Wow that’s encouraging to see his continued weight loss after the band. I was pretty successful with it until the complications happened. That’s why I think I’ll do well with VSG. Does he think it’s similar?

So a year ago I completed the 6-month process for my insurance to get weight loss surgery. We were getting ready to schedule the date and I chickened out Plus on top of that a lot of stuff happened I lost my grandpa and my sister within 2 days of each other. I called today to see what I needed to get back on plan for surgery, because this time I'm so beyond ready. They said I would have to repeat the 6 month process again which I'm ok with. That helps me to get some weight off before surgery so the surgery is saver. I'm so excited for this journey but terrified of there being complications. Anyone had the Mini Sleeve at McCarty Weight Loss Center in Dallas, TX?
RickM replied to dreamangel1974's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It is certainly worth looking into, though it doesn't seem that there is much that is special, as there are other single incision type lap techniques that are touted, and extensive pre-op diets, liquid or otherwise, are not a standard thing - I never did anything other than the usual day before thing. VSGs are sometimes done outpatient with the standard techniques - it's more of a concern of verifying that all of the inside part is working correctly than the incisions healing, and the endoscopic aspect is a normal part of a VSG procedure as that is where they insert the bougie that they use for guiding the stomach cut. It overall sounds like they are applying a proprietary name to some fairly routine techniques as a means of setting themselves apart from the crowd. There is another guy in TX that promotes a "special" sleeve (inverted, maybe?) that is little more than an oversewn staple line that is, or was, a fairly standard procedure. It mostly sounds like marketing more than anything overly innovative; I would really verify results and complication rates as results matter a lot more than what techniques are used to get them. -
Hi all! I posted this in the general forum as well, but since I’m going for VSG I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have it here as well. I just wanted to introduce myself. I’ve been on the forums in the past to read all I can about the VSG surgery. Tons of great info here. I had the lap band placed on 2008 and finally had it removed last year because of a lot of complications. Now I am on the journey to VSG. Truthfully I should had had the revision when I had the band taken out, but the surgeon was against it. Now I am tracking my weight with my Dr. to fulfill the 6 month requirement for my insurance. My goal is to have the surgery sometime in July since that’s the timeline for the insurance, but we’ll see. Im sure there are others going through this same timeline so if your looking for support count me in.

Anyone had the Mini Sleeve at McCarty Weight Loss Center in Dallas, TX?
KCgirl061 replied to dreamangel1974's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This intrigues me (professionally, as a nurse) and I’m interested in learning more about it. Keep in mind as a new procedure there may not be a lot of information out there about the complications. Once upon a time the VGS was brand new and it’s becoming more and more popular due to the success rates. Once upon a time the Lap Band was brand new, and now many surgeons refuse to place them. You have to consider whether doing something brand new for the short term advantages of outpatient, less incisions, no liquid diet would outweigh any potential long term complications that are an unknown. Maybe the surgeons office has a support group where you can meet previous patients of his? -
Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
Niki1617 replied to Elrix's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Just had my lap band removed on 2/14/18. Originally, placed on 6/9/2010. I had lost weight and within the last 18 months started have complications. Doc found that 90% of my band had eroded and was on the inside of my stomach. The surgery and recovery have been absolutely horrible. I haven’t had solid food in over a month and liquids for the last almost 2 weeks. I would not recommend the lap band at this point. My WLS does not do them anymore. Too many complications with them. -
If you traveled for surgery - post op care
abefroman329 replied to ElseeG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Frankly, that’s why I wouldn’t recommend going out of town for the surgery, at least, so far that you can’t also travel for post-op care from the same surgeon. When I realized I needed to have surgery to repair an anal fissure, I was on the verge of moving from DC to Chicago, and my surgeon in DC recommended moving and having it done in Chicago for continuity of care purposes. And that surgery was much less complicated than weight loss surgery. -
Zero complications (my surgeons were amazing ,talented and really skilled ) Losing slowly and stalling often but no lose skin at -50 lbs so I'll take it

Bypass or Sleeve???
Phoenix40 replied to dreamangel1974's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I wanted the sleeve because the bypass scared me. I had the bypass because my surgeon said it was the best option for me and I would lose the most weight. I heard of people getting the sleeve and then having the revision later if they did not lose enough weight. I was having none of that. One surgery only for me, lol. I am so happy with my decision. I have not had any complications and my recovery was a breeze. I know several people who had the sleeve and wish they did the bypass. Oh okay, unfortunately they scheduled my appointments for me, so I will be waiting until May lol. How are you doing now? Any complications? Are you losing?

