    Disturbing Realization

If your deep love of food is really in the eating, think about what you really love eating. If I am honest about my deep almost unrequited love prior to surgery about food, it was sweets and carbs. Looking at baking books was like porn to me, and I wanted to bake it all and eat it all. I I baked, I just had to taste taste taste and NO AMOUNT was ever satisfying. Ever. 10 cookies might make me feel sick and I stop, but not the first nor the 10th cookie was truly ahhhhh, satisfying, had enough. When I learned that our cravings come from our gut bacteria, and certain ones want sugary foods, I knew I could do a serious reset with my diet and this with my gut population at the same time, by avoiding all sweet tastes after surgery, when I wouldn’t be eating real food for a while. I used only unsweetened, unflavored protein powder. Absolutely nothing with even a sweet taste at all. I mixed it with raw milk or full fat Greek plain yogurt. Eventually I added veggies and meats to my diet, eggs, beans. I never added in anything sweet. My nutritionist had me off fruit for 6 months. so I lost the desire to eat the sweets I used to crave. But I kept the desire to interact with them. It’s a bit weird. Bear with me. I still love to bake. My family loves to eat it. I get pleasure out of smelling what I bake. If I were to eat sweet carbs, I feel a bit ill Nd my vision gets bad and I feel really off. So I have zero desire to feel bad, so I don’t eat it. But sometimes I will sniff it and thst is heaven for me - magically without any desire to taste it. I don’t know why this has changed for me. But it is wonderful. I get pleasure from smelling foods I used to want to eat! For real. I told you it was weird. I still “love food” and getting my hands in it and making it and serving it. And smelling it. But I don’t even want to put it in my mouth. And as weird as thst is, I am very happy about it.
  2. My phase 2 was full liquids as well. Lots of protein shakes, strained soups, a little yogurt and SF Popsicles.
  3. My phase II was full liquid. I drank protein shakes mostly but also made yogurt drinks (watered down greek yogurt and a scoop of protein powder). Also all clear liquids from previous phase. Mushy or pureed foods was phase III.
  4. We don't have any idea what his phase II includes. Mine was semi-liquid, high protein yogurts, refried beans with a little melted cheese, cottage cheese, strained soups, sf puddings.

    August bypassers/sleevers

AJP try putting unsweetened sliced strawberries or blueberries on the yogurt, maybe you won't miss the swwtness so much. You could mesh them with a fork if you can't the fruit whole.

    August bypassers/sleevers

I drank the Siggi’s drinkable yogurt. It was sweet, but less sweet than protein shakes, and it had the tart edge and fruit flavor (but no seeds/solids).

It's on my liquid stage. Pack instant with 8oz fairlife skim milk. Very runny lol. Been breakfast every day last 2 weeks. Tried oikos zero couple different flavors. To sweet I can only eat a couple spoons of it. I don't like plain /vanilla Greek yogurt. Loved fruit on bottom so if I can't eat that I don't want it. Same way with tea. Can't have my southern sweet tea so I don't drink tea.
  8. Find several flavors you like a change them,up, that way you won't be saying " oh no. Not vanilla again!" Try premier protein caramel, Muscle milk blueberry,or. strawberry- banana smoothis, they are also made with Greek yogurt.

    Nutrition help

I'm just past the 5 weeks mark too. I was cleared for soft foods and purees so I switched to egg whites (14 grams protein) and then steamed fish in V8 like Haddock (19 grams right there). I put protein powder in my yogurt for snacks (keeps the fat low and protein boost high). Throughout the day I'll sip on half of a premiere protein. I'm just hitting it.

    Here I grow Again

Here I grow again! I had surgery three years ago. It was a roller coaster ride, like everyone else. I did the pure liquid no carb pre op diet. I underwent surgery and after the initial feeling of having been through a bar fight, came out the other side ready to go! I was compliant with the whole thing, It was an amazing experience as the weight seemed to just melt off. . . until it didn't. I got down to about 250 pounds and hit a very long plateau. In response I went to the gym. . . A LOT. I managed to drop down to 210 pounds and decided to go in for skin removal surgery. Things went backwards from there. The plastic surgeon was HORRIBLE. He didn't place a drain, I developed a seroma the size of a pringles can (1 liter) and had an incision infection. The seroma kept filling up even after I went to a general surgeon to have it cleaned out and a drain placed. I was not able to exercise because of the pain. Old habits die hard. I became sedentary again, and I've gained back up to 257 pounds. Bad eating habits. A non supportive spouse. Too many carbs. Not enough exercise. Seroma is still there. I went back to my PCP yesterday and weighed in. Much to my horror I was at 257. When I looked at my weight history, 30 pounds of that has slowly crept up since January of this year. Compliance cannot be overstated. I went out and bought protein bars and yogurt. I'm cutting out any and all alcohol, and back to counting carbs. Since I'm a full time law student (at 46 years old with six kids at home) finding time to exercise regularly can be a challenge. Today I'm going to work some time after class into my schedule to go to the university's gym for at least 45 minutes to an hour each day (I have class 3 days a week). I didn't go down this long, and difficult road just to wind up back where I started. Glad to find this forum

    Purée do’s and dont’s

Refried beans Cottage Cheese Soft scrambled eggs with shred cheese (mashed very very small and soft) Greek Yogurt Blended Soups Egg salad with Greek yogurt Mash potatoes (if allowed on your plan) Blended veggies Very soft and blended meatloaf I kind of blended the soft and purred stage together because I'm really affected by texture of things. But a lot of what you can eat can be blended or mashed to give the purred consistency. Don't be afraid to reach back out to your NUT if you are unclear about what your plan allows.

