    2 days post op concerns...

You've only gone 1 time a week? Isn't it painful when you go? I haven't gone in three days, so I just took some milk of magnesium. I can only eat a half of the container of yogurt (3 oz). I see there are quite a few people who can eat the 6 full oz with no problem.

    April 2011 Bandits

Hi millypili congratulations on being banded. I was banded on the 22nd. I didn't experience the shoulder pain like you are but I did have discomfort with the gas in my chest making it hard to take deep breaths. The best thing that I would recommend would be a heating pad and keep walking the gas will eventually go away. The liquid diet stinks but is needed to heal. I survived this week with my Protein shakes (Bariatric advantage) crystal light, Water, hot decaf tea and jello. I'm on the pureed stage now and that's been the hardest for me. I mainly have creamy Soups along with the Protein Shakes, yogurt and water. Things will start to improve as the days go by. Good luck to you on your journey!

    Soft Food Early

I can absolutely relate! I had my first ricotta bake last night just because I had to have something with substance, not just liquid or slimy yogurt. It still amazes me that it can take me 45 minutes to an hour to finish something the size of a half baked muffin. Just the act of chewing something was great. I’m not advocating not following your Doc’s plan, but I do agree that 24 hours may not make a huge difference as long as it is something from the next phase.

Get unflavored protein powder and add to soup, yogurt or even water. I am pre-surgery and already hate protein shakes (pre-made).

    nausea

I'm 10 days post op. band removal and sleeve. rough couple of days. 2 days in hospital. no vomiting but lots of heartburn/nausea. hard to tell if hunger pains or nausea. salty foods go down better loving tomato soup. on pureed diet. Breakfast is worst, as I luv my coffee. taking Prilosec 20 30 minutes before breakfast. didn't work today,lightheaded/nausea. greek yogurt goes down ok and dry chicken soup mix. I am very sick of the Protein drinks but know that is a guaranteed protein.

    Help !

It just was uncomfortable and hurt when I would try and eat. I got different advice/opinions about the situation as well. Suggesting that maybe my body now couldn't handle dairy, maybe I was eating foods with too much acidity, maybe I was eating too fast, etc. It would feel like heartburn or like a lot of pressure in my head when I would try to eat something new or different. I'm not sure how else to explain it. So I've become rather fond of yogurts, jellos, puddings, soups, applesauce, and of course sugar free popsicles. Kay_G_B

    Anyone having surgery on 11/6?

Me too! My son is 7 and first I told him surgery because they did find a tumor on my liver last month then decided he will tell people I don't want so I just said they are going to look at my insides. @ nprcowboy Supplies-I got two months of various Vitamins required through my kaiser program. All but one is chewable or liquid but got them at walmart, cvs, online at (celebrate vitamins) to get it all. Don't want to worry bout crushing pills! I also ordered 2 kinds of Protein powder (flavored), 1 unflavored to add to Soup, yogurt, applesauce. Got a Ninja blender, food thermometer, insulated cups for sipping, blender ball shakers for on the go. Tummy binder, slip on walking shoes, gas x strips. From grocery, Jello, sugar free (sf) pudding, Popsicles, lowfat cream Soups, strainer, light and fit Greek yogurt, in chunky unsweetened applesauce, Cream of wheat. Some premade Protein Shakes for the on the go but just a case because I may not like em later! Try bariatric pantry. Got done samples and after surgery will order more things for the rest of the month.
  12. I must say I have not had any artificial protein in weeks. I get all my protein from natural healthy food. I have totally switched to natural organic (when I can) wholesome foods. Nothing artificial or packages or processed. The way I feel is amazing. I have not had one dumping episode and really don't see myself having one. I have been able to stay strong and frankly just want any of that junk. If you know exactly what your eating, and I mean you know what it is an how it was prepared. No processed packaged JUNK I would think you would be fine. I do even eats fruits in raw form and smoothies and do not have any issues. I LOVE spinach, frozen strawberries, frozen blueberries, shredded coconut (that I keep in the freezer) and a smidge of plain yogurt. A lot of the time I leave the yogurt out. Don't be afraid to play around just eat what your body is telling you it wants. (unless its screaming Mcdonald's LOL)

    5 days out!

I do two things: 1, I eat Greek Yogurt...I usually buy it plain and mix a flavor in....Greek yogurt has about 13-15 grams of Protein per serving. 2, I fill a 24 ounce mixer cup with Water, a flavor packet like crystal light, one packet of sugar sub, and then two scoops of plain Protein powder. I keep this with me all the time; my schedule is to eat some sort of thick or dairy based "drink" during one hour and a water based in the next, so...every other hour I drink 4 oz of my water mix. By the end of the day, that gives me 43 protein on top of whatever else I have had...Hope this helps. I get my protein from the GNC website...

