    Surgery day!

The surgery went great I was told. When I woke after surgery there was not too much pain but I was highly nauseous and could not wake up. This has been going on all day so I have only been out of bed twice to use the restroom. It's 10 pm now and I am waking longer and the nausea has subsided some. No eat or drink till the morning though. Which is fine because I am not hungry anyway. Will keep you all posted!

    Sinus Infection

I used to suffer from sinus and upper respiratory problems *constantly*, as did my youngest son. Then, about 15 years ago, I discovered that eucalyptus essential oil kills airborn bacteria. So I bought one of those little potpourri crocks...looks like a crockpot but only holds about 1 cup of Water. I put half a cup of water in it and about 10 drops of eucalyptus oil and the water warms up just enough to give off the aroma but not enough to burn off the oil quickly. I also put some straight oil into a mister bottle (you can get them in the hair care aisle at the supermarket) and when I change the bedsheets, I mist the mattress pad and the pillows. I do this in the morning so by night it just smells fresh. The purpose is to kill dust mites (yep it does that too) but the bonus is that the smell will go through the whole house and kill airborne bacteria. I'll put about 1 Tbs in the rinse water when I wash the sheets to do the same thing (kill dust mites). I can't remember the last time anyone in our home had a sinus or respiratory problem. Oh, and my son and I are both asthmatics and don't have a problem with the aroma from the oil. Since you already have a sinus infection, you might try putting a few drops of the oil in a bowl of warm water (warm enough to give off steam (but don't boil the water!), put a towel over your head and the bowl and breathe in the vapors through your nose...assuming you can. Most places charge an arm and a leg for this stuff, but you can get a 16 oz bottle at Rainbowmeadow.com for about $14. Last time I priced this at a health food store, they wanted $8 for a little 1/2 oz bottle.

    Don't Want to Eat

I'm 10 weeks out and have been experiencing this for 2-3 weeks now. The only thing I enjoy consuming is coffee. Getting my Water and Protein in is difficult and I rarely come close to my goals.
  4. I'm about 10 weeks out, and I'm still eating lots of greek yogurt, chicken breast, and Protein bars, and a daily Protein shake. I have eaten nuts a few times but they don't seem to sit well with me. I've also tried salads, and that was a terrible mistake. I'm SO tired of the SAME things every day. I do not like any kind of fish/seafood, so chicken it is, I guess. Even though I can eat more, I'm still not getting in the required amount of protein. I'm seriously struggling and need any advice or suggestions you may have!
  5. I'm almost 10 weeks post op. At about 4 weeks i started going to the gym 1-2 times a week. Then I incresed it to 3 days a week by 6 weeks. By week 8 I was up to 4 days a week and last week I worked out 6 days. I come in and stretch for about 5-10 min I start with an ab machine and do about 3 sets of 10. then I do 30 min of cardio. Treadmill, elliptical, bike, arc whatever I choose. I may do one machine for 30min or 2 for 15 min. Then I do machines. I rotate and mix and match body parts like ab day or abs and arms or glutes etc. I may do 3 sets of 15 on a weight that i can handle with effort. Every since I've been doing that (increasing my workouts ) I've noticed steady movement on the scale. Some days i just do stretching and 30 min cardio. Some days I just do weights. I'm starting to really get into it and I have to remind myself not to overdo it. Sent from my SM-G900P using the BariatricPal App
  6. I did both. I would do a cardio warm up for 10 minutes before my aerobic drumming class then I'd do 20-30 minutes of weights after. I need to get back to doing that. I lost 40# in 6 months pre-surgery but the gym membership is pretty steep. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App

    Popcorn Pain

Just an FYI... I see lots of posts on here about eating popcorn. DON"T DO IT!!! I ate it once about 6 months post surgery with no problems. 2nd time round though... Popcorn 1: Heather 0. I'm at 2 cc's in a 10 cc band and can't swallow my own saliva. I had a barium swallow x ray today that shows the band has not slipped and there is no dilation of the pouch. It also showed, however, that i'm not getting much of anything through the band. I'm having the last two cc's removed Monday and have been put back on a liquids only diet. Good news is the weight is dropping quickly, bad news is, I can't sustain life like this very long. May even have to have an IV put in tonight to get me through the weekend. Just don't do it! Please.

    My first Fill...

i meant fill! i physically couldnot eat more than that. (i could but i am working on not getting stuffed just satisfied. PLUS i dont want to PB!) at 3/4 cup i am satisfied! i was thinking i wanted 1/2 cup restriction. TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT!!!! i am pretty satisfied with where i am right now! i had the 'bad fill' 11-19 it wasnt bad the syrenge popped out and they lost some of the saline leaving me with 2.8 instead of 3.4. i have since had 2 fills and it was determined i have no leak just the freaky fill. i now have 3.6 and am FINALLY THERE!!!! you could do connect the dots where my port is though! (i WISH my dr would do fills under fluoro)

    exercise!

Great topic! I have been trying to do as much strength training as I can. I really enjoy the Planet Fitness 30 minute express circuit. It keeps my heart rate up the whole time, and I love seeing myself do more reps & add more weights as my strength improves. In between each of the 10 lifting stations are stepping stations, and I do six different step routines, including arms, which I vary after each lifting station. Then I add some ab stuff when I'm done, then I do some stretching. My goal is to try to create muscles so the saggy skin on my upper arms, belly and upper thighs won't look so goofy! Plus, in this early phase we are losing some muscle mass since the weight is coming off so quickly. I want to maintain my muscle, baby. Who wouldn't want Michelle Obama's arms!? (not a Michelle fan, just an arm fan!) Oh, and welcome to your first of many plateaus! I don't let myself get on the scale every day for that very reason. We know we're doing all the right things, and our body will reward us in time!

    Hi Everyone!

Hi! I'm in Tuscaloosa and going to be banded this Wednesday (09/24/08) by Dr. Bilton at DCH in Tuscaloosa - and very excited! Any advice from the experts here in Alabama that have been banded? I have really enjoyed LapBandTalk - wish they had told us about this in all the classes/support groups that I attend. To get ready for this new experience. It has been so far a really good journey - believe it or even the full liquid diet I have been doing for the past 10 days! lol Thanks for starting the "Banded In Alabama" looking forward to getting to know everyone! :girl_hug:
  13. So tomorrow is my day for surgery! Yay!! Im so excited its finally here but im really nervous too! I keep thinking about once i go under about not waking up. It scares me. I know this surgery has been done so many many times & i know im overreacting but Im praying & i have lots of family & friends praying for me. This is going to be an amazing journey im going on & im looking forward to a healthier & longer life. My husband asked me if i wanted to go to dinner tonight for a meal that i absolutely just had to have but i told him i didnt wanna go afterall because i need to get used to not eating all that yummy food anymore, or at least for awhile. He was so proud of me for turning it down. No food for me after midnight & i dont even have to be at the hospital till 10:30 which means i wont be eating anything for awhile so i know im gonna turn into a witch. I did my eating for the night already & am not planning on anything else. I guess i do have alot more willpower than i thought i did. I have done really good on preparing myself by not eating all the yummy foods i loved to eat. I look forward to hearing how everyone else went with their surgery this week & in the past as well. I will post as soon as im able to. I will share my surgery day story with all of yall too. God Bless!

  15. I'm so sorry to hear all of the issues that were created for you by an unknowledgeable surgeon! My first question is have you able to keep the 75lbs off that you lost 60lbs pre band diet and 15lbs while with the band? If so, it's not useless, think about what would've happened if you didn't have the band there. Speaking from experience on previous diets I was able to lose 126lbs but then gained it all back plus 21lbs to eventually hit my all time heaviest, so even though a majority of your weight was lost in the pre-op diet stage your band has still provided you the ability to lose a little more but most importantly to maintain your lose after 10 years. What condition is your band in now? You had said that there was a slight slip, has it corrected it's self? Is there any fill remaining in your band? It sounds to me like if you got a hold of the right dr. they would be able to work with what you have and work for you and not against you. You're right in saying that you didn't fail the band but in what I read here the band isn't what failed you, your Dr. failed you. the band wasn't allowed to do what it was "promoted" to do because it sounds to me like it was never properly filled, monitored etc. so my words of encouragement are to find the right dr. find the right "restriction" for you and proceed with your journey. I wish you all the best!!!

    Day 6 post op

Hon--the Carafate is supposed to be dissolved in water---No one TOLD you that? You make what is known as a "slurry" with it...Place it in like 2-3 Tablespoons of Water...it'll dissolve---THEN take it. I started crushing all of my meds 1 weeek pre-surgery..to get used to the taste (I knew it would be bad...so I mix them all in a bite of pudding) Regarding the post-op gas pains, walking-walking-walking gets rid of it...and I agree...it can be painful. I hope it gets better for you...I'm a new post-op, as well..Just had my surgery Thursday, 11/19/15. Happy Thanksgiving to you! [[[[[hugs ]]]]]

    Weight Loss

I had bypass 8 months ago. I lost 100lbs so far. My first month I lost over 30lbs. Second month 20lbs and third month I started averaging about 15lbs per month- but then after 5-6months it seems to keep slowing down at about 7-10 per month. I started at 250- and now I’m at 148... so I only need to lose about 20lbs more or less- and perhaps that’s why it’s slowed down. I also don’t get in enough nutrients as I have a stricture and can’t digest most real food. Animal meats and products and most anything really.. so.. yeah. But my body did let go faster than a lot that I’ve spoke too, and I haven’t truly plateaued ... I feel lucky. It’s a very rough long road.

    Surgeon sums it up.

Yup. Your last line is ON POINT. Every surgeon is different. These are great general guidelines, but they are not "THE RULE". I am allowed gum/straws/alcohol. Six months was the rule by my doctor, I was given clearance at three. I had a catheter as does everyone else in our practice. No complications. 60% is the worldwide average MAYBE, but of all the sleeved people I know, ALL have exceeded 60% weight loss. I think that's an extremely low estimate. Everyone I know hit their goal, or are within 10 pounds of it. I know you said it, and I agree with you. Everyone's surgeon is different. Follow your team. After all, you entrusted them with your life.

    Got my date!

Yes I'm in the horrible pre op diet :-( I'm bloody hungry!! :-( I was lucky that I only have to do 10 dats of it. It's got to be less than 1000 calories a day and no more than 100g carbs. My teeth feel fury!! How are you doing? :-)

    look at this

LOVE this post. Ever since my surgery in December, I cannot stop myself from getting on that hateful thing every single day...even though I know I shouldn't and that its just driving me CRAZY. I tell myself....I started a size 20. I am down to a size 10....and soon to be in single digits!! My head knows this, but then the next morning, there I am again. Tomorrow morning, I will think back to this post and feel better

    Swallowing with pain

I am 5 days post op and feel bloated and distended too. taking big sips of liq seems to make it worse and esp after my 1 oz of pureed food. I found 10 mts of walking and Gas x strips to help and take small sips of liquids. Also that 1 oz of food i get in 30 mts. Walk after eating seems to help things pass along better. When the pouch is empty feels better. Think we need to gauge how much we can tolerate. Hope this phase passes soon

    Young & Nervous

Oh so much to talk about with this..... Sorry, but I'm going to ramble a bit. First off, there are risks and benefits to each of the three surgeries (as background I had a lap-band, miserable with it, prolapsed, lead to emergency removal, and now have a gastric bypass. I'm also a family practice physician assistant. I'm not a bariatric expert, but I've been around this a bit). On average, lap-band patients do not lose as much as the other 2 surgeries. That is why surgeons typically don't recommend lap-band above a certain weight. That said, I know people that have lost 200+ pounds with the lap-band. Average weight loss is just that, an average. For everyone that loses 10%, there's someone that loses 80% of their excess weight. It's impossible to predict where you'll fall in that spectrum. Some of it is how good your surgeon is, some of it is how dedicated you are to lifestyle change, some of it is sheer luck. As far as the band, I won't say don't do it. I will say research your butt off. Again, weight loss tends to not be as much as compared to the other 2 surgeries. I would like to add that, while the band is known for it's reversibility, that is not entirely an accurate statement. My personal story was that my band prolapsed, stomach herniated (and before i get jumped for being a bad band patient, I wasn't a bad band patient....sometime crap just happens). I had an emergency removal and was supposed to revise to gastric bypass, however, once the surgeon got in to remove the band I had so much swelling and inflammation that he was not able to do the revision. They removed my band, sewed me up, sent me home to heal for 6 months, then I had my revision. I know of at least 2 individuals in my area that had band removal and had so much damage that they could not revise to another surgery....while the band is removable, I don't really feel the term reversible is 100% accurate. Another point I'd like to share is 'invasive' truth be told, you're having major surgery. All 3 surgeries are invasive. The sleeve does not have the malabsorption issues or dumping associated with the RNY. However, they are essentially cutting off a large section of your stomach. The RNY does have malabsorption and possibly dumping (most people don't dump, I happen to be in the minority that dump easily, it's really not a huge deal if I watch what I eat). Yes they are making a small pouch in your stomach and bypassing and small portion of your intestine, you are getting some replumbing done with the RNY. That said, RNY is reversible (again, subject to scar tissue and such associated with previous surgeries) IF you need reversal. The vast majority of us will never consider reversal because we need this surgery to maintain a healthy weight.....(reversibility was not a factor in my choosing RNY). I know people that have been hugely successful with all 3 surgeries. I know people that have lost almost nothing with all 3 surgeries. I know people that have had bad complications, hospitalizations, ICU admissions with all 3 surgeries. None of them are magic. None of them work without a commitment from the patient. It is not something to step into lightly..... My advice, research, research, research. Find a surgeon that you trust and listen to what they say and what they suggest. Ultimately you have to make a decision that you are comfortable with and that you can commit to. But know that every day you spend morbidly obese is taking a toll on your body and your health. Most of us just cannot lose an maintain a healthy weight without surgery. Most of us have lost and gained a thousand times. There are some that regret the surgery but the vast majority of us wish we'd done it sooner. The RNY is right for me, I wish i'd done it in the first place. But I'm not you. I wish you the best of luck with the decision and applaud your choice to start considering surgery. If you ever have questions I'm happy to try to help. Best of luck with this decision and congrats on trying I take control of your health. It's a tough choice but at least you're considering it. That's a step in the right direction.
