  1. I also have the band as on May 7th I will be having a revision to the bypass. I don't weigh much more than you. I found out I have Barrett's esophagus and I cannot do the sleeve. I was told in most cases the bypass cures acid reflux. Anyhow, I've wrapped my head around it. Side note, this is my 3rd wls surgery. I had an a Molina band that didn't adjust ( first band used) It tightened up on me and I couldn't keep food down. I went from 310 to 119, size 2. I had it revised to the adjustable band on 2007. I had foot surgery and gained about 30ish lbs. this year. I had no real issues with band but I went to talk to wls surgeon anyways and found out my esophagus was turning into a stomach and that contributed to the weight gain and then found out with scope biopsy I have Barrett's, precancerous cells. The band has to come out I know I need a tool so if bypass is what I have to do so be it. I would love to keep on touch with both of y'all. I don't understand this site fully, but if u know how add me. . Wednesday at 7, go time

    Question for WLS veterans

low carb, yes - good and sustainable. keto? NO. do not start with that. unsustainable, unnecessary, and damaging in the long run. i know you are in ketosis now, largely bc of the sharp calorie decline and your body utilizing so much stored fat for energy. but seriously do not start with the eating 80% fat thing. not because fat is bad for you, it’s not, but because you should not begin ANY eating plan that you can’t sustain for the rest of your life. because guess what happens when you get off of it. yep, weight gain regain. i follow a generally low-carb (under 50g carbs per day), whole foods diet. kinda paleo, kinda Mediterranean, but always REAL FOOD. makes it all quite simple.
  3. Generally when we undergo an operation in a hospital we are treated with antibiotics to protect us from harmful bacteria present in a hospital. This kills not only the bad bacteria but also the good gut bacteria in our colons. As a result, many of us take probiotics to reestablish the colonies of good bacteria in our gut. I came across research of gut flora this morning that seemed interesting. Our body’s microbiome, the bacteria living in symbiotic harmony in our gut provides us with a source of wellness. Two small, exploratory studies, analyzed microblome in terms of change and resilience. Influence of Geographical Change In the first study, researchers looked at the diversity of our gut flora as individuals immigrated and assimilated, changing diet and geography. The inspiration may have been the finding that immigrants to the US often develop weight gain and Western diseases - obesity, hypertension, diabetes, and coronary artery disease. While refeeding of individuals who came from food challenged areas is felt to be part of the issue, changing diet has also been implicated. The authors collected stool samples, 24-hour food recall surveys and demographics from two distinct Thai populations, the Hmong and Karen. Individuals included those still living in Thailand as well as immigrants (1st generation) and their children (2nd generation). Thai immigrants were chosen because the study was conducted in Minnesota a central site for their immigration; women formed the predominant research population because they were more frequently the immigrants. Americans of European ancestry served as the control. * Microbiologic richness and diversity were greatest in current Thai residents. * 30% of that diversity was lost in the first generation immigrants, and the diversity continued to decline and resemble that of the control group as time in the US increased and in the 2nd generation, American born Thai children. * Bacteroides strains replaced Prevotella strains among immigrants, the extent of that shift again associated with length of residence in the US. * The loss of Prevotella was felt to be the driving force behind a decreasing functional ability of the microbiome to degrade dietary fibers indigenous to the native Thai diet. Think of it as use it or lose it. * Dietary shifts to a Western diet was felt to account for only about 16% of total variation. * Westernization of the microbiome began within nine months of arrival. Resilience A second, "proof of concept" like study, looked at 12 healthy men treated for four days with an antibiotic cocktail meant to mimic common first-line choices for intensive care patients. [1] The outcome was the effect on the gut microbiome over a subsequent six month period, again measured by stool cultures taken at various time intervals. It is no surprise, at least to clinicians, that the antibiotics did not sterilize the gut, but it did bring about changes. * There was an immediate drop in the diversity and richness of the microbiologic populations, but by Day 8 diversity was returning although it never reached baseline values. * By Day 8, the relative abundance of about 50 species changed, some increasing and others decreasing – clearly, the ecology was different. And while some bacterial species were still absent after six months, by Day 42, the ecology had, for the most part, returned to its baseline. * Antibiotic resistance was only one of many virulence factors enhanced by the antibiotic exposure that lead to an early increase in pathologic bacteria. But over time the pathologic bacteria were again overrun by more symbiotic species. Virulence factors * Interestingly, Clostridium species which had not been seen initially were now present – this is a species that forms spores as protection in an unhealthy environment and then returns to its other form when “the coast is clear;” it is the source of antibiotic-related hospital-acquired morbidity, C. difficile diarrhea. Source: I Sing The Body's Microbiome So what are some of the takeaways? First, antibiotic treatment does not sterilize the gut microbiome. But it does reduce the diversity and richness of gut bacteria. Recovery of the colonies of good gut bacteria begins about 8 days after the antibiotic treatment end. So a patient is more vulnerable to pathologic bacteria during that time. For example - it is the source of antibiotic-related hospital-acquired morbidity, C. difficile diarrhea. Therefore using probiotics after the antibiotic treatment ends and you leave the hospital is a good approach in order to quickly reestablish the diversity of good gut bacteria.

