I Have my date, but I'm confused, needing advice
bigsexy replied to tracy226's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
just like any surgery - you can eat through it. My neighbor had Gastric Bypass 2 years ago. He dropped weight like mad - well over 200 lbs. he started out at 450. Well guess what - he is back to his original weight again. He didn't learn a damn thing. now he is back to where he was with anatomy that has been altered, eaten through his surgery and is on a downward spiral towards eating himself to death. The reason I am choosing banding over GB is that it seems that you have more options. Fill level, reversability (although one should consider it a permanent tool), safer, less side effects etc. To me GB wasn't worth the 1:200 mortality rate, nor was it worth the fact that it can't really be corrected. But in either case - you have to be mentally prepared for it. second thoughts and doubts are natural. Surround yourself with a support base to help you though the tough times and you will be fine. To anyone considering doing surgery - if don't think you can commit yourself to permanently changing your life then you arn't ready for surgery. Be ready and you will succeed. -
Horrible heartburn help!
emilygrace replied to 6kiddos's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine has been horrible lately - it was well controlled on nexium twice per day, and stupid me thought I could drop one dose since i hadn't had any reflux since postop. Cue awful reflex! Restarted but didn't resolve.. added zantac as well as nexium.. didn't resolve. Have had constant annoying throat clearing/dry cough since then which is driving me CRAZYYYYYYYYYYY!!! I am now going to go see a GI doc, may need some kind of upper GI test. I did have a hiatal hernia (that I wasn't aware of) fixed at surgery. I am 4 months postop, started getting worse at about 3 months. Also definitely haven't lost any weight this month despite counting calories, carbs and protein grams which is driving me batty. I am not more "hungry", but with acid rolling up my throat I am eating to try and keep it suppressed. -

You are not alone in this... I too was unable to get all liquids and Proteins in. I did the best I could and am still doing the same. I am6 weeks out today and it wasn't until last week that I was able to get all required quantities in. Please don't strew and do the best you can. Try variety and temps. Set a plan for yourself and try to stick with it. It will get better. -
Tomorrow I can start on soft foods and finally stop pureeing everything! What are your favorite foods at this stage?

Hi! I'm new on here and saw your post. I'm in Orlando and am just starting the process. I had gone to Dr. Jawad's info seminar about 3 years ago. But at that time my insurance didn't cover bariatric surgery. So I stopped the process. I currently have different insurance and am hoping that things have changed. I've been looking at lots of different options. One Dr's office contacted me and told me that my insurance will pay for surgery after of course passing the requirements...but have since been unable to follow up with anyone at that office. Did you use insurance? Did you enjoy your experience with Dr. Jawad? Any pointers for a newbie that doesn't know which direction to go anymore?? I'm desperate to have this surgery done but am afraid I'm going to be turned down by insurance again.

I'm 7 weeks post op today and started solids last week and i have not gotten sick or nauseous at all. I think my surgeon made me a stomach of steel! Keep monitoring your Protein so you get enough and you know where you're at for your daily intake.

why did I eat that pecan roll?
bandicootc replied to SleeveShelly's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try putting on your old clothes or look at old photos of yourself. You can find your motivation again! You can do this!! Get that crap out of your house. It's too tempting. Or say ok I can eat that after I have my protein and most likely you won't want it. -
If you are having a gallbladder attack, or if you have stones, you'd be better off knowing it now...before surgery. You wouldn't want to have a full blown attack a day or 2 after surgery. Some people have the gall bladder removed during the sleeve surgery. If you have stones, that could be an option for you, but only if you find out now.

Controling Your SWEET TOOTH
Shannalee replied to coolnessa22's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost into my 6 week pre-op diet which is mostly protein drinks. What I have heard that helps with the sweet tooth is SF pop-cycles or SF jello. It's the one thing that you'll get to eat after the surgery so it might help before. What helps me is I use a little more Mio in my water. It makes it sweet and helps me with my craving. I have quit everything like you but the soda is the one thing that is difficult for me. Considering where I was 4 months ago I have quit a lot of things that are bad for me. Can't wait to hear how your pre-op appointment goes -
I tried some protien powder..
JimmyGotSLEEVED replied to VSG4aHealthierMe's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Yeah, your body has to get adjusted to your new eating habits... When you start taking Protein it usually takes your body a week or two to actually adjust. Once it does you will start feeling more energetic and less fatigue. Plus if you are waking up in the more starving, it is a great thing because you are suppose to fast through out the night. Once you eat Breakfast you should feel extremely refueled. -

