    Food Before and After Photos

    I thought I was the only one who turned into a ravenous hungry bear during that time of the month! I allow myself to eat more and I do not feel bad about it. I eat more protein and nut butters by the spoonful. I also workout a lot so I don't care. If a lady wants to eat then i shall eat. 😂

    January 2025 Surgery Buddies!

    My surgery was on the 16th Jan, I have not been losing quickly either, only lost 8kg since surgery. I also had a long time with no loss at all. I spoke to my surgeon at one month, he wasn't worried, he said it's quite OK to lose slowly, in fact it's good. He said it is because my body has been triggered into starvation survival mode, I know I am retaining water. Very frustrating for us slow losers I know, but quite ok, we have to learn to trust the process, so long as you're getting your protein and water as priority. I did get things moving again by eating more, pushed my intake to over 900 cals a day for a few days and this did work for me. I now eat around 800 cals a day, and slow and steady loss of about 1 kg a week for the last few weeks. Things to look at might be bowel movements? Maybe try eating more, Good luck and let us know how you go!

    All protein is now gross

    I hear you about the shakes. I found them sweet too and also very grainy so texturally off putting. I used to dilute the shakes to try to reduce the sweetness and had only one a day. Shakes aren’t your only source of protein if you’re still in the liquid stage. Bone broths, consommés, cream soups can all be eaten/drunk during this stage. I found the bone broths salty so drank cream soups ( just strain them to make sure there are no stray fibres or random chunks). I agree with @summerseeker’s suggestion to make your own shakes with milk, yoghurt, protein powder, skim milk powder and an unsweetened powdered flavour if you wish. You will likely find this sensitivity to certain flavours, textures and even smells continues for a couple of months. Your tummy can be pretty fussy. I described mine as a petulant, temper throwing 2 year old child. You may find you tolerate something one day but not the next. It does pass so don’t think you’ll never be able to eat those foods ever again. Multi vitamins can make you nauseous too. Make sure you take them after you’ve eaten or with the last few sips of your shake, broth, etc. Also if you have to take multiple vitamins spread out across the day when you take them. I’d take one multi in the am and the other in the pm to reduce the effects of the nausea. Also have you tried taking an anti nausea med to get you through this period. Your liquid stage will soon be over and then you’ll be on purées and that can be another interesting experience in finding something you can tolerate eating. It does get better and easier.

    Weight stabilizing so quick?

    Just want to let people know I finally broke this horrible 2-3 months stall. I was so desperate and nutritionist said my weight was stabilizing and ask me to add starch…. It made it worse. So what did was cut going to the gym from 3-4 hours a week to 2 hour a week. Exercise too much also made me hungry all the time. Then I also went back to basic and have only protein and slowly adding vegetables and fruit. I dropped 10 lbs in 2 week. Today I am no longer in the obese category and now have BMI 29.9. I am just so very excited.

    Almost time...

    So I am a USNavy Veteran. I am getting help through the VA Hospital. They don't offer injections for weight loss help due to the need for those medications to go to Diabetic patients which is what they were made for initially. So not having a larger BMI, the only option available to patients like me is the bariatric balloon. They do not do lap band or anything else similar here in the United States anymore with the VA health system. They offer gastric sleeve/bypass to patients with higher BMI- they said if I was just 10lbs heavier when I was referred to the specialist, they would have approved it 😕 which made me a little upset- if my primary would have known....maybe I would have waited for those extra 10lbs ? Well, any who- I am willing to try what's available to me- so Gastric Balloon it is So they will insert surgically a balloon filled with blue dyed saline solution. Basically, a breast implant in my stomach this will take up a majority of the stomach space- leading to feeling full and staying full feeling for longer. Basically, it is like the injection medications results, but not needing the injections monthly.
  8. I had a pretty nasty bout of blood in my stool which put me in the emergency room- I had lost a lot of blood. When the finally got the endoscopy done two days later- no active bleed. But it was depressing to say the least, and I'm no youngster at 70 years. So, I decided to stop alcohol. I've done it before- I was sober for about 35 years before I resumed drinking and went from 1-100 pretty fast. I know I'm an addictive personality, I found a program- outpatient intensive that will accept me-the real trick with this is what is called "after-care." I was never much for AA, but found groups where people can give feedback or respond to be extremely helpful. That will happen as p/o this program but it is short term and I've asked about aftercare options following the "intensive." I think my life will be better without the booze- it certainly was most of my adult life-- I got careless, figured WTF, and wanted something to calm me down. I don't like pot, it makes me paranoid. I used to drink tons of fizzy water. Can't really do carbonated drinks post surgery , I do stay hydrated and use sugar free electrolyte powder in my thermos. (Doesn't everybody have a thermos these days that they carry around? Sure seems like it). Anyway, the best path for me is the simple- abstinence and getting back to a mentality where a drink is out of the question. I gather than gastric bypass patients may be prone to shifting addictions but I already knew this was an issue for me before the surgery. Still working out at the gym-a life saver and seeing a "shrink" have both also helped, as has my internist. I'm hardly a moralist about this- if you can handle drink, fine. It's obvious that I'm in that cohort that cannot. Thanks for listening and for the feedback here. Happy this year to all.

