved by my insurance company, thus my surgery date was 02/23/21. The doctor chose gastric bypass which he indicated that he tightened up my sleeve and rerouted my intestine where whenever I eat, it would bypass my stomach and go straight to my intestine, hence longevity of weight loss. He also mentioned to me that I had an hiatal hernia, which he repaired during the surgery. Because this is a revision, my weight loss will go moderately slow, however I choose to think that is on a "case by case" basis. Ive seen people with this revision go on to lose around 50-60 lbs in 4-5 months. I may very well fall in with these people, due to my rapid weight loss 9 years ago. my hw in 2011 was 303, sw was 289, fw 179, gw 160. I never reached my goal weight the first time, but I lost a total of 110lbs in 1 year, and then in 2013 I couldnt get the skin to tighten up, so I qualified for a panni, aka tummy tuck. i have big turkey wings and that is considered cosmetic, had Ive gotten that done, I probably would have gotten to my goal weight with ease because I went down to 173 after that surgery then the plateau started, but I maintained that weight for 7 years, then in 2019 I went through a depression state and going back to my bad habits, and smoking ciggs, then to make things worse, covid came to join the world so my weight skyrocketed to a shockingly total weight gain in 2 years of 76 lbs of it back. Thats 40 lbs away from going back to my surgery weight! That was a scary thought, but I think if I didnt have the gerd, my hiatal hernia wouldnt have been noticed. I know how to keep my weight down, because I had highs and lows throughout maintaining my weight without having a head game behind the fact that I was no longer 173. I was dating this guy from atlanta for 2 years and all I did was travel, splurge and dine out 3-4 days a week breakfast lunch and dinner. I didnt work and he took care of alll my bills and my childrens tuition for college and high school. This caused me to be settled and gained happy weight then my happy weight went flat as I got tired of being smothered and controlled by him so I left him right after valentines day. I then joined the gym at the end of February 2018 because I had got to 220 in my weight! I was making 50 that year so I wanted to at least get back into my size 9/10 before my birthday. Well I did. I lost 22 lbs in 3 months and was toned and force to be reckoned with. So I know that this is a long response, but I just wanted to share with you my journey as a 2 time bariatric patient. Im 5 days out from my revision, and I have lost a total 17 lbs which is to include losing 10lbs in 3 days from preop preparation. If I stick to the diet the way my nut and my dr has set forth for me, I could very well get past the goal weight they have for me, which is 180, and thats due to my frame, and my height as an African American female. At the rate that Im going, I will have lost a whopping 80 lbs in 2 months! But because the weight loss will be slow, and if I had to guess, I would say to get to MY gw of 160 would probably take me about 7-8 months to achieve that goal. Who knows with a sustained diet and exercise, I could very well get to my goal sooner. I hope this document of a response helps. lol, but best wishes to whatever surgery you decide to choose and God speed on your recovery.
  5. I'd research other surgeons, just to get a feel for the different approachs....then make your decision. There is emerging evidence that prolonged super low calorie diets before and after surgery could reset your metabolism to unrealistically low levels that set you up for weight gain later. (not saying this always happens, not saying this is gosple....bariatrics are an emerging science....just sharing that there are a lot of different ideas at play) My group did a very carb restricted diet for two weeks before surgery. We were allowed to drink 5 shakes a day plus one food item from a list.....but this was just to shrink the liver for an easier procedure. My group wanted 10% weight loss, but expected it to take months. We were required to work with a nutritionist, attend fitness classes, healthy cooking classes, support groups. Our whole process took 4-6 months...just to lay the nutrition groundwork and weight loss work before the surgery. After surgery, we were pushed to eat 1200 calories a day as soon as we could tolerate it...in hopes that this would give us a robust metabolic reset. (to be clear, we went through the gradual restoration of diet after surgery for safety....liquid, puree, soft, etc....but our caloric goals were advanced as tolerated) I lost weight slower than most people....but I made goal, and I'm doing really well maintaining. My preferences and nutrition choices are much healthier. I've got good support for the mental side of this process. I feel like I was better prepared by my group for the work of making the permenant changes necessary and dealing with the lifetime challenges. Be a little careful of clinics that push unrealistically brutal calorie restriction. Eating 600 calories a day will make you lose a crap-ton of weight and will make your clinic look like they offer "The Magic Cure"....but you don't need to be their walking bulletin board for a year and then be abandoned by them when you regain. You need a comprehensive program that supports your needs for a lifetime and teaches healthy nutrition and fitness and supports the mental challenges of breaking the addiction.