    Anxiety and Irritability

I suspect there is also the demon that part of the reason we ate was to calm our anxiety down. We did it subconsciously and food soothed us, made us in a sense, happy, at least for the momoent. Now we do not have that soother in the form of food. This is also part of the picture I feel. That is why I have gone into therapy to learn to wrestle this dragon so I do not go back to being the fat person I had become. As to the hands shaking, and feeling hyoglycemic, are you getting your Protein? Keeping sugars out of your diet? I find when I even have a small amount of sugar as in non fat frozen yogurt, I have periods of hypoglycemia until I get more protein into my system. I think this is a really under analyzed portion of weight loss, the increased irritablity and anxiety can lead to weight gain and I feel should be acknowledged and studied. I for one am going to fight it daily, I am down 114 pounds in 10 months and never want to be fat again.
  5. Still in the process myself but I think it's safe to say that both my husband and I were scared and skeptical for years when it came to talking about me possibly having it. And we both only really thought about it because my family doc kept suggesting it after years of seeing me trying everything under the sun and nothing working. When we first got together in our teens (he was 19 I was 16 and now......I'm 48 now and he's 53) he was under weight and I was at a nice normal weight but I always thought I was heavy. Despite being able to wear sexy clothes and fitting in a size 4, I still thought I was heavy. I guess mostly because I WAS heavy growing up but sorta slimmed down between the ages of 12 and 16. How and why, I have no clue. It just happened. But come age 19, that's when the weight gain started for me along with the other health and hormonal problems (i.e., PCOS, Endometriosis, Insulin Resistance). Anyway, over the years the weight just kept creeping up on me despite trying many diets, exercise programs, etc. He gained too but did not become overweight. His weight gain actually resulted in him finally being at a normal weight. LOL But either way, he NEVER EVER said a harsh word to me about my weight and as for sex, even despite having gained all this weight over the years, you wouldn't know it. The dang man STILL wants it ALL THE TIME. At least like once a day!!! LOL Me on the other hand my drive is non existent. And I blame the weight on that. Despite him telling me every day that I'm beautiful, he loves me, and that I "turn him on", I just don't feel that way about myself. I am so damn self conscious that I NEVER let him see me totally naked. Well, at least not standing up and walking around. LOL I don't want to say those words he says mean nothing, cause they do, they actually mean the world to me, it's just that they still don't change my own mind about myself no matter how reassuring they are. Ya know? I still feel like I look a mess regardless of what he says. Not in the face but in the body. IMO Anyway, he is totally up for me doing whatever it is I need or want to do to make myself feel better about myself and more importantly, to keep me healthy and around for a long, long time for him. So, that's pretty much where we are. As for the sex part, I surely do hope this sex drive of mine comes back once the surgery is done. I think and feel the world of him too, and find him highly attractive as well and I hate that I keep turning down his advances a lot of the time when this sh*t sex drive of mine has NOTHING to do with him. It gets tiring constantly trying to convince him it's truly NOT HIM and that it's totally all me/my body/hormones (and sadly my last blood work showed that I'm not near menopause yet so can't blame that either....lol). I seriously feel bad that he feels at times that I don't find him attractive cause that's really not the case. I LOVE that man!!

    birth control after sleeve?