    More liquid salad. (Zuppa tuscana with zucchini added). And my meals for today. I also had some broccoli cheese soup and a special k protein bar for lunch at work. I’ll have rest of the broccoli soup and salad for dinner when I get home.

    Fooood help

    I don't know all the brands you have in the US but I have used BFree gluten free high protein wraps. Each wrap is only 3.5g carbs and 11g protein but you'll only manage small portions of each wrap so the carbs from the wrap itself will be negligible.

    Overwhelmed by Worry

    I never look at the scale at home. The only time I get weighed is at a doctor's and periodically, at my gym, where they use one of those impedance machines that distinguishes fat, muscle and skeletal mass. Instead of worrying, just stick to whatever program you are following---my appetite was severely diminished after surgery, I had one instance of the foamies early on, and I learned pretty quickly that eating the wrong food or too much to fast led to gastro-distress. I don't know how much exercise you are getting. That has been a big factor for me. I work with a trainer, and it isn't just building muscle, but a lot of attention was paid to balance-- Learning how to breathe is something I'm still working on- sounds stupid but makes a huge difference in your stamina. Walk. A lot. I wasn't a food junkie but like to eat. I'm now constrained, but the trade-offs are worth it. Give it time. If you are persistent and consistent, you will be rewarded--- I slug down a 30 G protein drink, work out, hit another 30 G protein drink, a light lunch, a dinner primarily of protein and veggies. There's a certain amount of positive reinforcement that comes from success. But you should not measure your success by the scale or any other external measure. Overall, I feel better, am far more ambulatory and that alone allows me to capitalize on the surgery--and that's where the self-reinforcement comes in. I would have been out of breath after a couple of blocks walk. Now, I can go miles and feel good while doing it.
  12. Not that familiar with the switch surgery but I presume it would be the same for all surgeries in that after the surgery there is a new "standard" to meal sizes. If you went back to eating what would be a normal size meal pre-op you would probably make yourself ill and uncomfortable as you can't fit the food in. I am almost a year and a half out (sleeve) and if I had to have a sandwich I would have half per meal but I am trying to stay away from bread/pasta/rice as much as possible as they take up space in my smaller stomach that should have proteins as the priority. I was in the US recently and was happy to see that Pret did half portions so I just got their one half chicken and avocado to have when on the go. For me I still find that for breakfast a yogurt, for lunch and dinner 150ml/3oz of food with a small snack a while later is sufficient for me main meal wise. I think have protein drink or bar as snacks if needed. When eating out I usually just have a starter and would not always finish. If ordering a main course I usually manage 1/3, or 1/2 if it is a small one, and bring the rest home.
  13. I am definitely a salty-crunchy craver. So far that still seems legit, I think about my deluxe nuts and stove popped popcorn, but that thought/craving may pass since it'll be sometime before I can test it out. As someone who hasn't eaten meat for years, and still find the thought unappealing, I'm interested if I'll wake up one day like... "Oh, I could go for a steak 🤣" As for the Vanilla shakes, yes, I've been mixing them in my coffee as well as with my Protein Powder and I've been enjoying PB2 for years... still tastes Amazing... though I miss putting a little granola in it (maybe that'll pass too (shrug), But hey it's the Protein Boost and I'm happy for it.

