  1. I can't seem to shake the blues this morning. I had a vgb 27 years ago and a REY two weeks ago. I gained 20 pounds while in the hospital for my two day stay....and two weeks later I'm still up by 6 (and gained weight the last two days). My calorie intake is NOT causing this weight gain....and my head knows that this is surgery trauma trying to work itself out. But I'm now sitting here questioning everything. I lost 80 pounds prepping for this surgery. I wanted to stop vomiting......I wanted the assist of malabsorption.....but I'm queasy every time I put food in my mouth. I'm uncomfortable with the feeling of food in my pouch. I'm disappointed that my body won't play along. I can't drink enough. I can't stand the thought of having to have two protein shakes a day to get the required protein in. I'm just really wondering why I put myself through all of this again just to feel as miserable as I do in this moment?

    frustrated, stalled, and lost

I agree so much with this. I really think my dietician isn't thinking this through and I feel like 1300-1500 is probably where my basal rate is and that isnt not going to let me get any where weight loss wise

    Pre-op diet

It does get a bit easier after day 4 or so. Your body adjusts, headaches ease. The good part is the weight loss. Mine was 10lbs in 10 days. I’m sure yours will be good with the longer 14 days. Try finding distractions….

    Feb sleeves unite!

your stats arent all that far off from mine, but I am eating more. Stalls are part of weight loss, no matter HOW its done. You are doing fantastic and those are soe MAJOR wins!!! trust the process! Are you working out at all? if so, incorporate that as much as you are able. even if its 'just' walking! That helps as well!

    Pre-op diet

Apparently the patients my surgeon put in the liquid diet called that frst 5 or so days hell week. I’ve done the shake diet a couple of times in the past (for about 6 weeks each time - awful & hardly lost any weight). I cannot tell you how relieved I was my surgeon said no shakes for me but a dietician supported diet which was keto. Survive the first week & it does get easier. The worst aspect is the withdrawals from sugar, carbs, caffeine.

    1 year after Sleeve surgery...

Congratulations @liveaboard15. How great about your cholesterol levels too. Keep it up You never know how much more you’ll achieve. Don’t worry too much about your bilirubin levels yet especially while you are still losing. Almost 4 years out mine is still high but we discovered Gilbert’s Syndrome runs in the family & as I experienced many of the symptoms it’s likely I have that & always did just didn’t know it. Gilbert’s is quite common. Not debilitating or limiting in any way. My vitamin D levels drop in winter (when I hibernate) so I use a Vitamin D & K mouth spray (love it - no pills to swallow - yay!) late autumn to early spring. Yep, exercising only accounts for about 10% of the weight you are to lose. Of course there are other benefits but the choice is yours. I’m not an exerciser & I still lost all my weight & more & have basically maintained. I do some stretches, use some resistance bands & some sit ups (I hate them but they’re good for the lower back) over about 4 sessions of 5-10mins each day. Would burn maybe 30 calories. I only do this to help with my back & for a little toning.

Please do not worry about your weight so much. My surgeon asked me to keep a low carb high protein diet. Your weight will fluctuate and they are aware of it. You will be at least two weeks prior to the surgery on a liquid diet and you will loose weight drastically at that time.

    Hungry...all the time

My hunger hasn't stopped either, I was hoping it would. I'm at my 3rd week and sure enough have not lost in a few days, actually gained a couple of pounds. I know it's expected so I won't worry yet 😕 I have not had any issues with anything I have tried to eat, tastes haven't changed. I usually eat anywhere between 600-800 a day depending what I have. I am concentrating on protein and eat about every 2.5 hours per what my Dr. has said.

    1 year after Sleeve surgery...

low vitamin D is super common, and not just with WLS patients. A supplement should bring that back up. as far as bilirubin, sometimes liver enzymes are out of whack the first year or so after WLS because losing weight - esp as quickly as we do - is really hard on livers. I think my bilirubin was OK, but my AST and ALT levels were really high the first year. By the end of the second year, they were back to normal. Although your doctor may recommend you follow up just in case it's something else - but often that's all it is.

I can't speak for all insurance companies, but most seem to use the weight you were when you first entered the program.

