  1. I am almost three months out from surgery and have only lost 52 lbs including the 18 lbs lost in pre-op phase. I've been in a stall for a week but I continue to walk 4 miles a day seven days a week. I feel like I am losing inches but the scale doesn't lie. Breakfast is 2 scrambled eggs and 1/2C fruit. lunch is 4oz of lean Protein. dinner is 4oz lean protein and 1/2C cooked vegetables. The hardest part is getting in 64 oz of Water and I have to force myself to reach that amount each day. My plan doesn't allow yogurt until six months out. I do drink two mugs of caffeinated coffee in the morning which I'm not supposed to be doing. One cup of caffeinated coffee is allowed at six months. I do have a container of sugar free Jello in the evening and during the day I have one or two low fat cheese sticks. Hopefully soon the weight loss will resume. I'm getting a bit discouraged with my progress. The surgeon predicted I'd lose 17 more lbs but I'd like another 30 lbs more than that. At this rate it will be a year before I can reach my goal. One good point is that I've been taken off blood pressure medication, have had my statin Rx dose reduced by half and had my CPAP pressure settings lowered.

    sliders?

Pretty much anything that melts in your mouth and you don't have to chew it to swallow it. Such as yogurt, potato chips, chocolate, ice cream, and soup. Yes you are supposed to eat some of these things in the beginning as mushies (yogurt, soup, cottage cheese) but they are ot good for the long haul. It's like going to Starbucks and drinking your meal, not good!
  3. Ugh that is tough. I work in the hospital and there is always cake, doughnuts, and candy around. This week someone brought in packages of full size Cinnabon for heavens sakes! I always keep Greek yogurt, cottage cheese...if you can find Muuna it’s yummy...cheese sticks, and such for snacks. Granted I am post op and it is much easier to not stray now. The more you stay away from the sugar though, the less you will crave it!

    food

My typical day: Breakfast: 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1/3 cup egg whites cooked into the oatmeal with 1/8 cup blueberries, 2 pecan halves and 1 teaspoon raw sugar, substitute breakfast, Greek yogurt with 1/8 cup granola ( I love crunch) or small tortilla with egg whites scrabbled with some peppers, onions and tablespoon of cheese. ( I have an addiction for Starbucks SF Nonfat Carmel Machatta on the days I indulge I have my coffee and a protein bar) Snack mid morning: small protein bar or shake depending on how breakfast went or how busy my afternoon is going to be Lunch: 2-3 ozs of lean protein, turkey, chicken, pork. or fish. (early days I ate a lot of thinly sliced lunch meat, other meats were dry and got stuck. 1/2 cup green veggies, or a very small salad with oil and vinegar. If I am going to eat a starch this would be the meal I would do it. Mid afternoon snack, small apple or banana with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter or a protein bar. Depends on how portable I need my snack to be. Dinner: Again lean meet around 3 ozs and a veggie. Snack: 1/8 to 1/4 cup of almonds or sometimes 2 cups of popcorn. I have ate this way for over two years, I have always done snacks, I was never able to do just 3 meals. It took me months to work up to a 1000 calories a day and I try very hard to keep my calories around 1200. I am at goal and I still eat this way but now I try to hit 1400 to 1600 calories a day and yes I still weigh and measure my food and I still eat off a small plate with a big fork. I do not drink with meals. I do not deprive myself of anything I want, if I want something that is high calorie and not as nutritious, I eat it and adjust accordingly. I say that now but I am at goal, when I was trying to lose, I rarely indulged. I allowed my self one splurge meal a week on a Thursday. I find weekends, especially Sundays difficult and exercise was the key to continued successful weigh loss for me. Good luck and hope this helps.
  5. I love to snack on raw veggies with Greek Yogurt made ranch veggie dip. My new favorite veggie is raw sugar snap peas. Gives me a solid crunch. And its low in calories, high in Vitamin C. But veggies usually hits the spot!

How long are your food phases?

We did our classes pre-op, but our phases were about 2 weeks. Discharged on full liquids (yogurt, protein drinks, cream soups, etc.) Two weeks later, puree. Two weeks after that soft, two weeks after that full diet. (I was never so happy to see a scrambled egg as I was in week five.) Do the people who do the nutrition classes work with your bariatric team? My nutrition classes were taught by RDs who were in my surgeon's office so the program was continuous. In fact, they went through the stages with us during a 4 hour pre-op special class right after we got our surgery date talking about the pre-op and post-op diets.
  7. My doctor put me on Full liquids after day two, this included yogurt, sugar free pudding, cottage cheese, cream of wheat cereal, milk, thick soups. The yogurt and pudding really helped at those times I was really hungry. Listen to your body, you will know when to stop eating. Now at two weeks I can progress to pureed foods. He told me to go slow when I start transitioning to 'real' food and to be careful with meat. When I saw him yesterday and he said I was doing great. I only have 30 more pounds to lose. My next visit is in six weeks. __________________ Originally posted at www.lapbandtalk.com

    How was your first fill?