    Bathroom issues

    So I had the Sadie, I have gas every day because the sugar alcohols in my protein drinks give me gas. I will also get gas if I eat Suda for a vegetables, high fats or simple carbs. The gas I really can’t control. It gets pretty abundant and I can’t always get to another room before it comes out. But go into the bathroom you can completely control. It’s not some sudden urge where you gotta go right now. If you’re not eating a boatload of sugars and fats you’re not gonna get diarrhea. You’re gonna have normal bowel movements and you can control them just the same way you did before bariatric surgery. Now they do sell tablets that you can take. It is a form of a business that deodorizes your body from the inside so that your gas is not as bad as it normally would be. It takes you back to pre-surgery gas smell. They also sell odor blocking underwear. But if you don’t take the proper steps, just know that the flatulence from the Sadie is a lot and it smells pretty bad, but if you take care of it preemptively you’ll be OK.
  15. Have a look at Dr Matthew Weiner’s Pound of Cure website and podcasts. He has excellent information, books (incl the metabolic reset diet) and online nutrition classes you can sign up for. They also have support groups you may find helpful too. Personally, I wouldn’t go back to the pre surgical shake diet. (I’m with you, those shakes are disgusting.) Instead go back to how you were eating once your weight initially stabilised. That calorie load was appropriate for the weight you were so will be a deficit for what you are consuming now therefore weight loss will occur Focus of your protein goals eating protein first then vegetables and finally any complex carbs as you are able. Ensure you’re getting your fluids in. Aim for lowish carbs, low sugar (real, artificial or alternatives), lower fats & add a little fruit. Check your portions, try to eat regularly & watch snacking. Track your intake even from now so you can see where you may need to make adjustments. You can start slowly by focussing on one modifying one or two aspect s at a time then two or so weeks later add another change.
  16. Update…I started taking my omeprazole twice a day instead of just in the morning and it absolutely made a difference in how “hungry” I felt. It definitely makes me wonder how long I’ve been interpreting GERD as hunger and just trying to feel myself for it to go away. It’s probably a big factor in what got me in this position in the first place. Also, today I was advanced to the soft phase and I got to have a 1-2 tbsp meal of cottage cheese and an egg with Italian herbs. I’ve missed savory so much. It was beyond satisfying

    I’m 5 years out. I take a docusate at bedtime twice a week. Just enough to keep things regular with my high protein diet.

    November 2023 buddies

    I'm sorry I haven't replied until now. Just got on here yesterday and wasn't on my computer so couldn't see everything well. My life has been so so busy since I first came on here! I had 14 dietitian appointments and other visits while working extra to help my clients get ready for Christmas then surgery was on Dec. 2. So just been crazy. Just now on regular foods. Having trouble with liquids and protein myself. Making tuna salad meal prepping this evening for tonight and tomorrow. Tuna and eggs helps. And I'm getting better at drinking all day but wasn't before and was struggling a lot. I always drank a lot when I ate food so this is a whole new world for me. And also I've noticed my tastes have changed so much! Have yours?

    @Hiddenroses you may want to double check about the peas. They were specifically mentioned no peas or corn in my book for the purée stage. I think it has to do with the shell. Also, I didn’t ask this time so research may have changed but when I got the sleeve 3.5 Years ago I asked about the collagen and was told it was fine to take it but not to count the protein towards my goal because they really didn’t have enough information to prove that The protein content was accurate.

    Help!! Too low body fat percentage

    Have you tried smoothies? I find even with my restriction, I can down 500-600 calories in smoothie form, vs maybe 300-400 cals of most other things before I'm full. You can load it up with fruit, peanut butter, protein powder, etc. to suit your tastes.

    @Hiddenroses that GENEPRO is the one I was asking about. I have it and mixed it in pudding and I couldn’t taste it but I wasn’t sure how to mix into hot things. You say to mix with water first, huh? It’s a tiny scoop compared to most powdered protein so one scoop is not really as much as your thinking I bet. When we get to more normal portions we may be able to add more than one scoop even but I’m not sure about how much it would change the texture. Has everyone else discovered protein waters yet. They were obviously handy in the liquid stage and full liquids when you get sick of shakes but even now in purée they are good since we are not consuming enough food to get all of our protein. I try to have a drink after each meal and they are 20g protein so that combined witb the 5-10g I get in my 1/4 cup serving is pretty much 30 average per meal (my breakfast shake in my profeee is 30 by itself. My goal is 72-108g so around 90 is good I figured.

    I am considered Normal BMI!

    @AmberFL In all your exercising have you found that your arms are firming up, if they were flabby before? Just looking for some tips as they remain a problem area for me and doing arm weights at home (mix between 1.5kg and 3kg) a few days a week for some reps doesn't seem to be making any inroads. My legs are always going to be a problem area for me because of lymphedema but that just stops me wearing shorts or a short dress leaving me still with plenty of options but having to keep my arms covered all the time (because I hate my arms) is a pain.

    Yes, please don’t be embarrassed to talk to your team. They understand onesity is complex. When I finally went back to my team I weighed more than when i started out before my sleeve and they did nothing but want to help me figure out a plan. For me the only option really was revision but you get to avoid that if you make the steps now. I know you can do this. Just take ONE step today. Even if it’s just setting a reminder to call the Dr. tomorrow.

    Well, I got the phone call. I arrive at the hospital at 5:30 tomorrow morning. It feels surreal. My plan for more protein today is going better, but it's still a rough time. But by this time tomorrow, it will have all been worth it. @Onemealplan Owyn protein shakes are actually part of my regimen (not currently because clear liquids). I've been drinking them for a couple of months now. I do like them, just wish there was more variety in flavors. I do wish I could handle the Premier protein as they have a lot of flavors to vary my diet with. ETA: @Pepper_No_Salt I hope you're doing well! Sounds like we are still surgery twins, based on what you said about the pre-op diet. ❤️
