Scar tissue causing almost impossible fills 9 yrs post-op
WLSResources/ClothingExch replied to Firebolt's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Methinks you're doctor is an idiot for saying that. There is no statute of limitations on weight gain. The three-year mark may indicate good chances for maintaining happily ever after, but that's not at all the same as a guarantee or magic. Maintaining will always require vigilance. @@Firebolt, alas, all I can offer is good wishes for your research and decision-making. -
Last week I lost over -5 lbs and was doing amazing. I felt great and everything was on track for this week. Tuesday morning I stepped on the scale and was still holding steady at my Friday weight. THen I took my son to the movies and decided to partake in some good old buttered popcorn. I didn't eat a lot, but was surprised that I was able to eat as much as I did. Most definitly a slider food. Then to my horror when I woke up on Wednesday morning, the scale should more than a +2 lbs increase! I was in shock. How could introducing one food into my daily routine off set me so much? Was it the salt? The butter? The absorption of the popcorn? I've spent the last 48 hours trying to detox, drink lots of water, make good choices and to my dismay when I got on the scale this morning, discovered I was still up +.8 lbs from last weeks weigh in. While it's not a lot, it's my first actual weight gain since surgery and very sad for me. I work so hard to lose weight that to see a number go up, even slightly brings back fat kid PTSD. I also noticed something interesting, I always gain/slow down dramatically right before my cycle and I am just a couple of days from my cycle which I think might be a major contributor to this situation. When I really started doing my homework this is what I discovered about popcorn: "Ordering a medium popcorn and soda combo from a major national movie theater chain is the equivalent of eating three McDonald's Quarter Pounders with 12 pats of butter, according to a new study by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. According to laboratory analysis conducted by the Center for Science and Public Interest (CSPI), the concessions from Regal, the country's biggest movie chain, have 1,160 calories and three days worth - 60 grams - of fat. Regal said that the medium popcorn had 720 calories and the large had 960, but CSPI's tests found those numbers to be understated. A small popcorn at Regal had 670 calories - the same as a Pizza Hut Personal Pepperoni Pan Pizza. Even if you share a small popcorn - it's still about a day's worth of saturated fat per person, according to CSPI." - http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-204_162-5704044.html SO needless to say, I'm spending the next week drinking a LOT of water, making good eating choices, taking my vitamins. Not really sure if there is much else I can do but be more observant. I am at my primary goal, but my secondary goal is becoming more and more important to me everyday!!! I had a tummy tuck four years ago-it was a great decision. After a csection for twins, my stomach was never the same. The recovery is much worse than having the band, though. My only warning is that the surgery has a "rolling pin" effect...all of your weight gain travels upward. I gained all of my weight in my arms and upper body. So...it doesn't make the weight disappear-it just shifts it!

I had my gastric bypass wls on 10/17/14 and yesterday I found out I was pregnant, yay! Me and my husband are so happy. I'm just nervous about the weight gain, getting the proper nutrition and having a healthy baby. I'm curious... is there anything I should watch out for, health tips, pregnancy wls advice?? I'm new to this and would appreciate the input. Thanx!!

Obesity! Will that word follow me to the grave :(
WL WARRIOR replied to RJ'S/beginning's topic in Rants & Raves
I recently got to see my past and current medical records because I am trying to overturn my insurance company's decision to cut me off since I will soon be going over their income limit with my salary raise. Before I tell you what I found in my records, let me take a moment to highlight the real truth: I am moderately healthy. The only physical/mental issues I am still plagued with are hypothyroidism, mild to moderate anxiety/depression, and a mild skin condition. However, my records indicate that I suffer from a long list of diseases and inflictions. Many of these were problems I had over 15 years ago and that I consider conditions that I have RECOVERED from. I totally understand your repulsion with being labeled OBESE. My gosh, you have gone through sweat and tears just to get that ugly label off your plate. But the truth is that you will probably carry that label the rest of your life even if you became anorexic. I compare this to my "drug addict" label that I have to carry around even though I've been clean for 15 years. About 17 years ago, I had terrible inflammation in my joints because of rheumatic fever. The Vicodin that was prescribed not only alleviated this pain, but also instantly relieved me from anxiety and depression. It was like letting go of the100 pounds of bricks that had weighed me down for over 10 years. I felt optimistic, awake, energetic, and hope for my future. It took over a year to finally get help because I did not want to be forever labeled as a drug addict. I wasn't in a back alley shooting up heroin with dirty needles after not sleeping for days or taking a bath for a month. However, that is the image many people get when you have a drug addict label. Even at NA meetings, you have to present yourself as a drug addict. You can present yourself as a recovering drug addict, but the truth is that you will be recovering the rest of your life even if you never touch substances again. As a teacher that works with children with special needs, I could debate endlessly the pros and cons of labeling. Like lipstick lady mentioned, a label does tell a doctor what you have been through and an awareness that certain symptoms have a chance of returning again. A doctor shouldn't prescribe codeine syrup for my bronchitis due to my past substance abuse tendencies. Likewise, a doctor probably shouldn't prescribe Zyprexa (for depression) either, since a side effect is about a 20 pound weight gain. One could say that having this kind of opinion helps me to feel better about turning in my appeal with all my past health conditions and diseases. If they took the time to really read through my past medical file, they should be able to gather that I'm not afflicted with most of these problems anymore or not to the same extent. My doctor has filled out the insurance paperwork already and has informed me that she has put all my past health conditions onto the current health problem report. I would like to believe that she did this because she believes that past medical problems will always stay with a patient or because related symptoms could someday return. However, I think she may have done it so that she can continue getting paid. -
When nuts are available, I have trouble resisting them. Even worse, I keep going back for more until they're done. And THAT'S dangerous! During the first 18 months it didn't seem to matter, but in maintenance, it may cause some weight gain which then needs to be handled. Almonds are more filling, and easier for portion-control than peanuts. Bottom line: nuts are okay if you can keep them in moderation, but that can be difficult.