    Pill crushing

I never crushed, though I know of others who have and then mixed the bits into sugar-free applesauce, Greek yogurt, or mashed potatoes. I cut my larger Vitamins (multi, calcium). Post-op meds were liquid (Vicodin) and very small tablets (Pepcid). For what it's worth, a too-large pill that gets "stuck" is uncomfortable, but with time and drinking fluids it WILL go down.
  15. Pandemonium

    Upset

So, to me, that does seem like it's a bit more than one would expect from an immediate post-op diet. That said, I only have my own experiences from which to speak and if this is the diet that your doctor prescribed, then they may have a reason. For comparison, here is the diet I am on currently (I hit 10 weeks post-op tomorrow), which is not really standard for most programs that I've seen: 2 times a week: Breakfast - 9am - 2 scoops of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (185 calories) Lunch - 1pm - 1 scoop of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (115 calories) Snack - 4pm - 1 protein bar (18-20g of protein -Think, Pure Protein, or Built Bar) (160-230 calories) Dinner - 7pm - 1 protein bar (18-20g of protein -Think, Pure Protein, or Built Bar) (160-230 calories) 60+ ounces of water (usually Crystal Light) (40 calories if all Crystal Light) 1 time a week: Breakfast - 9am - 2 scoops of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (185 calories) Lunch - 1pm - 1 scoop of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (115 calories) Snack - 4pm - 1 bottle of Premiere Protein protein water (20g of protein in 16.9 ounces of fluids) (90 calories) Dinner - 7pm - 1 protein bar (18-20g of protein -Think, Pure Protein, or Built Bar) (160-230 calories) 4 times a week: (up from 3x/week as of this week) Breakfast - 9am - 2 scoops of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (185 calories) Lunch - 1pm - 1 scoops of Celebrate 4-in-1 in 8oz of unsweetened almond milk + 2 tsp Benefiber (115 calories) Snack - 4pm - 1 protein bar (18-20g of protein -Think, Pure Protein, or Built Bar) (160-230 calories) Dinner - 7pm - 3-4.oz of allowable soft foods (I've had ground chicken, ground turkey, pureed chicken salad made with hummus & greek yogurt, ricotta bake, baked/steamed whitefish, scrambled eggs) (210 - 250 calories) So I think there would be room to make adjustments to your diet plan, as long as you would still be hitting your protein goals, but that is definitely a conversation you would want to have with your doctor. Simply be upfront with them about your concerns about the slow weight loss and ask for guidance on how to make changes to your diet plan to facilitate better results. Some times you have to make those changes to the diet plan in order to keep your body on it's toes!

    6 Months Later

On the weight loss slowing, everyone here has already said that's totally normal. But since I'm a total nerd and tracked my weight loss, I can tell you exactly how mine slowed down. I've lost a total of 70 lbs over 23 months. Month 1: 3.5 lbs a week, reached -22 lbs Months 2-4: ~1.5-2 lbs a week, reached -41 lbs Months 5-12: 0.5-1 lbs a week, reached -63 lbs and passed my original goal weight at 11 months out Months 13-20: 0.2 lbs a week, currently at -70 lbs, 12 under my original goal Does this mean that you pretty much never dieted before you got surgery? Or are you comparing now to the first 6 months after surgery, where you didn't care about food much simply because you weren't hungry? After reading these boards for a few years, it seems that the people who have long term success do have to pay some attention to their diet to maintain their weight loss. But that takes a lot of different forms according to the specific issues and goals of different people. You won't necessarily have to pay as much attention to it in the long term as you do right now. Right now you're learning what works for you; later it will become habit. Especially if what you said above means that you never dieted much before - in this case you would be learning about what works for you for the first time. But for everyone, after bariatric surgery, you have to learn what your "new normal" is. Personally, my long term goal has been to maintain without having to calorie count. Before surgery, I was pre-diabetic and low carb was the only thing that ever helped me lose weight. After surgery, carbs are still an issue for me, though much, much less of an issue than before. Rather than limiting/counting carbs every day, I've found that having a 4-5 day period of low-carb every 3-4 weeks keeps my carb cravings in check. I still start my day with a protein powder latte and make sure that I have protein with every meal. Veggies help keep me full. If I feel hungry, I eat a snack, but I usually start with a piece of cheese or a few frozen meatballs (I love these things) before I have anything more junky. I eat sweets some days, but not all. I use things like sugar free ice cream or low sugar yogurt for a bit of a treat on other days.

