The chest pains are most definitely gas. Do you feel them in your back as well? Especially in your left shoulder blade (apparently there is some nerve that's connected from your stomach to your shoulder blade - the things we discover)... For me, the gas pain lasted 2+ weeks. To be honest, I was miserable after surgery and had many regrets, especially in the 1st week. You lost a lot during the pre-op phase! That is amazing - Congrats! Follow your plan, don't eat pureed and solid foods before it is time, and most definitely focus on your protein since it helps with your energy levels. Also, don't be like me and think that you can clean your whole house a week post op and not feel any pain. Don't lift more than recommended, and take it easy. This whole new you has just begun, and you are on an amazing journey. Enjoy the results!

I had a VSG on 01/06/23. I loss 38 lbs since the pre-op liquid phase. I consume 800-1000 calories a day and aim for 80+ grams of protein a day. I feel good. I haven't had any issues with any foods. Well except that I cannot tolerate protein shakes at all so I rely on protein rich foods. I can also tolerate unflavored Genepro in my Crystal Light and some protein bars.

Am I the only miserable one?
smc124 replied to amylittlelbs's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I’m struggling right now too. I’m not regretting but wishing there was a fast forward. Like you I take adderall for adhd and had similar eating pattern before starting this process with not eating much during the day but then a huge meal in evening -often a take away when the adderall wears off. I’m having a bit of the opposite problem. I’m finding food really unappealing right now. Just looking at a piece of meat (especially grilled chicken and Turkey meatballs)or smelling it is enough to turn me off. I’m struggling to tolerate vegetables, I’m still experiencing nausea semi regularly. Worse than all of those things I have really low energy. I may be 60lbs lighter than I was 6 months ago when I had my first consultation with my surgeon but I the tiredness I feel 10 weeks out from surgery is as if I was still dragging that weight around. I try to be very active and truly enjoy excercise esp swimming and weightlifting which I do in the mornings but by 4pm the exhaustion strikes and by 6p it’s like the thought of getting out of bed let alone preparing dinner feels like a gargantuan task. I’m exceeding my Protein and hydration targets and feel like I’m following all the rules, the weight loss feels controlled and stable, but I now seem to dread eating and am dreaming of the days I’ll see my pre surgery energy level. So even know I remain positive about the outlook overall in future, real time feelings in the present moment are like you somewhat miserable. And you know what, I think it’s okay to feel that way and not pretend everything is great. The reality is change comes from struggle and rewriting a lifetime of psychologically treating food as a comfort or enemy, or indulgence rather than what it truly is - the fuel for our bodies - at least for me probably requires this misery to reset. Wishing you some comfort to cravings. One food joy I was able to find was creating a Greek yogurt topping bar, having previously never liked Greek yogurt this now is a bright spot in my food day. I hope can find at least one comfort like me. Early on I did also have mental craving for egg rolls and other normal foods so I think what you experiencing is probably normal - since you mentioned Chinese I’m linking to a recipe that satisfied that craving for me. You should be able to have it as soon as you are allowed veg. https://stylishcravings.com/low-carb-easy-make-egg-roll-bowl/ Again hoping you find comfort soon and if you ever need to vent feel free to message me. -
Advanced Recovery shakes
qtdoll replied to Kris Poole's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Very odd that you HAVE to drink these. Did they sell them to you? I just saw that they're almost 300cals per bottle. That's way too high for a protein drink in my opinion. The protein drinks I have are 170cals & taste amazing (Fairlife brand) I'd sugest asking them to switch to something else especially since it tastes horrible. That's really frustrating -
Advanced Recovery shakes
The Greater Fool replied to Kris Poole's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, look how expensive it is! Is your surgeon or medical team selling this to you? Based on what the Nestle website claims this stuff may be marginally better than OTC drinks but ultimately may help prepare and recover from surgery. For quite a bit more coin. And quite a bit of icky, sicky. Tell your surgeon you want to change to another drink and they'll probably have no issue. If it is a problem, then you have three options: Suck it up and drink it; Get another surgeon; Keep letting your surgeon think you are drinking it while drinking something that isn't torture. The surgeon won't be able to tell; This sort of thing triggers me, I'm sorry if I over reacted. Stuff like this feels like a punishment. Good luck, Tek -

