    3 Week Post Op

I'm also feeling a bit that way.... I am 15 days post op and on clear liquids, so I'm not even eating anything and as of today I am down 17 pounds. I'm down a total of 34pounds (including the 10 day liquid diet before surgery). I'm chosing to stay positive and be thankful that I am most importantly losing! Good luck to you and I hope it starts to melt off of you!!!
  2. I've always been a pickup guy for my main ride.....however the ride that did change as a result of my sleeve is two wheels.......and pedal power. I actually ride a bicycle now. And I LIKE it.......go figure. I get a real thrill putting in 10 to 20 miles for exercise and enjoyment. If really feels great. I even........drum roll.........found I needed to get those tight fitting spandex biking shorts for riding.....and the shirts too. Can't help laughing about that (doesn't seem real).......but it does feel good to feel normal when riding and look the part and not stand out as a joke on a bicycle.

    When does the light shine

I have to say I feel the same way. I was sleeved on 8/10/17 and have been trying to do this liquid diet. I am so over this! I am exhausted, I know I am not getting all my nutrients in, everything taste like prunes and I'm just over it. I have my follow up with my provider tomorrow and I am hoping to get started on my vitamins and maybe start the puréed foods a little early.
  4. Yes I just got my call yesterday that my insurance approved my Sleeve surgery !!! Aug.19 is the surgery day !!! I'm excited and nervous [emoji1] Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

  6. My everyday driver is a 07 escalade. I drove a 97 tahoe for 10 years and finally traded it off this past January. My fun car is a 65 mustang fastback. I can squeeze in it but just barely. I've decided to get the sleeve and I'm ready for a new journey in life!

    What to take to hospital

Good Luck for tomorrow!!!! You'll be fine, I promise. Day 19 for me and I havent stopped eating and drinking all long weekend.....Can't wait for a fill.
  8. Thanks Astromom. I'm still somewhat sore on day 3 but I got out and walked this morning for 45 minutes and I feel ok so far. Took the bandages off today and I look like I went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson lol. Bruised up pretty good. Thanks for the advice and just supporting me. It's good to be able to talk to people who have been through this and have probably asked all these questions at one time or another.

    Venting

Hi everyone. First time I'm posting. I got my surgery date, June 13, and I'm sooo excited. It's been a long process. I started with the first phone call to Oregon weight loss surgery sept 20,2011. What I'm struggling with is that my phys asst wants me to lose 10 lbs before surg. I have 9 to go and my check up is the 8th! I've had a horrible week...my friend was murdered at my work and I found out my husbands company is transferring us to Arizona. The stress is not helping with weight loss and I will be devastated if they push my surgery out a month. It's not like the insurance company wants it the dr thought ur would be a good goal. I had lost the 10 pounds around month 4 and gained it back month 5and 6. Precisely why I'm getting this surgery!,,! That's all

    future stomach problems

This seems to be something that is pretty far out to be worried about, after all the risk of getting ANY NUMBER of diseases while remaining obese with an entire stomach is just about 100%. Most of us were headed down a pretty self destructive path and the sleeve is just one tool we can use to take an off ramp and hopefully head towards healthy living. Besides there are actually quite a few people that live WITHOUT a stomach at all. http://cancer.about.com/b/2006/06/19/family-at-risk-for-stomach-cancer-has-stomach-removal-surgery.htm Don't worry about it.

    Shoulder pain...

