  1. 1) Absolutely. I had so well prepared myself that it was relatively easy to adopt to different foods, different ways of doing thing. I wasn't even scared going under that I had made a mistake. Never once have I wished I hadn't done it. It is just such a relief to be freed of weight gain worries. Course I am only 4 months out, but it has become such a lifestyle it is like it never happened - I just eat a lot less than I used to and keep getting healthier. 2) Wish I had been prepared for additional hormonal changes. Although I had be menopausal for years, it appears I have had a reversal of all that.

    Introduction

Hi all! So happy I found this site. Well to begin I have struggled woth dieting since my 20's. I turned 38 last year and had finally had enough. After 4 kids my max weight had reached up to 267 lbs. I couldn't believe it. It's like size 12 gradually went to size 20. While my hudbad is wonderful and loves me at any size I knew the weight gain was unhealthy. I read somewhere that losing weight after 35 gets more difficult and it was true. I had enough of 20 lbs here and there. So I consulted with my doctor after medication for weight management for 3 months I lost 20 lbs but in my heart I had decided on surgery. I have no medical complications and I actually love my veggies heck I evrn enjoy working out. The problem was the weight was not motivating and the habit of overeating was so entrenched. After weeks of classes I finally had surgery on 1/12/15. Let me also add that 4 months prior to surgery I stopped taking the pills and had gained 12 lbs back. So my weight a month before surgery was 263. At my pre op appointment doctor told me to lose 10 lbs in 3 weeks whuch was also over the Christmas holidays. Talk about stressful but I did it on the day of surgery I weighed 252.5 lbs. After surgery was horrific. I am 6 days past surgery and I still haven't mastered my water intake or my protein shakes. I will say that I discovered that warm or hot water with a ginger tea bag is my new best friend. I am also trying to do an once of protien at the top of every hour. I have no clue how I could eat food right now although I so badly want to be able to eat. Not over eat but have something of substance the past two weeks just seems so unhealthy I weighed today and I have lost 10 lbs since surgery. Not sure how I feel about that.
  3. I tried to post yesterday but don't see my comments. Oh well. My story is that I'm now 6 years out as of Jan 9. I don't struggle with weight at all. I started at around 240 and am now 136/137 at 5'7. I wear a size 4 with no changes. I have even been through menopause during this last few years with no weight gain. I don't kill myself with exercise but I do lift weights and have for 20 years and do light cardio. It's just not necessary to do more to maintain. Also, I eat a plant based diet so the majority of my intake is carbs. I've also had 2 rounds of plastics. The first one was 4 1/2 years ago and the second a year later. I just think this is where my body wants to be. I do suffer from autoimmune arthritis and osteoarthritis and need knee replacements but I'm not ready for that yet. I'm actually afraid I'll lose more weight with a big surgery. Laura
  4. ALMOST 5 YEARS OUT!! Long story short. Sleeved April 2010 went from 230s to 108 at my lowest. Stayed steady from year 2-3. After 3 years out stayed steady at 118 for another year. Now year 4-5 I am 128. Now take into account I workout at least 4-5 days a week including weight training & running 7-10 miles a week. I do believe some of the weight gain is muscle. I went from a 0/2 to a 6/8 now. I used to drop pounds just breathing. Now I have to work really hard. Bottom line eating better & working out is the only key. I vowed to never return to my previous weight. Ever. Stay strong everyone!! Btw: I am 4'11 & 37 years old. With 2 children. I also wanted to add that the number on the scale isn't what I fully look at. Yes I may have been 108 lbs at one point but I looked like skin hanging on bones. Now I am happy looking healthy & strong. I have worked through many aches & pains working out & running. From ankles, knees & hips.
  5. Newbies... Relax... Key your took do it's job and don't obsess over the numbers in a scale. Follow your plan, step on a scale once every couple weeks... Measure once a month... It will happen.. Now I have been sleeved over 2 years.. I lost a boat load (287 to 115) and an currently struggling with a 15 pound weight gain. Don't sound like much, however it seems to be a huge difference in clothes. At 115 for over a year, a size 2; to a size 10????? In a matter of 3-4 months??? This is the craziest thing ever! Sorry, just needed to vent.

    How much Protein?

No it will not make you gain weight. Weight gain or loss also depends on the other micro-nutrients. How many carbs are you eating. Are they simple or complex carbs? How much sodium are you getting a day? How much sugar? Other factors: Are you drinking 64 ounces of fluids, mostly Water? Are you exercising?