My 22 year old daughter took the Depo shot ( she is 5'3/ 110 lb) and had a horrible bout of depression and weight gain that took over a year to recover from. I would have a hard time recommending to anyone.
  7. You do know that being tight generally causes weight gain rather than loss? Because you can’t eat the satisfying foods you subconsciously eat sliders . You need to go and see a Dr. You may need tests. However you may also need to accept that your band has come to the end of its lifespan and will never again do for you what it was intended to do. It might be time to start researching other options.
  8. I had a very good experience. I did not have gas pains and only took liquid Tylenol. My biggest issue really was having to get up every 15 minutes the night I was in the hospital to go to the bathroom because of the IV fluids. Though on the upside I did not have the high liquid weight gain some get the day after surgery. In addition to doing short walks the first couple days I was back at the gym on day four on the treadmill.

    Sudden Hopelessness.......

Thank you- I'm 36 but I also have some auto immune stuff going on which really causes extreme fatigue. I don't want to blame that because that's not it totally but it certainly has been the reason for my recent weight gains. I'm SO happy to hear that you were approved. Bah! This is NOT fun. Thank you again
  10. I have a date, Jan 10th, I'm so nervous, I have never had surgery ever, and now I'm doing it!!!!! I have so many emotions going through me, this has been an ongoing battle for me, 3 years. Of weight loss , weight gain to finally getting here.. Wish me luck, I'm about to change my life.

    August marchies!

Hi Everyone. Recently my highest weight gain has been 10lbs. I too start to lose that quickly when I start eating right. Like now, I've lost 5 of the 10lbs I put on. And that's been over the last 7 days. I expect to lose the last 5lbs by the end of the month. Then I'll start losing regularly again. When we reach our goal weight, it'll be more of a challenge to maintain that weight. I'll also will be increasing my gym routine. A few co-workers have joined the gym by work and we plan to dedicate one day in the week to go. So, I'm hoping I'll be at my goal weight by anniversy year 2. I'm also going back to incorporating more fish into my diet. When I did this for lent I lost weight more regularly than when I was eating meat (chicken, turkey and some red meat). Juli, I will be signing up for a class somewhere. When I think of going back to school, it's always to college. I'm not really interested in getting a degree, just to take a class in something. So, I'm signing up at one of the community centers//learning annex. Thanks. I'm having trouble eating and keeping food down again. I'm going to make an appt. w/ my doctor when he returns from vacation. I can feel my band port more as I lose weight. And it's kinda of scaring me. It feels like it has turned or something. So, he's going to have to tell me that's normal or something is wrong. Like tonight I had 2oz of a piece of lamb chop and some creamed vegggie (corn, green Beans w/ onions and garlic). I struggled to eat the meat and forced myself to eat the veggies. That took more than 30min. to eat. Well Good Nite To All and Have a Great Weekend if I don't get to log on over the weekend.
  13. Banded May 10th and I'm still kicking. Down 38 lbs. I had the plication with my banding and so far my hunger is controlled. I had two major problems that caused my weight gain over the years.....portion size and munching/grazing. Soft drinks didnt help either. I've given up soft drinks totally and portion size is being mostly controlled by band, so all I really have to focus on is not munching and grazing. I dont think its going to be a short journey, but I do feel it will be effective and I'll get there. Did I mention......no fills as of yet? But I do see my surgeon Monday.
  14. I agree with the warm fluids. I've never heard of Protein drinks causing weight gain and even by adding stuff like fruit may increase carbs, but seriously I've never heard of anyone gaining weight on straight Protein shakes. It is true your body is shock, but on a mere 300 calories a day, any humans body would be in shock and hang onto every little pound, nutrient, calorie that you're taking in. Eating with pain is not supposed to happen unless we overeat. I measured my portions and stopped before I ever had any pain. 300 calories is ridiculous, sorry I'm not trying to insult your medical team, but that's absurd. Oatmeal does swell up at least that is my experience, but it isn't like you can stretch out your stomach by having 1/4 cup of runny oatmeal or cream of wheat. I've never heard that our bodies will get energy from fat stores. We burn fat by building muscle, and calorie deficiency, but I know when I was on full liquids only (300-500 calories a day), I was beyond weak and needed to nap often. I wasn't walking much at all because I was restricted on activity, and if I walked more, I would have needed more calories. Your body needs fuel, good fats, calories, fluids and nutrients. I think guidelines are just that guidelines, and nothing should be set in stone once a patient is out of the danger zone of leaks and complications immediately post-op. Every person is different, every body works differently, and what works for 100 of their other patients might not work for 10 others.

