    Falling Off :(

I went through a period last May where I chose not to get an adjustment...going to Disneyland. But later realized I needed to get my head back into the game of why I needed to lose the weight in the first place. I am one to admit I've taken it slower than most. I am now in the green zone and feel good about this adjustment and loss. You will have those ups and downs and off the wagons...it's ok. I'm enjoying the restriction I can honestly say...hunger may mean u need an adjustment, up your protein intake, or spice up your menus

    Lap Band, Sept 08..??

Hi amanda. I am mathmatically challenged, so maybe you can help me. How many pounds is 12 kilos? I got my band on September 19, 2008. I am so sorry that you, and fatmommyslim, are not having the results that you were hoping for. With your 3 fills, do you have any restriction? Many times I don't think real good weight loss begins until you have real good restriction. I hope that things get better for you both - if I can do anything to help, please let me know. I'm certainly no expert, but I am a good listener. Take care!! Becky

    Introducing myself

My insurance also required the 6 month weight loss attempt. Don't view it as a roadblock, or delay, but as an opportunity to learn all you can about the band, the surgery, what to expect, the good, bad and ugly. During my 6 months I joined here and read everything I could (obesityhelp.com is another place to get lots of info). There are several good books out that would be helpful to read. Two that I have are The Lapband Solution, and The Lapband Companion. I got them from Amazon. There are many others, as well as cookbooks for post op, you name it. I also spent time adjusting my attitude. I work in a fairly large office and my desk is at one end. The phtocopier/scanner is at the other. Originially I resented the hike every time I needed to copy or scan (walk to the scanner, put papers in, walk back to my desk, activate the scanning software, when done walk back to get my papers and back again to my desk). Now I view it as an opportunity to get up from my desk, and as additional exercise walking back and forth. I stopped being mad about it. By the time I had surgery I knew so much about it I could almost do the surgery myself (just kidding). I also got my head around the fact that for the band to work, I had to adhere to the program, make a committment to exercise and eat better. I still try to eat too much, and maybe don't chew as thoroughly, but with very little restriction I have lost around 80 pounds. I had one fill that made me so uncomfortable I had 2 unfills. The last time I saw the doctor for a fill he talked me out of it because I had still lost 7 pounds between visits, and he said I was ahead of schedule for weight loss for all three bariatric surgeries. So I can eat more, but I am eating better, and occasionally the density of the protein or something will remind me there is some restriction, if not a lot. I am very happy with my progress so far.

    How do you feel?

I quit taking daily naps about 2 weeks post-op; started feeling "normal" at about 6 weeks. There was quite a change when I started on real food. The weight loss slowed, until my intestines adjusted to working again, but my alertness and energy went up.

    2nd fill no restriction- ugh

Don't get discouraged! Every person is different, I know you've probably heard that a million times by now, but it is absolutely true. It took me 3 fills to reach restriction, it took a friend of ine 6! Just keep doing what you need to do and when you get there it will be SOOOO much easier! Being at the right restriction basically allows you to eat small portions and feel "full" (not the full you used to feel, but close). Then you won't even THINK about eating until at least 4-5 hours later. Eating becomes an afterthought because you're just not hungry. For me right now, eating is a "checklist". Did I get enough Protein, did I get enough Fiber, did I drink enough Water? etc. I do splurge and eat what I want. I guess I am very lucky as I am at my "sweet spot" but can still eat whatever I want in whatever portion I choose, I just don't want to. For example, I ate like a total pig Thurs & Friday, then didn't feel like eating a single thing Sat or Sun so I didn't. My body works in odd ways since banding, but I LOVE IT!! I only chose to tell the people closest to me for the very reason you wish you hadn't told anyone. It's hard enough to stick to the plan and lose weight without a million people watching and waiting to see massive weight loss. I would suggest you educate these people in the REAL way the band works, which is slow and long term. That way they can understand and support you during this difficult time, instead of you feeling pressure to lose faster. Nothing is worse than that. Keep up the good work, it WILL come off just be patient!!!