I am ten days post op and still have some discomfort in my shoulder. It actually comes and goes now. I have less discomfort after walking. The gas-x strips really didn't help me. I kept taking them, but I noticed after walking maybe 5 to 10 minutes, I would start releasing the gas (TMI I know). That would bring immediate relief. I hope you feel better soon.
  13. Good Luck! I was sleeved on 10/3/12 and absolutely NO REGRETS! Down 30 pounds since. Feel awesome! I too had thoughts racing through my head and stressed out but miracously as I walked through the hospital doors that morning I felt a sense of calm come over me. I did great! No complications. Best gift I ever gave myself. Good Luck and keep us posted on your progress! If you have any questions to help settle your mind, ask away....
  14. Now that I am "approved" for surgery and this is becoming a reality, I figured NOW is the time to post my story so far. I am 49, 5'7 and 235 at my highest weight. (Can't believe I actually wrote that down for public consumption!) That made me a BMI of 36.8. I had considered weight loss surgery off and on throughout the years of yo-yo dieting. My last good weight loss was about 30 pounds back in 2009 and I was lighter then. So that means I have put on about 40 pounds in four years. (Less than a pound a month, not too bad, right??!! Ha!) I have some lung problems, high blood pressure (if you would only lose weight, you wouldn't have to take these pills anymore....) and hypothyroidism. Too much for someone my age I decided and started considering the lap-band. I am a nurse and considered that to be "least invasive" and "easiest" to have done surgically. On November 28, 2012, I signed the hubby and I up for an informational seminar. While hubby wasn't interested (I'm hoping to change that), I listened to the doctor present the band, sleeve and RNY options. To his credit, he didn't try to sway anyone to any one procedure, but I had changed my thinking from lap-band to sleeve. I submitted my "insurance verification" form and left. In lateDecember/early January, I was contacted by the doctor's office and told that my insurance (CIGNA) did provide WLS benefits. I had started a post-holiday "kind of" diet about mid-January with Weight Watchers. I saw my surgeon for the first time on January 28, 2013. We discussed all the usual things and agreed that the sleeve was a good procedure for me. My only beef with the process was that the coordinator told me "All your insurance needs is the evaluation and 3 months of diet history. Just print out Weight Watchers and it will be ok." More on that in a minute.... From there, I had: EGD (endoscopy) on 2-4 and found to have a small hiatal hernia. Psych eval and nutrition eval on 2-13. In the mean time, I had researched CIGNA's bariatric policy and found out that I needed a lot more than "Just 3 months of Weight Watcher history." Rather than chance it, I went and got clearance from my PMD and met with a nutritionist for 3 months of a supervised diet. (2-20, 3-16 and 4-20...boy am I glad I started that "kind of diet" back in January!) Am now at 222 (fluctuating pounds.) My coordinator submitted my packet on about May 10th with a comment of "everything looks great...should be no problem." On May 17th, I was notified of denial...based on two points. My physician had failed to state that he BOTH recommended me for the surgery AND cleared me (he only recommended me....despite the fact I had asked him to do both.) The nutritionist did a summary report that detailed all three visits, with all of the components required, but CIGNA wanted it in three separate notes. At least it wasnt because of medical criteria! So...my coordinator got all that together and on May 21st, she submitted again, stating it could take up to 90 days, but probably not that long. The waiting is the hardest part!!! Well, today I got the news I was waiting for...APPROVED! It took 7 business days for the appeal. Now we are in fast-forward mode: 6-10: Pre-op meeting with surgeon to sign consents, etc... 6-15: Start of pre-op diet! (Not looking forward to it....) 6-17: Pre-op lab/x-ray work at hospital 6-25: Surgery I travel for my work (I am a healthcare consultant) and will be out of town three weeks between now and then, so it will fly by! I am so excited. I think now that it's a reality, my husband is concerned. I got the "If it makes you happy, it makes me happy" but I am not convinced. I know he is supportive of my decisions, but probably a bit insecure at the same time. food has always been a big part of our life and I have been slowly withdrawing from that over the last few months. Thanks for listening! I am so darn excited I just needed to share it with someone. I have told very few people. I will update after the surgery.

    Eating Plan???

