February 2023 surgery dates!
RoxyChick replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Surgery Feb 10 (sleeve). First 48 hours just plain sucked! Lots of gas pain and I was walking immediately when I got back to the recovery room after surgery. I remember the gas pain from both my C-sections so I wanted that pain gone. 8 days post op and last night was the best sleep so far. I am so over Jell-O and yogurt and protein shakes! Yesterday it felt like something was stuck in my throat and all I have been on is liquids but when I talk to the doctor, they said it was just my esophagus stretching out. I have a follow my doctor on Tuesday. I am so hungry like every day. I just feel like I’m starving and hungry. I get all my water in and protein but I am literally starving all making dinner for the rest of my family. I literally wanted to cry last night because of hunger. I can’t wait for the puréed stage. -
I'm still pretty fresh out of surgery but I am going through this now. I was able to start "normal" foods this past Tuesday and I really have zero interest in trying new things, exploring my new options, etc. It doesn't help that my tastebuds have changed. I'm bored with the whole idea of eating, it seems. I wish I didn't have to.

November Surgery Buddies!!!
gmast99 replied to Tristenhilpert97's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I haven’t checked in for a while. Doing great here. So far no complications. I am down to 185 and feeling great. I pretty much made it without any of the difficulties. I never really got foamies and don’t think I got sick more than 5 times and most were in the first 6 months. Now I can pretty much eat whatever I want I just get full really quickly. My body has relearned its relationship with food and unlike the old days the minute I start to feel full I totally lose my appetite and just want food to go away. I probably need to work on my protein intake since I still love carbs but no one is perfect. I am glad everyone is doing well. It is not a quick fix like I thought it would be but overall I feel like it was a healthy way to lose weight. I am medication free with normal labs and blood pressure now and no more CPAP. -
Recovery TImes / Back to work
NP_WIP replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I work from home, had surgery 11/22/2022 on Tuesday and was working on Monday 11/28/2022. My worst day were Friday and Saturday prior to starting to work, by Monday I wasn't taking any pain killers, and was doing decently with my liquids which I prioritize the first week and then moved to prioritizing protein. I personally didn't feel tired but was ready to take breaks if needed and to do 6hrs instead of the usual 8-10. I lined up the medicine cups to have 1oz of water every 15 minutes and got up every hour to walk to the bathroom even if I didn't need to go just to get moving. -
Recovery TImes / Back to work
vsg2410 replied to Victoria_Faith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery at the end of November and I took two weeks off and I definitely needed the two weeks, although I don’t have the option to work from home. My first week back to work I was exhausted by the time I got home but I still felt ready to be back at work. -
I cannot lose any weight after 1 week post op!
vsg2410 replied to aaleee97's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
There are a lot of factors that go into weight - hydration, constipation, fat loss vs water loss. It can be extremely frustrating to not see a change on the scale but trust the process! The weight loss is not linear. As for your diet plan - is there someone you can reach out to at the office to answer those questions for you? My surgeon just has protein and hydration goals - no calorie limit. For reference it ended up being about 600-700 calories per day in the soft food stage. -
I can relate to this. I had a period where I just did not want to eat. I had lots of yogurt replacement meals. Real food still didn't taste good to me and there were lots of foods I just couldn't stomach. Going on holiday kickstarted my appetite. Lots of different foods to try seemed to switch my taste buds on again. I love Asian foods and as I live in the back of beyond, if I want them, I have to cook them. I get so much inspiration from the pages - Food before and after. @Starwarsandcupcakes gave me miso [ never heard of it before] @Tomo does food I always want to eat, I drool looking at the photos. Hang in there, do your best to eat 'proper' foods at mealtimes. Skinny people skip meals all the time. Just get your teams goals in, as in protein etc.

Great job. Thanks for sharing. Of the whole bariatric experience, saggy skin scares me. I know plastics is an option, but...

So, so ready....

Had my surgery. Not feeling that great. Stomach is in some discomfort. Had 8 big polyps removed. 1 was super big, inflamed, and granular. So a biopsy was done on it. On the 10th, I'm having 8-10 removed again. Not sure if that's going to be all of them. Might have to do a 3rd surgery. There was some bleeding today, so the doctor could only do the 8 today. I slept a good portion of the day away, and I'm only having a protein shake for meals. Hoping I can move on to soup and maybe soft foods tomorrow and normal food by Sunday. Definitely not feeling great, tho. Blah. -
I found to help hungry was using vital proteins collagen. I mixed it with sugar free ocean spray juice. I also use the fiber powder from bariatric advantage. I still using it post op but add miralax to it.