    Hi, I'm new here

I am working towards my surgery. I have to admit that I have kind of gone off the deep end eating everything that I feel I won't be able to eat after the surgery. It has only been in the past few weeks that I decided to actually take this seriously. A few years ago, I tried HCG shots. Lost over 50lbs. Put the weight back on in about six months. Did it again. Same results. I just couldn't maintain. That is what worries me the most. I can do this for awhile, but long-term? I have a really thin daughter who eats everything and an overweight husband who couldn't care less about eating healthy and hates most of the "healthy" foods I eat. That is a serious challenge. I have over 200lbs. to lose to meet my goal weight. That is really depressing. My doctor refuses to consider doing a gastric bypass and will only do the sleeve because I am not diabetic. I do have terrible acid reflux at times, but she wouldn't even talk to me about this. My husband totally wants me to get the surgery, but I think his reasons are selfish. Not sure if he is doing this as a way for me to prove that even if I lose the weight, I won't leave him... as a kind of power trip thing. My biggest fear is that he will try to constantly sabotage me, or use my not being able to enjoy food out with him to try to make me feel like I owe him whatever he wants from me as recompense for altering our lifestyle now. I am only 3 years from retirement (need 30 years) and finishing a degree so that I can change my job to something more challenging. Once I get my retirement and finish my degree, I want to feel confident to go seek a position and being obese does not give me the confidence. (I get judged way too much as being dumb for letting myself become overweight.) Anyhow, I am super super nervous about this surgery and all that will change in my life because of this.

Does anyone know which weight they will use for presentation to my insurance
  13. All my first initial appts have been via zoom they record my weight at 222 and today I went to my dietician appt. She weighed me and usually I’m like 221-220. Today I was 219.8. Which lowered my bmi to 39.9 but I know Tomorrow I’m going to wake up 220-221 again. What can I do ? I don’t want to unqualify because of it. I have another appt tomorrow with my primary for my EKG. Will they consider that weight too ? My weight today kept fluctuating between 220-219 she just chose the lowest weight. What do you guys think ?

    1 year after Sleeve surgery...

congrats! You've done very well! And you could still lose weight - albeit very slowly at this point. I continued losing until I was 20 months out. re: exercise, they say losing weight is 90% food-related, and only 10% exercise-related, so you may have lost a bit more, but probably not much. I know people who've almost never exercised and still lost a ton of weight after WLS. That said - exercise is great for your health and also helps you maintain your loss once you reach your goal - but as far as active losing, it only plays a small part.
  16. Hi. Congrats on your weight loss journey, that's amazing! It sounds like you're going through a tough time now, but don't worry, we've all been there. Regaining weight after significant loss is a common struggle, and it's important to remember that it's okay to slip up sometimes. As for struggling with body image after weight loss, that's also a common issue. It's important to focus on how you feel, rather than just how you look. Remember that you're more than just a number on a scale. Have you considered getting a personal trainer online? They can be a great resource for helping you find a balance between your weight and appearance, and can also provide guidance on managing cravings and controlling eating habits. One tip that has helped me is to focus on making small, sustainable changes rather than trying to overhaul everything at once. It's also helpful to have a support system, whether it's friends, family, or a community like this forum.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

So, I'm 2/3 of the way through my self imposed 90 day challenge to lose what I could lose before my next Dr appointment. In the first 30 days, I lost 10 lbs. In the second 30 days I gained about 4. Not great. However, here is my observation... On day 25, I began taking some supplements to try to stop muscle loss. I began taking Creatine, Carnitine and Leucine along with my protein shakes. In the last 30 days, I have gotten stronger at the gym, my workouts have been able to be more intense and my pant size is getting looser... depending on the brand and pant style cut, I'm between a 38 and even a 36!... I just bought a pair of shorts on Friday that are size 36... I have no idea when I did that last. So, in 28 days, I see my Dr again. At this point, I hope I can break into the upper 240's by then, but it's going to be tough. It's a far cry from my goal of 236, but I'm still working.
  18. Today marks 1 year since i had gastric sleeve surgery. Starting weight 317lb, Current weight 193lb Hunger comes back with a vengeance. There is not a single piece of food that i have issues with from healthy to very unhealthy stuff... So that is something i have to watch closely because i can get very bad cravings for sweets like donuts, pastries, bread ect... I can eat a lot more now than before. So have to watch that portion size and stop with the snacking. I could have probably lost more weight if i actually worked out but i rarely ever worked out. Just too busy with work. But overall i am very happy with the way i look now. love being able to find clothing at any store, no issues flying coach ect... Last week i took my 1 year bloodwork. still waiting for the results on that. I am moving next month across the country for my job so that is exciting.

