I'm 7.5 months out from surgery and I've lost quite a bit of hair and I didn't have much to loose! My hair is fine and less than abundant without surgery so right now I feel pretty pathetic. I've been taking a low dose of Biotin (I think 1000mg per day) for about 1.5 months and I tried the Nioxin hair care system for fine & thinning hair. I'm not convinced either of those things are doing much and I think the falling out is slowing on its own. It started at about month 3.5-4 for me. I cut my hair to a shoulder length layered cut that gives it some volume and I use mouse to blow it dry and give it shape/volume. The Nioxin scalp treatment has sunscreen in it and I have to wear a hat if I'm going to be in the sun for any length of time because I don't want to burn my scalp. All in all, I'd take the thin hair over the 80lbs A-N-Y day!

I just had my consult with my surgeon and I've been given a surgery date of Feb.11. I'm so nervous and scared and I am trying to get as much information as possible. My worst fear is returning back to my old eating habits. I know this isn't a magic cure for weight loss and I hope I have the strength within to change my lifestyle and make this work! Looking forward to meeting you all.

Hey there! I'm a newbie waiting for a surgery date! I've actually been waiting quite a while. As a Kaiser patient in Northern CA, Lap Band wasn't available until just recently (this month they did their first round of installations). When the FDA approved it in 2002 I was all over their backs to start offering it to their patients. So, here I am four years later, and ready to go. I've done the pre-op routine: nutritionist, psychologist, surgeon, lost 10% body weight...and now I'm in a holding pattern. Hoping to at least maintain my loss until I get my date. Kaiser says if you're over your goal weight, they'll walk you out of the surgery room and back into your car. Don't know if this is true, but don't want to find out. I've been to a few support group meeting for weight loss surgery patients, but have only met one person who has the lap band. I can't seem to find a support group around here specifically for LB. Alas, I found you! So, I've got tons of questions which I'll post in other threads. For now, here are my stats: 35 years old 5'7" 254 lbs heighest 220 lbs current sleep Apnea High Blood Pressure Lower Back issues Knee issues Reflux Sounds familiar, huh? --Alisha

Thanks Tammydago, I too often get discouraged. Many from my group who had surgery months after me have lost more, but I know they are much younger, are lower BMIs than me, and my exercise is all in the pool and they are running and doing "boot camp" type things, which I am not up for now. I also choose to eat real food, not everything that's low-fat or whatever because I want to have my habits and portions reflect what I know I can keep up forever. I felt if I did all the yogurt (which I hate), no-fat cottage cheese, etc. I knew I couldn't sustain. So, eventhough I have had long stretches of no loss, I know I can maintain...and my measurements still change, so I try hard not to focus on the # on the scale.

I have arrived (finally)
Jachut replied to MADE IT 2 MY GOAL..OH YEAH's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I never found I had to do anything with my band when I hit goal - my weight loss just got slower and slower till eventually I realised it had stopped, and thankfully that was at 150lb for me which was slightly below my goal. Since being at goal I have had one top up fill about a year after reaching it, as I felt myself being able to eat more and being hungrier - my restriction had lessened over that time but I saw no need to fix it as I wasnt gaining. I was up to about 1800 calories a day which for me is great for maintenance. When I started going over that I had a 0.1cc fill. That was 18 months ago and I have not felt my restriction lessen at all since then. I have never let up on my exercise schedule, I still do a lot of intense exercise. Havent had any PS dont plan on it, so cant advise there. A huge congratulations to you for reaching your goal! -
Hi, I have CIGNO HMO TX. I pay $15 for each co-pay. What was wonderful about my CIGNA coverage is that there was no out of pocket expensive for pre-op or surgery. I met all of the criteria required by CIGNA. Which include more than 5 years of medically documented weight loss attempts, etc. I was documenting all the steps I went through during my approval process. See below - I cut this from one of my previous posts. 8/9 PCP Begins Referral Process to Lap Band Surgeon 8/10 Sign PCP Medical Record Release 8/11 PCP advises referral to surgeon ready and provides me with the telephone number to call for appointment. 8/14 Darla takes intake form at Surgeon's office, someone else will call me back. 8/15 PCP Medical Records Released 9/1 Psych _Eval 9/5 Med History Review (find out I need a consultation with a nutritionist (MD) and need a stress test and heart sonogram, and blood work drawn and results). 9/5 Called to schedule the stress test and heart sonogram. Scheduled for 9/8. 9/5 Request for nutritionist referral from PCP (could take 1-5 days) 9/5 PCP calls with name of nutritionist. I call to make an appt, but can't until CIGNA approves, may take 5 days. 9/11 Nutritionist calls to advise that CIGNA approved the request. Can't be seen until 9/26. 9/5 PFT at PCP Office, and request for x-ray results 9/6 PFT Results and CXray results pick-up 9/8 Stress Test and Echo sonogram done at Cardiologist office. 9/11 Stress Test and Echo sonogram results rec'd by Surgeon. 9/113 & 9/14 check with Nutritionist for cancellations in order to get seen sooner than 9/26. No openings. 9/24 Get blood work drawn at PCP office. 9/26 Nutritional Consultation appointment scheduled. 10/2 Nutritionist consultation report. 10/4 Bloodwork results.

