Prior to surgery I went about 9 months without my period. One month post op I got it and after that for the first 3 or so months, I was getting it up 2x per month sometimes only 10 days in between periods. I was told by my surgeon and primary doctor that it was normal because of the estrogen being released. I started the pill 30 days after the surgery and I'm more sensible to it now, if I do not take within 2 hrs of the scheduled time, in a few days I start bleeding. I will contact your gyn to make sure its from the surgery and not something else as everyone is different.

10 days out from surgery and found this online community for support. I'm on day 3 of the pre-op diet, and have been having dreams about food.

Did I eat too much?
NCL04321 replied to pamelacoa@yahoo.com's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I agree with Bariatric Master, go to your nutritionist and ask her the question. There are too many opinions on here and your nutritionist is different than mine. For instance, at 3 mos out of sleeve surgery, my dietician said i should be eating about 600-700 calories a day. I know that answer is probably different for many people on this forum. Don't sweat it, you are doing great! -
Did I eat too much?
TRAVELRN replied to pamelacoa@yahoo.com's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi there! Congratulations on 7 weeks!! You didnt say what it was you ate other than "only good things". :) I personally followed my meal plan to the letter and still do almost two years out. But that is what I needed to do for myself. 7 weeks is not a long time, but there are a couple of things that you couldve been doing. 1. eating too fast. This is an ongoing challenge for myself. My jobs have always been such that time meal breaks were pretty much non existent and as a nurse we usually "ate on the fly". This is a bad habit from bootcamp and beyond that I work faithfully to control. Its not easy but I put a bite in my mouth, put my fork down and concentrate on chewing the food in my mouth to the consistency it needs to be for my pouch. 2. drinking too soon after eating. I have gotten good at this, I don't drink anything an hour after I eat, even now. In my preop class this was shown to me and it has stuck with me. If you have ever "forgotten" and drank after or during a meal once, you tend to not want to repeat that process again. LOL https://youtube.com/shorts/oNdeGkkwqlw?feature=share 3. not paying attention to the cues your body gives you when you are full or eating more than 1/4 cup (example). Or if you are eating veggies not cooking them. 4. check your macros with your dietician. That seems to be a lot of carbs. Relax!! Stick to your meal plan and touch base regularly with your Reg. Dietician. -
High protein meal/snack ideas, Hair loss, overeating
ShooterInTheSix replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've been very specifically told that all carbonated beverages after surgery are completely off the table for a number of reasons including the high risk of stretching of the stomach pouch, suppression of nutrient absorption, bloating, irritation of the stomach lining, and especially in the case of regular sugared versions, they're 100% empty calories. There is also a study that was done by the University of Wisconsin that found soda and other carbonated drinks decrease weight loss after bariatric surgery and that they heavily impacted how much weight patients lost. Over 80% of patients who quit drinking soda after surgery achieved their weight loss goals while almost 50% of those who continued their drinking habits had unsatisfactory results. University of Wisconsin predictors of weight loss after gastric bypass study The section that addresses soda consumption is 3.3.1 with the breakdown in Table 3 Edited to insert this section quoted from the study; "Patients who did not drink soda preoperatively or quit by the surgery date were more likely to experience successful weight loss compared with those who drank soda preoperatively and were not able to quit. Given that all soda drinkers were counseled by our dieticians to quit soda consumption preoperatively, this variable may be a proxy for postoperative dietary compliance. Those who were unable to quit soda consumption preoperatively may have been less likely to comply with our dietary recommendations postoperatively. Furthermore, given that consuming liquid carbohydrates such as soda leads to poorer satiety compared with eating solid foods, caloric intake may have been significantly higher in patients who continued to drink soda postoperatively [34,35]. Given these findings, cessation of soda consumption preoperatively continues to be an important part of our preoperative bariatric patient evaluation process." -

Pre-Surgery Liquid Diet
BigSexyTequila replied to LewiB's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The pre-op diet may have been the hardest thing during this entire process. It took me about 6 days before those hunger pains and desire to eat literally everything I saw to go away. My pre-op diet consisted of (2) protein shakes and (1) frozen meal under 300 calories and under 700mg of sodium each day. I was allowed to eat all the broccoli and cucumber I wanted though. It's tough, but stick with it. You'll need that discipline post-op. I lost 15 lbs on the pre-op diet. My RnY was on May 15th. I started losing weight on my own on Jan 18th in preparation for this and I'm proud to say I'm down 90 lbs! I started at 380 and weighed in today at 290! The difference in energy is amazing, not to mention I'm wearing clothes I haven't worn in many, many years. Even lacing up my work boots can be done sitting down. I'm sitting closer to the steering wheel in the car and stupid things like putting the seatbelt on are so much easier. It's also amazing how hard it is to meet the 60 grams of protein each day without relying on a shake. I've been released to introduce all foods. I've got what I refer to as good eating days and bad eating days. Today happens to be a bad day. Can't find any rhyme or reason to it either. But I'm celebrating many more wins than that! Stick with it - you got this! You'll be on that liquid diet for a few weeks out of the hospital too. -
This may seem silly. I’m 7 weeks out, really doing very well but today I felt like I ate way too much. I track everything in an app and I’m attaching it here. What are everyone’s thoughts? I only ate “good things”, but I’m feeling stressed like I “over ate”.

