  1. Helloooo! This is my first time on this forum and I'm very excited! I'm a little nervous because I've never had any kind of surgery before. I've been on the clear liquid diet for almost 2 weeks and I really hope this is the hardest part!! Every where I go I smell food... it's on the tv... it's in magazines... it's everywhere! I definitely find myself getting a little emotional, it feels like I'll never get to enjoy food again. And quite honestly, I really miss food right now. :rain: Couple of questions for anyone that's been banded for awhile.... :help: I heard that all beef and white bread are very difficult to digest... as well as carbonated beverages. Beef and bubbly drinks I can easily give up... but i looove bread... How about whole wheat or multi-grain type breads?? What about melted cheeses? What are some of your favorite foods to eat?? What do you do when you dine out? Do you ever drink alcohol?? Super duper hungry:nervous kayla

    Iodine stains

Mine came of by my 2nd shower with a soapy washcloth. I needed a little rubbing alcohol to get the residual adhesive off.
  4. Hello i just have a question about drinking alcohol after surgery? I dont drink beer so carbonation is not the problem just wondering about mied drinks and wine coolers? How long should i wait? I was banded June 12th.

    Alcohol After Surgery ???

In all my years of banding (just over 5 years) I've never seen this blanket recommendation to not consume alcohol. Empty calories? YES. But forbidden? NO. After 4 weeks or so, few Bandsters have absolute 'forbidden' items - including an occasional drink. Most long term and successful Bandsters I know can have a glass of wine or two with dinner (depending on your own individual tolerance and habits) with no problem. Do remember that with the band encouraging less food intake - this can mean that a smaller amount of alcohol can affect you faster, so I think with all things moderation is key. My friends who have lost 60-168# with the Band do drink now and again - and I know I clearly told my surgeon at my initial consults that I like a glass of wine (and an occasional and rare margarita) and he thought it was acceptable and might make the band a better choice than the RnY bypass (although my close friends with RnY can drink in moderation, too.) If I know I'm going to have a glass of wine once in a while, I cut my carbs elsewhere. It works for me. So it's all about what works for you. Happy Band Journeys To All...
  6. It is hard, I know. You didn't have your head banded, only your stomach and sometimes the head is stronger. Just think - you have had surgery and are healing. Do you want to stall or delay the healing process? I doubt you do. Try your hardest to stick to your eating plan. Foods you loved before, you still may be able to eat but just a lot less, which is great. As for alcohol, everyone has a different opinion, but mine is, I still drink it and love it and I'm okay with it (and so is my doctor). Now probably isn't the time for it though. You need to let your body heal and just give it the nutrients your doctor said to. Good luck!
  7. As said above, sleeve and bypass are just tools. If you were to consume too many calories through liquid calories like alcohol and soft drinks and lots of sweets both will fail to help you lose weight. You may or may not get dumping from bypass surgery. As sillykitty said above, you likely need to seek help for your sugar addiction with something like overeaters anonymous to help you succeed in beating your addiction.
  8. True, however they should maybe tone it down a little. Just like if I drank and the were an alcoholic I would go easy on them and not just drink everything that I can. Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App

    Hello

Hi all...had surgery tuesday and got home thursday evening. Everything went well and the doctor even fixed a hiatal hernia that I didn't know I had. Surgery was about 2hrs long. I have 5 incisions and 1 is really sore because they worked it a lot. It feels like alcohol being poured on an open wound so, I'm taking my Percocet routinely. I had 1/4 cup pudding and 1/4 cup cream of wheats today and it's hard getting my water in. It's after 8pm and I still need another 20 ounces to drink. I'm thinking I'll go with protein shakes tomorrow so I can get some nutrition with my liquids.