Thane, It was hard to tell really. I guess I just got really sick of putting everything in a blender so I though I would try something thats not too hard. I started with cottage cheese. That went down great no problems. Then i had some scrambled eggs. Everything so far has gone down fine. The ONLY time (so far) that I have had problems is in the morning. I cant eat much early in the morning. So I just stick to protein shakes or maybe yogurt. Brenda, How much weight have you lost? Is your band a 10cc? Thats great that you do mini meals. I think I prefer that too. It is weird how the band affects everyone SO differently... Good luck to both of you!!
  9. I followed Dr. Aceves post op diet to the letter. Since he did your revision, I sincerely doubt you need to worry about a leak. He has never had one, so I can't see any reason why you would be his first. On my 10 days of full liquid, I had egg drop Soup from the Chinese restaurant. I had a lot of different Protein shakes and tomato soup with cottage cheese blended in a blender so that it was smooth and creamy. I also had yogurt. On my 10 days of soft foods, I ate a lot of chicken salad, tuna salad and egg salad. I choose whatever foods were on the list I was given. When I moved to solids, I decided I didn't like the feeling so I stayed on mushies longer and tried a couple bites of solids per day. It was not easy in the beginning. I got full from 2-4 bites of food. One time I ate some fish and thought I was going to explode. I needed to learn to stop eating before I felt full. I was much more full 20 min after I was done eating than I was at the table. I bought those little cans of already made chicken salad. I looked at my portion on my plate and imagined if it would fit in that can. If it was more than that, I knew I would be sorry later. I am much better now at knowing when to stop. I can eat anything I want and I just know by looking at it when to stop. It's hard to get a full signal Feel free to ask anything you need to. We are all happy to help!

    Greek Yogurt made edible

The type of yogurt you get has a *lot* to do with the taste. Out of all the greek yogurts, Fage is by far my favorite. Normally Fage isn't in with the yogurts in the dairy case around here, often you have to go to the tree hugging section of the store to find it. It's very smooth, not gritty and has a nice tang. Try mixing in sugar free syrup like Torani or Archer Farms. Archer Farms had a pumpkin spice one during the holidays that was delicious.
  11. So I am on day two of my pre op liquid diet and I am allowed a serving of greek yogurt a day (plain of course) - lovely right? It's hardly edible. Well, I was looking for ways to make it taste better without adding solids or sugar to it and this is what I did today that actually made it tolerable. mix your half a cup of greek with a teaspoon of vanilla extract, a teaspoon of almond extract, and a teaspoon of lemon extract. I also added a pack of splenda. Don't get me wrong, its not great, but its a lot better than before. If anyone has any better ideas please bless me with them. I already tried crystal light in it and honestly that was pretty terrible for me.
  12. Thanks all. Well I can't gulp anything, I can't even take a decent size sip or bite. I really suspect all this dairy which I am not used to and yet the 2 week pre surgery liquids was mostly Protein shakes and yogurt too without gas. I just hope it PASSES. Yuk yuk Sent from my iPhone using VST

Is it a slip or just swollen?

I'm so glad I found this thread. I have been banded for a year and a half (not a newbie at all), and am at goal - really! My last fill was in Jan 2008, which put me to 2.4 cc. I lost about 20 pounds since that fill and thought everything was fine. About 4 days ago I woke up with a terrible acid feeling in my throat. Yes, I did eat some Fritos the night before, but not too many because I can't. Since then I can drink fluids like Water, Slimfast, even yogurt. But solids hurt - right at the band. This is a different type of pain from being restricted or stuck. I can eat only 3 bites of soft foods and then feel the pain. I called the doctor today and was told this is probably pouch dilation. I was told to stay on strict liquid diet for 2 days, and if not better by Friday (day after tomorrow) come in for deflate. I'm at goal (even a bit less) so I am not terribly concerned about losing some fill. I'm more worried that this is something worse than dilation. I'll keep you posted. I hope to hear how the rest of your situations resolve. Terry

