  1. Hi, I could use any insight or encouragement. I'm 2 years post VSG and had been maintaining 138 for about a year, I think (I was briefly slightly lower but I don't count that). I'd noticed it getting a little tougher to maintain my weight. I recently had an egg retrieval procedure (as in IVF, although I actually froze the eggs for later), and I'm planning on more similar procedures. They told me I would gain 3-5 pounds of water weight and should lose it within a week after the procedure. Well, I gained 5 lbs. (up to 143) and even two weeks later had lost nothing. I'm afraid my body was just looking for an opportunity to gain weight back and won't be able to lose the weight--and I especially don't want to keep gaining more weight with each additional procedure. I decided to start dieting, and after 4 or 5 days I've gained a half pound. I'm doing some SlimFast and adding some Quest snack bars and a tiny amount of fruit. Maybe that's the wrong diet but I don't know what else to do? I've never had to attempt deliberate weight loss since my surgery. I have to think my caloric intake was already pretty low to begin with (and maybe also my metabolism?), but I didn't even count--does anyone have an estimate? I think I'm a special case due to my bariatric status, and it didn't seem like the fertility practitioners had any knowledge to help me.
  2. I get dumping syndrome from even 1 chocolate chip! Or from even skim milk or anything with sugar elements in it! I get the sweats feel like I am gonna puke and feel like I have the very worst hangover I ever had for an hr or two. As far as weight gain well grazing is the most common reason or eating past full.
  3. Sugar doesn't make me dump - it's the fat in steaks and fried eggs, etc. I learned that I can have sugar with no problems at all. However, with this new discovery means weight gain, which I did during the holidays. But that is OK as I was underweight and looked sick. Now I'm where I should be but I have to be VERY careful not to overdo it on the sweets.
  4. Congratulations, you look wonderful, thank you for your picture and motivation. Can you imagine how great it will be on the next months for you... How are you feeling? Everything going down okay? How was.the pain? I'm soon to get my surgery and truth be told, feel like hell with a thyroid condition that caused more weight gain, now insulin which made it worse and can't breath too well. Going to my cardiologist appointment soon. Hoping this surgery can make it all better. Good luck and keep us updated.
  5. My story is a bit different than many people's as my weight gain was caused by something that typically causes people to lose weight. I have Addison's disease, which went undiagnosed for nearly 10 years. Addison's disease is sort of the opposite of thyroid disorders that many of my fellow sleevers have suffered... Essentially, people with Addison's don't produce enough cortisol, and this causes them to feel tired all the time. I started suffering from the symptoms around 18, but it did not become full-blown until I hit 20. Because I was tired all the time, I needed a way to stay awake, and resorted to eating in order to keep myself going. That's when the weight started coming. I gained more in particularly stressful periods when I needed more energy. I went from 127 lbs (and working as a promotional model during my freshman year of college) to 175 lbs, where I had leveled out at 23 for a few years. Then I moved to France, and ended up in a very stressful job where I mainly worked from home (less activity, more stress = more eating) and went up to 190. I was finally diagnosed with the Addison's last year, but unfortunately, the medicine (cortisol) inspired an additional weight gain last year that put me up to 230. It has been particularly hard for me in France because there are simply not many overweight people in this country and it is nearly impossible to find plus-sized clothing (I have to go over to London). It also did not help that a company which I had previously worked for in the US (and had an amazing track-record with including several sales awards) flat out refused to hire me because I "did not have the right look". Plus, with last year's rapid weight gain, I couldn't even recognize my own face in the mirror anymore. Nothing was helping to lose the weight either (not 2 hours of gym per day or the strict organic diet I had been following for 3 years)- I was just gaining without stopping. I stopped wanting to meet people or see my friends because I became so ashamed of my weight, and tired of everyone I met asking me when the baby was due. I also started to have a lot of pain in my feet (I have long, thin bones), and could no longer ski or iceskate or even walk long distances. So the doctors decided that sleeve surgery was my only option as diet and exercise alone were not working and because if I kept gaining, I would no longer be able to walk at 30 years old... The decision to do the surgery gave me hope that weightloss was an option for the first time in a long time. I went through with the surgery on 21 March 2011 at the American Hospital of Paris with Dr. Hobieka. I have lost 8 kg (which is almost 18 lbs) in the first 2 weeks, and am now stalled out in week 3. I'm excited to see the results and to get back to 135 (which I have not been since 19). Here's to wishing everyone else luck with their sleeves... :-)

