Mariel0718 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
had surgery 11/10 everything went fast from the time they put me to sleep till I woke up ... once I woke up I saw my family but the pain was serious had so much pressured for the first few hours Morphin was given to ease pain and they made me get up to walk 6 times a day ... felt a little bit better yesterday but was so sleepy always sleepy .... came home today morning but the only discomfort is the my side it’s stitches it’s hurt when i try to move get up or turn over to sleep ... but I managed pillows became my best friend ... trying to get my 60-80 grams of protein water but little by little I can feel it going down my throat and stopping in my stomach sounds weird ...walking bending up and down or lifting you legs help with the gas flow or even tapping your back while drinking like burping a baby .. anybody recommends any things else for gas?? other than that recovery healthy hurts yes but little by little things better ... -
Thinking about becoming a runner?
sawyer77 replied to sawyer77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey, good for you on the 19 pounds! To get started, I bought running shoes, I downloaded the C25K app onto my iPhone, and I got a knee strap to keep my luxating patella in place -- definitely a necessity for me to have that knee strap! As far as motivation, I started talking about it on facebook and twitter A LOT. Then *I JUST DID IT!* I dove in! And I immediately had a whole network of folks cheering me on (and of course, holding me accountable!) -- another great thing I did was join a gym where I know a lot of the other members. During the winter, when I couldn't run on the road due to the unending snow and ice, I would run on the treadmill at the gym. I certainly couldn't give up when those folks (facebook friends, you bet!) were right there watching! Heh.:thumbup: -
No 2-week liquid pre-op diet required!
no_average_woman replied to midwestmeg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Surgeon required 2 wks liquid diet. He said the larger the liver the higher the risk of it being accidently knicked during surgery. I also lost 10 lbs during the 2 week liquid diet...Which gives you a nice jump start on the weight loss process. Everyone I have talked to said their Dr. required the 2 weeks liquid. I always tend to go with better safe than sorry...I would probably go on 2 weeks liquid anyway. But, it is entirely up to You. Best of Luck with Your surgery!! -

I am a 34 year old mother of 2 busy boys ages 4 and 6. I was a normal size throughout childhood and adolescence, but have been overweight/obese since the age of 18. It seems with each passing year another 5-10 or more pounds get added. I know I can lose weight, but I can't lose the 90 lbs that I need to without help. I feel like I have been gaining and losing the same 10-30 lbs for the last 4 years and with each loss, it seems to come back with an additional 5 lbs. I am worried for the future if I keep in this pattern. Both my parents have diabetes and hypertension and I do not want to end up with the same conditions. It sounds wimpy but I have chronic pain in my left foot that hurts everyday and I am sure it is secondary to my weight. I feel like I own all the products in the arch support aisle, I've had steroid injections, and I take ibuprofen for pain at least 1-2x daily for this pain. I feel overwhelmed by the amount of weight I need to lose to achieve a healthy weight which is why I am seeking a permanent weight loss solution with a gastric sleeve. Although I am apprehensive about surgery (I've never had any type of surgery), I am more afraid of chronic illness, living with chronic pain, and seeing the number on the scale rise with each passing year. I know it won't be easy, and I realize that I will be permanently changing my dietary habits. I feel ready for this change, and more optimistic about my future if I can have the surgery. I am currently in month 5 or a 6 month supervised diet and exercise program and hoping that my insurance company will approve me ASAP! -
Hi Terry, I'm on the books for 10/11 so I'm just one day behind you! I'm getting sooooooooo excited, hope you are too!

Melissa, girlfriend, your surgeon is right! I just made it to 'onederland' (slang for going under 200 lbs.) the past month. My surgery was Oct 11th-started pre-op diet Aug 11 weighing 278. Today, almost 5 months post-op and I weigh 197! I haven't weighed under 200 lbs in 20 years-since b4 my 2 daughters were born and they are 18&19! I never thought I'ld see the day-like you I've dieted only to stall and regain. I look and feel better than I have in many years. Is it easy? He-- no! I stll have hard days, but with my diabetes reversed and sleep apnea gone, I now have the energy and drive to live my life to the fullest. Not just being worried about having a full tummy. Good luck-we're here for you!

What do you wish you would/wouldn't have taken?
Aspy17 replied to RNsleever715's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had 5 incisions, 4 were glued but the one where the drain was left in continued to ooze for several days. I think I was told to keep them covered for a week or maybe 10 days. -
Hey. I was sleeved 8-22. As of last Wednesday, 3 weeks post-op, I was down 31 pounds, including my two week per-op diet. I gained like 10 lbs during my hospital stay and it took a while to get rid of all the fluid, but I hope I'm on a steady losing track. Finding it hard to get my exercising and vitamins in.