    Questioning Nutritionist Advice

What I’ve noticed from reading posts on this board is that nutritionalists offer a lot of conflicting advice. It can be confusing. I would tell my dietician if I disagreed with her advice or if it wasn’t something I could follow in my life & I’d ask for alternatives. What is your goal weight? Does your nutritionalist know what it is? What do they say to explain your lack of loss on the higher calorie diet? Sure, as you get closer to your goal your weight loss does slow but not losing any weight over 2.5 months at your weight sounds like maintenance to me. How active are you? Keto was my recommended 2.5 week pre surgery diet. My personal view is Keto is good for kickstarting your weight loss but not as a long term diet. There’s research about the risks from the high fat component of the diet & also that it can cause issues for diabetics with erratic insulin levels because of the low carb aspect. Just something to consider. I’m all for a balanced diet. I eat about 2 serves of carbs a day (rolled oats & multi grain crackers only not including naturally occurring carbs in other foods), 4 serves of fruit/vegetables, 2-3 serves of dairy, 60g protein & am low fat. I avoid added sugar & artificial sweeteners wherever I can & have a glass of alcohol about once a month. I will have a protein bar if my protein is a little low. My portion sizes are about 3/4 of the recommended serving size or I have fewer serves in a day (like 4 serves fruit/vegetables not the recommended 5). I was told my maintenance protein level was 1.2g per kg of body weight because of being a women in her 50s. I don’t take multi vitamins. This is working for me. It took me a while to discover out how much I could eat in maintenance & I kept slowly losing for 12 months. You will need to work out what works for you in relation to the point at which you can lose & the point at which you can maintain. It will be different to other people’s diets. You may be able to eat more carbs or may choose to go down the plant based protein route. You may need more or fewer calories. You also need to work out what food choices allow you to live your life - dining out, having a glass of wine, travelling (whatever that will be like), work, etc. It may be time for some straight talking with your nutritionalist about your goals & what is achievable for you & your lifestyle. Good luck.
  11. OK I am 33 I just had the sleeve done on 4/18/17. This is probably really stupid but during the summer my family gets together and we do like a weekend getaway where we BBQ camp and just have a good time. It's great I look forward to it every year the kids get to play with all their cusions and everyone has a good time. This year I'm nervous.... just having the surgery knowing there is going to be all this food. Not to mention we usually have a couple drinks around the fire... I don't know how alcohol is going to affect me and if it will be to soon to even have a drink. And I know my family... they understand why I did this but they are always saying... "here try this." "You can't starve yourself". I know I'm not but man what do I do
  12. I just made some of the basic chages early 2 months before surgery I gave up soda, alcohol, caffine, and straws. I also started eating sower and waiting 30minutes to eat. I ended up losing a little over 6 pounds
  13. Dear Kristy29; I know exactly what you are talking about. My husband was not supportive of me getting the Lap-Band either. We have been arguing back and forth for months about this. I am getting it so I can loose weight and become pregnant. So every time he is mad, he say.."so, we can't have a baby because you can't loose some weight?" Well....yeah, I guess so. So this last time we argued, I told him that he really need to stop or get out! I AM getting this Lap Band! And I AM going to loose this weight and become healthy. I tried to explain to him that me with food is like any other addict. You sit there with a bottle of Vodka and ask an alcoholic to drink it....he probably would. He needs help from people around him to stay away and make better choices. I told him that it is hard for me to stay away from food and desserts when he keeps baking and buying it. Yeah, I know that I have to change all of that, and I know that it is up to me. All I am saying is that it is hard...it is hard being addicted to food and feeling like you are always hungry. After our talk he said "okay, I will be supportive, anything you need"! So, last couple of weeks, he has been eating all of his goodies in the basement, and he doesn't tell me about it. And it is working for me! I just wanted him to understand that it is hard for me, just like it is hard for him to stop smoking!!!!!