    Rice, Pasta, Bread, etc

I was told by my nutritionist to check out the Great Low Carb Bread Co. Wow am I glad I did! They make it all-breads, pastas, rice...whatever you want. There's no risk of dumping or weight gain. Just stick with a serving and you'll be good. It's all about portion-control when it comes to anything with our new lifestyle. I was sharing in another post on here that the other night, I mastered the art of "bariatric friendly mac and cheese" and tbh I couldn't be happier. In addition to that company, there's a whole slew of low carb and carb-free brands of pastas, breads, etc to try. I've tried several and while pricey, they're definitely worth it if you need that occasional "pasta fix." FYI if you're wondering about sauce, Ragu and Prego both make no sugar added sauces that are quite good! Good luck!
  7. I've had my lap band for about 5 years now. At first I was loosing weight slowly (due to other separate health problems) then last summer, i lost a huge amount of weight very quickly due to extreme stress, and where my port is I was having discomfort, so i went to my new doctor who told me I had to gained weight and that would help with the discomfort, but did not want me to gain too much. I am 5'9 and I was 135lbs and he told me i needed to be at 160lbs. He is not my original doctor that did my surgery and fills. We moved to a different state. Over the last 5 months I (reluctantly) have gained the weight the doc told me to, and even though some of the port discomfort is gone, I now have constant heart burn and acid reflex and pain under my ribs after i eat (I had my gallbladder removed last year) or drink too much I do not drink any alcohol, soda or things like that mainly water tea sometimes and coffee and food has been getting stuck more than it use to. It is extremely hard for me to get back into the doctor, but do see my family primary monthly. I am wondering what type of tests should i ask my primary to order to make sure everything with the band is ok. And if anyone else has had similar problems and what helped. I'm thinking of trying the apple cider vinegar to help with heart burn acid reflex but am open to trying something

    WLS and Eating Disorders

I know this is an old thread. Just hope to get this topic going again. Yes i went to an eating disorder clinic...Insurance would not cover. Third year My bariatric professionals program view me as one of their most successful patients. What they don't understand Is I have disordered thinking around my weight loss I'm obsessive in my exercise ( exercise is viewed as a great thing in life) When you over exercise its becoming an issue. The disordered thinking is driven by the fear of weight loss and being happy with the weight i'm at. I acknowledge that its preoccupying my thought and time. I am aware I push my workouts to the point of exhaustion. It's affects my blood sugar, I have brain fog, my hair loss continued. Sports injuries. I feel I have to have control of this...If I let go of maintaining the way I do...I have weight gain. When life get out of control I replaced going to food for comfort to going two plus hours to the gym.

People and their comments pre and post wls

I am on my weight loss journey with the support of a dear friend who is on a weight gain journey. Honestly, she hears more rude comments on a daily basis than I do. People are awful. I would never make a comment to someone regarding their weight (unless it was a close family member and I knew they needed intervention) because you just don't know the situation. I was molested as a young child and dealt with a lot of death throughout my life. I ate to feel better. My friend had cancer and lost a lot of weight. While she has always been small, she just can't seem to keep up with her own metabolism. Different situations, different issues. Yet people want to judge. I'm sorry you are dealing with this. Just know that people make comments when they can't seem to control what is going on in their own lives. They feel like they need to bring you into their misery.
  10. Boy what a battle. Started out with the turkey being stuffed in the morning and me being stuffed at nite. BUT I won...I'm still here...poor turkey. I refuse to peek at the scale. Afriad it may put me in a tailspin. Plus it takes a few days for food to sometime register on that darn scale anyway. SO its intense time on treadmill for the weekend. If I can come out of this with no weight gain on Monday it will a miracle. (Becky is snickering lol)

    Antidepressents?