    BMI & Comorbidities

My insurance (AHCCCS - Mercy Care) requires BMI of 35+ with 1 comorbidity. My BMI is over 36, but I am unsure if I have any comorbidities. My PCP just had me do a ton of blood work yesterday (liver, kidneys, diabeties checks, WBC check, etc etc etc). This surgeons office has a list of comorbidities.. Which, according to that particular list I have about 3 or 4 of them (anxiety, depression, back pain, migranes, headaches etc). Has anyone been approved with issues other than the typical sleep apnea, diabeties, high blood pressure, etc??? (regardless of ins co) I have read a lot about the NO weight gain thing. I have been seeing a nutritionist, eating right, exercising regularly, etc.. but my GYNO put me on the Depo shot for my endometriosis pain. The Depo has made me gain 10lbs (prior to my first weigh in).. If the weight gain continues can I tell the ins co the depo caused weight gain, not my poor eating habits? I am confident I can manage my weight (and lose some here and there even) but with the depo theres no telling how much I will gain anyway. Anyone had this issue? What to do?

    can definitely eat more today

I worry about the weight gain too once I go to mushies. I am right there with the liquid diet hell. I too was on liquids 2 weeks prior and now 2 weeks after. I am so looking forward to Thursday so I can start mushies. I almost cheated today because I got soooo HUNGRY. I cried a little bit and I was real grumpy today, but now it is over and tomorrow is another day closer to mushies!! Hang in there everyone.
  17. Hi everyone! I havent been super involved in this community yet, but was hoping to start. Thought it would be best to share my story. I apologize in advance if there seem to be details left out, just a long, long story. I got the sleeve in 2009, when I was still in high school. I was on the lower end for the band, at about 5'8 & 220 lbs. I had tried every diet imaginable (weight loss camps, etc). Unfortunately, the band never worked for me. From the first time I tried to get it adjusted, the nurses could not get the needle into the port (I actually did not have a great deal of abdominal fat, so they didnt even try to do it under fluoro the first time). They claimed that the band port was "malrotated," but it would cause no issues. I never, ever, felt "right" with the band. I never felt appropriately restricted, and in the same day I would be able to eat a sandwich then later not hold down food. I had horrible pelvic pain that no one could diagnose, went from doctor to doctor. After years of failure (and a ton of weight gain), I was so sick of the band. I thought that it might have something to do with my pelvic pain, but two different band docs denied it and gynecologists couldnt find any explanation. In 2012 (ish), I started having intermittent sharp pain, that felt like it moved from throughout my pelvis. It hurt so badly I could barely walk during those episodes. Again, no doctor could diagnose it. In December 2013, I went to the ER with a ton of pelvic pain that I thought was appendicitis. When I went for a CT the pain suddenly moved to my left side, so they thought it was a kidney stone. However, the CT came back negative for everything, and I was sent home yet again with no answer. Over the next few months I went to many docs, from gynecologists to urologists to urogynocologists. At last, I went to Dr. Iannace in NJ in June 2014 (took me almost 6 months to get two other bariatric surgeons to send my records over!). He pulled up my records from the ER that night, and found that the tubing of the band was broken!!! There is actually a part of the band half way between the port and the band itself that comes apart, and the broken tube was lying in my left pelvis. The radiologist read it on the report, but no doctor ever called/told me. I was incredibly upset/pissed but also relieved that I finally had an answer. For years doctors told me that I was "cheating the band," and that I was lying about being able to eat bread but threw up liquid. With the broken band, changes in pressure in my abdomen could explain the differences in restriction. Dr. Iannace took the band out in august 2013, and said that i had no adhesions (yay!), so that the sleeve is totally safe. I am getting sleeved tomorrow, and I cant wait. I am super excited, but nervous for the surgery. I really hope the recovery will be easier than the band removal (getting the port out really hurt for me!). I hope to share more about my journey in the future

