How can I lose half my weight I am 52 years old I have arthritis I have COPD I have high blood pressure I have carpal tunnel and I get tired when I walk and it hurts to be heavy and I'm only 5 3 what can I do to get gastric bypass or anything to help me to eat less and don't cost me anything because I don't have any money all I have is a partnership health card from the government so help me and my daughter we weigh the same thing and we are the same height so what kind of help can we get to help us get our weight off so that I can be here for my grandchildren and she can be here for children their children I only two and three years old my last child 13 years old I want to be around from my family

    1. Fibro Queen

      Fibro Queen

Have you tried to get disability with the COPD? Don't know what the limits are. I have Fibro and many other illnesses and know the pain of walking. Chronic fatigue, chronic pain, diabetes and high blood pressure to include a few. I start with very mild yoga. Stretching mostly, and 5 minutes of walking. After a couple of weeks move up to another 5 minutes. Use a walker if you have to. I do. It helps with the knee pain. Takes the pressure off my back and knees both.

  4. I am 20 days post op. Yay! I notice I lost weight (expected) however because I can not lift weights, my arms are sort of hangy. I also haven't had the energy to actually work out, but I've been restless. I guess that's my body saying you should work out Cassy...right? I'm a bit nervous due to occasional lightheadedness which is due to dehydration. However, I feel I need to start working out now. I've never had any form of surgery until this Gastric Bypass, and honestly it threw me for a loop regarding my recovery. I've never felt so weak or helpless. Everyday I get better and feel better, but I have to do better with my water intake. My body is not use to not drinking water. I crave it, I just can't get it all in the way I want. I'm still on the pureed stage, but I don't think I'm doing this right. One day at a time right? :-\

    1. 120Cassy

      120Cassy

My doctor said wait 6 weeks before lifting. I also have a weaker upper body strength area, so its my problem area. I expect my arms to be loose and hangy before I get to tone, but I have a feeling that it may be an area I may consider getting skin surgery for.

    2. Fiskgyrl

      Fiskgyrl

Oh ok. That is something that keeps me from wls. Im trying to look at the bigger picture and focus on the health benefits. But I gotta be honest and say the fear of the loose skin haunts me. But I'm seeing that even if I somehow manage to lose weight without wls, I am still going to have a lot of loose skin. Thanks for sharing your progress

  5. Things haven't been going smoothly lately :( I have gained 5 lbs and undoubtedly it's my fault because I have not been going to the gym or being active at all. On top of inactivity, I have been eating snack foods like crackers, popcorn, pretzels and even a cookie here and there. I don't know what's gotten into me, I'm just not following my diet plan at all. I've been doing good while at work for lunch, breakfast and snack, but once I go home, it's like I never had the surgery. I hate that I've let myself fall off the wagon and as much as I want to jump back on, I'm struggling. How have those of you that have had the same issue come back? What motivates you now that the sleeve isn't screaming no?

    1. Berry78

      Berry78

I was sleeved a week before you... so howdy, surgery buddy!

I'm fond of rules. Rules that make sense, rules that point me in the right direction. Rules that I can live with.

Cheating my rules only cheats myself.

      My rules:

      1. Create a meal plan and follow it.

      2. Substitutions are permitted when necessary, like for like, or borrow from the next day. (This requires understanding nutrition and record keeping).

      3. I can have pizza 4 times a year. Cake and ice cream on birthdays, pie on Thanksgiving. Local treats on vacation. Cookies (my favorite) on my birthday.

The thing is, during our weight loss phase, we have precious few calories to "waste" on foods that have no nutrition. Perhaps once in maintenance you can find a spot for 200 calories worth of snack foods each day.. but you will need to count and measure it and make room. 200 calories is like 1 small cookie, and you need to walk 2 miles to burn it off. Is it worth it?

  6. They warned me that I may not lose any weight immediately after surgery and they were right.  I've stayed the same to the tenth of a pound.  I've got my protein in every day, done my exercise (actually more that recommended), and got most of my daily water in.  And I've eaten only those foods dictated.  So Frustrating!.  Any suggestions on how to break this plateau?

    1. Michelle'sgarden

      Michelle'sgarden

I feel you first I lost a couple of pounds then gained back more! I'm folllowing every thing the doctor said including walking, protein and fluids. I finally hid the scale because the reality is the scale isn't telling the whole story. I've had to replace my entire wardrobe- the clothes I wore in June at the end of our school year didn't fit when's i tried them on last week - two weeks after surgery ( I also lost 40 pounds pre surgery). I put on a size Xl outfit today and in June as wearing 3x! So ignore the scale and check out your clothes, also do you have more energy etc? Good luck!

    2. Apple1

      Apple1

I'm not sure how long post-op you are, but the first week you actually gain water weight from all the IV fluids. I lost that and more by the end of the second week. Then at 3.5 weeks I hit the famous 3 week stall...lol.. so yeah very normal for some people. If you get stressed by stalls weigh less often for sure. I weigh everyday and so I am used to the bouncing up and down and don't stress about it. As long as you know you are following your plan you will lose, stall, lose, rinse and repeat.

