Stomach pains when introducing purée diet
E G posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, Sorry in advance for the TMI I am 10 days post op and I visited my dietician yesterday. She said since I was eating yogurt and pudding and keeping it down, I can slowly introduce purée into my diet. Yesterday ate puréed chicken and mashed potatoes (about 3 spoons of each). I seemed to be fine yesterday (I ate around 5 pm). However, I woke up at 4 in the morning and it felt as if my esophagus was burning and I had a weird taste in my mouth (close to vomit). I woke up in the morning and my stomach has been in knots and I feel cramps. Throughout the day it went away. I have been drinking a lot of water but I’m not 100%. I didn’t eat a thing except hot chicken broth and water. I’m not even hungry. Has anybody ever had this problem? I see the doc on Tuesday. How long did it take you (if any amount of days) to adjust to the purée diet? Pudding and yogurt I never had a problem with during the liquid stage. -
Was going to suggest this. My 2nd week post, full liquids, I made something similar. 1/2 cup FF Greek Yogurt scoop of vanilla protein powder and added water until I got the consistensy I wanted. Delic!!! The water counts towards intake as well as the protein from yogurt and powder.

SEPTEMBER 2018 SURGERIES AND SUCCESS
boardlady@netptc.net replied to Frustr8's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Frustr8, had RnY on August. No prediet required. One day ahead of surgery all liquid diet. I’m 65 years young. 8 days out of surgery and doing great. Transitioned to puréed soup and yogurt yesterday. So far so good. Good Luck to you. -
You could make it a meal. Get a cup of fat free low sugar yogurt and blend it with ice and protein mix, and maybe a 1/4 banana or strawberries. Tasty!
-
@photogirl70 Yes, but the OP has not progressed past liquids, so introducing solids FIRST would be a horrid suggestion. Her stomach is only used to liquid and no one can predict the reaction based on what a plan allows. Take it slowly, some thicker pureed soups, refried beans, cottage/ricotta cheese, yogurts, then pureed meats, soft baked fish. Only try a teaspoon at a time and wait 5 minutes, then another teaspoon. Progress from there.

That would be a liquid, but double-check the label. Most yogurt drinks I've seen have a lot of sugar. But even when something is liquid, always count the protein, too.

Weight Gain 1 Year After Sleeve depressed not enough weight loss

I like the NitroTech Performance Series protein powder that my husband gets on bodybuilding.com. I've had chocolate, mocha cappuccino swirl, vanilla, and cinnamon swirl flavors - all pretty good. How do you mix your protein shakes? Have you tried adding different things to enhance the flavor? Sometimes I might mix in a tsp of unsweet cocoa for a darker chocolate flavor, or 1/4 tsp vanilla extract, a sprinkle of ground cinnamon, or one of the sugar free Torani flavors. If you like coffee, you can mix some instant decaf in or some brewed coffee for an iced protein coffee - soooo good! To keep me satisfied longer I will mix a half cup of greek yogurt, or unsweetened soy milk or almond milk with ice and blend it. (I just choose one to keep the calories low.) You can get back on track, just make a plan and make it happen. Remember, the first few days will be the hardest, but you will see results and feel better, then it will get easier. -
Finally got a surgery date! YAY! Now I want to start a FB group for Aug/Sep/Oct sleevers; thoughts?

Ok I’m on my 4 th day of 2 week liquid diet pre surgery and feel pretty good have lost 5 pounds already. Keeping calories around 850-1000. And today I’m so not hungry struggling to get up to 700callories. 3 shakes 1 jello 1/2 cup. 1 cup fat free Greek yogurt which I haven’t eaten but did count the calories. 68 oz water and 1 dill pickle. Has anyone else just not be having hungry on pre op ? -
I’m having my sleeve surgery on August 28th, just a in few days . I started my liquid pre op diet yesterday and I was doing well until I got up this morning vomiting my brains out, so bad I wound up in the ER , they told me I was having caffeine withdrawal because I didn’t wean myself. Has anyone experienced this? By the way I’m only having my protein shakes, jello, ice pops , broth and water. Can I have plain yogurt?