    Lower BMI Gastric Sleeve Patients

My highest weight is on my profile, 207. That was after I had decided to get surgery and before pre-op diet, and I had kind of gone on a, I'm going to eat whatever I like and not worry about weight gain, rampage, and gained probably 8-10 lbs. I lost that weight and then some on my pre-op diet. I did have my surgery in the US, I'm from alabama and I had my surgery with dr schmitt in birmingham. I did have issues with adjusting to the right portion sizes and learning what I could tolerate. Before surgery, I don't think I had massive issues with overeating, or eating unhealthy foods. I probably ate more than I should have, but I have a very slow metabolism and thyroid issues, so the sleeve has helped me be satisfied with much smaller portions and control my cravings. Before surgery I didn't really eat many processed foods, I cooked my own meals and didn't snack a lot, but I did have rice pretty much every day with my dinner, and some sort of carb for lunch. After surgery, I barely eat carbs. I can hardly fit them in with all the Protein and Water requirements! I have tried to eat a little rice, and protein Pasta but they didn't settle right with me. I'll probably try again closer to my goal weight. I live by myself, and my family is states away, so for me the hardest part of life after surgery was feeling alone and without support. I told one friend who lives states away that I was having surgery, and my parents. No one else, not even my siblings, know I've had surgery. Adjusting to the restriction was hard, but I quickly figured out that I could have yogurt for lunch, add protein to my coffee in the mornings, eat chicken for dinner, and beans/cheese/salsa as a snack. I follow the same routine pretty much every day, and I'm really comfortable with it. I track all my food, I bought a kitchen scale (HIGHLY recommend, helped me with portions a LOT). So I might have "given up" rice, and carby lunches on a daily basis, but if I am out socially then I don't feel too bad about indulging in a few fries or bread. I can still eat anything I want. I just don't feel the need to, and some things settle better than others. I no longer feel the need to finish the whole plate of fries (I physically can't), I'm good after having 2 or 3. Not feeling hunger is great. I do get "head hungry" at times but usually it passes. I no longer feel like the whale in the room. I might still be the biggest in the room at times, but I don't feel unhealthy, and I know that in time I'll be out of the overweight BMI category.
  19. The weight gain is perfectly normal and will take about a week or two to lose. Stay off the scale until you have your pre-op appointment so you don't get discouraged.

  21. I was banded in February 2008. I blew that. I lost like 24 pounds. Then in June 2011, I was having problems. I had upper GI test and hiatal hernia. When I had surgery for that, he did a band revision. I said this is it.... Time to shine! NOT! I have two of my grand kids and it is hard when they want something for me not to dig in. I have fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and plantar facciitis. It is hard for me to move with pain and exhaustion. The meds I take cause weight gain!! I actually gave up. I stopped going for fills. I was due last month and said what's the point. I need help!!

    Patience or panic?