Feel Like Progressing Backwards 1 Month Post Op
BeaJ0913 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had the Vertical Gastric Sleeve on January 23rd, and beside a bit of nausea from the anesthesia the first few days I was doing relatively well for the first 2 weeks. That all changed drastically on week 3 and now week 4. I can come nowhere near the amount of protein or liquids or calories my Dr. wants me to consume daily. The reason being that Thursday of week 3 I began having excruciating pain in my lower abdomen and back and it starts within minutes of taking a sip of anything... It feels like someone is taking my mid-section and wringing it out like a wet cloth... It truly will take my breath away when it is happening... I also had to go back from creamy liquids to just clear liquids and that is very disheartening. On the plus side, I don't have any vomiting (YET), but this other pain is truly making my life miserable... I also, have severe pain in my left shoulder and I have seen in other posts that can be from gas that is trapped there... I have had 2 C-sections and numerous other surgeries, including a gallbladder removal in the past and THIS has to be by far the absolute worst pain that I have ever experienced in my life... Also, my Dr. did order labs on Monday of this week (week 4) and a swallow test and that did show that there was a bit of an issue with the angle of my esophagus to my stomach, but he wasn't overly concerned and put me on protonix... Nothing has changed... Is there anyone out there that has had these same symptoms that can possibly give me any hope that this won't last forever? I am literally in tears every night because I am regretting this decision... Even though I have been successful with weight loss so far... What is weight loss if I feel like death??? Any information or advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you.- 11 replies

I am at a point where nothing interests me when it comes time to eat so I just don't... I still will make my protein coffee to try and get something in. But has anyone else went through a funk like this?

I have Fibro and am also bone on bone in both knees, one worse than the other. Conventional exercise is not an option for me atm. I'm awaiting surgery for the sleeve and then a knee replacement. For now, since October, I joined my local gym which has a pool. I attended multiple group classes with various instructors. Most times don't mesh well with my schedule so I've taken the things that work for me and make my own routine. My husband has noticed, as have my clothes (lol) a definite loss of inches. And on the machine at the gym I've gained muscle mass and lost fat, even though the number on the scale has seemingly stayed the same. My husband also says I move better although I do still favor that one knee. If you've got a gym close by that has a pool, it would be worth the effort. I go 3 to 4 times a week, for at least an hour. I jog in place for 30 to 40 minutes, then finish with my strength exercises. Then, I treat myself to the hot tub. I can say that outside of pilates on a reformer, this is something I really look forward to since I've never been a huge exercise advocate. I love stretching and yoga, but I do that on my bed. Hope this helps. I know moving and staying active is key to keeping that Fibro pain at bay and in check. Sent from my SM-G998U using BariatricPal mobile app

LapBand Removal Revision to Sleeve
TQUAD64 replied to TQUAD64's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
The first week post op was really hard. I am now two week post op and doing so much better. I’m now able to get my fluids and protein in. I do feel tired because of the reduced calories but every day I focus on increasing my protein which helps. good luck with your surgery. -
Teachers out there... (or anyone with stressful jobs)
Befolver replied to XtinaDoesIt's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I chose a method for myself with the fact that I drink more water than a protein shake and about the toilet is all your exposure. -
Not sure if you’re still losing or how much you have to go or are maintaining but I wonder if you are eating enough? Your job is physical & you’re exercising so your night hunger may be real & understandable & could explain your fatigue too. May be have a chat with your dietician. There might be something missing in your food choices or an increase in calories, or adding more carbs, etc. might make a difference. Old habits, like night eating, can sneak their way back in as time passes. Working out ways to manage the habit or to distract yourself certainly helps, as does establishing new habits. I wasn’t a late night time eater but I worried I’d become one so I followed a no eating after 8pm habit for years & still do. Like @catwoman7, afternoon eating was always my weakness. I’ve slowly moved my eating times to later in the day as I find it easy not to eat earlier in the day. I have breakfast at 9am, snack at 1pm, snack at 2:30 lunch at 4pm, dinner at 6pm & final snack at 7:30. (I have a routine of what & when I snack to get in my calories & protein.)

