Question on hair loss
Spinoza replied to Candigrl1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine took until about 5 months to start and was/still is markedly increased general shedding. I think it's just about tailing off now at 8 months. I've had worse before when doing VLCDs - that seemed to be much heavier but not last as long. No actual patches but definitely visible thinning, e.g. at the temples. No regrowth as yet but fingers crossed that will come now, or at least when I hit maintenance! Good luck, hope yours isn't too problematic for you - definitely not my favourite side effect of the surgery. Well actually weight loss is my favourite side effect, so I'll take a bit of hair loss to get that! -
Hi Mel, I have read your post a couple of times and although I don't have experience to share, because I'm still in my initial weight loss phase, I wanted to thank you for telling us how you are - It's really helpful to read about how people do in the long term. You're right - 15lbs doesn't sound a lot at all because I presume you lost a stack of weight in 2016, but I totally get that you're not happy with that - I don't think I would be. The best thing is that not only have you called it at this point, you've come here where you will get loads of support and people with the same experience to help you! AND you've identified that it's your life stresses that are triggering it, so that's the first step to getting it sorted. I've seen people here who regained and who did various things to try to lose again. Would it be possible to get some help with your life issues first because then the eating might be easier to tackle, rather than being another issue to beat yourself up about? Then could you go right back to your post-op diet for a while? Empty the house of all those 'punishment' foods and fill it up with protein-based snacks. I absolutely love deli meats - chicken or turkey or pastrami slices that are easy to grab when you're grazing, tins of tuna you can make into a salad really quickly and that will fill you up nice and quickly. High protein yoghurt, etc. Start drinking more water if that has slipped. Finally it sounds like you really need to find another gym - could you do that? Or as the others say, a home exercise regime? That has a double benefit in that it should lift your mood a bit too. Do you have family or friends who you can talk to and who can support you? I don't mean nag, only you can decide it's time to switch things around again, but just to be there for you as you do it? I know when you aren't feeling good it can seem impossible to change things, and it's easy for some random stranger on the internet to try to fix things 'for you'. It's not like that here though - people will all identify with your current position, lots have been there and lots of us will be in the future. It would be brilliant if you could let us know how you do. Maybe do just one thing differently this week and see how that goes. All the very very best. 15lbs will be hard but it's totally doable isn't it? Your sleeve is still there and it will help you. So will we. xx

Another not losing post
Arabesque replied to mrsjo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Or is it just a stall? You can many of those while you are losing. A stall is just your body taking a break to readjust to all the changes: diet, weight loss, activity. Glad you’ve reached out to your team. They’ll be best placed to advise if you do need a tweak to your eating plan especially if you are following a more intensive exercise program. And they will be able to advise what specific foods (not just a blanket ‘add carbs’) are best to add to your diet. Congratulations are your progress so far. -
Question on hair loss
Arabesque replied to Candigrl1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It usually starts around the 3rd or 4th month & last about 3 months or so. When you start, how long it will last & how much you lose is an individual thing so you may be more or less the usual which is ok of course. You’ll start to notice an increase in the amount of hair you shed like when you wash or brush your hair. Remember this is just an acceleration of your natural hair shedding cycle. The hair you are losing is hair you would be losing. It’s just happening faster for a short time. Your still have new hair growing but just at it’s usual rate. Keep meeting your protein goals & taking your vitamins. Don’t stress about it - stress makes everything worse. It will pass. -

LilaNicole20 replied to Candigrl1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My experience has been increased shedding is the hair loss. It’s not falling out in clumps or anything like that. -
I wanted to ask everyone this question. When your hair loss started did it just start falling out alot all at once or did it start with some shedding that increased? Thank you

September 2022 surgery buddies

Awesome for your surgery date. I attend my third nutrition class in August to see about the post surgery diet. I am having my husband come along for that. But I wonder if I need to get a pre-approval from my insurance. I have only called to get the requirements and let my weight loss center know. I did submit my leave of absence to work though. Woohoo! -
I was thinking about your post and remembering how good it felt to hit this current weight when I was losing and how bad it feels to be at this weight when I've regained. The weight, of course, is the same. But my perception of myself is very different. I also need to connect with the person I was six years ago - what was I eating? what were the daily habits that supported the weight loss I was experiencing? how did doing those things affect my self-image? Thanks for sharing your experience and for hearing mine.

