How are you getting 40 grams of carbs?
KimTriesRNY replied to QueenEB's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Some days I don’t get 40 carbs. I don’t stress about it. Some days I’m a bit over, usually if I have oatmeal for breakfast which is about once a week. Most of my carbs seem to come from my yogurt and things like beans that may be in soups I make. -
June Sleevers Lets Get Excited!!!

I, too, seem to be at a stand still but I have another question relating to this topic. I went to my 6 week post op appointment last week. My prescribed nutrition plan was liquids only for 2 weeks then soft food - at six weeks with the idea that protein shakes were no longer meals. So I did cottage cheese, yogurt, tuna fish, regular fish, - so far no problem with anything. Then back to normal food. I was explaining to my Nurse Practitioner that I had joined Weight Watchers as a tool to keep me accountable to someone! And she said absolutely no to that idea because Weight Watchers expects you to eat way more than you should be eating! Now, granted, I was still eating less than the usual 23 points because I was still recovering from surgery but then she said - "You should still be eating from the little one ounce cups - like 3 ounces of food at a time." I haven't done that since the 6 weeks was over! I mean, I can eyeball the food and if I get full, I stop eating right away and save the rest for another meal. But I haven't had any problems with any foods and I feel fine. I had some stricture a week ago (feeling like food was stuck in my throat) and she said that many people get that at 6 weeks and just to keep an eye on it and let her know if it continues. It could also be scar tissue from the surgery. Basically, I feel like I never even had the surgery and I'm back to normal. I do get full fast and I do try and keep up with the protein and fluid. But I'm wondering why the NP was still promoting the little cups - I feel like I'm doing something wrong! -
Struggling with soft foods

It appears that nothing you eat is appetizing. Eggs. Just the word makes me uneasy. Applesauce, cottage cheese. Ho-hum. I tried some tuna. Ate a small amount. I have a lot of salmon filets, but the smell is such a turn off. Most anything out of a can is blaghh. I can handle yogurt, too, but really... I can't just keep having yogurt. How are you able to meet your protein and fluid requirements? I know you said by shakes, but how are you able to keep them down? Two drinks and I'm done. I have an appointment with my doctor today. I plan to talk about my poor protein/fluid intake. The horrible cramping in my right leg. How did this post turn into a rambling on about myself?! I hesitate to say that your concern is psychological. When it comes to women, the first thing that mostly male health professionals seem to conclude is that it's all in our heads. We've even conditioned ourselves to believe that we're probably screwy in the head somehow. When is your next doctor appointment? Is your bariatric team receptive to patient concerns or are you treated like an inconvenience? I sometimes dread calling because the reception staff up front (aka the gatekeepers) want to know why I'm calling, yet they don't know squat about even basic medical terminology. Go figure. -
Chicken pureed with a tiny bit of mayo or Greek yogurt and different seasonings (curry powder is great), same with salmon/tuna/crab, cottage cheese with some sugar free jam, refried beans with a little taco seasoning and salsa, cream soups with added protein powder. Check out http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html for some more pureed ideas.

For those who have lost weight- how does it feel to be thin?
GotProlactinoma replied to Elle_Woods's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It feels unbelievable. I still CANNOT BELIEVE I could go into any shop in the mall and find something that fits. When I could buy at LuluLemon I think I head tears in my eyes. They only go up to a 12. I’m not crazy about shopping but I CAN buy regular clothes. The biggest thrill for me clothes wise is I AM WEARING CUT OFF JEANS and I look normal. I’m not thin, I’m normal. I can ice skate or run along the beach with my child. WHAT?? And I don’t look ridiculous. And I love just playing and running and whatever. I jump on a scooter and go ride with the kids. Unbelievable. It feels so good. I have a new relationship with food. My breakfast is always the same and always with the eggs as protein. I need it. It just IS. My food is fuel, also mid day I need that protein powder still, which I add to full fat plain Greek yogurt, maybe throw a couple berries and some flax seed in, take it in my lunch. So the first half of the work day, food is just fuel based on the protein I will need. Dinner is protein and veggies, pretty utilitarian, but I get into cooking as I always have, and it might be any kind of ethnic taste. And my dessert or late night snack is always either my homemade seed based granola with raw milk, eaten out of a tiny snack container so the amount is always the same, or my beloved 92% dark chocolate which is not candy, it’s not even as sweet as fruit. It is just a fatty, healthy, antioxidant snack. But to me it’s chocolate and yummy because I don’t eat anything sweet any more. please believe me cause it’s true: I hope every day that I will get my workout in. 4-5 days in the week, I do. I care for my mom and kids so there are times I don’t. I actually really want to do it now. I never thought this would be me. ‘So the obsession is positive, if that makes any sense. Instead of being worried or concerned or guilty about my eating or working out, it’s just part of my life now fo real. And it seems weird. I hope I can stay like this forever. It’s only the end of year one. -
Quick recap- I had the sleeve on 2/5/2014 and had tons of complications. I was in the hospital a lot, I had a PICC line and then a feeding tube. It was a rough 6 months. My stomach basically didn’t tolerate food or drink, so there was a lot of puking. Fast forward to needing a revision to bypass on 6/26/2018 due to severe reflux and damage. The surgery went great, I healed well, no nausea. I was rocking it. I am doing great on full liquids but am failing miserably on soft foods. I don’t know if it’s psychological or what. I can do one cheese stick a day if I chew very well. I am okay with yogurt, just small amounts. I get sick on refried beans, cottage cheese, eggs, etc. I just keep going back to full liquids. Anyone else? Any advice?