Hey my gastric bypass family! Boy what a rough day it was! Clearly my mind has to adjust to this new life style. Im legit having flashbacks of junk food in my head. Which is embarrassing I know 😰 I’m just 3 days out of surgery. I haven’t did the number 2 yet,, which I don’t know if it’s normal? But yeah I’m so sore, the surrounding of my incisions is turning a bit blue/green , cuz it was a deep cut so I think it’s just bruising.! But if somebody has an idea what it can be?? It would be welcome Ofcourse to top that off, I have my period 😑 Well my liquids are harder today. Yesterday I drank 2 liters of water. (I don’t do ounces, I’m from Europe! ) But today I can’t even finish 1 liter. Broth goes down well, yogurt too but the evening meal is a bit tough. So yeah I’m just in bed. And hoping for a safe recovery!! The anti blood clot injections is really a pain too and also waking up with morning sickness 🤢 but if you take anti acid it helps right away luckily. Well I’m gonna try to get some water down and if plain water doesn’t help , I must put something in my water like sugar free syrup to get it down my throat , so to speak. So far I don’t experience any regret. I don’t experience “fear of missing out on food” yet. But I do get flashbacks of junk food and I still have the hunger in my mind while my pouch is clearly full. I think it’s the lack of liquids. Anyway I’m done rambling thanks for listening ! Maybe I will come back and talk about my surgery and explain more what happend for the people that think about doing it and still have doubts or fear of the pain cuz I was there!! Anyway take care y’all. Xoxo

boardlady@netptc.net replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just learned of this app. Exactly what I’ve been looking for. I am one week post-op from RnY. So far, so good. Minimal pain, minimal gas. Had my first “meal” after one week of solid liquids. I slowly ate 3 ounces of nonfat plain Greek yogurt. It was awesome to have something other than broth and sugar-free popsicles. Good luck to all of you who are still waiting for your surgery. I am 65 years young and anxious to be healthy. Down 12 pounds. -

Hi All! Can anyone share their menu of their daily meals/snacks? How many calories is everyone getting? I meet with my nutritionist next week since before surgery and want to be sure I'm ok. I average between 700-800 calories a day right now and probably burn an extra 300-400 calories a day during my jogs/light lifting. I'm averaging at about a 1 lb. loss per week so hoping I can figure out if I need to make any adjustments as I wish I was losing more only being about 8 weeks out... TODAY: Breakfast: Dannon Oikois Triple Zero Vanilla Yogurt Snack: Premier Protein Shake, Calcium Chewy Bite, Fiber Choice Chewy Tablet Lunch: 2 oz. turkey deli meat, 1 oz. string cheese, 1 oz. canned carrots Snack: Premier Protein Shake, Calcium Chewy Bite, Fiber Choice Chewy Tablet Dinner: 1/2 Cup Amy's Organic Vegetarian Chili -

Breakfast of champions Scrambled eggs and cheese, turkey sausage , light yogurt, cottage cheese and fruit platter -
Yes, I now get to enjoy tuna, salmon. Soft fishes. I always have Greek yogurt at home, and my office. Definitely. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app

I always have Greek yogurt on hand. I like Oikos triple zero the best. Yoplait just came out with a yogurt that is made using ultra filtered milk that has a similar nutritional profile that I like too. For meals I like a dense protein, Aidell makes a great chicken sausage. I eat lots of salmon and chicken dishes I make in my slow cooker.

Oh I own it, no where does it say a go to EVERYDAY.... I never thought about putting my protein powder in them. But yes I still have yogurt with protein powder also. I hope yogurt is OK with the food police. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app

You called them your go to food, so... Just own it. My go to foods at your stage were curry stewed haddock, mashed white sweet potato (with unflavored whey protein), yogurt and Salmon pâté (I still eat the yogurt and the salmon) CONGRATS !!!