----Wow@steak 15 days out -- only a dream for me My NUT told me that the sleeve really isn't healed for minimum of 4-6 weeks (she mentioned Peanut Butter (my fave) really gets stuck and shouldn't be tried until 6 weeks) I'm also instructed to avoid breads, rice, Pasta, red meats, fried foods and baked goods for minimum 6-12 months Not sure how long for alcohol but I assume at least 6 months too I'm afraid all these restrictions will force a really fast weightloss leading to to low a weight for my large frame --- I'll revisit some restrictions with her as time goes on I've already lost 15 pounds (currently 220-221) and I'm only 10 days out and on full liquids

    21 soon!

most doctors will say no to alcohol. I have to advise you to ask your doctor if you can have at least one drink for your 21st. I would recommend whatever drink you want but one that doesn't have carbonation. happy birthday to you.
  16. I actually had the dual challenge of not only not stress eating, but also stress drinking. I used to have a large (or 2 or 3) cocktails everyday after work. Most of my social activities involved drinking, too. I don't have a magic formula as to how I stopped, I just did. I still have shitty days at work and I still have emotional issues in my private life, I just don't drink or eat my way through them anymore. Surprisingly, learning how to celebrate the good things without food and alcohol was just as hard. I read Cynthia's book, too, and that did help get my head in the right place. And I realized after a few times of not drinking and binge eating when I wanted to that the world was not going to come crashing down. Dealing with life without my crutches has gotten easier as time goes on. And as for socializing, I still do eat and drink at parties, it's just in extreme moderation.

What to do with drunk drivers?

When I received my ABO card in Louisiana they made it very clear to me that you shouldn't serve someone who was obviously drunk. I was more speaking of people who serve or purchase alcohol for someone under 21. But now that you bring it up, bars should do more to encourage designated drivers. Like free cokes, Water, juice whatever. Being the DD sucks so bars that don't should really consider at least doing that for them.

What to do with drunk drivers?

Pearlygirl I do not believe that Alcoholism is a weakness of character. I thought that would be clear by the tone of my post that I believe alcoholism is a disease. I apologize if it was not clear. I would have preferred if you would have asked me to clarify my position before calling me ignorant.

    Drinking

So I just had one single 5% ABV hard cider that totally knocked me on my ass ????. I got sleeved 4 months ago and I keep forgetting how quickly a little bit of alcohol will affect me. Not to mention that, since I've dropped 50 pounds now, my tolerance is a lot lower. And the sleeve makes the alcohol get into my bloodstream so easily. It's nice to be a cheap date and avoid the extra calories I used to consume by drinking a lot, but it still surprises me sometimes. How does everyone else deal with drinking post-sleeve?

    Alcohol

I've found myself drinking more and more in the last year or so, sabotaging my weight loss. It has always been nice to have a beer now and again. The carbonation has never been a problem for me. But I have found that alcohol might be taking the place of food in my life. Has anyone else found this to be the case? One bad habit takes the place of another? How do you give up something that never seemed a problem before? I know this is the reason I am not losing weight. There's about 4000 calories a week (at least) in beer! Anyone else out there looking to get out of this trap?

    Alcohol

Thanks. I plugged in "alcohol" and got nothing. Searching thru the maze of forums and posts is not practical for me at the moment. Thanks again for the link.

    Feeling discouraged

Well, I don't know but alcohol does not increase my appetite at all. I haven't had any problems with my band either so I would say everybody's body is different. I don't drink often but I include it in my calorie count and I don't get hungry.
  25. I had the SADI-S on July 23, 2020, so I'm getting close to 2 years out. It was definitely the best thing I ever did. I was self pay because our insurance at the time didn't cover any wls. I have lost 200 pounds. I started at 393 (I'm 5'3") and I'm currently 193. I'm hoping to lose more. I'm losing very slowly now, but it's still coming off. The surgery was not bad, except for the first few days I had a lot of nausea. Lo and behold, our insurance now covers wls, including this one, so my husband is having it done on May 13th. They are giving him nausea meds pre-op, so I'm guessing quite a few people have had nausea with it like it did. There weren't very many people having it done when I did so they didn't know as much. I am so happy I chose the SADI-S. I feel amazing, and I have tolerated most foods. I do notice alcohol just doesn't seem to sit right in my stomach, but I've only had it a few times since surgery and I'm not a big drinker so it doesn't matter too much to me anyway. My life has changed completely in so many ways! It is late and I'm tired so I can't think of what else to write at the moment but I'll be glad to answer any questions you have!