I need help diet and exercise
Diana_in_Philly replied to lapbanddon's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Break up the portions and timing make it 5-6 meals rather than 3. Chicken and fish are high protein - but do 3 ounces of chicken and maybe a bit of something green - small salad, asparagus, string beans. Oikos Triple Zero yogurt has 15 grams of protein and makes a great snack at 130 calories. Cheese. I live on meat and cheese. Up your fluids, too - drink more water. Shoot for 80 grams of protein a day. -
Honestly, I think the pre-op diet is mostly there to switch us from one way of eating (excess, pizza, burgers, milkshakes, everything is permitted) to another (protein shakes, cottage cheese, sugar free greek yogurt, nothing else in the whole world.) THEN, once we've had the surgery, the surgery more or less tells us when to back off of our augmented digestive systems and our newer habits feature a fridge full of powerade zero and premier protein shakes. It's like, first we replace the bullets with blanks, then we limit the cartridge capacity to a 1/4 of a bullet. Sent from my SM-N950U using BariatricPal mobile app

90% of the time, yeah. Apples and cheese, celery and Peanut Butter, berries or peaches on yogurt, melon with nuts and cottage cheese or ricotta. When I don’t it’s because I’m running (literally, like 6+ miles, I don’t do it with shorter runs) and it’s quick fuel. During the loss phase I didn’t eat fruit at all unless it was when I was running. I mean veggies if they are low carb ones (ie not potatoes, corn or peas) then it’s not as big a deal, because they have a low glycemic index and Fiber (I do net carbs not total carbs so subtract the fiber) so like at a party I will sometimes snack on raw veggies. -
Cream of wheat thinned down with skim or 1% milk Cream of rice with same Grits Greek non fruit yogurt

Got it! I have Yogurt as a snack and cottage cheese on week 4 yet oatmeal right away. But the oatmeal is blended and watered down with almond milk so it's like a soup. It's so strange to read all the different courses doctors have asked us to follow :).

I found a protein shake on Amazon that has 40 grams of protein in each carton
BajanSleeve replied to apositivelife4me's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I mix a 64 oz bottle with my drink at the beginning of the day and put 3 scoops of protein powder in it which is 60 grams. I use the unflavoured protein powder. I also add a pack of powdered vitamins into the mix and then shake it all up very well. Sometimes the protein powder can develop into little tiny 'bits' but I don't really mind that. I make sure I drink the whole thing by the end of the day and then I add more unflavoured protein powder into my tea, or soup and even in yogurt. Unflavoured protein powder is ma best friend! They sell unflavoured protein powder on this website. The one I have found in Barbados is the Designer Whey unflavored -
My surgery is August 31st! So scared and hope Im choosing the right surgeon and procedure. I’m a low BMI (30) with years and years of Yo-yo dieting and pre diabetes. Ive weighed as much as 229 down to 128. Its insane! Anyone going to Dr. Ponce at INT around the end of august first of September? My pre op diet is yogurt and water for 3 days. Does that sound normal?

sick from pre-op diet

Do you have any known food allergies? Peanuts? Are you lactose intolerant? There are non-dairy protein sources. When I was able to tolerant my protein replacement shakes (which was only during the post-op period), I preferred goat whey. After surgery, I can't stand my protein powder without some trickery (mixing unflavored protein powder with Greek yogurt. I can't even detect the powder in the yogurt.) What protein powder are you using? -
Wow Im so happy I found this forum and topic!! Im a 30 BMI 5’ 3 170 and have dieted since I was 12. A few years ago I reached my highest weight ever of 229 but that was pregnant. my skin has been stretched out terrible. I lost 70lbs after losing the baby weight of 29lbs. So I got down to 130. But of course Im back up again. My pre diabetes keeps coming and going depending on my current weight. I honestly can’t handle it anymore. I eat 80 percent paleo not sugar or breads. No soda. I mean CLEAN!! But the scale keeps creeping up. I can’t work out like I use to do some health issues and joint pain. I don’t dare tell anyone because of the shame I feel about getting this done. I wanted to be a health coach and now Im having surgery. Its hard to explain. No one knows but my husband. So I have you guys to talk too. Im headed to Mexico next month to have surgery with Dr. Ponce at INT. Any advice on pre op and post op would be most appreciated. Im afraid of getting hypoglycemia after surgery. Also will I be able to work out hard like running and stay hydrated down the road? Im worried about throwing up and having acid reflex the rest of my life and regretting my decision. My doctor wants me to do 3 days before surgery of just yogurt and water. Is that really necessary? Also 10 days liquids. That freaks me out!!