Trying to Reach Ideal Body Weight?
Spinoza replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My surgeon asked me what I wanted to achieve in my life (I said to get back to running again, and laughed inwardly as I said it but of course I am now)! He told me that the average loss was 60-70% of excess weight and I'm already past that. My final completely arbitrary goal is 160 lbs but honestly if I stopped losing today at 170 I would still view that as an *enormous* win, even with the chance of a regain in year 2 or 3, which happens to a lot of folks. My 'ideal' body weight is apparently 145 (just went to an online calculator), which I think would be too thin for me. I have no intention of restricting my diet in order to maintain some unachievable final weight that I have in my head - I've spent a lifetime doing that. I want to relax into my new life and enjoy it! -
Oh I love reading this thread - we all have different approaches and they're all valid. I told my husband and children, my work manager because I needed time off and couldn't lie, and nobody else, and am not going to. I do get the occasional twinge of guilt when family and friends comment on my weight loss but as far as they are concerned I am 'strictly calorie counting' (which technically speaking isn't a lie). I would rather live with that occasional guilt than deal with/respond to their reactions, whether supportive or critical. I don't like a fuss. That's just me though. To each their own Good luck whatever you decide.

@Meganatorthat's awesome!!! I've lost 80 total since March 2021, surgery was October and since then I have lost 66. 12# to goal for me, but I feel like you. See what my body does. Weight loss has slowed considerably but I'm feeling great. Not sure if size 10 pants will be where I get-it was a wish but 12s are fitting pretty well most of the time so that's good with me! Health is improved and hope to continue. Congratulations to you! -
This is the what one Hospital provided me for Gastric Bypass Medicare costs and requirements. One thing I noticed is "Consecutive diet counseling within 1 year of surgery" but did not specify a duration time for the diet. Anyway, thought some might derive some useful info from this. Trying to Reach Ideal Body Weight?
DonnaGS replied to maintenanceman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
No one on my Dr's office asked me what the goal weight is. I want to be healthy, I'm thinking 120-140. I was 120 after graduating from high school and after having both kids. I'm losing very slow (insulin resistance) I've heard after the "honeymoon" period its harder to loose. So I'm trying to keep my mind open. My surgeon said the average person losses 50 pounds, that would put me at a much healthier weight, but I would be chubby still. -
Reminds me of two myths: 1) WLS is the easy way out. (It's definitely not easy, It is a great tool but it takes dedication and hard work. A lifelong battle. Your husband will see that as you progress through your journey. Maybe he will come to understand what we are up against.) 2) WLS is a magic pill. (WLS only works long term if you work at it. Some people aren't willing to do what it takes which is their choice but their weight loss will cease early. Guessing calories is usually inaccurate so tracking nutrition helps see why or why not one is losing weight.).

Scheduled date 9/19 with Dr. Shillingford
jraymond270 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello everyone, I am nervous but excited at the same time regarding finally making the move to schedule my date and start my new weight loss journey. I was wondering if anyone has had their VSG with Dr. Shillingford and if your surgery was done in Palm Beach Gardens. I am as I mentioned nervous but know it will all turn out fine. Also what pre-op items did you have do complete prior to surgery. Thanks in advance for answering my questions. -
October surgery friends??
Meganator replied to LyricalWarfare's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Checking in as we're about to head into our 10th month post op together. Anyone else still around from October 2021? I'm now about 115lbs down total and less than 10lbs away from post-op loss of 100lbs. I'm getting close to getting out of the plus sizes when shopping (my top is usually a M/L, but bottoms have been slower to lose because lipedema). Still about a 1x downstairs. Less than 40lbs away from my doctor-perscribed long term goal of 180 (still obese), but I think I'm going to push further to see where I can get comfortable maintaining eventually. I'm thinking somewhere in the 140-160 area (still overweight, but whatever, right?), but we'll see! -