GERD/Gastritis with Gastric Sleeve
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to MasonMoonGirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That happened to me. I had the option for either surgery, so I chose the sleeve because I have MS and take several meds that can't be crushes, broken, and don't come in alternate forms. For the first 8 months, things were great. Then the GERD hit, which became gastritis and esophagitis, which was so bad it caused me to need 80mg daily of Nexium (and still had gerd break through), which caused polyps to develop throughout my stomach. 4 endoscopies later, I had no choice but to get the revision to bypass. Never been better. The PPI is down to 40mg per day and at 6 weeks post op we'll go down to 20mg daily and at 10 weeks we'll see how I do without any at all. The pain from the bypass was SO much less than the sleeve, the ability to get in my pills and fluids are SO SO much better. I wish I had just done it first. As for my MS meds, I am still on them, but since we know it's basically like taking 1/2 doses (that's the way it is for extended release, but not so much full release that requires the med to be taken more than once per day) I am having a MRI at 3 months post op (unless I have break through symptoms start before that) and if that's the case, I'll go on a different med (likely an IV infusion med that I would have to do 1x per week). There's ways around things with the bypass. Talk to your psych dr and see what can be done about your meds before completely writing off the bypass. I wish I had just skipped the sleeve, to be honest. -
I had a pretty good amount of pain week 1 but then I was in surgery for 4 hours for RNY and a large hernia repair. The pulling sensation was the worst at my right incision site mainly when I transitioned from lying to sitting or sitting to standing. Even at week 2. I sipped on my liquid Oxy that first week and when I ran out I called the pharmacy for a refill week 2. I was told I needed a doc to do that so called him and was told by his nurse they don't normally refill that medication. I was like OK, I'll survive. I guess I didn't realize from the labeling (Hydrocod Acetaminophen) what I was asking for till I googled it. Oxy. I felt bad then for asking for more. After that, I never used anything else for pain. In fact I still have a tad bit of that liquid oxy left over if ever needed in the future. I'm guessing if I hadn't had the hernia repair I wouldn't have needed it at all. Like a superwoman

How long from first doctor visit to surgery?
Shotputqueen replied to KD in CT's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So far it's been 13 months for me. I meet with the surgeon next week and will hopefully get a date soon. My 60th birthday is coming up in mid September, so I'm hoping to start the preop diet shortly after that. This is my birthday gift to myself. -
Hi, I'm new here. It's been 13 months since I had my first consult with the surgeon. I just got psychologically cleared, which was a hassle. I meet with the surgeon next week, and hopefully everything will then be submitted to insurance. I'm hoping to have surgery in early October.

August 2023 Surgery Buddies!
tamra. replied to kayhay0714's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love that you have kept it between you two. I have shared with a few close people but today my coworker said "doing anything fun for your week off?" I said oh, just having a small medical procedure, nothing too fancy" - I am not close with my admin team personal life wise, so I felt on the spot, but spit that out. -

2.5 Weeks Post-Op sleeve revision to bypass. A little nervous reading these posts
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Daisy1210's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a revision from sleeve to bypass, and I'm 4 weeks post op. In the first 4 weeks after my sleeve, I lost 30 pounds. In the first 4 weeks after my revision, I've lost roughly 15. So yes, definitely slower. But I didn't have the revision due to not losing weight. I was actually doing great with my sleeve. I had a lot of complications with the sleeve (gastritis, esophagitis, tons of polyps all through my stomach, horrible gerd). I got my life back and am slowly getting back to the things I could do before. As long as you continue to lose, and you make sure to exercise and stick to your meal plan, you will be fine. It'll take longer, but it'll happen. -
Loss of restriction from VSG to bypass
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to Bella1506's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I can tell you, I didn't have any restriction with my sleeve, but once I had my revision to bypass, and I hit about week 4 and could have slightly more substantial foods, oh boy THERE IS WAS!!!! I finally got to experience the elusive restriction everyone talks about lol -
I got worried because I'm 2 months out from surgery and my chest hurt and felt hot and I felt sick. I thought - "Oh no - the hiatel hernia repair is infected ! " Went to a walk in clinic and they said it's bronchitis. She said "I don't want to give you steroids because it'll make you gain weight". 3 weeks later,I'm still coughing. Steroids have always worked wonders for me , but now that I had the surgery,I'm wondering if they'll interfere with the weight loss if I take them. I want to go to my family doctor ,but I want to know about the steroids before he might suggest them. Have you ever taken any and do you think it affected your weight?

Hi, @Faith23, I'm going to give you some tough love. STOP WEIGHING YOURSELF EVERY DAY. Everyone's weight fluctuates up and down from day to day and throughout a day, due to so many things especially water weight. You should weigh at most once a week. It's ridiculous at this stage to worry you won't lose more weight. This journey takes MONTHS, not days. You have to think long term or you'll worry yourself too much. You're brave for having the surgery! Stay brave and stay strong!

Hi all. I had surgery July 13th. Some days I feel like my porch isn’t working. Day 12 post op was the first day that I was hungry but I have also been having menstrual bleeding since day 2 post op. I known I shouldn’t rely on the scale but this week I didn’t loose much of anything. I know everybody journey is different but I’ve seen where people loose 20 pounds and I’m no where near that. It’s a lil disheartening. I follow up with surgeon tomorrow. I am focusing on hitting close to my protein goal. Although getting the fluids in has been challenging. I am working at it. Any advice would be appreciated. pre surgery weight 262

Yes, I've been in touch with the doctor and dietitian about the fluid intake. They said it's normal to struggle the first few weeks and that as long as I'm not feeling dizzy or faint or having dark urine (which I'm not) then it's not dangerous. I tried warm tea yesterday evening for the first time post-op and that was easier to sip frequently, so I'm going to incorporate tea into my daily intake.