Oh, and re: weight gain. I gained 100 pounds over the few years I was on zoloft. Switched back to prozac and started losing it steadily. I am sure they are all different, and even different peopl have different reactions, but for me prozac does not cause weight gain. Zoloft sure as hell does though. I switched to zoloft from prozac about a month before meeting my now hubby. I figured I just got fatter from being happy or something. Then I got pregnant and nursed, so that left me on zoloft for 2 years or so and my ob prescribed them. When I went back to my shrink we went over everything and hat was when the timeline all clicked and it made sense. I never really remembered or put 2 & 2 together that I started gaining with the zoft until I went back to my shrink, who was the one who actually switched me. Durn it.

    I failed :(

I had a BMI of 52 and did not have to do a preop diet. I was clear liquids the day before but that was it. Definetly call your doctor and let him know. Also have you lost any weight preop dispite not adhering to the diet? My doctor warn me not to gain anymore weight before surgery because if I had a significant weight gain, then they would not do the surgery. Good Luck, I hope it works out. I do warn you that the lapband takes alot of work and you will not lose weight if you continue to eat bad things and not exercise. Its definetly a lifestyle change.
  13. If your out of control you have to regain that control. 1. track everything you eat 2. prioritize water 3. stop eating sugar - includes all the foods loaded with sugar 4. get out all those papers from your surgery and read the avoid these list again. 5. highly refined foods loaded with simple carbs are your path back to weight gain. how much of your grocery basket came from the 3 walls ? 1. produce 2. meats 3. dairy how much is from the center of the store ?
  14. There is a difference between weight related health issues that should be addressed by healthcare professionals and outright size discrimination. I think most of what the people described here was clearly size discrimination. Sorry, but you go to a doctor to TREAT your pain or illness. If they are unwilling to do so because of your size, then that is discrimination and they are not doing their jobs. These doctors make fat people unwilling to seek medical attention. This is something that needs to be addressed and I am sure this is a compounding factor in why obese people have health problems. They go to the doctor for treatment and are turned away! Duh, if you go to a doctor for help and don't get it, by the time you do get help, it has gotten to be a serious illness or chronic pain (and chronic pain contributes to depression and weight gain, derp doctors, derp!) I've been lucky enough to find a PCP that actually helps me when I need help and doesn't lecture. http://www.prevention.com/health/healthy-living/weight-and-obesity-discrimination-doctors This one made me laugh even though I have a hard time believing it http://danceswithfat.wordpress.com/2009/12/15/so-my-doctor-tried-to-kill-me/

Do you still identify as a wls patient?

@@Djmohr @@VSGAnn2014 Thanks for your point of view. I am only two years out. I can see medical issues may be specific to WLS. I have changed from my bariatric team to my family physician and dietician for care. All is normal without them. If I have a complication I would contact my team again. My weight is no longer the topic of conversation with others. The thrill of WLS is gone and its a great place to be. The only thing that reminds me that I'm a wls patient is weight gain. i don't see a difference between me and people that have been at a healthy weight most of their life. I take care of my health and my weight the same as they do.
  16. So I got surgery in December of 2011. My heaviest was 290-ish and my lowest post-op was 220. I admit that I didn't follow the rules and I drink pop now and looking back I would have lost so much more had I done everything right. It was just so nice to not worry about food for once in my life and eat what I wanted and not gain weight. I was only 17 so I was so young and stupid! Anyway I just had a baby, obviously gained weight from that. I was up to 270 when I finally gave birth and with some effort and help with medicine, I am now 244. I want to get down to my goal weight so I can finally get rid of the sagging skin and just feel more confident but I notice that I am eating more than I could. Obviously a little stretch is normal post op but I feel like depending on the food, I can eat so much more. I want to just lose the rest of the weight and ideally get down to 150-170. I have heard of the "re-sleeve diet" and was curious if anyone had success with that. I don't think I would qualify for a re-sleeve surgery. But if there anything I could do to utilize my sleeve again being 5+ years post op.

    Lap Band-Pseudo Tumor??

