February 2023 surgery dates!
DrinkMoreRadium replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had dry heaves after coming home and was not meeting my hydration goal. Definitely let your medical team know. The nurse upped my nausea medication, and I am slowly getting to where I should be. I found warm liquids caused less cramping. Have you tried broth yet? Oh I couldn't imagine being nauseous and heaving! That sounds horrible. I'm glad to hear you're doing better. I tried broth at the hospital and that was an immediate no after 1 sip. Lukewarm water is definitely the least painful option. Hopefully as inflammation starts to go down, the cramps will lessen. -
My favorite was black beans, blended with rotisserie chicken & a splash of chicken broth. it created a very high protein puree!

I think much like @ms.sss about snacking: it’s regular & planned. Portions & nutrition are considered. To me grazing is random eating of whatever you want, often emotionally/head hunger driven. Portion size or nutrition is if minimal or no concern. I think small meals are planned too & are more rounded like the part serve of a full meal. You might prepare three meals a day but only eat part of one meal at a sitting finishing it a little later on. Like have a first breakfast & then later have a second breakfast to finish the meal. When I was trying to stabilise my weight loss I was snacking about 5 times a day as I my meals were still smaller - couldn’tt eat more.. Once my meals became a little larger & equal to or closer to the recommended portion sizes, I didn’t need to snack as much for my needed calories & protein so I dropped 1or 2 of them a day. Oh & I eat more across a day & more regularly than I did before surgery too. (Was a meal skipper before.) But I eat better - healthier, more nutritionally dense foods - now & my body burns those calories more efficiently than before (thank you surgery).

Hi, I’m a year out from the Sleeve. Had it feb 23 rd 2022. I’m down almost 69 pounds, would like to lose another 11, that puts me back within normal weight range ( although at the top of the range) I’ve had to work for every pound that came off. My appetite is back to normal now I believe, so trying not to put any weight back on. I eat a lot healthier than I used to. Still have a sweet tooth but try to keep protein cookies around instead of regular ones. I don’t crave the super high fat foods I used to eat. Good luck to all just beginning their adventure! Nothing better than seeing pounds fall off!

P.P.S. we were told 60-70 grams of protein. 120 seems high to me - but if that's what your surgeon wants you to get, then fine - make that your goal. We were never told to count calories - and were in fact discouraged from doing so. This early out, you're not eating enough food to be concerned about calories. That'll come later.

I chose sleeve because I personally did not want any rerouting, I was self paid and thought it was safer to do the sleeve and I like having the option down the line should something happen.

Hello...I had gastric bypass surgery in October of 2012. Biggest mistake of my life. I got to my goal weight in 2014. I felt pretty good. All of a sudden I started waking up several times a night with severe panic attacks (I had been suffering from this prior to surgery). I was on the right meds for this and they were manageable. All of a sudden they came back with vengeance. I asked my med doc what was happening and she said she didn't know how to help me. Yes, a med provider said she couldn't help me and that the meds I were on were working before. So this shocked me and I was on the search for another doctor. Was having a real difficult time finding someone to help me. I finally found one and what a strange person he was. He was arguing with my primary doc about what meds I should be on. It went on too long. My attacks got more intense during the night. Then they began during the day. It was nonstop anxiety with depression. I joined a CBT program because I became suicidal. The psychiatrist with the program noticed right away that I had had gastric bypass. He knew immediately what was happening. My meds weren't absorbing. He put me on a liquid medication. One that made me gain weight in the first place (ugh). It took a while for the liquid med to work so I was suffering badly. It was hard handing on. CBT program was done and I had to check myself in for my depression and anxiety. They wanted to send me to the CBT program. I was like...I just finished it! Went home to suffer some more. I was losing more weight because everytime I ate, my anxiety got worse. Never will understand that and no one can explain that to me to this day. I would start shaking after I ate and anxiety is got very strong. It still happens. Months later I had a heart attack. 3 stents. I couldn't believe all this was happening. I finally found a great med provider and therapist. On a different liquid medication but my health has worsen. I have IBS so badly, lost a lot of hair. I'm taking my vitamins and protein but still losing hair. My mental state is worse then it ever was. I was handing and living with my mental health before surgery and now worse then ever. I had this surgery because I was 80 pds overweight. I had had my 1st heart attack before surgery and my primary doc said I should have the surgery. Worse decision of my life. Sorry for long story but I just want to know if anyone is having these same complications. I went back to my gastric surgeon and she said Gastric bypass doesn't affect your meds and because I had gained 8 pds back, she rudely said..."well you're absorbing something" and looked me up and down. At that point I was done with her. This has been a nightmare