After surgery concerns.. Help!
Bariiime replied to Bariiime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you so much for all the feedback and suggestions. I appreciate it. Today have been the best so fat. I've managed to keep down the 8 oz of Water and 6 oz of Protein throughout the day. I'm hoping to get more relief soon. I was thinking maybe it's taking me longer to heal. My upper GI look normal my surgeon said. So she will still schedule me for the endoscopy next week. So I hope it will be fine as well. xoxo -
Hi - everyone everything is going well. I lost 105 lbs and on March 16th I’ll be my one year gastric bypass anniversary. Initially I had a somewhat difficult time eating- went on omeprazole for gastritis issues-it seemed to work. November I went to ER to realize after extensive testing I had a gallbladder attack. In December I had my gallbladder removed. I am doing well now but I am scared because I am hungry at night. Nighttime has always been my downfall. I try to eat well during the day. I work PT 10-2PM M-F and I start the day off with a protein shake - drink water-iced coffee no sugar almond milk-water-snack on either nuts, cheese, yogurt or protein bar. I try to have lunch right when I get home. I have dinner around 6-6:30. I consume about 1200 calories and always exceed my protein levels 70-80. On top of that I get fatigued. I do walk or do elliptical and recently kettlebells. I work ironically in a school cafeteria and it’s a very busy job. I can’t be very mindful as it is very fast paced. Has anyone got the night time hunger?

I had VSG July 2020 (at age 68). so that puts me at about 2 1/2 years out. I started at 200#. My goal was about 139, but I have been stabilized at 144 for over a year. In fairness to the program/procedure, I haven’t exercised as much as I should have. I can eat whatever I want, no intolerances, but I try to eat protein/ veggies /fruit/ whole grains. I don’t care for carbonated beverages , so no worries there. I limit myself to eating 4 times/day. No grazing. Maybe about 4-5 ounces of wine at dinner a couple times a week. Blood pressure improved. A little loose skin, but I probably won’t have surgery. Absolutely no regrets or complications!

February 2023 surgery dates!
Semalnar replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can you crush your pills? Maybe crush them and take them with some protein pudding to help with your protein intake. Another way I have made my goals is I have been doing the protein waters, kinda killing 2 birds with 1 stone. I also made myself jello with collagen protein in it so my 4oz jello has 10 g of protein. I know it can be hard especially with all the rules of eating and drinking after surgery, one of the things they told me to do was set a reminder for when to eat or drink and the man focus is to stay hydrated at this stage of the game. If you can get at least 1 protein shake in a day I would consider it a win. -
February 2023 surgery dates!
Tiana2570 replied to Erin18's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 3 days post op driving myself crazy trying to understand and make sure I meet these goals! My biggest issue is trying to get these pills down. I have lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. Along with other chronic illnesses. By the time I get down all these pills I can’t stomach any more water or protein. I take 9 pills in the morning (a few I have to open) and 6 pills at night. Any advice I’d truly appreciate it. -
Complications 11 yrs after surgery

If sleeve is an option for you I have had no problem absorbing anxiety medication and adhd medication post gastric sleeve but as summerseeker said if you have any doubts don’t hesitate to hit pause - it’s a life time commitment and worth the few extra months to throughly investigate your concerns. -
Whether it's snacking or grazing we must be prepared. First try to avoid what I was told is slider foods. These are high carb foods such as popcorn, chips, crackers, cakes, etc. You can eat a ton of them but never feel full and they do not have any nutritional value. Instead prepare and weigh out snacks like nuts, protein bars, veggies. I was instructed to eat the food slowly. When I eat nuts I take one at a time nibble it and extend the time I have to enjoy the snack. I was instructed not to take a handful and gulp them down. Same with other foods. Eat slowly, nibble at it and make the eating process last. So far it's a strategy that has worked for me.

It's the dreaded stall we all experience, it will pass. Whatever you do never think that you're not eating enough. You're body has changed and when you're full you're full don't eat around your restriction. After six years I still have a good restriction and I am very thankful for it. I've had friends and family members who have eaten around their restriction and have lost it. If it's protein you want try protein shakes but do not think solid foods are your answer at this stage. You'll only begin setting yourself up for failure.

Not Eating enough?
The Greater Fool replied to Woodlandsguy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Get off the scale. You don't need it to succeed. Look at how you are doing well on your plan but the scale has you thinking you need to change something. You can get the scale moving by throwing it away. BTW, I was 6'4" when I had surgery. Now that I ponder it 6'4" would have been very close to my waist size. There's a joke in there somewhere. My protein was about 60g a day. Maybe if I did more protein I'd still be 6'4" but over these 20 years I've also lost a couple inches in height. Good luck, Tek