    Gym

Walking is definitely a great way to get some cardio in, and lifting light weights at the gym can be a good way to build some strength. If you're considering adding more Gym Equipment to your routine, I would suggest talking to your doctor or a personal trainer to make sure you're using the equipment safely and effectively, especially if you're preparing for surgery. As for the drinks, they can be a good source of protein after your workout to help your muscles recover, but it's important to also make sure you're getting a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and veggies. Keep up the great work, and best of luck with your weight loss journey!
  20. That is awesome! I look at the WLS as a tool to jump start the weight loss process. The rest is maintenance. Enjoy your NSV. I'm now down from size 54" pant to 31-30" depending on the cutting and I know the feeling
  21. Don't laugh. I am 12 years out. Lost a lot, had stuff happen. Gained about 45 pounds back (out of more than 150 lost) and 3 years ago decided to lose it again..... and I did. And then some. So now at 67 years old.... I have gone from a size 28 a dozen years ago, and this week decided to go shopping again because my size 14 jeans (that I was soooooo proud of just months ago) were not staying up... and I JUST BOUGHT size 12 Jeans and slacks for work. SIZE 12. DID YOU HEAR THAT ? I keep giggling. Healthy (well mostly) Happy, Active, Working, Gardening, Chicken keeping, and a FREAKING SIZE 12. Does it work ? Does it still work ? YEP it does.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

4 years?! I could quote this word for word, accept I will add that I'm big into fitness, particularly Jujitsu at a fantastic dojo. While I too gained 20lbs over my goal weight, it almost all muscle. For sometime I traded my addition of eating for exercise. I wasn't happy. It's felt just like when I was obsessed with eating. Counting, measure, weighing, starving. I had to turn things around because I was just repeating a path of insanity. I'm at a so much happier place now! Now I push and strengthen and push by body for the challenge and increased quality of life. Not to escape my demons. Boy oh boy has this been an eye opening journey. If I had to go back in time, I'd still happily do. Sooner in fact. But would have learned to love myself FIRST. Because for me, the depression, and self-guilt didn't leave along with fat. Nor did I gain well-being from the attention. Once I began to work on my mind with the same determination that led me to work on my body, I became and am unstoppable! We've got this!

    RNY surgery question

I haven't heard that, but who knows? It might be true. I know bypassers are susceptible to vitamin deficiencies, though, because of the malabsorption. That's why it's critical for us to keep on top of our supplements - the consequences of slacking off are more severe for us than they are for sleevers. EDITED TO ADD: I'm not really sure about fasting in general, though. I know the malabsorption the first few months is super strong - you malasorb calories in addition to nutrients. Unfortunately, the malabsorption of calories seems to go away after a year or two - whereas the malabsorption of nutrients stays. I had a 20 lb regain in year 3 (which is unfortunately very common - usually 10-20 lbs), and I currently struggle to keep my weight where it is, so the part of fasting where you lose weight isn't true - or at least not for me. But maybe he meant for the first year or two? Or was referring specifically to nutrients ? Not sure.

    August surgery buddies!

Congrats!!!!! We are 4 months away to our gastricversary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Do any one of you ever thought that we were going to be here, some years ago? Personally this surgery was just a dream that it was out of my reach for soo long, in my country any weight loss surgery is consider cosmetic, so is not covered by the insurance; you have to have money to be able to do it, and you have to paid in dollars. I was "lucky" that last year I was debt free and my company bonuses were destined for the surgery, my boss was so amazing about it that the company lend me the money before the bonuses were given; and my amazing surgeon told me that all the doctors fee were waived (one of the perks of being in the healthcare field), just had to pay for the hospital cost. I wish someday, my country´s healthcare system considers weight loss surgery a regular procedure that can help any patient get healthy, use less meds, hospital and resources that can be used for prevention programs, reserves, etc. And that any weight loss surgery be available for anyone, no matter their income.
  25. Hi, I know this post is old, but I wanted to add (for anyone in a similar situation) that I started on Saxenda and didn't see any weight loss. I didn't gain either. However, I switched to Wegovy and have lost 30 lbs in 4 months and am continuing to lose.