    Bingeing with Bypass

^^^I've had hungry hungry hippo days where nothing appeases me but to add a "semi-crap snack". I'm ALWAYS appalled at how many calories there are in this snack and for such relatively little volume. And invariably, it throws off my meal schedule where I'm not hungry and I have to fight myself, not to say, "Well, I've already blown it and am not that hungry--therefore I shall continue with just another little crap-filled, high-calorie snack. LOL. And these are so-called HEALTHY snacks: Quest Protein Chips and any kind of dip...even made with Greek Yogurt Parmesan Cheese Crisps with Peanut or Almond Butter Union Cafe Bar Nuts (homemade with Truvia) Cheese/Salami/Pepperoni Apples & Peanut Butter Almonds and Damn-Near Anything Cocoa Almonds and ALL.THE.THINGS!!!! (I feel like I'm yelling. Am I yelling?) Hummus on my finger...or with veggies Did I mention full-fat cheddar cheese of ANY KIND? Real Ranch or Onion Dip with any veggie or pepperoni chip And the list could go on all day.
  13. I don't think I could have prepared for the loss of appetite that happens with surgery. I'm not hungry, haven't been hungry since 8/5 - the day before my surgery. I thought it would be awesome not being hungry. And in a way, it is. I wasn't prepared for how its not. I hate eating right now. I don't struggle doing it, I just don't want to do it. There is no joy in it, it takes up my time, it occasionally hurts if i try to rush it. Honestly would like to take a day off and not eat anything and would be perfectly content but I know thats not what's best for my body. So I guess I'll force down the protein drinks, soups, and yogurts today. I hope this melancholy regarding food goes away at some point.
  14. Not sure if pureed food is included in full liquids, I know it was not in my program. In my mind full liquids are just that, liquids. Broth, protein shakes, popsicles, a little plain greek yogurt and water was all I had for the first 2 weeks. You need to be really careful since you sleeve is healing.

    Struggling

Focus on things that count for both fluids and protein: Protein shakes, protein water, broth with added protein powder, yogurt, etc. That's the best way to hit your numbers in the beginning when you can't get too much down. Good luck!

    Struggling

I'm two weeks out from my sleeve surgery and really struggling. If I get enough liquids in me I can't get anything else in - yogurt, applesauce, pudding, nothing. If I eat, I can't enough liquids in and I'm dehydrated. I haven't lost since my pre-op liquid diet either. I'm walking everyday and doing everything I should. Any advice?

3 days post op, could eat a horse.

I was very hungry. From my post op diet I chose the thickest things I could-a tablespoon of peanut butter, 2 tbls of hummus, very thick Greek yogurt. Anything like soup or applesauce left me hungry. I pretty much ate hummus 3 tines a day. Oatmeal that was thick was ok too (weight control oatmeal)

    August 2018 sleeve surgery!!

I get a pain when I am eating yogurt. It’s the oikos strawberry yogurt. I was eating a spoonful , so decided to take tiny little bites and it didn’t hurt. I tend to forget I should be going really slow. I had surgery on the 21 of August. I was 294 that day. Today I’m 285. Not even a week yet and I’m seeing some loss. I don’t see a difference, but it’s good to see scale go down.
  19. Maybe try soft scrambled eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese, refried beans. All are recommended during my upcoming puree phase. Good luck!
  20. Hey all just wanted to update you on what’s going on lately. I reached my first goal of 175. I struggled with a loooooonnnnnngggggg stall. So I went back to the basics. Protein shakes, yogurt, water. Now I’ve crushed my first goal and on to the final. 150! I am at 164 and so happy. Thanks for reading. Hw 289 Sw 243 Cw 164 Goal w 150
  21. Just from my experience, I was on protein shakes and broth for three weeks after surgery. When it was time to transition to soft foods...I was allowed yogurt and eggs, and work up from there...I was able to handle it okay.

    Surgery part 2 performed 8/22/18

Slept with body pillow on my side somewhat last night. Didn’t sleep great. Trying to avoid pain tabs if possible but have taken them at night. I’m finding that I’m having “mind” hunger vs physical hunger. Like I could go for a Krystal burger but not hungry for one. Hooefully go to yogurt, strained soup, protein shake after day 4 according to post op plan.

    Gastric Bypass-No Weight Lost

Ok, I will most definitely try that. I was released from the hospital on soft foods so I have scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, canned chicken or tuna, yogurt, things like that and then my protein shakes. I use baritastic to track everything. Calories range from 500-700. Maybe my calorie intake is to high, but its pretty consistent with the paperwork the dietitian gave me.
  24. I am now at 3 weeks post-op with a gastric sleeve. My pre-op weight was 355.5 and I now weigh 344. I thought the highest loss was at the beginning, but I have been at 344 for almost 2 weeks. I am at soft foods now: scrambled eggs, refried beans, bean soup, milk, soft veg like squash, cooked onions, tomatoes, etc. Also Greek yogurt. I am now hitting about 600 calories average; a bit more or less some days but definitely can feel the new stomach restriction and try to avoid feeling it. My only problem right now, is because I needed 2 weeks of Lovenox injections, the whole of my pannus is purple and red, and has been very tender. I see the surgeon for a second follow up and know she will let me know if the bruising is a problem, but the lack of weight loss has me so down. Any insights? I keep up with my diet and exercise on myfitnesspal, so cannot figure out what I am doing wring. 😔
  25. Adding protein to anything I am eating or drinking is a lifesaver. It not only helps you reach your goals, it also takes the worry and stress off of it because it will just become a habit. I add the powder to most everything, even things that already contain protein. Add it to yogurt, soup, jello, etc.