There are plenty of other protein shakes out there that may be better tasting. Id match the nutritional info and then ask your team if substitutions are ok. Did they insist on these drinks and no others? I prefer the Premier Protein shakes for best flavor. -
Hi March VSG buddy I have a question, have you tried any of the protein shakes and if so which brand do you like most Sent from my moto g power (2022) using BariatricPal mobile app

Am I the only miserable one?
The Greater Fool replied to amylittlelbs's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Similar to you @amylittlelbs, I was a binge eater pre-op. My feelings were if one was good ten was better. As you said, therapy would not hurt. Since my Gastric Bypass was open, meaning I was cut open from stem to stern and closed up with about 35 staples plus a bonus drain. Needless to say I was in a fair bit of pain. Unfortunately, even pre-op, pain made eating nearly impossible. My plan in the first 6 weeks called for pureed foods, 3 meals of 3oz protein + 1oz veggies. It didn't take long for me to want anything I could actually chew. Puree just doesn't satisfy the need. My fantasies ran to any chewable food. In the puree period, after I got my staples out which got rid a most of my pain, I found eating extra flavorful and extra spicy food items. It was much better than bland. Even pureed flavorful food is still favorable, so it made bland, mush into flavorful, well, mush. Having learned how much flavor and spice helped during puree I continued the same with my food food, I just kept the portions to plan size. I did all sorts of Thai food focusing on the meat portions with some of the spicy sauces. Mongolian BBQ made plenty of appearances. Same with Italian foods, but watched the sauces because of the tendency toward fat, but I had enough to get the flavor. I could do a lot of spicy and bold flavors on 3-4oz of protein and 1oz of veggies per meal. Cravings: I certainly had cravings to which I gave in as often as necessary while staying within my plan. You specifically mentioned Pizza which should be no problem if you can live without the crust, which I did when my family had pizza. Motivation: You had motivation and it's understandable that it could waiver when you believe the idea that you can never eat good food again. Who cares if your thin if you can't enjoy a big part of your life that good food can be. How can you succeed if you feel completely deprived. The truth is that you can be compliant to your plan and still eat wonderful flavors. The key element to our post-op eating is portion size, focusing on protein first. You will enjoy your meals and the happiness you once received by overeating you will now associate with healthy, flavorful meals. You will hopefully never return to your previous eating habits, but you can establish new ones that will be just as satisfying in different ways. You will be able to enjoy eating wonderful foods, living a healthier life, and you may be able to participate in things that currently elude you. Good luck, Tek -
So great news. I had an hour personal training this morning and despite literally dragging I was so tired last night, I woke up and rather than my standard protein shake I made 2/3c Fage 2% Greek yogurt with 2/3c chopped strawberries, 1 Tb PB2, 0.5 T chia seeds and had in a protein2O. on my way to the gym and killed the workout only feeling lightheaded in the last 5 minutes of the hour!

February 2023 surgery dates!
Kris Poole replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just end up making my own soups with bone broth for extra protein and vegetables and seasings and everything, then just strain the liquid through cheesecloth. It's fantastic. I end up with chicken noodle soup base, pot roast base, french onion soup base, etc. The broths have so much flavor. I swear I used to hate broth and soup but having something savory in addition to those sweet shakes is necessary. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app -

I see you are a rice cake with savory stuff eater. Just like my husband. He loves eating these things with ham and cheese. Also the corn variation. rice cake + savory stuff = me 🤢 -
I’m six days post op and it’s been rough. I’m not getting enough protein in, but I’m managing to get fluids in more and more each day. I am exhausted too, but today I was able to do some light house cleaning such as folding laundry and putting things in their proper places. I am contributing my increased activity on day six to finally receiving a box of prescription nausea patches. Not being nauseous helped me to get great sleep, which in turn helped me to be more active.