    Dr. Christopher Cobourn

Hi There! I have been working with Dr. Cobourn for several weeks now. I essentially also spoke to him when i inquired about the process. He is extremely nice, and dedicated to the craft. I was able to speak with him, and he appeared to be very realistic regarding the results. He was very clear this was a tool and I need to work alongside it in order to achieve success. Since the holidays (Christmas 2014) I have been working with the Smart Shape team. They have been very supportive and very professional. My surgery is Wednesday of next week. I am anxious, excited and scared - all of the above times 10! I have never been put under, and I worry about this stuff, and naturally i think anyone does. I was so scared a week ago that Dr. Cobourn personally called me again and reassured me that this is normal, and truthfully there is nothing to worry about. He made me feel very comfortable and I was able to shift my focus from fear to thinking about my new shape! The cost of the surgery is rather expensive, but I have tried many different avenues at weight loss and everything seems to lead me back to weight gain. It's time I do something that I am convinced will work - crossing fingers. As for reviews, in my experience i have done a lot of internet research and of course spoken to a few folks who have had the surgery locally here in Toronto. I find the internet is filled with a myriad of posts, comments. I had to realize quickly some people who do not follow the healthy lifestyle after banding are quick to say it does not work. Every experience will be different but overall this process seems to work for many people. Best of Luck!

    Artificial Sweeteners?

Studies have found that artificial sweeteners create a false dependency. They stimulate your appetite, Increase carbohydrate cravings and stimulate fat storage and weight gain. In short artificial sugars prepare your body for food that often is not coming and thus confuses your system while also making your body crave more and more sweeter things.
  10. Well the bad news is I didn't see a great deal of movement on my scale this week - in fact the only movement I had went up slightly - 300g, Taking me back to 12kg loss total!!! The good news is that I saw my dietician this morning and have been well assured that this is actually normal. I clearly need to have another fill which is scheduled for next Friday. I was really bummed about my weight gain yesterday and thank goodness for some very close friends of mine that are there for me all the way and supporting me because I really needed it yesterday. Today I have a much clearer mind and totally understand that it's a process!!!!! livelovelapband.blogspot.com.au

  12. I had a "secret lap band" in 2008 and it was REALLY hard not telling people. only my parents and husband knew of the surgery. The fact that everybody knows me for my hefty eating habits made me self conscious during holidays and dinners with friends and family. This made me try to be discrete and I would eat more than I should have with did not help me in the long run. My band slipped during my last pregnancy (less than 1 year post-op) and I've had reflux issues and weight gain. Now I weigh more than I did at 9 months pregnant and I'm preparing for a revision surgery to get the sleeve after the band comes out. I don't want to hide this surgery, I don't want to come up with excuses for not eating, not being hungry and actually even eating more than I should. Who cares what people say, EVEN IF IT YOUR MOTHER, we are adults and this is a medical decision for our health.

    Help!

@emk101009 wonderful weight loss how do you know hungry you "should" be???? "it" varies for all of us some of us might never have lost their hunger issues others maybe at 3 months others at.............. stalls happen to most all of us Get Over It must be patient - it will pass (like gas ) time periods/stalls will vary from 3 weeks to.............. God Grant Me Patience, Just Hurry Up About It!!! We're all different we lose amount of weight in different time periods we lose inches at the beginning from different areas ie less boobs or less tushy!!! yogurt is not that filling but it is great, and has lots of Protein too you can never have too much protein during the day dense protein like chicken is wonderful - very filling you didn't chew thoroughly?? means you probably ate too fast too!!!! KNOCK IT OFF slow down with your eating and chew better that wouldn't cause you to stretch your sleeve after each bite, put your utensil down for a few seconds too use a baby spoon - that helps too i "think" many people at one time or another worry that they might have stretched their new little tummies as far as "stretching" your tummy eat wayyyy too much food, too fast all morning, noon, afternoon, evening & night in other words 24/7 grazing ALL day (like you/me did in the good 'ol days this will cause weight gain but as far as stretching the sleeve - don't "think"it happens follow all the rules and things should be good you'll get wrinkles if you worry toooo much good luck 43 lbs down!!! kathy congrats

    Introducing Myself- Surgery Jan 21

Thank you Anaxila, your suggestions are very helpful! I'm 42, our profiles are very similar. I haven't heard of the DVDs you suggested I'll check them out. I'm planning on going to the Y, I just have to get over the intimidation factor of the whole bathing suit thing. It's been such a cycle for me of gaining weight and wanting to isolate because of my appearance which contributes to my weight gain and on and on. I'm ready to step off of this ride!
  16. I am a pre-op sleever dreamer. I am almost done with my 3 months of supervised NUT visits (as that's my insurance requirements). At every visit so far, I have lost weight. I have not tried consistently to lose weight, I am just trying to eat better-exercise more. My question is, has anyone had any problems with insurance declining due to weight gain or not enough weight lost during the NUT phase of the pre-op requirements?

    Clear liquid Diet

Checking labels for sodium content may be a good idea. Some broths are loaded with salt. You may also want to make sure your scale is accurate. If none of those, I would recommend calling the doctor's office. It sounds like you may be retaining Fluid as a large weight gain in a very short period of time is indicative of that. Also, may want to clarify if you are actually to have Clear liquids for 10 days; most pre-op diets are full liquids. Clear liquids are common the day or 2 before surgery.
  18. Thanks for sharing your story, congratulations on your success. I know many of us have lost only to regain prior to getting surgery. I think you offer some good advice, to get to the underlying issues and the "why" of weight gain. I'm sorry you are struggling, but happy that you are seeking help and thankful that you are reaching out to help all of us.