"picky eaters" - my pet peeve

@@BLERDgirl - I hear what you're saying. I've been reading the posts on here and there seems to be a wide spectrum of what people eat post sleeve - I mean after they're past the healing part - when they are on "regular" food. I have read that someone was in pain for 2 hours from one crouton and another who said on weekends all bets are off - pizza and chocolate in moderation and everything in between. Some were told - only Protein (meat) and no veggies or fruit - others that it was okay. Some say there is nothing they can't eat - only in smaller quantities. Some were told by their NUT that denying yourself something you like every once in awhile is a recipe for failure. If someone is being successful in their weight loss, exercising and becoming healthier - isn't that what this is all about? I think each person has to find their own path to success. If they're struggling because of bad food choices, then that is a different issue. Once someone has healed and on solid food, why would anyone eat a food that they didn't like? For example, I would never eat cheese or yogurt before or after surgery. Ever. That doesn't make me picky. We all have foods we hate and hated before surgery. That doesn't mean we can't make good food choices - just ones that we could/would have eaten before surgery, too.
  17. i used to keep up more...now that living with the band is becoming more "usual"--i have not put in too much. there's not too much to say other than i think my band is REALLY tight and if i get stressed out or am in a situation that feels tense--then NOTHING goes down--not even ICE CREAM! i didn't lose ANY WEIGHT AT ALL for 1 month--but all of a sudden, without doing anything special--i started losing again. the combination of the really tight band, not being able to eat under stressful circumstances (such as business travel--thank god for packing optifast shakes) and basically sticking to easy food like yogurt, juice, some hamburger and a few raw vegetables (radishes work, don't know why)...and voila--weight loss has been happening. and hunger has been minimal--which is why i wanted the band in the first place--to cut down on that endless "i'm HUNGRY" feeling. am also wearing a suit that i haven't worn in 4.5 yrs---ta daaah. that feels good. i even went shopping for a smaller pair of pants for work--as i was embarrassed that my "regular" pants were just about falling off--and i had to keep pulling them up--boy that is UNCOMFORTABLE to do while you're walking down the hall... i keep looking at the scale--not moving very fast in the downward trend--but i can still feel changes in clothing--and some people finally commented...so...SOMETHING must be happening--right?? right!

    2 weeks out of surgery

What about berries pureed with yogurt, then?

    How much can you eat???

About 1/8 of a cup of ground beef or scrambled egg. About 1/3 cup of Greek yogurt. I'm 3 months out, and have complications. Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app
  20. My surgeon says it's to shrink the liver to make it easier to get to the stomach. My personal opinion is that I think they have us do it so we are more prepaired for the post op diet. After this 3 weeks I'll be looking forward to the liquid yogurt and broth I will be allowed to have lol. Annebelle- How much milk have you been drinking everyday? I'm allowed to drink as much as I can in 5-10 mins 3 times a day. The last 2 days I drank 48oz.

    Help W/ Protein

Are you making sure that you are eating protien rich foods, like soft meats, cheeses, and eggs? One thing my NUT told me to buy was unflavored protien...I usually add it to some low fat pudding or yogurt and it turns my yogurt from being 13g of protien to 23 grams of protien.... It was a good investment....also I like Injury strawberry sorbet protien powder and if I see I'm not going to meet my Protein numbers (which is 60 too) I mix a scoop of that with 8oz of crystal light lemonade and have a 8oz strawberry lemonade drink that I really like... the lastest thing I have been experimenting with is with Jerky...I have to eat it slow of course (6 wks out) but I found one that's 80 cal and 14g of protien.... What Vitamin do you take?? I take the Celebrate chewables and like them....they are expensive, but I'm worth it!

    stomach size

Probably yogurt and Protein shakes would be your protein sources this early out. Once I was onto soft foods I was allowed scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, and other soft cheeses as additional protein sources. In the next stage I was allowed tuna and shredded chicken, then ground meats, and then eventually whole meats once I was allowed solid foods at 40 days post-op.
  23. 7-10 weeks it take your belly to heal, So be careful that is a big cut and will need to be taken care of, Do not push it and just chill and let your body recover, I can say even today i still have issues with some foods, There is a big difference between Yogurt and Cottage Cheese and a 4oz piece of chicken, So i would lay low till atleast week 5 to make sure you are somewhat healed up. F@#ck Food - is my attitude

    Spike in weight

I’m to purées for a couple more days then I’m open to “as tolerated.” I’m up and moving everywhere actually back to school as a teacher since yesterday (day10). As far as protein goes I’m getting about 50-60grams from protein shakes and Greek yogurt mainly. And water I’ve done better the past two days as I’ve gotten over 40oz both days.
  25. Great job! I'm 6 days post-op and having the same challenges. I bought a bunch of pureed Soups from trader joes, plus some vegetable and a few fruit juices. I bought a non-flavored Protein Powder (gene pro) to add to the soups and juices for Protein, or I season some Greek yogurt with salt, pepper and olive oil to go with the soups. I also bought some cheddar, ricotta and feta cheese to blend/melt into the soups. I was so sick of my Protein Shakes post-op that the thought of drinking them made me sick, so I've been trying to up my protein in other ways. I also bought frozen fruit, skim milk, and silken tofu for smoothies (tasty with a splash of apple cider for sweetness). I made a tasty black bean Soup the other day: puree 1 can drained black Beans with chicken stock, some Greek yogurt, a bit of olive oil and cumin. It's very tasty and satisfying. A lot of these foods will transition with me into the soft food stage (I won't have to thin everything out so much). The biggest thing for me now is judging my hunger signals during this recovery process while I still have some pain and inflammation - trying to eat enough but not too much. I'm down 12 lbs, 9 pre, 3 post. So far so good Good luck!