Weight loss stalling?
Sunshine Princess replied to eliojourney's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Definitely a stall and they are annoying. I think I've hit one every 3 months. I get off the scale for a week, really look at my food journal to see where I am with protein and water intake, and maybe change up my exercise. I've gotten pissed with myself because the scale did not budge for three weeks but in the meantime, I had dropped a full dress size because I built muscle from adding weight lifting. To shift your mind and relax your body, I recommend yoga for stress and relaxation. Namaste. -
Who has had major dental issues since having surgery? I swear I'm about to jump off a cliff. This June will mark 7 years since my sleeve. I would say probably about year 3-4, I started having multiple cavaties. The more time went on, the more I got. I've had them all filled in over time to the point where MOST of my teeth are complete "fillings". The dentist said there's really not much of my teeth left, they are mostly made up of fillings. I'm nos to the point where the teeth are just starting to break. I broke one about 4-5 months ago on a Hershey Kiss (no nuts in it) and 2 days ago, another broke on a chicken tender. The dentist has gone over with me my options..............eventually dentures, partials or implants. GREAT! When I went yesterday to have her look at the one that broke we discussed again my options. I told her I was just about done with my teeth and to pull them all. UGH!!!! The thing is though...............she said in order for me to get partials, I need "anchor teeth" to hook the partials onto. Well, I don't have ANY good teeth anymore to even do that. She said the teeth that would be the "anchor teeth" are completely fillings and would eventually break. She said I could do root canals then cap them but she said those could eventually break as well. Which now leaves me with implants. But I hear those are EXPENSIVE!!! If you've been in the same boat as me, what has been your experience? Did you end up having all your teeth removed and get dentures? Partials? Implants? How painful was your experience? How did your new teeth look? Any pros/cons? I'm only 51. I never thought I'd get to this point.

How fast do you dump? And water before and after meals
learn2cook replied to bypass24jan2023's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had bypass and I dump on sugars mostly. I agree with the above posters. I have an early warning system of seeing halos and then spots before my eyes. I find it helpful to get protein quickly to cut the sugar reaction. It happens 15-45 minutes after eating the offensive food. I’ve also had a delayed sugar reactive episode from eating a cup of ramen. It was 2 hours later and felt like dumping. Basically, your body will tell you what you need and what to avoid. -

I started my pre op diet today. It's not bad. I think because lately I haven't been eating that much anyways. But the protein shakes omg they are sweeter than I last remembered. I had atkins creamy cinnamon swirl and premiere chocolate peanut butter shakes so far. I had the cake batter one and that tastes really sweet and leave an after taste. Plus they are making my stomach ache a little bit. The powdered protein shakes I feel like that sit with my stomach better and I'm not really sure why? On my diet, I'm allowed a healthy dinner. Which consists of lean protein and non starchy vegetables. I'm allowed to have a serving of lite salad dressing. I'm actually not hungry either. But I'm slacking with getting the shakes in. I planned everything out for the day and I missed 2 servings of fluid and a 3rd protein shake so far. Yikes! Hopefully tomorrow is better -
November Surgery Buddies!!!

SO frustrating when you did so well up to that FMO! I am also good on weekdays, lax at weekends and I also drink alcohol at weekends but I'm maintaining at this point. Could you go back to something more like your post op diet? Protein first (so important I find) fruit and veg next, carbs a very last last? And track track track - you know it works. Focus on the 3 months you have to lose some more before that check up. I wish you the very best of luck 💪 -

Try the unflavored protein, protein waters or Gatorade zero protein and the Isopure fruit protein mixes. The protein waters and fruit mixes have a chemically after taste, but if you use some crystal light and mix it in, it tastes better. -

You can try mixing in the unflavored Isopure shake with the premier and a little bit of milk, it will make it less sweet and amp up the protein in it. -

Hi all, I'm new here. My surgery date for the gastric sleeve has been scheduled for 02/28/2023. I'm extremely nervous and second guessing my decision. I have been trying different protein powders and shakes and most of them make me sick. I worry that if this is how I'm reacting to these prior to surgery that It will be worst after surgery. Any suggestions? -

7 Days Into Pre-Op Diet... 7 Days Until Surgery .. Bowels Still Producing
summerseeker replied to Mr. Baseball's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes its normal, there is fibre in the protein shakes. Plus you are taking psyllium husk 3 times a day which is more fibre. This bulks out your stools and I hope it explains things for you. -

We have a confirmed date of February 20th! Today was day 1 of my liquid diet. So far, so good!! Breakfast was plain oatmeal with a little protein shake in it for flavor (Premier Protein- chocolate peanut butter) and the rest of that shake. Lunch was a Dannon Light & Fit Strawberry Cheesecake yogurt. In between I've had about 4 oz beef broth and some Peach Tea Crystal Light. Still fighting to finish my second shake (Cake Batter). I'm finding it tough because everything that has any consistency is so sweet. Just gonna have to try harder. Any tips are appreciated!