I had my surgery 4-19-08; have lost 43 pounds; am struggling right now with keeping food down and same as you just seem to handle the chicken salad better than anything. Eggs come right back up no matter how they are cooked or made. I have a sinus infection right now, tons of drainage and we think that is what is making everything come right back up - not being gross - but mucus looks to be the main thing coming up in huge bulk amounts. Sorry to be gross. Also, I am battling an issue of needing root canal and the pain is awful, so the pain meds are not helpful to eating right. I am just stuck and so down mentally. My weight loss has been on stand-still mode and now these issues don't help. I love my smoothies more than anything but was told to get more food down as my body is in starvation mode. Anyone else going through anything like this?
  16. I had revision from sleeve to RNY on 12/17/19. I flew back home on the 23rd. I was either in the air or waiting in the airport for over 7 hours. I had no problems what so ever. I was exhausted by the time we actually got home. It was a long day. My biggest day of pain was the actual day of surgery. I had the surgery around 9AM and was up and walking later that afternoon. I was lucky in that I really had no gas pains and only took pain meds the first day. I was inpatient for 2 days and then discharged to a nearby hotel until we flew back home. I'm not a big fan of pain meds and I told my surgeon no need to write a prescription. I only took Tylenol as I needed it. I haven't taken anything since Christmas day. I'm not in any pain, but just feel uncomfortable in the tummy area. Good news is no more Reflux. I'm allowed pureed food now and everything has been great with the exception of sugar free Popsicle and refried beans. The fat free refried beans were the pits. They basically got stuck in my chest and hours after eating, I still feel uncomfortable. The doctor said that I would experience things like that and when I do I need to back away from that food and attempt to try it at a later date. Good luck on your procedure. I'm sure you are going to do well!

    Hungry!

I hear ya. I had a small unfill back in May or June? I still lost about 10 more lbs after the unfill but now I'm starving all the time. I think I'll go in in January for a small fill. I'm not gaining but this is like I was a year ago. I ate a small pizza last night. Not a hint of restriction. Gotta love these little detours eh? tmf

    When does the light shine

It gets better, but slowly. I am at week 10 and I still have struggles, but they are less and less. In the meantime, as the payoff for my struggles, I have lost 78 pounds. I can stand up without exhaustion and walk every day on my treadmill and people don't look at me like I'm an alien anymore. So it's worth it. Those people who say this is the "easy way out", just don't know. Keep on keeping on!
  19. I've said before that I'm not great with numbers so if I'm a bit off from previous posts, please forgive me. I'm not trying to revise history, just not that observant on numbers. But I'm just now starting my 2nd year in this life and thought I'd share the markers. In mid-October 2010 I started my pre-op diet. I think was was right about 326. Strict program requires loss prior to surgery. In mid-April I started my pre-diet liquid fast. I was at 309. I was 100% faithful and it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. 10 day fast and I ever skipped two packets. I think my mind was on the future by that time but I was also going a bit numb. I knew I had to do it so I sort of went into denial which worked for me. I was actually sleeved the last week of April 2011. As of today, I am at 235. That's a loss of 92 pounds. It's not tearing up the track. I've seen others who have lost tons more but that's the main reason for this post and something I want people to understand. You body, if you stay within reason and safety in eating, will lose. It just might pace itself differently than others so try not to judge yourself by others. I lost horribly when I was in the 400 calorie a day range. When I moved to the 800 calories, it wasn't much better. But now, in these past several months, with being able to take 1200 calories a day and having the energy and strenth to pick up more exercise (and with almost 100 pounds less stress on my knees) my weight loss has become steady and consistant. As I've added more calories, and 1200 is very reasonable to live with, I am not stopping weight loss. My surgeon preached that if you didn't lose in the first year in his program you were not going to lose with the sleeve. He was 100% wrong with me. This is now my new normal and the key to that is that I no longer fight it because I've accepted it as my normal. It's no longer something that was forced on me to save my health but something I'm thrilled to have done to have saved my life. It feels like I was born this way. I stopped counting every bit of food about 3 weeks ago. I just got sick of it. I concentrate on Protein and take a good multi every day as well as my Calcium. In that 3 weeks I have become far less obcessed with food. I think of it so much less, eat only when I am really hungry (and I do still experience hunger). But now I'm just a human being who has a small stomach. Most days I love it. It's a relief. I had had a bout of depression but I'm also going through menopause, lost 2 brothers (both under 60) and my Mom is now terminal and these things are the tip of the ice berg.. I have never turned to food in stress. My stomach actually gets tight and hard to eat so I don't think the sleeve contributed any to the depression. But I'm not being a hero and getting the depression treated so I'm thinking I'll be better by year end. And at least 10 pounds lighter. Oh, and one more thing. One year ago rolling my trash can to the end of the drive was a challenge. The last several days I've walked a 1/2 mile trail behind my house. And I have very bad knees. So plan for the best. It's right around the corner for you.