Cannot lose no matter how hard I try!!
OutsideMatchInside replied to yeshello's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you low carb, then eat carbs. Your liver gains glycogen/water weight and you can go up 2-10 pounds over a weekend just eating carbs. If you are steadying intaking carbs, then you weight will remain steady. The weight gain after eating carbs following a low carb diet is not true fat gain, at least not initially. You just have to make a lifestyle change, it has to be a lifestyle not a diet. You don't cheat with a lifestyle change. It is hard for everyone. You can get a burger without the bun at a fast food resturant, make them wrap it in lettuce. Fries are my weekness, there is no low carb substitute, but you just have to decided if fries are worth being fat. Good luck! -
Recommendation for Cream during weight loss to avoid stretch marks, etc
KateBruin replied to TrishL's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
From the research I’ve done, the weight gain creates the stretch marks but losing weight causes them to be visible. The more I lose, the more I “get”. I have them from inner thigh almost to my knees. -
How do you tell your friends?
natashabands replied to natashabands's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I'm pretty good support system-wise. Literally five people in my family have gotten the same exact surgery (including my mother) so I can probably go to one of them for help. It's just that I'm horrible with keeping secrets and how do you hide eating habits when your two closest friends love to eat? It's just frustrating because I KNOW my two closest friends won't understand. Not because they're skinny, but because I've never mentioned a thing about my weight loss or weight gain to them. Yet at the same time, they're probably the ones that deserve to know. I can tell I'm getting nowhere with this. Thanks for all the suggestions though. -
Definitely much better! Pre-op, I definitely had "stress incontinence" as it's been defined above. And now, 60+ pounds lighter, I don't. I'm not saying if I sneeze or cough a lot that I don't "leak." But it's nothing like the embarrassing condition I'd gotten myself into with weight gain. It was even a qualifying comorbidity for surgery / insurance.

Congratulations on both your new baby girl, (beautiful and I like her name!), and you small amount of weight gain. Best wishes! Karen

Please don't feel guilty for depriving your baby. The baby will rob mom of everything that he/she needs. That means, if you weren't consuming enough Calcium (for example) the baby will not hesitate to take it from your body (i.e. your bones). Also, it is well documented that you only need an additional 300 calories/day to grow a baby and that need exists mainly in the 3rd trimester. Finally, excess weight and too fast weight gain is stressful to both mom and baby. I think you made a good decision for yourself and your baby. IMHO

Ab stitching is what they do to correct any separation of the abs that may have happened, usually from pregnancy or weight gain. They literally sew your abs back up. -

Pregnant with the lap band!
Alicia521 replied to Frisky's topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
I'm not pregnant but plan on trying for #2 next year. There is a great website for tracking food and helping manage weight gain if you aren't already using it (babyfit.com) I plan on using it when I get pregnant again to track everything. Best of luck to all of you band mommy-to-be's -
I heard on Oprah not long ago that for every 30 pounds a man loses, he gains an inch of penis. So, this could probably help some men who have lost a lot of penis from weight gain. LOL.