Ugh - protein shake is making me nauseous
AngelaM258 replied to AngelaM258's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I get 3 dairy servings (either 1 cup of milk) or yogurt. I’ve been doing the yogurt so I get to “eat” something. Ugh! Maybe I’ll get used to it. 🤢 -
Light bulb moment!!! I really, really, really didn't want yogurt for dinner again tonight. We had leftover baked chicken from last night and it was soooo calling my name. I knew I couldn't just eat the chicken, but we have grapes, too. Nice, juicy ones. I managed to eat a little bit of chicken, a grape to wash it down, a little bit of chicken, another grape . . . I ate an ounce and a half of chicken!!! In one sitting!!! JOY!!! I feel so stupid for not figuring this out earlier.
-
I've always made my protein shakes with powdered whey protein. 2nd week I would make my shake with low fat Greek yogurt. If you use pre-made shakes you can do the same with those. I just didn't like the fake sugar taste of what I tried so prefer to make my own and adjust the taste with water.

My nutritionists wanted me to do several things: 1) Focus on getting a protein as part of every meal. Ideally a lean protein, but they never balked at peanut butter on an apple as a snack. Low-sugar yogurts are good. Light string cheese is good. Eggs are good. 2) Get a fruit (up to 1/2 cup or 1 fruit) or a vegetable with each meal. 3) Switch from simple to complex carbohydrates. If you're going to have bread, make it whole grain--and after your protein. They weren't like "take away potatoes" (though they did encourage me not to count those as a vegetable :)), but they were like "switch from white rice to brown rice." 4) Take small bites, chew a lot, eat mindfully, put the fork/spoon down between every bite. No wolfing down food in the car, no open bags of chips in front of the TV. 5) Get 8 cups or more of water per day. If it has Mio in it, or it's an herbal tea or a decaf coffee, that's totally fine. Sugary beverages are a big no, and caffeinated beverages don't count. 6) Stop having carbonated drinks. (This is the one that I balked at the most, honestly. I knew I'd need to give them up post-op, but I had really planned to keep enjoying them until I had to stop.) If you really must have that diet soda, let it go flat first. And I mostly followed that -- I won't lie: at least two croissants, no small amount of Chicago style popcorn, and several servings of pizza crossed my lips over the course of the two months I mostly-followed these guidelines -- and lost 6 pounds each month. I need to lose a bit more quickly, so I've changed things around a bit -- doing a low-fat ketogenic diet which has me down near 1000 calories a day -- in order to meet my doctor's arbitrary weight goal in time to get my surgery this fall. But the rules above were pretty good, and the flexibility to break them--just a little, and only very rarely--was nice. (I hate keto. I hate that a single piece of fruit will wreck up my system for over a day. But it is a very efficient way to lose weight with mostly manageable hunger. And those refried beans in the mushy food stage will taste SO GOOD to me. I miss beans.)

I noticed that hospitals have different rules and regulations across the board, I had it very diluted tho. So I wouldn’t say it was clear liquids but also not puréed. I’m allowed to have unsweetened custard and yogurt and mushed up fruits too.

Summer 2018 Surgery Buddies Check In Here!
Ninarwiener replied to Ylime's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@ellie123 I’m sorry you have been through so much! The shame is the worst part of all of this. I can’t comment on a sleeve to RnY revision, but having just done the RnY I can tell you that you will NOT be hungry. You will not struggle with the post surgical diet because you will NOT feel like eating! I have had a rough recovery to be sure, but the recovery from this surgery is a lot more intense than the sleeve. I went on purée at 2 weeks, and I was excited to eat again but sadly can only stomach Greek yogurt and soft boiled eggs so far!! There’s serious negative feedback if you eat too fast or too much. You might want to look into Overeater’s Anonymous if you want additional support with changing eating habits. There’s a lot of intelligent folks there who totally get it. -

I've had kefir, and it reminded me not even one little bit of drinking alcohol. It's like really tangy, thin yogurt. If you're worried, you could just have yogurt. Chobani has a pretty good mix of happy yogurt bugs in it. (And Light 'n Fit is absolute junk, probiotically speaking. They don't list what strains they include, which makes me suspect they don't really include any.)