125 down is just amazing! I do get the occasional day of bad eating - not too many - but I try to get back on the horse the next day with protein first, which has worked so far. Vacations are difficult - eating goes all topsy-turvy. Good luck with the 10lbs this month - that was almost my maximum rate of loss right after surgery!! It's about a pound a week now but I'm happy with that. How much more would you like to lose in total @ForMyOhana? -
Unsupportive Husband
Queen ApisM replied to Amhuston82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm so sorry you are not getting the support you deserve at home. As someone mentioned, some of this could be coming from a place of fear - surgery is a big deal. I also think that people who haven't dealt with weight issues do not understand how truly complex physically and emotionally, and how our bodies are legitimately hardwired to make sustained weight loss difficult if not impossible for most. Has your husband met with or attended any information sessions with the surgeon? If he hasn't, perhaps you can get him to do that? I found that many of the information sessions touch on the science behind why this is the best way to get significant, sustained weight loss for many people. Having said that, even if he won't attend such a session (you can probably find virtual ones that you could attend from home) or won't listen to the information, you need to do what's right for you. You are the one living in your body. You are the one who knows your struggles and desires. Don't let other people dictate what you do. Unfortunately, it will be harder without good support, but that's what this board and similar communities can help provide. -
Unsupportive Husband
Arabesque replied to Amhuston82's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is far from an easy way out. I’ve never worked as hard with a diet as I did after my surgery. I changed what I eat & how I eat & did a lot of mental work to discover why I ate. I also did a lot of research into nutrition & discovered what worked for me & my body. We’ve all dieted & exercised in the past & successfully lost weight & like you we all put it back on too which is why we turned to surgery. We’re ridden that merry go round many times. For every person you find who says I followed this diet & lost weight & maintained you’ll find 1000s who tried it & failed. The diet industry is a multi billion dollar industry for a reason & there’s a reason the number of weight loss surgery procedures is increasing. By the way, exercising only contributes to 10-20% of the weight you have to lose (read somewhere recently that it’s really only 5-10% 🤷🏻♀️). We don’t say surgery is a tool for nothing. Just like buying a treadmill or a gym membership (for which you’d be congratulated), if you don’t use the treadmill or go to the gym nothing has changed & you won’t achieve anything. Same with the surgery, if you don’t use it you wont succeed. Many of the surgery benefits don’t last forever (like the lack of hunger, the restriction, etc.) which is why you have to take advantage of the time they do & establish new & better habits. Something we never did with other diets. You are making the decision to have surgery for excellent reasons: your health & your family. And you have years of weight loss/gain experience on which to base your decision. Sadly though, you may never convince your husband. Thinner people will never truely understand the challenges & anguish faced by those with weight issues. At least you’ll find plenty of support here. I wish you all the best. PS - Don’t be surprised if your husband & his family start sharing ‘horror surgery’ stories. It seems to be what happens next in plans to turn you off surgery. When they start with the friend of a friend of a friend, ask to speak to the one who had the surgery (they likely won’t exist or the story has been twisted) or share stories from here. -
Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?
New_me_2022 replied to armartin98's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi December surgery friends!! Just wanted to check on everyone and see how things have been going... As for me, I was sleeved on December 22 and have lost a total of 130 lbs. I am down to 185lbs and am working hard on meeting the "estimated goal" of 180 the doctor mentioned at my original consultation. The weight loss has slowed significantly (down to 1-2 lbs a week) but I've been able to incorporate exercising a few times a week when my schedule permits. Similar to @huskymama above, I got a running itch last week and decided to go on a 3 mile jog. Surprising to me, even after not running for years, I was able to do it. As for eating, I'm still not consuming bread, rice, pastas, or potatoes but have had the occasional potato chip here and there. Also, I'm happy to report I still have my love of pickles and popcorn so no taste bud changes there. I'm keeping my portions at 3-4 oz depending on the food type but have definitely learned to listen to my stomach when i'm full and walk away from the table. I truly hope everyone is doing well and making positive progress, regardless of what a scale says. -
I think if one has had the lapband already, better to go bypass since the potential gerd and esophagus irritation problems that the lapband itself can cause. Less future problems. Now if you never had the lapband, then I think a "virgin" sleeve's weight loss is really good, and probably less likely to cause future gerd problems compared to those who had the band first. Just my thinking, I could be wrong. I just know going from lapband to sleeve, it was a struggle as far as restriction. I did lose weight but it was hard and I never got below 160 lb with vsg because to me, the lapband had far more restriction than the sleeve. With the RNY, it is a totally different ballgame and no gerd.

November Surgery Buddies!!!
ForMyOhana replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
8 months in. More days that I feel good than bad. Weight loss slowed, probably due to summer vacations and not watching what I'm doing as well. Some days I feel like I "don't hit my limit "... in other words, I feel like I ate a lot today and the last few days. That scares me a little. I feel like I need a good reset. That said, I'm down about 125. My clothes are still feeling looser... to clarify, my new replacement pants are getting too loose. My ring is almost falling off. My arrhythmia... the reason for the surgery is nearly completely gone. So, good stuff. My bellybutton gets irritated and seems to weep... gross... I'm not sure why. Will be talking to the nurse tomorrow. Need to just refocus and reset though. I'd like to lose another 10 in the next month which will require me to get back on track... I'm in a wedding. I have 2 more vacations coming up, so I gotta be good. I should be able to get more activity in which will be a plus. Walking and hiking. Good luck everyone!