Is the second date the one?
abefroman329 replied to melsabells's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That’s just weird! The surgeon wants your A1C be,ow 7 so they know your diabetes is controlled and you won’t have complications from the surgery with healing. That was a requirement from my surgeon. Luckily mine has been below 7 for about 4 years. The good news is, I had my A1C checked as part of my annual physical and it fell from 6.2 to 5.2. My primary was “thrilled” (his words) and took me off the Janumet. No more diabetes meds at all! So you have that to look forward to. -
February bypass buddies?
stefanie0804 replied to RunningLibrarian's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
It was pretty bad for me that was the worst part although in all fairness as well I have a bad reaction to anesthetic which I learned the surgery and last night I learned that I'm allergic to hydromorphone after my body broke out in hives if I didn't have this stupid complications related to medication the surgery would have been a breeze -
There’s definitely variance between the scale at my primary’s office, the scale at the surgeon, and the scale at the dietitian. The latter two use those platform scales, my primary uses a smaller, bathroom-style one. Further complicating matters is the fact that primary takes off 2-3 pounds for clothing weight, depending on the season, and the others do not. At home I use the Fitbit Alta, which I like because it uploads the data to my Fitbit app.

I never bothered to ask, I was worried about revision rate, mortality statistics, etc. But my surgeon was super good and I have had no complications so far. Nausea is tricky to predict but easily controlled with meds

Post Op with small children
GreenTealael replied to YRVD1009's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would suggest waiting until the 7 month old can walk and no longer wants to be picked up constantly because surgeons would not recommend carrying anything more than 10 lbs for a while. However if you start the process now that may be the case anyway since your insurance may dictate a 3-6 month waiting period. Having a strong support system is key when you have young children because you will have to focus on yourself for a bit. Go at the pace you are completely comfortable with. TBH life will become more enjoyable (barring complications ) and you will be glad you didn't wait forever. -
Size 34 bougie here. My surgeon feels it is the smallest that has has minimal complications. I have has zero nausea or vomiting, but my neighbor who had the same surgeon has had consistent nausea and vomiting during her 2 month post op. She said it has always been brought on by eating the wrong thing, or too much.

Self payers aftercare problems
utahgirll replied to Gotta win 4me's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I think the MGB is the best operation out there, and i have been researching all WLS a long time. Major prolem or complication questions can be asked to the three American doctors that do the operations here in the states. After surgery, basically what you will need from your pcp will be blood tests to make sure your vitamin/blood levels are good. some docs just do not like the idea of Mexico, not matter what the surgery is. There are some Mexican doctors that will shoot a video of your operation and give it to you to take with you for your own doctor to view. Ask your Mexican surgeon for that. I don't think once you have an American doctor and have seen them, they can refuse you care. If you need pre MGB procedures, ask for a general physical and get it. Your PCP likely knows very little about all the WLS available and knows less about the skills of the surgeons in Mexico. Your American PCP will be astonished at your success. I am sure others here will have some good insight too. -
Where does everyone live? (General area)
Accenda replied to it'sonlythefirststep's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m doing pretty well! Recovery was super quick for me. When they say to start walking ASAP in the hospital, they mean it. I think it helped a lot. Sutures healed super quick, no complications for me outside of gnarly reflux. All in all, loved them!! Good luck! -
Hey There! So i got sleeved in 2012 lost weight for 6 months, then stopped. Never got to goal weight and didnt start gaining again until this last year. I went to a bariatric surgeon yesterday and he was awesome. He told me my sleeve hasnt stretched but rather I was sleeved incorrectly and the original surgeon left me with a large pouch thats why I stopped losing so quickly after thr first 6 months. He gave me the option of getting resleeved or converting to a bypass although he recco.ends the bypass. Im leaning towards resleeving. Im scared of rny complications and i feel like the vsg is less invasive. What do yall think? Im currently 238lbs and want to get down to 160lbs at the most. He said with the sleeve I could potentially get down to 180lbs (which honestly Id be happy with) but with bypass 160lbs easily. Any suggestions or opinions? I had my endoscopy today! So glad that we can check that box. I did learn that I have a pretty progressive case of GERD. He could tell right away from the pictures. My mom came with me and thinks of this as a sign that it’s all meant to be. At 23, most people don’t except you to have GERD let alone a case that has already progressed pretty far. My primary doctor told me just last week to take an acid reducer and it’ll probably be fine. Learning young that I really do have this problem probably just saved me from complications and possible cancer if I waited another 20 years. Just another sign of how worth it pre-op is. The exciting this is that losing weight with a sleeve will improve things pretty quick! Now that I’ve shared...please help me figure out next steps! Foods to avoid? Things I should know about GERD?

Drs. Pleatman (MI), Gonzalez (Dallas) and Nicholson (Dallas)
DRoseman replied to ElseeG's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I haven't had any experience with them yet. I am going to have Dr. Pleatman do my surgery though. I've researched him and read all of the reviews about him and haven't found a bad one yet. A lot of people say that he has a very dry sense of humor. That's the most negative thing anyone has said about him. As for his surgical competence, I haven't read of anyone that had any complications or infections or any type of bad surgical experience with him. His office manager had surgery with him 3 yrs ago and hasn't had a single problem. I chose Dr Pleatman because of the reviews and he's the most affordable ($11,200) cash pay and I only live about 2 hours from him so he's relatively close. I hope that I have been somewhat helpful, and I wish you nothing but the best no matter who you choose. D.R. Potential Sleever