    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

Morning again to everyone from over here in the uk. I start my 10 day pre op plan tomorrow. Opting for food based for first week then going to shift to shake based for last few days. Just want the day to come now. Glad to be shifting to the plan as have definitely been eating more in the last fortnight knowing it’s coming..... Looking forward to hearing tales from the ‘early Marchers’ when you start going through x
  7. That's a fairly lowish weight and to lose 10% in two months is doable but you will have to be tight with your eating and exercise. In the first week or two you will lose a lot water/bloat weight so that will give you a kick start. If by the last two weeks you need a weight loss boost you could cut out one of the protein bars and the other if needed by the last week. Is this your preferred surgeon or do you have other options?
  8. 10% in two months is a lot, do you mind if I has how much you weigh and how tall you are? After two months (and expected weight loss) do you immediately qualify for surgery or do you have insurance requirements to meet as well?
  9. I'm at the beginning of this process. I had my first appointment with the doctor on Friday, and he outlined the pre-op diet he wants me to start immediately. In this clinic, they require people to lose 10% of their overall weight before surgery, and he said he expects it to take about 2 months. I was prepared for a few weeks of a really restrictive diet, but not 2+ months. Anyone else started their journey this way? Here's what he wants me to eat: 2 protein shakes (1/2 scoop, made with 8 oz almond milk) 2 protein bars Dinner of 10 forkfuls of protein, 10 forkfuls of veggies
  10. Hey Tim. This was a struggle for me after surgery, too. My first BM after surgery occurred after 10 days. Almost 6 months now, if I go once a week then it’s a win for me, but currently averaging 7-9 days between BMs.
  11. I saw a video on Youtube about a lady headed to the hospital for surgery. She talked about the need for dry mouth spray. I bought some at CVS. They have Biotene dry mouth and the CVS brand. I was so thankful to have it at the hospital. I would encourage folks to take this with them to the hospital. My mouth was so dry I could barely open it. This spray is good stuff! Less than $10. You can use it later as well. Just a little nugget 😎

I can only imagine! The day before you’ll hit that 10 lol. Luckily I didn’t have to wait the 6 months my insurance had no wait.

    Any March 2021 Sleeve Patients?

On a scale of 1-10 I am at a 7 right now lol my surgery is Wednesday and I just really cannot believe it! Seems like I’ve been on this journey forever in reality 6 months lol
  14. I have lost 77 lbs., and 77% body fat. I am 6 months out. I am 51 yrs. old. I have been overweight almost my entire life. I have not exercised at all. I do not have that much extra skin, which is very surprising as I carry most weight in my belly. I was seriously thinking about plastic surgery, but I don't know if I would want to go thru with it. If I can "hide" it under my clothes, then so be it. If I had the surgery 10-15 yrs. ago, then I most likely would have opted for the plastics. I think that age has a lot to do with this decision. Not that I am old, but at this point in my life, I am just happy to have lost the weight, be healthy, and no longer a diabetic, (the main reason for my surgery).

    800 calories a day

I went to see my surgeon for my two year post-op and he was concerned I had gained about 10 lbs since my last visit. My nutritionist put me back on a 800-1,000 calorie diet a day diet. During quarantine, I have really gotten lax on my eating. I honestly forget what 800 calories a day looks like. Do you guys have ideas for 800 a day meals? I am sort of back in the habit in the last week, but it is tough. It is especially tough going from eating carbs/takeout/etc. What are your ideas for low carb/low cal meals? Thanks in advance!
  16. My doctor hasn't said much about the situation besides try and stick to the prescribed vitamins. They are not of much help now as well, due to Covid-19.
  17. Ok. This is just my observations based on MY experience. It may apply to you, it may not, the only real way to find it what works for YOU is to try different approaches. But the main thing to keep in mind, is to give it some time to see if it works. I read alot of people lament a strategy isn't working (or is working) after only a week or so. Change over time is the determining factor in a successful or not strategy. Results after a couple of days is not indicative of the effectiveness of a change. With that said: KETO: At first, I tried to do KETO, but I just couldn't keep up with the fat requirement percentages while aiming for 60g protein, along with my inability to take in volume of food and staying below a certain calorie level. Eventually my diet morphed into protein-forward, ultra-low carb one (max 20g NET carbs, min 60g protein, and let the fat fall where it may, staying under a certain calorie level for my current phase). INTERMITTENT FASTING: I didn't know it until I read up about it, but I was actually doing IF. I didn't/don't eat until after noon (which was normal for me even pre-op), and I didn't eat beyond 7pm..this because I had a horrible experience waking up in the middle of the night spitting up food after surgery and it was enough for me to ensure that I went to bed every night on an empty stomach. I am not yet convinced (though I'm sure others have differing opinions) that IF actually makes you burn more fat, but I do recognize that keeping eating to a limited window does make you eat less calories over all vs. eating all day, so yeah, this would accelerate weight loss. I am now 2+ years post op, and for ME I have learned that it doesn't matter at all what my macros or eating times are, all that matters is total calories, in short CICO. I stopped being ultra-low carb after weight loss phase, and have even re-introduced bread (only my homemade ones, cuz they are delicious, lol) into my diet, and it makes zero difference on my weight (all other things being equal). There was a almost a week after Xmas where my diet consisted almost solely of just desserts. No diff to my weight. I guess because my total average calories per day was still 1800. Of course, health-wise, this wasn't the best idea, but we are just talking weight here. Because of this observation, and my super-anal disposition, I am a big proponent of tracking what you eat with the conscious intention to stay within your maintenance calories the majority of the time. As well as daily weighing, if you can stand it (some cannot, and that's cool...they just have to find another way that works for them). Also, i accept that maintenance is a never-ending series of adjustments. What works for me today may not work for me tomorrow. And what weight/size I consider acceptable today may be 10 lbs heavier further down the line. In short decide what you want today, and determine if you are willing to do what it takes to get it. If you aren't, change what you want. Sorry this was so long. Good Luck! P.S. after re-reading my post, I realize I sort of went off topic, but whateves, it's still what I wanted to say! LOL. Sorry! P.P.S. Also wanted to add the while I think going low or ultra-low carb makes little difference to my weight, it does make a difference to how I look. Lower carb intake levels make me look LESS puffier/fuller, which is good for my bod, but bad for face.