    3. Gen17

      Gen17

I didn't know about this three week stall but I am there right now. I agree that hiding the scale is a good idea. It's hard because I want to know my progress but my clothes are all loose. I already had to do one huge overhaul of my closet and more than half had to be donated!

I am looking forward to more exercise besides just walking. I heard that will help too!

  7. Six months post-op and 90 pounds lost! I'm so happy with the weight loss, but I still can't help wishing it was 100 pounds instead. ;) I still need to find time to do my measurements and take some photos though - I'm leaving for Hong Kong tomorrow morning, so am pretty busy cleaning and packing before I go.

    1. biginjapan

      biginjapan

Thanks everyone! I really am happy as I've never lost 90 pounds in one go before.

@Newme17: Hong Kong is just for a few days as a layover on my way home. I have 2 suitcases full of clothes that I am bringing back with me to give away or sell (I still have 5 more boxes of clothes though! - too bad I couldn't bring them all with me)

    2. Newme17

  8. One week down on my pre-op diet and already my weight loss has stalled. Not sure if that's normal or not.

    1. Armygalbonnie

      Armygalbonnie

I was stalled the entire 2 weeks during the pureed stage. Stalls happen. I'll be 3 months out on the 1st and I've been on a stall for 1/2 of the time. The scale is going down so I try not to let it frustrate me too much. The scale will move. Just give your body time.

    2. biginjapan

      biginjapan

Thanks everyone. I'm in pre-op, not post-op. My period started yesterday (2 days early) so I wonder if that also has something to do with it.

The first three days I lost weight, the next four I didn't. I'm at the beginning of my second week.

    3. Travelher

      Travelher

Yep, for sure...i always stall around my period.

@Newme17 I am spending most of time in running capris and tank tops lol, but they are so comfortable and I love that I can wear them now.

It's quite funny I'm in my hoodie at work under the a/c of course. I was thinking of putting braided extensions in my hair with a reddish color. Cause my hair is so gray on top. Then i was thinking a perm straightener with brownish highlights. I don't know. I know i need some dresses cause the old ones are draping under my feet and falling off.

    1. Apple1

      Apple1

It will pick up again just have patience. I know it is hard, but if you are on point with your eating and exercise it is just a normal stall. I have had a couple myself.

  11. Less than a week to go.  Blood tests and ECG today.  I'm almost at the target weight that my surgeon doubted I'd make pre-op (It gets me below the cut off for an extra charge the hospital makes), I'll beat it easily before surgery day.  Feeling nerves for the first time.

  16. I haven't been on in quite a while, so I thought I would check in.  My weight is down to 173, 7 pounds below goal.  I held at 175 for almost 2 months and randomly dropped 2 pounds a couple of weeks ago.  I had my year follow-up appointment, and my labs were perfect.  Once again, I know that this journey was one of the best decisions of my life, and that I never would have been successful had I not committed myself 100% to changing my relationship with food.  I still follow a keto way of eating and keep my carbs below 25g per day.  I wish everyone the best.  Happy holidays!

  17. Currently 50lbs from my goal weight and this by far has been the hardest journey of my life. I have been admitted into the hospital for severe Dehydration,  I have been well for a couple weeks an then BAM the last couple days back to feeling ruff... My gurd is controlled some times I dont need my heartburn meds other times I live on them. Im loosing slowly at this point but I consider that a blessing as I  have lost a lot very quickly in the beginning of my journey, I do want to feel better. I try foods that I would think would work well with my new stomach some times its a big fail 2 days ago it was avacado I hovered over the porcline god an prayed for releif as I sometimes dont understand, I often times crave carbs and Im trying to control my cravings but its so hard... My sugar tends to drop really low and that makes me very ill Im happy with my progress but often times think WTF did I do to myself, feeling down today as I just dont feel well at all :(

I'm not sure how to update on an ipad, but you could post the question in the website help thread. Be specific about the type of device you use. Hope this helps and welcome!

  20. So the doc wants another week before i try lifting again and then only light weights for another week after that.

i don't know how much of this slow healing process is me just being an old **** or if my post op diet is slowing things down or hell maybe Tricep tear just takes along time to heal.

I do know i dont want to do any damage to it again. Not being able to do much of anything with your right arm is a pain in the ass if your right handed.

well me and the wife and daughter are off to Reno for a family reunion this weekend so that means lots of vegan food (daughter)  sigh

i will weigh in real early in the morning and post my Saturday  update if i lost any weight this week.

need 4 more pounds before August 1- will have my 1 year follow up with surgeon in first week of August

Hope everyone has a great weekend and i'll be back monday to rant and rave against the evils of added sugar and processed carbs. :)