I have a question. I had my surgery Dec 28. I had lost 60 pounds before talking to surgeon but I had hit such a plateau or I was only losing about a pound a week that I decided to try the surgery . The first three weeks I lost 28 pounds and doctor was thrilled. But since then I seem to be stuck again losing a pound or nothing each week. Ive been so concerned about the number of calories Im eating, but I realized I'm not getting even closee to the 120g of protein they wanted me to. I'm getting about half of that or maybe a little bit more, like 70-75g. My question is...could it be I'm not eating enough? Do I add protein to hit 120 and not be concerned with calories? Basically Im a bit frustrated because I'm back where i was before surgery only losing a pound a week. Looking for some insight.

February 2023 surgery dates!

So my clinic says to try to get 3 protein shakes a day for the first 14 days post surgery before moving to a pureed diet. Personally, I found the collagen protein fruit drinks easier to get down then a lot of the ready to drink or protein powders I already had on hand. Most were either too thick or sweet, I got samples of Braictric Fusion which only uses 4-6 oz and those were also a good one as it has 27g of protein and the smaller volume. I ended up ordering some of them last night. 😆 -
I just finished another virtual dietary appointment. I have to do one more in office appointment before they can to send the prior Auth to my insurance. I will not be having surgery on the 27th. That much is true, so I can stop the protein crap I've been eating and do a regular diet with real food. I just had an egg for lunch and I almost cried

Liquid diet how to taking it seriously [emoji17]
Victoria_Faith replied to Quetta89's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm on the liver shrinking diet and my sleeve is on 2/21. From what I understand there are several variations of these pre-surgical diets. In my case I am allowed to have 'free' foods like plain cucumbers, celery, and sugar free jell-o. I am also supposed to have three protein shakes per day, and one meal consisting of 4oz of a lean protein, and 1 cup of cooked veggies. I'm almost supposed to have 64oz of water as well to keep me hydrated. (It's been really hard to do the water thing on TOP of the shakes). Not going to lie - this has not been easy, but I keep thinking about all of the time I've spent with doctors over the past 6 months getting ready for this surgery, and all of the weight I've already lost and it keeps me going. It helps me to weigh myself every other day - seeing a few pounds come off every few days is an added bonus. In 8 days I have dropped 14 pounds. If you don't have as much weight to lose, you may see smaller numbers, but if you follow the diet they gave you, I promise you'll see results in the short term - and your surgery will be here before you know it! Don't worry - you got this!! -

Sleeve scheduled for 2/21/23. The day my life will change forever - I just know it. Day 8 of liver shrinking diet and feeling like my stomach is eating itself some days. I'm sick of jello and cucumbers, and these protein shakes are just too freaking sweet. Why do they make them so sweet, don't they know that we're trying to change our taste buds? Has anyone else found the Premier Protein clear "juice" drinks? How does your provider feel about them? I think I'll talk to my dietician about these. I have been ordering protein shakes by the case to stock up in preparation of this journey - for anyone post-op, how many shakes did you go through before you transitioned back to soft and solid foods? I have so many questions! Ahhhhhhhhh!!!! -