    Insurance denied

That happened to me twice in the last 4 years. Months of my time wasted and major expenses for my co pays, plus all the time I missed from work for all the appointments. Each time it happened, I switched insurance during open enrollment at work and started all over again with a brand new doctor. Third time was a charm. Found a doctor who knew how to advocate for me and got everything approved and my surgery will be Nov 1, 2017. Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app

9 Months and the Game is Changing

Sooo Im at like 7 months right now... I'm at a weight that's very comfortable for me so if I can slow my weight loss to about 5 lbs a month I'd be satisfied!!! My goal was 140--- Now I feel like 160 might be it for me... I'm 167 currently. I'm not concerned about slow weight loss. SO... I keep my routine going. I don't count calories AT ALL!!!!!! I'm more focused on food groups. I still have something light for breakfast- a fruit and veggie smoothie, or a Protein shake, or fruit and yogurt or Breakfast meat but I eat something preferably something with protein but sometimes I just want a smoothie. Grazing is life!!!!!! I bring or purchase a grazebox at work so my Snacks are already ready to go. My grazebox usually contains 4 items it could be 8 cheese cubes, 10 cucumber slices , 15 grapes, and 1/4 cup of mixed nuts (cashews, almonds, pecans, peanuts) Its in a divided container so it fits perfectly. I have other combinations like cheese, apple slices, hummus and celery, or Nuts, pineapple, carrots and strawberries. Anyways I graze on this ALL DAY at work starting at about noon. My lunch is usually 1 item. Today it was 4 lemon pepper wing dings, Tomorrow it might be a mini garden salad with grilled chicken. It might be a leftover baked porkchop or lobstertail from last nights dinner. By 3 oclock I'm back snacking on my grazebox and I usually still have food left over by the end of the day. I take it home and add it to my grazebox for the next day. Sometimes I can easily skip lunch because the grazebox keeps me satisfied. Its all about what you are grazing on. I usually leave work about 430-5pm I have to pick kids up and stop by the store sometimes I snack on what remains of the grazebox or whatever was left from lunch but I don't typically eat after 6pm and I'm not hungry. Now 1-2 times per week I may eat out with the family, or join a friend for drinks but that is the only instance where I may really eat past 6 or 7pm. Sometimes I might just purchase food eat a few bites of salad and carryout the rest. Find what works for you... I personally see nothing wrong with grazing. Just watch the carbs and make sure your activity levels are where they should be. You know what that is... what works for you may not work for me and vice versa. I was going to the gym 4-5 days a week but I wasn't pushing myself so I started taking kickboxing classes, boot camp and classes that would push me to my physical limits.
  22. Commericals about food are so much...I used to love watching food network but now I can't the food just looks too good!! Plus I am cheating on the pre-op waiting to hear from my dr on that. Surgery date 02/10/09

    Stall

I am almost 6 weeks out. I have only lost 10 lbs, since week 2. I was having problems getting my protein and water in and I stayed costipated. I went to my support group on 811th. They told me what to do. I guess I am in a stall. It is depressing. I would love to lose faster. I am only on full liquids.
  24. I'm so happy for you...it's a life changing experience for sure! I'm in Pearland, 10 minutes south of Houston. Good luck...best advice I can give you: have a pillow in the car and put it over your stomach when you are being driven home. Keep the pillow on your stomach as much as you can...I slept with it and tucked it under my side so it supported my stomach because I'm a side sleeper and walk, walk, walk!