This will sound crazy but I thought I would share. I was diagnosed with Pseudo Tumor in 2002. It was really bad and at that point I had lost 75% of my peripheral vision. (My vision was restored once I had spinal taps to reduce the pressure) Over the next 2 years I suffered with debilitating headaches. Many medications were tried and the majority of the time I was in a major fog from the medications. The doctor wanted to do a shunt but I refused. I had spinal taps to relieve the pressure. (55 in a 2 year span) I lost enough weight to put me at a normal BMI and still suffered symptoms. I also suffered from migranes on top of the pressure headaches. In 2005 I had a Hysterectomy to help with the migraines. My Neuro said it wouldn't help with the migraines but my Gyn disagreed. Now I gained major weight after the surgery. Well...... since I had the hysterectomy I haven't had another episode with the Pseudo Tumor even with the weight gain. Not sure if it was a fluke or a miracle. Today I no longer take any meds for the Pseudo Tumor and I am working on the weight gain with a Realize Band.

    Boston dude

Congrats on making the decision! I too made the decision back in October, the time will pass very quickly. You touched on some of the emotional aspects of weight gain and weight loss, I have read many great trheads on this subject here. They really opened my eyes to the person I have become and to the road that I am about to travel. Good luck on your journey and dont be a stranger. :frown:

    Rapid Weight Gain

I had lap-band surgery in Aug of 2009 and lost over 120 lbs now for some reason, eating the same foods I did to lose weight, keeping a daily log, still religiously dieting and eating small amounts, I started to gain my weight back in Oct 2011 and since then I have put 50 lbs back on..I don't think I need another fill, I have a problem if I am filled to much all I do is vomit EVERYTHING back up, even Water. I got to the point when I was tight that I started losing my hair from lack of nutrition. My Doctor thought from the pain I was having in the pit of my stomach that I had a Gall bladder problem, turns out it stopped working, it was removed, they thought that would solve the weight gain problem, NOPE!! then they sent me for blood work, my thyroid was to slow (been on thyroid meds for YEARS) so they upped my dosage, still gaining..I am so depressed from this, I worked so hard to get the weight off, I was almost at goal and now I am back to my big clothes and at such a loss on what the problem is..I am asking my Lap-band Doc to look over my blood work again and see if there is something they missed..I had my Band reattached about a year ago because it slipped, Doc said he looked at it when I had the Gall bladder surgery and it seemed to be fine..HELP!!!!! PLEASE...I would be so willing to take full responsibility for the weight gain, if I had been pigging out and eating all the wrong things, but even my friends and family can't figure out how I even survive on what I eat..I know its not me. Thank you for any help anyone can give .
  21. I am a few days away and so excited and nervous all at the same time. Thank you all for sharing and keeping us updated. It helps so much for us who are waiting and have questions. My surgery is a revision from sleeve to bypass due to Hiatal Hernia which my surgeon will repair, GERD and never getting to goal with some weight gain. 2017 HW 284 I’m 5’3 LW after sleeve 194 after I juiced for three days to break the 200’s. Then two years ago I gained up to 224 and I turned vegetarian. Got down to 187. Then COVID hit. I have gained and lost the same 30 lbs for the last few years. Now my current weight is 225. My revision is set for Thursday, 2/17. I am hopeful all my efforts will get me to goal this time. I’m scared to end up the same. Wish me luck.
  22. Well I am experiencing the week 2/3 stall! No weight gained or lost. I know it's part of the process but still disheartening. Anyone else experiencing this?
  23. Had RNY August of 2007. Maintained well until 2013. Slow and steadily gaining all of my weight back. I am so frustrated! Day of surgery weight 260, lowest weight 144, back to 210. Help

    Weight Gain For Tom

My record is 7 pounds! I gain it the week before and then lose it the day before or the first day. My sister is the same but she doesn't lose hers until the end of her period. I'm hoping that when I'm smaller my pre period weight gain will be less too!
  25. I am a 37 year old male that has always struggles with my weight. Multiple diets that did nothing more than induce degrees of yo-yo weight gain/loss. I have been a type 1 diabetic since age 7, and now deal with type 2 as well. I have finally made the decision to consider VSG. I am in the baby stages. I have gone to the first seminar and have scheduled my first appointment. I am a bit nervous of the road ahead, but with a brand new baby at home, and my co-morbidities, I fear not seeing her graduate high school even more. I am seeing Dr. Jeffrey Johnsrud at St. Josephs in OC. The whole process is intimidating to me down to and including complications. I am an ICU Nurse and see a lot of normal procedure go wrong, but I keep telling myself I only see a small fraction of bad when overwhelmingly results are great.