LOL Goodness, you're giving me too much credit I have zero self control, which is why I needed the lap band in the first place... My blessing is that I've always been a good eater in that I love ALL foods. Fruits, veggies, Proteins, good carbs... I love all the foods I'm "supposed" to eat, but I also love the foods I'm NOT "supposed" to eat. My problem before WLS was that I'd load up my plate, big time. Heaping piles of potatoes, 8-10 ounces of meat, heaping piles of veggies covered in olive oil and/or tossed with feta cheese and lemon juice (YUM!!!) and then I'd eat dessert like a 2 pack snack cakes or a bowl of ice cream. And I'd eat my partner's leftovers. Every meal I ate would be balanced, but would also be enough to feed 2-3 normal sized people. The lap band enables me to eat an appropriate portion for one person. I think you need to focus on what your problem is. For me, it's always been portion sizes. I have a hard time dishing up a normal serving size for myself and I use salad plates now so I won't over-do it. I fill the plate mostly with Protein and veggies, and then one scoop of rice/potatoes/pasta because I just can't do without a few bites of it. I eat the protein first, then the veggies, and that leaves very little room for starches so I eat a couple bites and then I throw the rest away. Usually that's good enough for me. I eat until my stomach says "stop" and then I'm done. If I eat beyond that "stop" I get a stomach ache. There are times where I'll stare at my food and feel totally baffled because I WANT to keep eating but I CAN'T keep eating. It's a very, very strange feeling for a volume eater. My PA told me everyone's weight problem stems from different issues. Some of the folks she saw ate only carbs and had to get used to including proteins and veggies. Others loved dessert too much. Others struggled with emotional issues and needed counseling. My problem is I'm an enthusiastic eater with a very powerful appetite. The lap band itself easily resolved that for me - my issue appears to be purely physical. I've thought about it a lot because I thought I was an emotional eater and I went through counseling only to learn that I'm really not... I don't know why I have an abnormal appetite, I just do. So I think you need to really think about why you're struggling. What are you eating? How much? How often do you get hungry? When do you get hungry? Do you have situations that trigger your hunger? Are you drinking enough Water? Do you have a medical condition that caused/causes weight gain? Hope that helps a little... I'm sorry you're struggling I'm not quite an expert yet because I only just had my surgery a couple months ago but I'm happy to answer any questions!

    post op weight gain

Help!!!! i had my band fitted July 09 and managed to lose 3st (42lbs) I have had 2 fills (5mls) and the last one of those was back in Oct 09, unfortunately I have regained 1st and am feeling really depressed about. I know what i need to do as far as the eating is concerned but struggle to find foods and the time to consider my menu. I have an office job which obviously means i am sat all day which doesnt help with the exercise side of things. I invested in a cross trainer recently and am trying to increase my exercise although the going is slow. I am getting another fill done on Mar 8th and am hoping this will quick start my weight lose again. basically what i want to know is has any one else experianced this problem and found that having another fill helped. I am so worried that it wont and just need a bit of encouragement....:rolleyes2:
  24. I completely understand. I'm in the same boat. I'm so excited for this journey, it's odd to me because everything is happening so smoothly. The only small hiccup that I had was my surgeon strongly suggested that I have the bypass and not the sleeve after he observed my results from my endoscopy. I have to terrible reflux, who knew? My surgeon said there's a very small percentage of people who have it, but have no real symptoms, well nothing making me uncomfortable or pain, just a lot of burping. So now I'm on the bypass track, which is completely fine with me. I've completed my first appointment, endoscopy, 2 of 3 dietician appts, psych evaluation, I'll be attending a support group next Monday. I just have to make sure there's no weight gain. I didn't have to lose weight before the surgery. I do have a 3 day liquid diet. I'm 5', 243 lbs, with a bmi 47. I'm excited too! I just excited to start seeing results! Oh! My surgery date is October 12th. If there are any other October dates, I'd love to buddy up. ???? Good luck to everyone!
  25. I am at week 5 and starting soft solid foods. Since I've started the pureed foods last week I have stalled in my weight loss and when I weighed in on Monday (I weigh only on Mondays) I gained back 2 pounds. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this problem. I was sleeved 2/17/14 and am down 18 pounds, I'm a bit disappointed it is not more at this point. I started doing weight resistence training and 20 minutes of cardio this week hoping this will start bringing me down again. Any advice?