    Heavy weights/ powerlifting post VSG

My surgeon said to wait 5 weeks with anything above 10 pounds. I am looking forward to getting back in the gym. My wife asked to stop over a year ago. She said I was just getting bigger and not losing weight...which I was.
  20. Hi, I'm starting to extremely worry about my hair. I've read a few posts regarding thin hair/hair loss post operation and most of them have said they have gotten their hair back to normal 6-10 months post operation. It's been almost 2 years since my operation and past month or two my hair has been shredding quite heavily, just by sweeping my hands through my hair, I would get around 10-20 pieces of hair on my palm. Unfortunately, I've been stupid and neglected my required vitamins in the early stages after my operation until recent, where I've been required to take; B12 injection every 3 months, Fultium-D3 20000U capsules once a week and Calcichew-D3 500 MG chewable tablets twice a day. I'm currently also not meeting my required daily protein intake, will using protein shakes/bars on top of food that contains protein help with my hair loss? My worry is, am I losing hair or is my hair just thinning? Is it too late to save it now? Will it ever go back to how it used to be? I'm only 23 years of age and it just looks horrendous when my hair is in that state... Please see attached images of my hair.

    Heavy weights/ powerlifting post VSG

I do not lift heavy, but I incorporated traditional strength training at about 10 weeks. I think it has really helped with my results. Just check with your surgeon on when it is ok to start. I built up to about an hour of weights 2-3 days per week (3 sets moderate weight for 8-12 reps), plus some functional strength training a couple of times per week. Good luck! 😊 ps. I had RNY vs VSG, but I think with regards to this question, surgery does not matter too much.
  22. My wife and I did a few last meals before our surgeries. When we scheduled our surgery we only had 2 days before to eat whatever we wanted before we started our Preop diet. We ate responsibly and didn't over eat at that time. Our last meal was sushi and we did enjoy it. We are working on eating only foods that are an 8/10 for us and that has helped us so far on our journey.
  23. my dietitian (and surgeon, too) told me specifically NOT to make normal BMI my goal, since, as I said, he told me only 10-15% of his patients make it that far. When I went in for my first consult, I told them my goal was to weigh 200 lbs. They said that was very reasonable. When I got there, I told them I now wanted to weigh 170-180. They told me if I worked really hard at it, that was do-able, too. When I got there and told them I now wanted to make it to a normal BMI (which at my height, is under 155 lbs), they looked a bit alarmed and warned me that very few people make it that far, so that wasn't a reasonable goal. I did eventually make it, but I'm very aware that this isn't the norm. Honestly, I would have been happy weighing anything less than 200 lbs, after being over 300 for so many years. I mean, I'm glad I was able to lose all of my excess weight, but I would have been really happy even being under 200 lbs for once in...well, forever.
  24. the no-hunger thing is great and makes it fairly easy to lose weight the first few months. It doesn't happen to everyone - but it seems to to most people. I had no hunger for the first five months. It was wonderful - wish it would have lasted! I don't remember feeling bloated (although I might have - it's been almost six years) - but it's probably gas or fluid retention from the IV. Some people report gaining up to 10 lbs from the fluid. Takes it a a good week or so to work its way out of your system.
  25. my surgeon said only about 10-15% of his patients make it to a normal BMI. The research I've read backs that up. A lot of people don't want to believe that, but....