Tummy Tuck In 2 Days -Dec 17th

I don't know about how weight gain works. But I do know and have heard that u will never get a tummy again. I love my results. I'm 3 weeks post Op and I have lost 35 lbs. I am still swollen and will continue to lose . they said it takes a full 6 months for swelling to go down. I'm actually making me an appt for a fill next month. I just want to make sire everything is still in tack and I think I need a fill anyway. I'm very happy about getting a tummy tuck.
  20. I have been struggling with my weight "forever". As a child I was compared with my younger sister who had an overactive thyroid (thus underweight) and I felt "fat" (in reality my thyroid was hypoactive at the time and never investigated). Then after getting married (I weighed 125 and still thought I was fat), having 4 children (gaining about 5 lbs after each child) and chose to end my marriage of 15 years (he had an affair and wanted me to "accept her") I ended up gaining 100 lbs the year after the divorce. After 20 years living on my own I had the surgery to prevent (and reverse) the health issues of obesity and start to care for myself. I had been watching my mother waddle around the house as a "butterball" and knew if I didn't make changes I would be in the same boat but wouldn't have anyone to care for me since I am alone. I have been working with a therapist for PTSD and have realized that I have lived my life since childhood caring for everyone else and putting myself last. I have been in a spiral of self hatred for decades and used food to stuff my feelings, bury the pain, hurt and neglect that I experienced as a child and then as a wife in a unhealthy relationship. I started taking antidepressants in October 2013 because my world seemed to be crashing down around me. I ended up quitting my job in January 2014 because of panic attacks and paranoia from verbal threats from my patients (I can tell you that the rumors about the VA medical care are true and the doctors are not supported by the upper management) Around August 2014 my weight loss stopped (not just stalled) and I gained 10 lbs. For months I tried different tips with diet, exercise, Water intake and changing around my Protein intake but no luck getting to my weight goal. Today I realized that weight gain is typical with antidepressant use (duh, even doctors forget the basics) and I had titrated up to a high dose of medication in August. I am learning to "love" myself (this is very foreign to me) and know I am not ready to stop taking the medication. I am satisfied with my current weight and know when I work through several issues from the past I will be able to get to my goal weight. This is my "ah-ha" moment so I wanted to share.
  21. Mo-I had no idea that mine had eroded I thought because I gained weight from the baby I was just tight. But I was basically throwing up /PBing everything I would eat even sliders which is the opposite of erosion but at the same time I felt like I was always hungry and and couldn't eat enough. So when I went in and had the upper GI done they saw I had a hiatal hernia which was causing me to throw up and the band had eroded which is what was attributing to be weight gain and intense hunger. So when they offered me the sleeve I took it. I'm so glad I did. 4 weeks post op and I'm down 32 lbs. I spent two years being miserable with the band not being able to eat and always being hungry. It was a losing battle for me. So glad to see all of you on here!
  22. I started out at 255 and got down to 172... My goal was 165, but I looked and felt good at 172... It's been two years and I am now at 192, and not happy about it at all... I am eating (usually) within MyFitness Pal caloric intake (1300 cal per day) but not able to lose weight - I know I need to bump up my exercise but my primary "thing" was walking and my weight gain has exacerbated my plantar fasciitis and just routine walking is painful... (I know, excuses)... I felt so good when I lost the weight, but can't seem to get in sync again... I would like to try the 5:2 fast plan, but usually when I get really hungry I get jittery and light headed... Could I do the whole fast day using protein shakes? I need to do something to kickstart my weight loss...

    Antibiotics

So I had to do some research here because I was on program and the day after I started antibiotics I gained weight. It's not Water retention. The articles I read indicate that antibiotics mess around with the bacteria composition of the gut and could cause weight gain.

    The "bariatric Blues"

Everything is normal. My motto is that just like you have to kiss a lot of frogs until you find your Prince, you have to try a lot of shakes until you find one that suits you. Buy single serving packs or samples whereever you can. Try RTD , powders , shots and liquid Proteins. Also try yogurts (I prefer Fage 0%,) or Kefir. Once you can get in your proteins and fluids your energy level will perk right up. In the mean time make sure you are taking your Vitamins and supplements. As for the weight gain, do not worry. I bet you haven't had a BM yet either. Either way, it's early days and your body is adjusting to major surgery and an entirely new eating program. Once it realizes that you are not starving or dying it will release the calories.
  25. I don't have a gallbladder so my body doesn't break down foods like other people so I'm used to gas, acid issues, occasional heartburn or reflux if really bad. By my second and third child being C-sections the gas and pain was bad. Currently I suffer with dermatitis, arthritis to most of my joints, hair thining plus bluh, bluh. I've tried all conventional methods to lose weight nothing has been sustainable. I'm at my biggest ever and I'm feeling it all over. Depression and boredom along with allot of different circumstances have meant weight gain. Please keep sharing because your all insprational to me and all you have to say is a big support. No one understands unless you experience it yourself. Thanks girls.