    Banded 05/2008 Tampa FL

Hi Doberman, I'm a Sheltie lover myself with an older Flat Coat Retriever that is as comfortable as my worn out stretch pants... :cursing: How many fills have you had, and is it that you don't feel any restriction or have you not changed to a low fat-low sugar food plan? You've got too much invested in this to fail, what do you think you need to start over or get back on the weight loss track. Do you walk or exercise?

    Those who are unsupportive

I have some before and after pics and some of the "Life" experiances I have had since weight loss, posted on my photobucket account. In the end you have to decided what will work for you, but for me this has been an awesome journey! JC str8jacket29 - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
  8. Hey there! I had my 1st consult with Dr. Holover on the 17th. I have my first appointment with the cardiologist today. I'm hoping to get everything done soon but I have Aetna and they require a 6 month physician supervised weight loss regimen :girl_hug: Oh well...it will be worth it. I just hope it all goes by fast. I'm anxious :girl_hug: How do you like Dr. Holover? So far he seems cool :rolleyes2:
  9. Hi fellow sleevers. I have not posted in awhile but come back to this life-saving forum and read often. I had my surgery on Oct 3, 2011 just 3 weeks shy of my 68th birthday (best gift ever to myself). I have lost 90 lbs and my health reports are great now, but I still fall in the BMI of 35 (still obese, started at 48). Even though I watch carbs, sugar, get protein and water and exercise in, I vary betwen 212 and 216. I was hoping to have lost 100 lbs by the one year date. My question is has anyone here continued to lose after the one year mark and do you have any suggestions as to how I might kick start my loss? I so apreciate all of your suport and in put.
  10. Hello, I have been over 100 pounds overweight for most of my life. I am just beginning the process and want to learn from others who have been banded. I was turned down by GH Coop 3 times because my BMI was 39 and my comorbidities were not severe enough. So am now going private pay and have found St. Francis Hospital Center for weight loss and they understand that I need help and if I pass all my labs, phych and physical tests will be happy to help me. Can anyone tell me what kind of questions will be asked at the phych evaluation? pkw

How The Heck Do You Guys Do It?!

A couple things: first, you have a limited window (1 to 1.5 years) to work with where you need to get off all the weight you can because outside of that window it could be as difficult to lose weight as it was presurgery. This fact alone should make it a priority in your life. Two, you need to find an activity (ideally activities) that you enjoy. I discovered running. I have friends who bicycle and that would bore me to death. Running bores them lol! Third, I found that setting goals kept me motivated to continue. For me it was being able to run continuously for as long as possible without walking. This was too vague of a goal so I started losing interest. Someone mentioned doing a 5k (which I had never done) and I started training for it. I finally worked up the ability to run 3 miles without walking. The first time I did it I was on the treadmill in the middle of the gym crying lol! The next goal was to be able to do 10k without walking. Accomplished that! Now I am into week 4 of working on a half-marathon training plan. I'd like to do it without walking but the first one will be all about finishing (and getting one of those silly 13.1 stickers to put on my car (and possibly a tattoo of the same!). A frequent question at this point is whether I will ever do a full marathon. I refuse to consider that until I've done a half marathon or two (don't want to get discouraged by overreaching). Lastly, it's said that it takes 21 days for an activity to become a habit. Find your activity and keep doing it until it's something you do as a necessity without thinking (like brushing your teeth or putting on deodorant ever day). It could take you less than 21 days or maybe more, either way keep at it. Weight-loss surgery gave us a second chance - it's up to us to squeeze everything we can out of it.
  13. Good Luck! I am sure you can do it. My surgeon is requiring a 5 lb loss (Yeah I dunno either) but I was told when I start my 10 day pre surgery non liquid, sometimes liquid, kinda liquid diet, that I would be weighed before and on the last day and if I don't loose, that my surgery would be cancelled.

    Which Weight Counts?!

