  1. hi. i was pretty il in the hospital and had that nasty test done. lol. Including pic for exact wording of test i had. you drink really putrid cup of yuck. They have you standing against this thing which turns out that it lifts you in air and goes in different laying positions etc. then when its done it returns you to standing, It was very unpleasant. Very. On mine it said i had an ileus which meant something was still sleeping or something like that. I had my surgery on aug 28. I was in hospital for 4 days and the nurse wanted to stay longer because of ileus. but the surgeon said it was cool to go home so i went with that and am sleeping in my own bed. I did alot of regurging shakes and weird noises were coming from my pouch while trying shakes. once on puree this got so much better mainly because right now i am not drinking shakes. i know i am below all my protein and water goal but i try everyday as a new day. i plan to try to get my protein mostly from foods. i am hoping my pouch will get up to 3 oz so i can eat 3 eggs which is 21g protein and that would help. i thought about getting some unflavored protein (genepro etc) and using it. If it is a shake allergy of whey try premier protein its milk protein. There are other options out there. good luck at the test it made me so much more nauseas. just try to hang in there and dont give up 👯‍♂️

    Cravings- pureed food

I had my band removed in May, then had RNY on 09/24. My favorite thing to eat right now is sugar free jello cheesecake pudding. I make it with Fairlife Milk and add two scoops of GenePro!

2 weeks after sleeve need advice

get unflavored protein and add it to your food. Genepro is a good one.

What is the best unflavored protein?

I like Genepro also, because it's not like a 1/4 cup serving to get the protein in, it's a tablespoon for one serving. Hands down the best unflavored... pricey, but hey, it's worth it.

What is the best unflavored protein?

GENEPRO.... is oderless and tasteless and does not clump. You can add it to hot or cold....or just sprinkle over your food. One tablespoon equals a scoop of whey and has 30 grams of Protein. It is approved by John Hopkins and has 96% absorbtion. You can also order it from Amazon. I fix a Crystal Light Lemonade (others are too sweet for me) and sip on it all day at my desk!!! You can order samples from their site at http://www.musclegen.net/ . Just click shop and it is listed as "Genepro Sample Pack". You get two 1TB pouches which are 30g of protein each. They are currently $2.00 each pack plus shipping. Had my blood work done in October and I am right on target with my protein.

    Protein Shakes Preop

Pre-surgery I liked most of the powders, Quest has some good flavors. I mixed them with almond milk and ice and whizzed them in the Ninja. It was like an ice milk shake. Post surgery I am struggling with all of them. I have tried 10 different kinds, pre-made and powders. They are all so sweet and fake tasting and have a terrible aftertaste. And they are upsetting my stomach. I ordered GENEPRO today, they is some controversy around it but I have got to find something I can handle.
  7. I'm a vegetarian also, and just started my soft stage. I definitely have to supplement the protein.. I do so with genepro protein. Dissolves in anything. I'm going to start soft tofu, blended legumes, eggs, fish, special k protein cereal softened with almond milk. I. Also going to try green smoothies with protein powder. Also veggie burgers if I chew them up real good. Also soft cheese

    Choosing a Protein

I am getting to the point where I truly believe if you asked 100 different surgeons, you would have 100 different answers to this question. Well, maybe more depending on whom you asked in the office! So, to answer your question, I would always say the safest route is to follow what the Surgeon recommended. I know this is kind of a cop out, but if you want to be in compliance, then I seriously would consider using what they tell you to use. I was directed to use only Unjury, or Isopure. I used both, they were fine, my guess is any other legit protein maker would have been fine as well. Legit being defined as one that has at least 20g of protein per serving, and is not filled with sugar. Also excluding Genepro here, I hate to even list that product in a post, but just in case someone tells you to use it. Search the forum if you want to know why. As for the vitamins, this is even more important than the protein when it comes to following your surgeon's guidelines. Obviously you will need higher doses of vitamins than non-bariatric users to make up for what you are missing. If you want to use a different brand than what your doctor recommends, just do a nutritional label check and make sure they have the same amounts of vitamins. Of course, not all vitamins are created equal either, even if they say they have the same Daily Value percentage. So, once again, especially in the beginning, stick to what the surgeon recommended. Congrats on your first steps in this journey. I wish you many successes in the future!!
  11. This stuff is great. They have "extra strength" versions of it so if your worried about protein, Muscle Milk will get you to where you want to be. I am 4 days post up and I got in 100 grams of protein yesterday. I drank two different Muscle Milks (one was the extra protein version), and I had 3/4 of a can of cream of chicken soup with 1tbsp of genepro non flavored protein powder. The rest of my day was water and vitamins. So far, so good! My favorite part of Muscle Milk is that it is available a lot of places. I can just grab one at Walgreens or 711 anytime! Hope that helps. Juicing