Too easy ?
theotherfatgirl replied to theotherfatgirl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I absolutely understand I don't take it offensively ! Lol there is a motivate behind the madness. When I am ready I think I'll change it but since I'm still pre op I feel like I need to remember why I'm starting this. I was 200 lbs at 18 went up to 385 by my age now which is 26. My mom died when I was 18 and I just gained like crazy and I think because I was on my own right out of high school with everything no one wanted to tell me. I felt like no one would hold me accountable for my weight gain when they should of. So I feel like the other fat person that you say it's okay because of this or you have a pretty face so it doesn't matter. when in reality it really did matter and I need to hold myself accountable. There is a motivation in there lol but I do appreciate the suggestion and am not offended at all. -
Getting nervous about Tricare North
catdaddy replied to Bring It On's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't have any documented weight loss program history ether. I told them about using colored weight loss pills and how I always battled weight gains. It's real how you tried to loose weight. Because you think you don't have anything to write down you really do. State your efforts with estimated dates. Tricare says Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig are used as good documentation. I joined Weight Watchers because of the requirement but it was the same dates as my three month doctor supervised diet. For me Tricare didn't check if I was a member or not. The following is straight out of the Tricare requirements. It will all be good for you so try not to worry to much. TRICARE will cost share any of the following open or laparoscopic bariatric surgical procedures: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass Vertical banded gastroplasty Gastroplasty (stomach stapling) Adjustable gastric banding (i.e., adjustable LAP-BAND®) If you meet all of the following conditions: You're at least 18 years old or you must provide documentation of completion of bone growth. You were unsuccessful with non-surgical medical treatments for obesity. Your medical records must show your failed attempts. Diet programs, such as Weight Watchers®* and Jenny Craig*, are acceptable methods of dietary management, as long as there are monthly clinical visits with your doctor and medical documentation of your participation and your progress throughout the course of the dietary program. *These programs are not covered by TRICARE. Physician-supervised programs made-up of only weight-loss medication management, do not meet this requirement. You have proof of one of the following: A body-mass index greater than or equal to 40 kilograms per meter squared (kg/m2); or A body-mass index of 35-39.9 kg/m2 with one clinically significant comorbidity, including but not limited to, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnea, Pickwickian syndrome, hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity-related cardiomyopathy, or pulmonary hypertension. TRICARE does not cover the following services: Office visits solely for the treatment of obesity Non-surgical procedures for treatment of obesity Nutrition and diet counseling Biliopancreatic bypass (jejunoileal bypass, Scopinaro procedure) Gastric bubble or balloon Sleeve gastrectomy Gastric wrapping/open gastric banding Unlisted procedures -
Hi all, Merry Christmas, I hope it is okay and does not offend anyone. I thought I would update this post. I saw a neurologist and after tests etc, bottom line is they found a slight abnormality in my left temporal lobe. We are watching it and I am now taking meds but other than some weight gain and NO desire to exercise it seems to be fine, but I was fine up to the day I had the seizure too. So all in, does not seem to have anything to do with my sleeve! Good news. Take care

Can't Seem To Get A Straight Answer :(

Thanks! I think you should be fine with the weight gain. Do they advise that you lose weight?? My sister did the 6 month supervised diet, gained weight each month, and was just approved I wouldn't worry too much. Good luck! -
Just a bit off topic, but as a newly banded - still sipping fluids all day long- member of this forum, I have a question. Those of you who are eating too much because you haven't had your first fill yet, do you mean you are actually able to eat like you did before the band? I'm just curious because just the idea of chewing something and swallowing it and not feeling like someone put a golfball in my chest sounds so great right now.... I'm all for the GOALS idea too! I just don't know yet what's realistic since I'm still dragging around my hospital weight gain! What's UP with that anyway ?? Good morning .. and TGIF! Judy

Hi All!! My name is Lisa Marie, but you can call me Lisa... I am 27 years old and currently live in Las Vegas , NV. I like most of on here have struggled with my weight. I have tried every diet, diet pill and starvation to lose weight. I did at one time lose over 100 pounds while I was on the Aktins diet. However, I learned that once I put a peice of bread in my mouth it would be hello weight gain. LOL I am tired of hearing people tell me, "OMG if you lost weight, you will be gorgous, etc. " I am tired of my weight being the topic of discussion with my "skinny" friends. I just want to be healthy and happy and maybe find love, is that too much to ask for? I want to shop at "regular" stores and not have to spend double the amount of money on a pair of jeans.. LOL anyways.. I am scheduled for surgery August 8th, 2008. So 8-8-08 is my day where my second chance begins. I had my seminar July 9th, went for blood work and EKG on July 23rd, was approved July 30th and hello August 8th. :Banane34:  I am soooo excited but yet soooo scared, I come on the site and site for hours reading the forum.. and I think I am scaring myself no reason. Anyways, I am to a huge GIANTS fan and can not wait for the season to begin.. We are taking it all the way again this year!!!!! Well I am excited to get to know everyone during this life long changing journey! Hope everyone has a great weekend. :huh2:

I had to reply because I was due for my first AF since my surgery on the 6th August and it is 5 days late. I've not had the usual spotting, weight gain or bloating before hand, so I'm thinking that because of the weight loss and surgery our hormones go all out of whack. I'm sure as time goes on it should even it self out.

Does the fact i had eroded lapband show intent to lose weight??
Mariposa Bella replied to Mariposa Bella's topic in Insurance & Financing
Thank you Lulugirl. I am having the same issue, was self pay in Mexico because of a low bmi, and now on the same boat. I was told I need to gain about 15 lbs. I cannot afford to do self pay at this time or I would go do it. Maybe my friend the accountant can loan me the money, lol....It is very frustrating, he is correct, I need to eat right and excercise, so why can't I do it??? Seems like the harder I try, the more I set myself up for failure. I think I'm depressed because of the weight gain. I refuse to give up, someday I will Killl the fat monster. I wish you luck and advice you to do something about the weight gain now, it is 30 lbs, do not wait until it is 60 like me. Stay in touch