Khy replied to VSG4aHealthierMe's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Yes it hits me like that too. I can put down 8 oz of tomato juice in 1/2 hour no problem. Putting down 8 oz of a Protein shake... takes me at least an hour. Makes me feel VERY full and tired. Khy -
Today is the day i start what they said is the PRE pre op diet.
RickM replied to h.brooks661989's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is highly dependent upon what the surgeon's program calls for - some are a simple low carb calorie restricted diet, others do a combination of protein drinks and low carb meals, and yet others are nothing but liquids only (some are only clear liquids,) while other require nothing at all until the day before surgery. What does your plan say? -
Do you still drink a lot of protein?, I can not eat chicken or turkey, it makes me sick

It all started at the movie theatre on New Year's Eve. I ate my Protein bar, then some of my husband's popcorn, more popcorn, a few good and plenty, Dots. Then we went to a bar where I had a cocktail, half a cheeseburger and a few fries. When I got home I dug into my daughter's chocolate stash. First chocolate I've eaten in 8 months. It all a felt so familiar, this was old time diet sabotage! In the past I would have completely given up at this point, diet over. I was thinking of all the fattening things I could eat on New Year's because it would still be a holiday. Good news is I woke up and got right back on the horse so to speak and stuck to my eating plan all day without any crazy ideas popping into my head. I'm kinda glad the frick'n holidays are over.

Magnesium Citrate?
Sleevedintx replied to ThinnerTiff's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It's because of the high protein. Our fiber is fairly low. -
I use GNC unflavored whey protein and mix with Diet Lipton tea (mango/pineapple) and ice. I drink this at night alot, it helps curb my sweet tooth.

@keepmoving I was the same way.I became a member of this site October 2010 but didn't start posting until I was sure I was getting banded which was this year.I first went to success stories then complications and back again.I agree the energy here is Awesome.I really like the tough love posts when we start making excuses.people can get tough but u can feel the love in the writing and u know they want u to succeed. @Donna as of this post ur a little over a week on the liquid diet.I hope u got in the rhythm of it by now.it will be over soon.I hated it so much I have basically x's protein shakes out my diet ! Every blue moon I will have one if I just can't get breakfast.I may go back to them as part of a regular diet but right now I can't do it .Goodluck to u both !!

I was allowed Slim Fast Lo Carb and have recently found a canned drink called "Zoic" which has 80 less calories, less fat, less carbs, and more Protein than Slim Fast. I was also permitted anything sugar free, including fudgsicles--but each surgeon is different. Try this website to order what you decide to use (make sure to look for "free shipping"): Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, books, DVDs & more Best of luck to you!

I'm currently on the puree'd foods. I am, as I think many of us are, very tired of whey protein. I can start on soft foods next Thursday. But things are going well. I am a bit more tired than I thought I would have been, but I find a nap during the day seems to perk me up. Prior to surgery, I was taking 17 different medications (metabolic syndrome) plus a shot twice a month; I am now taking 4 medications, plus the two shots. No high blood pressure, no heart angina, no osteoarthritis. So overall right now, feeling pretty great on top of it. I do have a question; while I am loosing steadily, once in a while I have a day where it goes up just a bit (about half-one pound). Am I doing something, or is this just one of the attempts of my body to find equilibrium with the weight loss? Thanks!

You can "doctor" up the Protein shakes with flavored sugar-free syrups (I.E. Torani or DaVinci), coffee crystals (like Folger's instant) and extracts. The first 2-3 days are the worst, then it becomes MUCH easier. I also like them with 1/2 fat-free milk, 1/2 Water and 5-6 ice cubes. Some like to put in a blender. I like to put in a "Blender Bottle" (WalMart has the best price I found on these) and shake really well. Who is your surgeon? -

Thanks a lot again. I am sampling & testing various things out this week. You all have given such great options! I wanted to be ready come 11/12/12. -
I will try your idea with the sf puddings, yummy. Thanks for the idea, it helps me get Protein in since the only thing I'm eating now just two weeks after surgery is fish and canned chicken, well 2 and half weeks. My doc sent me home with a diet of first 24 hrs all liquid then mushies till this past Wed then regular food. I sometimes do a Protein shake for Breakfast if I don't do an egg. I can't wait to try your ideas.