I usually try to get 1.5 servings of fruit per day and I always try to get some veggies in. Right now since I'm close to 7 weeks post-op revision to RNY, I am still keeping it in liquid form so I make a protein shake. I put a tablespoon of Genepro, baby spinach, 1/2 frozen banana, 4-6 strawberries (sometimes add plums and/or mango) with unsweetened almond milk (or lowfat kefir) and ice in a blender. Vegetables I've been either air frying zucchini or putting napa cabbage, spinach... Etc. in my broths.
  13. Has anyone tried the new Genepro, 3rd generation, sold in the orange canister? I was disappointed the old one (sold in white bags) is gone, as it was the only unflavored protein powder I couldn’t taste nor smell. Others make me nauseous. I read bad reviews of the new formula on Amazon so wanted to see if anyone here has experience with it. Thanks! Edit: upon reading the fine print, the new version has a larger scoop and only a third of the protein of the old version. Not just bad volume wise, but also nutritionally and pricewise. Looks like I will need to find the old version or use a different brand from now on.

    Favorite Flavorless Protein Powder?

Genepro just loss a law suit. They are comparing the products30 grams a serving to others 33.3 gram scoops. 1 tbsp has 14.3 grams in a tablespoon. Couldn't prove with science how 30 grams gets squeezed into 14.3 grams. So each scoop max would be 14.3 grams at the most. The products 14.3 grams may be as absorbing as well as 30 grams, I think not. That's why they got sued. Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using BariatricPal mobile app
  15. Do you know what happens when you start removing hydrogen atoms from a molecule? You completely change what a thing is. Start with hydrogen peroxide....remove one hydrogen and you get Water....remove two more hydrogens and you make oxygen. Or start with formaldehyde....remove two hydrogens and you have carbon monoxide. Now think of what happens when you take protein molecules and start stripping off hydrogen atoms. What's left is certainly not protein. Your body responds to hydrogen peroxide and water and oxygen in very very different ways. You can take in all the oxygen you want...it's still not water. I would speculate that eating a molecule that used to be protein but has had its hydrogen molecules removed so it no longer resembles protein in taste, odor or physical properties is not protein. He said it himself, they turn baseballs into golf balls. But when it comes down to it, a golf ball is not a baseball. Just like GENEPRO is not protein, at least as far as human biochemistry is concerned. They STILL have not provided any scientific evidence that our bodies can utilize this "stable molecular structure". A simple pre and post protein serum level study would at least start to settle the controversy. But apparently the company's marketing ploys are so successful they don't actually need PROOF.

    Genepro Users-check this out.

My doc has stated that my urine is flooded with protein on the second occasion she recommended I decrease my intake due to high ketones as well. We were testing due to extensive hair loss and they determined it was due to the anesthesia. I am also shocked that the Genepro has such a small serving size; but so far it seems to work well for me.

    Genepro Users-check this out.

I have used Genepro along with other protein powders since my surgery. I had my labs drawn at 6 months and my protein was excellent! I only get about 20 proteins with food since I cannot eat enough to get in 80 grams of protein. My way of thinking is if it wasn't working my protein levels would have been way low because I count it toward my daily protein intake. And I have had no hair loss or any other side effects. So for the me it WORKS! And I will continue the use of Genepro. And no I don't don't work for them nor am I paid by them. Just my experience.