Started at 233 DOS 8/30 & down to 210 for total loss of 23 lbs...of course 10 of that at least is water weight but I feel great anyway! Those who I've talked to say they hit there goals anywhere between 8 to 12 months do dropping 23 in 2 1/2 weeks is well on my way to total goal of losing 83 lbs...now I only have 60 to go. Woo hoo! Still on purée but not getting down much been busy & forgetting to eat or drink (which I NEVER would have forgotten to eat before lol) I don't notice till I start feeling weak or get dry mouth...sick of protein shakes yuck. Yesterday I had a yogurt & glass of water & a flintstone vitamin. Thinking of getting a juicer & getting a good portion of my nutrition that way. Gonna try scrambled eggs this next week...sounds really good to me Don't want my hair to fall out

Had my sleeve on August 28th. I lost 10 pounds from my five day liquid diet. As of today I have lost a total of 27 pounds. I am very happy so far. My diet is soft foods, but have no problems with tender chicken, cheese, beans, Greek yogurt, shrimp, eggs. Glad I got "sleeved"! Good luck everyone.

4 weeks post op . I had a hiatal hernia I was not aware of at the time of my surgery and my surgeon fixed it while I was getting my sleeve. Well, I have no idea what happened but since my surgery I get acid reflux / heartburn (I don’t know which it is ) everyday at some point in the day. Not sure what causes it. I have a Doctor appointment Monday. But first how do I know which it is or is it both ? And most importantly..... is it going to go away. I’m so sad and discouraged ! I don’t look forward to such an uncomfortable feeling. HELP ! Anyone else had this ? hw: 246 sw: 235 cw: 215 gw: ? Sleeved :Dec 19, 2017

I had my pre-op testing today!!! Everything went great!!! GO ME!! Should be all set for surgery for Thursday!! I was told the testing would take 3-4 hours, but it went by really fast and I was only there about 1 1/2 hours. Here's the rundown incase anyone was interested. Arrived at 9:45 Checked in and paid my deductible first off. Then I was sent to the testing area and was seen very quickly by a nurse that weighed me. Down 15 lbs since my pre-op diet!! GOOO MEEE!!! Then she took my blood pressure 128/76. Next she asked all the basic questions...do you drink, do drugs, have you had any previous surgeries....blah..blah..blah. Then I was asked to pee in a cup. Yippee, so far so good!!! Got back to the room and she stuck a long Q-tip up my nostrils to check for MRSA. It made my nose itch, but didn't hurt at all. Next was the not so fun part. She just comes out and says, "Ok, please remove your shirt and lay on the bed." WHAT??? Noone told be about this!!!! Get half naked infront of a sweet innocent Granny!!!?? I was strong.... I sucked it up and removed my shirt!!! (Thinking why wasn't I told about this part. lol) She then started placing little sticky things all over me..10 total. Then she hooked up the EKG machine to those. Let it run for not even a minute and that was it. She removed the sticky stuff and I QUICKLY put my shirt back on!!! Next phase was X-rays. I went back to the main waiting area until they called me back. Only took maybe 10 minutes. Greeted by a skinny little nurse that asked me to remove my shirt AND bra!!!! WHAT?? AGAIN??? AND THIS TIME YOU WANT MORE??? Geezzzz, yet again I was forced to unrobe myself and place a gown on. (She did let me put my shirt back on under the robe, but no bra) I was then told to stand facing the chest x-ray machine and lean forward onto it a bit. Hold breath..click...click...next position. Turn to your left and hold onto this bar (over my head) and hold your breath...click ...click....DONE!! Again I QUICKLY got dressed and went back to the testing area to await the dietician. She went over all the basics, which I already knew and said that was it. I was free to go!! Left at 11:15! That's all there was to it! Nothing big. Now I'm officially ready for surgery on Thursday!! Yippiee!!!

For those who had band to sleeve in one surgery..
Nursebarbie replied to Band07's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello everyone, I went to visit my new surgeon (I'm Kaiser now) to discuss my lap band slipping. I was thinking we could just take out a little saline and see what happens. Never heard of the sleeve before today but when he discussed this option while taking out my band at the same time- I immediately knew it was the right decision. My band has been a total nightmare. The group who performed my band surgery pretty much deserted me after my operation. Kaiser has been a dream come true for me. There were things about the band I was never told- like most people get it out about 2-5 years later and almost nobody has it in after 10 years. I was led to believe this band stayed in forever. I also thought it was going to be a simple surgery. Wrong. I have been hospitalized so many times for problems. I faint after I eat sometimes because its pushing up again my Vagal nerve. And its been too tight for months- finally after months of vomiting/getting food stuck constantly/and slime issues- it slipped. Thank God, because it slipped I pay for nothing- my insurance will cover this as well as my revision to the sleeve. I am so excited to have my surgery June 28th. It is so helpful to read all your comments and stories. Today my surgeon removed almost all of the saline explaining it helps to reduce any swelling to make surgery and revision easier. And I am so happy to NEVER have to get a fill or have this port accessed again. Yippee! -
Hiccups..... sort of...?

10 days post op and they are kicking my butt! I try to drink slow and that doesn't seem to be working. Sent from my SM-N910V using the BariatricPal App -
Here's some steps of things I did and I was using Insurance to pay: 1. Schedule and attend free doctor/hospital bariatric program orientation session to learn about their programs, doctors, etc. 2. Usually they give you a packet of information to fill out and mail in to them to see if you are a good candidate for surgery. 3. Check with Insurance company and find out specifically if they Exclude Bariatric Surgery including Adjustable Gastric Lap Banding and/or Gastric Bypass/RNY, etc. and what the qualifications are to get insurance coverage approved. What BMI and what co-morbidities do you have to have to qualify - i.e. sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, etc. being co-morbidity examples. 4. Many of the Insurances will require: Surgeon consultation visit to see if you are a candidate, 5. Cardiac clearance - most of us are overweight enough they want to make sure you are okay. 6. Sleep study/clearance - if you haven't been cleared for sleep apnea 7. Psychological study/clearance - its pretty basic but they want to be sure you are mentally and emotionally ready for this life change. 8. Diet and nutrition counseling - at least 1 pre-op session with the doctor/hospital 9. Primary Care Doctor supervised weight loss effort - as noted in other posts - sometimes 6 months consecutive evidence in the doctors' progress notes - not just that they weighed you but that you discussed weight loss issues. Some get by with 3 months - varies by insurance. 10. Any other 'hoops' to jump through the particular doctor gives you or their bariatric program for that hospital.

Pre-op weight loss & insurance approval
Walk_By_Faith posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Tomorrow is my last weigh in for my 6 month supervised diet. In the beginning of my diet I gained about 10lbs and then lost the weight I put on. So 6 months later I think I'm only about 2lbs less than my 6 month diet starting weight. I did however lose 60lbs on my own before I was being medically supervised, and that is reflected in my 5 year medical history. My question is will the insurance company deny my surgery because I didnt lose 10% of my 6 month starting weight? Should I do another month of dieting to try to lose more weight before submitting my paperwork to my insurance? I have BCBC of Texas...I'm really nervous about this. -
Pre-op weight loss & insurance approval
TQUAD64 replied to Walk_By_Faith's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Does your insurance compay require you to lose 10% of your weight during the 6-month diet? I have never heard that before. I was told I would need to lose 10% of my weight during the pre-op diet, then that was switched to 10% of your excess weight. I was not given a set number of pounds to lose during the 6-month diet. I was told not gain weight during this time and not to go below a 40 BMI. -
Fifty + & gonna-be-banded

Photo Egor:photo: and I just turned 51. I am asthmatic, arthritic, bi-polar, pre-diabetic, and FAT (100lb. more than when we met 34 years ago).:drama: His BMI is 45, he has to sleep with a machine for apnea, and take two insulin shots a day, in addition to medicine for clinical depression. We are both being treated for high blood pressure and cholesterol problems. We first went to AIGB-Dallas November 14th, and are working through all of the time and tests Aetna requires before banding  (hopefully March for me and April for him:pray2:). We have become more aware of the lifestyle changes we have to make, including walking, portion control, chewing thoroughly, and thinking about when, what, :tea: and how much we drink. So far, we have lost about 10 pounds each :scales:, in spite of :pray2:Thanksgiving , FOUR family birthdays,:cake:  :happybday: and Christmas! :present: :)Banding seems to be a great tool for people like us, who want:pray2: :pray:to lose the weight that is making our other health problems worse. :gluck: -
Hi All! I was banded by Dr. Spiegel 19 months ago and I LOVE my band! I have lost 62 pounds as of yesterday. I am not the most active person in the world, but I did go to the YMCA last summer and start water aerobics. It was great. Then I had to stop so I could help my pregnant DIL with my little 13 mo. old grandson. I have lost steadily since I started running after him! What a way to lose! Yes, we older bandsters lose more slowly, but my skin looks great. I just had an adjustment to my band after several months and the Nurse Practitioner told me that my band was really loose because I had lost so much weight!!!!!Now I have good restriction again. It is like I was first banded. I have been looking for great banded recipes on this website. I had kind of let things go before, but now I am back on the horse!!! Ladies, we are SO much better off with the band! Good luck and Happy New Year and New You to all of you! Calanne:whoo::clap2:

I don't want to sound discouraging and everyone is different. I had my surgery 06/10/2014 and there was no way I could have gone on vacation three weeks out. I went back to work this week and I'm exhausted. I had stretching and pulling pain on my left side around two incisions until last week.

Dr. suggests to remove my band for a sleeve. I'm cautious. Pls help.
girliegirl replied to The Laughing Cat's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
i was banded a few years back too and had it slip and needed it removed. to make a long story short, I regained the 75 lbs i lost plus about 10 more over the past 5 years without the band. I have been on the fence about getting sleeved too only because I hear its still the same amount of work to lose the weight as before being sleeved. if thats the case then why risk myself and have another surgery? If there is no benefit on having the sleeve done then why do it? i hear so many people say they work just as hard after being sleeved as they did before the sleeve. This all confuses me and just makes me think Ill keep trying at it on my own. Im feeling so hopeless...