Grazing, is this normal?
Alex Brecher replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It's not uncommon for some people to continue to have the habit of snacking, even after weight loss surgery. However, it's important to make sure that the snacks you choose are in line with your bariatric diet and do not sabotage your weight loss goals. You can try to determine if the snacking is related to hunger or if it's a habit or emotional response. If you feel it's the latter, you may want to consider seeking the help of a therapist or counselor to work through any underlying emotional issues. Additionally, finding new activities to occupy your time, such as exercise or hobbies, can help reduce the urge to snack. Migraines and Pre-Op Diet
Alex Brecher replied to kwcabello's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Migraines can be triggered by a variety of factors, including diet, stress, changes in sleep patterns, and hormonal changes. It's not uncommon for people to experience an increase in migraines during a change in diet or lifestyle, such as the pre-op diet for bariatric surgery. If you're experiencing an increase in migraines, it's important to discuss this with your doctor, who can help determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment options. In some cases, they may also recommend keeping a food diary to help identify any specific triggers. -
As a diabetic, it's important to closely monitor your blood sugar levels and work with your healthcare provider to manage them effectively. Avoiding sugar-sweetened beverages and drinking water can help prevent sudden drops in blood sugar. Premier Protein, although it's not the best quality protein, offers several protein drink options that are free from caffeine, including their shakes in Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry flavors. Additionally, it may be helpful to eat small, frequent meals and snacks throughout the day to maintain stable blood sugar levels. It's important to work with your healthcare provider to develop a plan that works best for you.

Grazing, is this normal?
summerseeker replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would say that I graze all day too. I still have a good restriction, especially where meats are concerned, so to get my protein and enough calories in, I eat tiny meals all day. If don't manage to eat it, I will go back to it later. Protein yogurt for breakfast, Homemade lentil and vegetable soup for lunch, cheese and fruit snack in the afternoon. Meat or fish and vegetables for evening meal, nuts and seeds watching TV and a glass of milk before bed. It works for me and my constipation -
I tried premier protein shakes and the cake batter one is OMG amazing. Sent from my moto g power (2022) using BariatricPal mobile app

This is really about developing a way of eating that works for you. It’s only wrong if it doesn’t work. I don’t graze as such but I snack - usually 3 or 4 a day. I have specific range of things I eat at specific times - yep very routine & yep that anal. I don’t mindlessly snack. The snacks meet specific needs I have for protein, fibre, etc. My snacks don’t exceed my daily calories but actually help me meet my caloric & higher protein needs. I don’t track. Never had to & have always just done random checks about especially with new foods & to ensure I’m not over/under estimating or becoming complacent. I prep most of what I eat myself from scratch so I have a lot of control over what I eat. I snack on multigrain crackers & liverwurst, cheese, high protein yoghurt, nuts, protein bar. Occasionally I’ll snack on fruit (fresh or freeze dried), baked fava beans or chick peas, multi grain rice crackers & hummus (carefully as a slider), & peanut paste. I tend not to eat sweet foods at all so there’s very little sugar, sugar alternatives or artificial sugar in my diet. Bonus is the snacking between meals actually helps keep my acidic stomach under better control. Out of curiosity does anyone else find the time between eating gets less as the day goes on? I eat at 9am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm, 5pm (not always), 6pm & 7pm.

February 2023 surgery dates!
Nikkic53 replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had my gastric sleeve on 2/8/23 and I wish I would have known how good I would feel. I was so scared. Starting on day 3 I just keep feeling a sense of happiness that is amazing! I feel really good- no restriction with fluids, still on clear liquid. I’ve had no issues, no vomiting, no heartburn, no issues drinking or getting my fluids and protein in, I feel so freaking good, so happy, it’s as if the surgery just instantly reset my hormones LOL! Not one shred of buyers remorse. I hope you all have an easy recovery with no pain or issues just as I am having. -
I start my liquid diet on February 28th. I really scared about that. What are you using for your protein drinks? Sent from my SM-S908U using BariatricPal mobile app

Calories vs. Net Calories
smc124 replied to CHRISSER27's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m stalling right now too. Trying to ignore it and push through. The nice thing about this surgery is when a stall hits we have the confidence to know if we stick to our dr’s plan for it we know something going to give and we will start losing again. Not fun when we are in one but I find it so much less stressful than weight loss stalks prior to surgery. I’m a little over two months out and also active. My team doesn’t have us focus on calories on protein and hydration though from tracking on lose it i know I am generally consuming between 600-750 total calories and burning 500 in my dedicated workout time with my active calories burned on my Apple Watch barely ever finishing under 950. I think most of the weight loss we see in these early months is more closely a result of the restriction and absence of gherlin than anything. Also important to remember caloric deficit for pounds loss is itself a very imprecise and variable. Follow the instructions of your team and you’ll be through this before you know it. -

Black tea does have caffeine, though usually less than a cup of coffee. If your plan restricts caffeine, look for a decaf option, which they also sell.