The amount I eat changes from day to do is my problem. Some days I can’t finish a 5oz yogurt. Other days I can eat a whole chicken breast. Why? Who knows. Could be related to my activity level... maybe when I run more? I should try and notice a pattern but I’m not much motivated too when I have a fifteen year old to eat my leftovers -

Yes ,I don't tolerate bovine products well (not lactose intolerance) so I have to pick and choose which items I will suffer for. Life long struggle. Generally yogurt, kefir and some cheeses are OK but milk and meat are a no go for me. I live near farms so ive tried farm fresh as well. Sometimes I'm OK with half and half and isolates, but I have to cycle those out with vegan sub's. One of the reasons I was a vegetarian for so long. My body is just built for it. As for the almond milk, I don't need it for the protein, I get that from food, and there aren't many carbs in it either. Attached is the label -

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies: POST-OP Discussion
insta_adventurer replied to Ylime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had my post op appointment today. They said everything was great! I have some weirdness from having a surgery like toe numbness- but they didn’t think it was from this surgery specifically and may be from laying on the table weird or whatever. They prescribed some b1 vitamins in case it is due to a vitamin deficiency. I am down 17lbs since day of surgery, 29lbs down from when I got home from the hospital. Has anyone else not been given a goal weight? I forgot to ask if they had one for me. Personal goal would be 170lbs (which is probably still overweight for my height!). I can have cottage cheese, yogurt, ricotta, and eggs starting tomorrow. I just made up some egg salad and had a teeny taste and can’t wait for my teeny tiny teaspoon of it tomorrow!!! 😬😬😬 -
I am one week post op tomorrow. My experience is similar: 1. Walking is what got me feeling better. I can also tell that it helps with digestion. 2. I have had some constipation as well but was lucky enough to read that ahead of time so I made sure to have a stool softener on hand. 3. Burping was very bad on post op days one and two. Days 3 and 4 was gas rumbling in my stomach with was somewhat relieved with Gas X. Days 5 and 6 I have some burping and minimal gas. 4. I haven't felt full on hunger yet. I've tried to stay ahead of the curve. But that doesn't mean I still don't crave everything else. I wanted to slap my husband for eating the pizza I ordered for him and my daughter for dinner. lol 5. I am able to tolerate liquids very well and am able to keep down all meds and vitamins. I haven't thrown up. 6. I've experience sleep changes. It takes me a lot longer to fall asleep than it used to. 7. I am healing nicely but have one spot that is bigger than the rest and much sorer than the others. I have trouble sleeping on my side due to the uncomfortable way it makes me feel. I am set for my post op visit tomorrow and hope to be cleared for the next diet phase yogurt, cottage cheese, pureed foods. Sounds like you are on the up and up as well! Congrats!!!

Just wanted to say hello and that this has been one of the most challenging things for me. At this point I'm sipping on fluids, soups in protein shakes every 15 minutes. It hurts a little sometimes a little bit more going down in my chest area. Trying to incorporate that applesauce and plain yogurt since last night. Hope all is well for everyone on this journey. The importance of taking Calcium supplements
mhysteik posted a topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I had the Gastric bypass and I am out 7 years from surgery. I always took my multivitamin supplement and later found out how important it was to get in my iron supplement as I had a hard time getting it back in the normal range. I always took a calcium supplement as well but was only taking in approximately 500 to 1000 on average. However, I learned how difficult it was getting my iron levels in the normal range and was having to take additional iron supplements and it took approximately 1 1/2 years to just get it in the normal range, and 2 years to get it to the 50 level, a level that is much better where you are not groogy all the time and functioning much better. So in the process of getting the iron normal I found myself not taking my calcium regularly (at least 1000 per day) because you need to keep the iron and calcium 4 hours apart. Well the iron supplements I was taking was at least 3 times a day and having to spread the calcium between them was difficult, not too mention I was also taking thyroid medicine which has to be at least 2-4 hours difference from calcium or iron. So I was willy nilly with my calcium supplements, however, I know I was getting in at least 500mg calcium perday. Thinking it would work because I am a big fan of greek yogurt, cheese, kefir, and milk. The upshot is this I am now Diagnosed with Osteoporosis now. Now I am making sure I get 1500 to 2000 mg of calcium per day. I take my iron with my multivitamin 2 times a day plus a add a supplement of iron as well when taking the vitamin. My point here is that it is very important to make sure you take all your supplements if you have had the Gastric bypass and figure a way to get them in. Do not skip them. I am giving this advice from my own experience and trying to save someone else before its to late. Its hard to reverse osteoporosis, the =best cure is prevention.