Recovery time for intense workouts & Sex

There is no way around it, you will lose muscle mass. I know I lost quite a bit. There is just no way during the rapid weight loss phase to take in enough protein to keep the amount of muscle we fat guys needed just to move. The most important thing is to establish the new habits that will endure the rest of our lives (hopefully). After about 9 months, that is when I started seeing body shaping. My shoulders and arms and dare I say, my glutes, started to become more prominent. Barbells? I started those at 6 weeks. It was pitiful. 10lbs and I would literally be panting by the time I left. Luckily the gym I go to is predominately senior citizens and just a few younger people that are in shape. No one judges that I have ever noticed. There are the occasional meat heads, but other people opinions carry very little weight so I was fine ignoring them. Though I don't see them anymore. Like most meat heads, they always injure themselves doing stupid crap. I recommend finding a good whey protein powder. Don't care what it cost, as long as it is a good one. What is a good one you are probably wondering? A good protein powder is one that has about 25 grams of protein per scoop. And it can be whey isolate or concetrate, but pass on anything taurine, soy, egg, and casein. They are decent proteins, but if you want to have muscle gains, there is no disputing whey is king. Oh, and the most important thing is that it is a powder that you will actually use. There are some damned expensive powders out there that IMO taste like crap. I personally use Gold Standard. Very trusted name and fair price. Oh, don't even consider GenePro. It's is utter crap. I've said my mind about that stuff plenty so I won't go into it again. My caloric intake right now is 2000-2500 calories. My protein is 150 - 200 grams a day. Here is an example of my tracking that I do, it should give you plenty of info:

    Protein shakes... yuck.

I haven't done it with coffee yet, but found that it worked OK for broths and Soups if I used my blender and mixed the unflavored Protein (GENEPRO and others both work this way for me) with a small amount of lukewarm Water or milk, then mixed that with the hot liquid. I also find that while the taste doesn't change, the texture definitely does. I cannot stand the protein powders mixed with pudding/yogurt/drinks but it works OK in soups/broths for me.

    Diet During First 2 weeks

@California joe There is tons of information on the internet to help guide you. It seems that each doctor recommends slightly different to the next but its generally the same. Mine was liquids only for 2 weeks and then by 3 weeks I could add more things like milk, yogurt, blended vegetables in my soups, a teaspoon of peanut butter etc. I am still eating pureed only foods at 5 weeks post surgery. I cant tolerate whole meats yet only blended in soups and I can eat very little solids like pasta or rice, only about 4 spoon fulls. From what I gather you just test yourself as the weeks go on as to what your body likes and can tolerate. I can't tolerate eggs at all and they really hurt when I try to eat them. You will learn what you can eat by what your body will tell you within the guidelines of each week. Some people tend to stay in one phase for longer than others because that is what is working for them By week 2 you should be adding protein powders to your drinks. I use the unflavoured protein which mixes into any liquids - your tea, drink, soup, etc. The protein makes you feel more satisfied and gives you more energy. I posted the link to the protein powder I use. It does not change the flavor of your food or drink https://store.bariatricpal.com/products/genepro-medical-grade-protein-powder-2nd-generation

    Adventures with Unjury Unflavored

I bought some of the GENEPRO but I've read mixed reviews on it so I've been hesitant to open it up and try it. I had no idea that the hardest part of this so far would be drinking a silly protein shake!

    5 days post-op

Knox Gelatine - I add a packet of plain to every cup of broth, 8 more protein and no taste. Try consume, it's a clarified, high protein broth. Some ladies in the support group I found said they use Genepro. They add it to everything they drink, dissolves in hot or cold. Also, add 2 pits of Knox to the jello - gives extra protein and tones down the sweet. And like everyone else says, hang in there! Day 5 I hit my breaking point. Today I'm 9 days out and in a much better head space!
  23. Genepro has been sued, and lost for lying about their protein content, they didn't even bother to show up in court to defend themselves. A very shady and deceptive company. https://casetext.com/case/si03-inc-v-musclegen-research-inc