I didn't have to lose any weight prior to my pre-op diet that I will start soon. But every weight loss program is different. My surgeon said ok as of now try not to gain any weight, either lose weight or stay at your current weight until insurance approval. And approved 1/18. ???? Now the first weight loss program that I was on required a stupid 10% of weight loss prior to pre-op. ???? I was suppose to lose 25lbs. My insurance approved it but the stupid surgeon did not approve me cuz I only lost 17lbs. ???? sorry it's super long. I hope it helps!?
  15. Yes, I gained weight during the 6 months of nutrition classes. My insurance company doesn't require a certain amount of weight loss. My surgeon recommends losing 5-10 pounds before surgery. I imagine most of that will also come off during the pre-op diet.
  16. Hello, I'm new to this forum and starting research into it. Can't excercise due to multiple disk bulges in spine, so this could be a huge help! I'm sick of my huge stomach. I also have a child w/ Aspergers so I need to be around for as long as possible. Don't need a lot of risk or down time in recovery. How many of you have had a lot of weight loss w/ this? Glad to find you all. :rolleyes2:
  17. My info seminar was VERY informative. My surgeon conducted it and had a powerpoint slide show containing information about the different types of weight loss surgery which definitely helped me decide on the sleeve over the lap-band. Ask any and every question you have. You should feel informed and comfortable enough to take the next steps required to sign up for the surgery. Ask about the surgeon's success rate, and about leakage stats. You want to make sure you'll be in good hands. i'm sure there are threads here on VST that can give you ideas on questions you should ask the surgeon. Good luck!

6 Months Out of Surgery - Need Help

I am experiencing the same thing. It started right at 4 mos. post-op. Protein is not the issue for me as I get the right amount daily. I don't buy into the stress of surgery school of thought either since I've had other surgeries and never lost my hair. I believe it has to do with a decrease in fat consumption so I began taking flax seed oil last week. I started on Biotin a few weeks ago. I here it's only temporary so hang in there. Donna

    22- To 18 What A Blessing!!!

way to go ! its a great feeling when your pants start sliding off your rear end, isnt it ???? suddenly it was , i cant wear that anymore, its too big !!!! wow !!! ..............it was beyond shocking when i went frm a size 18-1x to a 16, now 14, and some 12's ! unbelievable, but it WILL happen to you too ! iwas banded Dec13th, 2011, down 55 lbs with about 30 to go. So, start shopping at Goodwill or other 2nd hand stores. i get 90% of my clothes there, shop once a week, and try to look for clothes that you will grow into this winter, not that just fit now. Then on a morning when you are standing in your underware because NOTHING fits, you can be very happy "shopping your closet" for smaller sizes. I get LOTS of compliments on my nice clothes (Im 54!) and how i look, and trust me, it never gets old !! (im happily married, get lots of support and compliments from hubby, but the first time a male aqaintance noticed my weight loss and said "girl, you are smokin !!!!" i just about wet my pants !!!! ) It will happen to you too , so keep up the good work !! Good luck !
  24. Hello Everyone! Not sure if I am posting in the right place or not. Tomorrow is my very first appointment to begin my weight loss journey. I live in the Metro Detroit area and will be going through the Beaumont Weight Control Center. I am excited and nervous at the same time. Food has been a comfort, but I need help. I think I have tried everything out there. I understand this will not be easy, but honestly I cannot continue on my current path. I will be 49 in July and I am having my 2nd knee replacement next month. I swear I have the joints of a 90 year old! I also am being treated for Psoriatic Arthritis, high blood pressure and I have been using a CPAP machine since 2019. I'm 5'4 and my current BMI is 41.7 (243lbs). Insurance wise, I do not believe I qualify to be fast track....I think my BMI needs to be over 50. I am just hoping for the best and that I can be approved. My joints are in constant pain and exercise right now with my knee is almost impossible. Has anyone ever had the 6 month supervised medical waived with a BMI under 50? Anyway, I look forward to making some new friends here and absorbing the wealth of knowledge on this forum.
  25. Hello all I am going through the motions to be banded....I didn't think that the process was so overwhelming... the waiting....appointments..if nothing else I've grown new grey hairs. Like they say good things come to those who wait... I almost talked myself out of the procedure...but one night i looked at my advantages vs. the disadvantage..and changed my mind ASAP... In need of support.....:tongue2:
