I was thinking of making a charcuterie board for Christmas. It will definitely have chunks of turkey but what meats and cheese do you suggest adding that are bariatric friendly? Sent from my SM-G973W using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm only 6 weeks out from a bypass so can't really offer much advice, but could you maybe speak to a bariatric dietitian and see if they can offer advice? I think you may be right about restaurant meals, because I've worked in a restaurant before and the amount of oil they used to cook (and the cheap quality of the oil) is a bit of an eye opener. Hope you manage to resolve it.

that's a question for your insurance company - they're all different. They can probably still tell you if you call them, even though your policy doesn't take effect until January. Mine required six months, but it could be any time within the past two years, so I was able to start it before my policy even went into effect - so I got it out of the way before I officially entered the bariatric program.

Hello! My husbands insurance finally added bariatric surgery onto the insurance plan. His work is based in MA so though we are in NC, we have BCBS OF MA. Does anyone know how long of a period I have to go on a weight loss program before I can get approved for gastric bypass? 3 months? 6? The insurance doesn’t start until Jan. 1st or I’d call them and get all the info I could. Thanks in advance!

De. Eric Sommer is my surgeon. I’ve only spoken to him 3 times. Hopefully, they stand by what they say when it comes to after care, post surgery.

Food Before and After Photos

Is this for approval for WLS or something else? If you are just getting started the Bariatric Surgeon will give you a list of things to do including labs and it seems to very per Surgeon. If it's for pre op clearance your Primary may want to do more testing or refer you to a specialist. If for this is for Plastics it's a whole different list. -
The serious conversation "oh snap"
Jaelzion replied to Betty1971's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
You're 12 days post-op? A lot of us were eating tiny amounts at that point because your tummy isn't even fully healed yet. But it might make your husband feel better to know that intake usually increases over time, you aren't intended to stay at 500 calories forever. Your tummy will heal, your restriction will ease a bit, your appetite will re-assert itself and you'll start eating more (almost everyone does over time). I stayed at about 600 calories for the first year and now I'm up to 800-900 calories. I have always kept carbs reasonably low (typically 50g per day) because it helps me lose faster and crave less. I am still losing very slowly (like 2 pounds per month) so to maintain I could probably eat a bit more and I'd stop losing altogether. So early in the process, my bariatric team told me to focus on getting enough hydration and protein. As long as you're doing that, I'm guessing your dietician will be pleased with how things are going. -
During the first few days, I drank a lot of clear protein drinks. They're not thick like shakes, they're more like Crystal Light but fortified with protein. They were helpful because they gave me both hydration and protein. https://store.bariatricpal.com/collections/bariatric-predigested-protein-liquid-protein/products/bariatricpal-fruit-drink-15g-protein-concentrate-pink-lemonade

Noob here...first post. I am 4 days Post-Op Bariatric Sleeve (11/30/2020) and suffering through the SIP, SIP, SIP torture. I am truly amazed at the lack of residual pain. I started this journey almost 2 years ago at a massive 364 and almost 47 BMI, due to covid my original op date was pushed and this past Monday I weighed 332 (almost 43 BMI) when I laid on table. Agree that the timing really interferes with the Holiday meals, but I cannot wait to see the results.

@NotGivingUp2: I got curious so I did some digging and found the website where FluffyChix operates her accountability group: <--URL Removed--> Good Luck! ********* Edited to add: Hmmmm...after some thought, I'm not sure its allowed to promote other bariatric-type group/forums on these boards, so I took the URL out in my original post, just in case. If you are interested, direct message me and I can forward you the link. *********

My surgery date got pushed up a week. I'm sprinting toward the finish line right now. Today is day 4 of my liquid diet. Telehealth appointments with the bariatric team and Dr. Azagury done yesterday, anesthesiology team this afternoon....additional blood work to be done and covid test this weekend. Post surgery meds on order with the pharmacy. Surgery on Tuesday! I have to say my Stanford bariatric team is amazing and so thorough. I feel a bit overwhelmed, but super excited to be on the other side of this!

I'm in NC as well. WakeMed bariatric is where I had my surgery. Glad you were approved!! -
My multivitamin has never made me nauseated... I take it after I eat. It's a capsule, and I think it is called Shinyleaf. I got them on Amazon. The calcium I got, however, made me SOOOO nauseated. I use the yummy chews now. Bariatric Fusion in the vanilla flavor (though I got a sample pack from my dietician in 4 other flavors, and they were all pretty good!)

Sushi grade tuna used in poke, ripe avocado and cooked veggies are all considered soft foods for the purposes of a soft food diet. For the purposes of a post-op Bariatric diet, however, there may be other things to consider. Just from a calorie perspective, any added oils/sugar to the fish or veggies and the avocado itself is high in calories. If you have the requisite rice, it is nutritionally inferior to other choices in relation to the volume it would take up in your tum, plus it's pretty carby (if you care about that). Sooooo...short answer is yes, the food items you mentioned are soft foods and are generally allowed for a soft food diet. P.S. i love me some poke too, lol

2 week pre op how did you guys feel.?
Neensyb replied to melyg's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This thread has been really helpful. Last week I was given the green light to have surgery on 4th January. It was my first visit to the surgeon! I have one week of the liquid and steamed veg right over the Christmas and New Year period which doesn't really bother me. Last December I gave up alcohol, if I can do that I can do anything! Last night at my husbands Christmas party I met a lady who had the gastrectomy in May this year. She gave me some good advice on the liquid pre op period. The Optifast puddings keep you satisfied longer and it was recommended by her bariatric dietician. That and Powerade Zero (we are in Australia so not sure what the US equivalent is). -
Hello all. I tried bariatric advantage and they made me sick. I tried two forms of the multivitamin and two calcium’s and could not do them. So I asked around and some recommendations were for PatchAid patches. I got a 12 month pack. I had my post op visit (1 mo post). And Kaiser ripped to shreds the patches. As well told me to get over it that BA made me sick and just take them. I know they are affiliated with each other. But do patches really not work? I was only on the patch for a day before I got blood work done. I am very deficient in vitamin d And potassium. Everything else was okay. Any ideas ?

Your diet sounds so much better than mine. I am allowed three shakes, a non fat plain yogurt and a bariatric pudding a day. I spoke to the nutritionist this morning and she told me I can have a hard boiled egg! I’ve never been so excited for an egg before!

Eating too much? HELP!
summerset replied to Love27's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What do you mean "deluding yourself"? You're a normal weight. If you can maintain this and feel alright, i. e. no deficiencies in nutrients you're doing things right. Not only mentally, but also physically. A calorie deficit becomes more and more straining on both the body and the mind the leaner you get and the longer the time spent in a calorie deficit is. I don't know how high your body fat percentage is but if you really want to lose more weight (i. e. body fat, not weight) you might want to stop looking at the classic bariatric stuff and start looking into things like "refeeds" and "calorie cycling". -
I couldn't help but laugh because your post says you're going to see a "barbaric" therapist! 😀 I assume you meant bariatric therapist. It's kinda funny. That being said, I found when I was eating 800 calories/day that it was too little and my weight stalled so I stay around 1200 calories to continue losing weight. My nutritionist never set a calorie goal, just protein, water, and reasonable number of carbs and portion sizes.

Withdrawal symptoms from antidepressants 6 weeks PO
Jaelzion replied to ScrubRN's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Any time you tinker with digestion, it can affect how meds are absorbed (especially with the bypass or duodenal switch). Your bariatric team should have reviewed your meds to identify possible issues prior to surgery. Hopefully they will get it figured out quickly for you. My team did a good job of reviewing my meds and discussing the likely affect of my WLS but I still ran into trouble with the blood thinner I was taking (Xarelto). My hematologist tried to switch me to another med since the Xarelto requires a lot of food to be bioavailable but my insurance refused to cover it. So wouldn't you know it, I got a blood clot six months after surgery. Now I take injectable Lovenox because there's no requirement to have food with it. The Lovenox is more expensive than the drug my insurance refused to cover, plus they had to pay for my hospital stay when I had the clot. Go figure, right? -
Healthy versions of junk food
BigSue replied to BigSue's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm happy with my weight loss so far, but I don't really eat these foods, other than the aforementioned use of a small quantity of protein chips in meals. I'm really looking more to the future, because I've always been able to be "good" for a short period of time before falling off the wagon. Right now, I think the fear of getting sick is keeping me in line. I still don't know if I get dumping syndrome because I haven't eaten anything that would be likely to cause it. But I know that eventually, I'll be tested, and I'm trying to figure out if these healthy versions of junk food will help me to avoid the bad ones or just lead to more temptation. The BariatricPal store really seems to push this stuff. I feel like I'm constantly seeing ads for bariatric-friendly snack and dessert foods.