Waiting for a surgery date!
MeMommie replied to MeMommie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am going through the Weight Loss Center at the hospital in Chattanooga. But my insurance requires a psychological evaluation performed by a psychologist or psychiatrist not associated with the surgical program. Which includes 1. Documentaion of the individual's willingness to compl with both the pre and pos operative treatment plans 2. Interview and evaluation 3. MMPI 2 4. EDI-2 or EAT - 26 Everything else is through them. But I was not aware that I had to get the psy Dr. myself. They give me a list of 3 that I could contact that they could recomend, only one of them accepted my insurance but they were so booked up that I had to wait 3 weeks. It was orriginally 6 weeks but I had them put me on the cancelation list and they called me and moved it up. I even tried calling several out of the phone book, but most of them did not do the testing that I needed done or would not accept my insurance. Anyway I finally got it done and hopefully he has sent in the result to the surgeons yesterday like he said he would. I live on the state lines between NC, GA, and TN, so my insurance gets complicated alone with the medical Dr.'s being able to cross the state lines. Like I live in Murphy, NC but my insurance will not cover me at the Murphy hospital or the NC Dr.'s. ????????? I have also had to have surgery approval from my lung Dr., heart Dr. and diebetic Dr., and they have required alot of test of their own to give me their approval. I had all of that ready when I got to he surgeons visit because I knew that I was going to need that. I am a very high risk patient for surgery. Boy this has made me tired just talking about it! hahahaha I am really glad that all of it is over now. Now I am ready for the surgery! -
So, now that I'm almost 3 months out and down 37 lbs since surgery, 61 lbs total since i started in April, ppl have started to really notice my weight loss. So many people ask me how I'm doing it, and I hate that I feel so weird being honest that I had weight loss surgery. I always feel like they are judging me. I know I shouldn't care, but it bothers me that I do! Does anyone else feel this way?

Waiting for a surgery date!
MeMommie replied to MeMommie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I started with the siminar in Jan. and then to my insurance the next day to see if they would cover the surgery. My insurance required a 6 month weight management progess before they would cover the surgery. So I made my appointment with the surgent for 6 months out. Then in the mean time I worked on all the other test and process that I had to do. I also have heart problems and I am diebetic so they required me to have more test than normal. I would have had the psy evualtion already done but I thought the surgents office had to do that, and did not find out until I got to the surgents office that I had to do that myself. But then not all psy will do the testing required for the weight loss programs. I went through 7 before I found one that could do all the test required and that was the fastest they could get me in for the testing. So I have not been able to rush thing, combined with the fact that I live in a little town and I have been having to go 2 hours one way back and forth for most of the testing. I has been a long process for me to say the least. But I am finally there! Just waiting on the call now. ( and I have already called both Dr. offices today to make sure the paperwork is getting there!) -
I have an appt with my new PCP on Weds. I have not met her yet and I am going to ask for the sleeve referral. I have already faxed my records from a weight loss clinic that I was going to, but I don't know if there is anything I should know about how to approach the subject with my new doc. I am DESPERATE! I am 30, struggling for 10 yrs. 5"2 247. That should be reason enough. I just want to make sure I say the right things to get things moving. Any advice?

JAN 27 2007 Oct 27 2006 weighing in @ 245. today i go in for my surgury and i feel okay my stomach is a little sore but over all I'm ok. I was told to sip on liquids for the next 2 weeks, i think that lasted for about 7 days than i started drinking chicken noodles broth. and shortely after that i was eating regular. I went to the MD for my 2 week check up and lost about 10 pounds I was so excited. He scheduled me for another appointment the following month, I was down another 5 pounds, this was over the Thanksgiving break I tasted a little of everything, I did'nt have a taste for junk food as i usually do. My next appointment was Dec 27, and I was weighing in @224, I just know i gained weight because of all the food from Christmas, but to my surprise I lost. At that time I got my first fill 1cc, I wanted the doctor to add more to my fill but he insist that 1cc is enough, and he will increase the fill every 2 months. My goal is to lose 100 pounds bring me to 145-150. My next fill is 2/27. Its 3 months as of today and so far I have lost a total of 21 pounds per my last weigh in at my MDO but I've purchased a scale(worst move i made) and my scales tells me I'm between 215-216, so on record I'm 21 pounds smaller off record I'm 30 pounds smaller. :clap2: latley I've been snacking more than I like, I love puff cheese dodlles and woppers candy. i started walking anywhere from 1-3 miles, but not consistantly. I would like to lose an average of 15 pounds a month, it looks like I'm about 10 pounds a month which isn't bad but they say the weight loss slows down and I have a long way to go. about 70 pounds to go. i want to reach my goal within a year of surgery so that about 8 pounds a month, and so far I'm on the right road. but i'm afriad if i start walking and cutting my calories the doctor isn't going to fill my band because he may think its working at the size i'm at. :faint:

Please tell me how much you lost on your 2 week pre-op liquid diet.
MerryHearted replied to SydneyLouWho's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Totally depends on the person... I lost 10 lbs, but I had been doing WW for a few months prior so I didn't get that big first-week loss that some get the first week you're on a new diet. -
Did your Acid reflux resolve itself?
mohairbears replied to jordoe1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm over 1 year post op. And yes it hit me like a brick at first but yes it does ease and eventually go away . I was prescribed lansaprazole and took it regulary . But like anything if you eat to much. Eat not often enough. Or consume too many acid trigger foods you can still get acid, if you are someone who is prone to it. The best thing to do is keep a diary. Educate yourself about GORD. Try to isolate what causes your acid. In my case it's simply fatty foods high sugar carbs. So eliminating those and keeping them as occasional treats only helps by keeping me acid free. And maintains my weight loss. Wishing you the best xox -

I was just approved today by Empire BCBS of DE...who requires a medically supervised diet.... this is what was sent: *Emails to and from my PCP discussing losing weight, going to the gym and changing my diet, requesting lab work as well as lowering my BP *Gym billing records from 8/05 to present *Letter from my PCP confirming all of my weight loss attempts and my intentions discussed in the emails ....I'm sure my surgeon's office also sent them my records with the sheet where they ask you to fill out diets tried, weight loss meds taken, programs attended...and the amount of time you spent on each as well as how much weight lost on each... I did go to my PCP about once a month for different ailments and issues...but never specifically for a weigh in or to discuss my weight. But it was documented that my BP improved drastically... **** I'm sure it varies as to what insurance uses for proof of the 6 month medically supervised diet... ****About 95% of the time when I went to see my primary for random issues... I was not weighed.... -
Got my date set for March 4th! yay!!! I know I should be on here asking all sorts of insightful questions but I'm just so excited! haha But I will ask this, how many days do you think it takes to get back to feeling "normal" pain wise and able to go back to work? What is the energy level like? I do just have a desk job so I'm not too terribly concerned, but just curious as to how much time everyone took off from work etc. Thanks and congrats everyone!!!! url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/weight-loss/wNtfnfC/] [/url]

Disclaimer: I've never been a person who paid much attention to other people's opinion of me or my actions. I did tell a few people of my decision prior to banding and now tell anyone who asks. The prebanding reactions were mixed but the post banding reactions have all been positive (as in I'm proud of you for taking decisive action). I think most people (unless they've been living under a rock for the past 5 years) realize that weight loss success rates are somewhere between 1-10% without medical intervention. The ones who had negative reactions were mostly due to the fact they didn't understand the lap band procedure is not the gastric bypass procedure. Once I explained the difference, there were even some with less than 40 lbs to lose who were wondering if they could do it because they haven't been able to take the weight off on their own. I have been banded just shy of 6 months now and by some standards, am a slow loser. I'm OK with it but the first 3 months were really tough and I had my doubts. What I know now is that everyone loses at their own pace and not to compare myself to others who lose faster. If I had the chance to go back and reconsider, I would do it all over again.

Major weight loss often leads to gall bladder problems. I had a double whammy. I lost 100 pounds AND had strong genetic disposition to gall bladder problems. All of my mothers siblings (male and female) had their gall bladders removed (with my mother eight in all!). This was preband when I was 19. I have a high pain threshold and the pain is horrific.
-
I'm not an advocate of removing perfectly good body parts unless they need to be removed. It is true that significant weight loss can aggravate the gall bladder, especially if you have gall stones. Three months into my weight loss post op, it was determined that my gall bladder had stopped working entirely. I don't have any gallstones. This was a result of the weight loss, and not the band. The symptoms for my gall bladder were to develop mild pancreatitis first (very painful, ended up in the hospital), which then evolved onto the more traditional presentation of problems with the characteristic nausea and upper right side pain. I am scheduled to have my gall bladder removed next week...and hope that the continuing pain and nausea will then cease.

Documented Weight Loss
anonemouse replied to chimboree26's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I did one before I even heard about the lap-band. A NP from my gynecologist's office runs a Phentermine program, so I signed up for it. I was on it for an entire year. Even though I didn't lose much weight with it, I am glad I did it, just because I was able to use it as my documented weight loss effort when I decided to have surgery. I would think that the insurance would accept anything, as long as it was documented by your doctor. That's the kicker, in most cases. I have heard of people being denied because they weren't weighed at their doctor's offices every month (and the weight being the reason for the appointment). Make sure that you know whether your insurance just requires documentation of your effort or whether they want documentation of a medically-supervised weight loss attempt. -
Do you/Did you trust your NUT/Dietitian?
James Marusek replied to SoulGlo's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I trust my nutritionist. They are specialized towards bariatric surgery. When you consider that there are two phases to bariatric weight loss surgery - the losing phase and the maintenance phase. I found their advice spot on when it came to the weight loss phase. But after you reach the maintenance phase, I don't observe a well defined plan in place. My body changes as I transition through the process. In the beginning fats and sugars were rejected because that portion of my stomach was cut away. But after about a year, my intestines have evolved to process fats and sugars. Therefore what might be good advise at the beginning is bad advice later on.