    Restriction Question

This is normal. Some foods are difficult to eat and will fill you up really quickly e.g solid Protein such as meat/chicken. Other foods go down really easily so it takes lots to fill you up. They are called slider foods and you should try to avaoid them. They include crisps, chocolate, icecream, Desserts etc. Some sliders are OK in small quantities as they provide imprtant nutrients e.g yogurt. I am not surprised you got stuck on a hard boiled egg. I have always found them dry and really difficult to eat even preband. The thing is to always eat slowly, small bites and chew really well. If you do get stuck stop eating and don't try to drink as it makes it worse. I generally try to burp or cough the stuck item up as when it comes up you get relief. Some people guzzle a fizzy drink really quickly. Apparently this unblocks you and brings iit up really fast so only do it near a toilet or sink!Others swear by papaya enzymes but for me they do nothing. In time you will figure out what works for you. Also the optimum level of fill to achieve restriction is different for everyone. Some people have 10 cc bands with only 1 or 2cc and they are restricted. Others have overfilled bands. As for the scale............ I still jump on it EVERY morning!

    Newly banded 12/4/12

Jojo and Cassie, I had a lot of nausea post op, I pretty much lived on Gas-x and RX Nausea medication supplied by my doctor. In the days when I could only have liquids I was only able to tolerate 2 ozs or so every 2-3 hours. I felt like that was all I did and I did feel pretty week. I was banded on a Thursday and went back to work on a Monday. I thought because I worked in an office I would be fine but that first week back was really hard and I felt pretty week. My suggestion is make sure you are always sipping on some sort of SF drink in the beginning and do remember that these early days are more about healing than losing weight, that will come after your first fill. I used a lot of creamed soups and once I felt better and had less nausea I added a little unflavored protein powder to help me go a little longer between meals. I also ate a lot of thinned grits and mashed potato's and when I say thin I mean pretty watery. I was so hungry one day I decided to try a saltine cracker because they dissolve well in your mouth, wasn't a good experience for me. Just know the these early days are very hard, you have no real help from your band and you are so excited and eager to start your journey and so frustrated that you are hungry. Know that all of these feelings are normal and you are doing nothing wrong, and Cassie is correct this is the part that is referred to as "bandster hell". You also will eat and drink things during this stage that you later will consider sliders, protein drinks, yogurt, etc. I just encourage you to stay away from high calorie foods now and learn to not bring them around because unfortunately these are the foods that when nothing else goes down they always do. Good luck to both of you and I know you both will do very well.
  21. You definitely sound dehydrated and undernourished. Have you tried Syntrax nectar Protein? They are like koolaid so they may not fill you up as much as the milk-based shakes do. They come in variety of flavors. 2 scoops in 32 oz Water would give you 40g protein you could sip on all day. Add in a couple cups of decaf herbal tea (warm liquids went down better for me), another couple cups of water and you've got your fluids in. Try adding unflavored Protein powder to some Soups. They may not fill you up like dense Proteins do, so you can get more in. Plain Greek yogurt flavored with vanilla protein powder would give you a big protein boost, too. I had to sip all day long from the moment I Woke up till the minute I went to bed. I never didn't have a water bottle in my hand and I rarely ate/drank anything that didn't contain protein. And I did not go to bed until I got my 64 oz and 60+g. You have to make these a priority. They are WAY more important than excercise at this point.
  22. I am being banded at the tlbc and this is their pre-op diet recommendation, remember...the reason that you do this is not necessarily to lose weight, it is to shrink your liver, you want to make it as easy as possible for the surgeon to have access to your stomach. The TLBC says this diet works best and it's cheap. For me its 10 days *quantities are not specified, you can have as much as you need of the following items. You may also have foods that have negligible caloric or nutritional value such as the following: coffee, tea, diet drinks(crystal light), sugar free jell-o and salt & spices. This is the diet Cottage cheese -choose low fat or non fat varieties Yogurt -Opt for low fat or non fat yogurt. Flavored yogurts are acceptable, as long as they are artificially sweetened Milk -Drink 1% or Skim, flavored or sweetened milk is NOT a recommended option Water -make sure you drink a minimum of 1.5 liters a day. Hope this helps you. Financially, its cheaper. And it works, its time tested on TLBC patients.

    Liquids

I know during my full liquid phase 32 oz were to come from stuff like water, shakes, Propel, broth, Gatorade Zero, etc. and the other 32 oz from stuff like blended bean soups, cream soups, milk, yogurt, sugar free pudding, etc. Do you have any paperwork/a binder with that info for reference that the doc or dietician gave you?

    11/3/09 Up the Calories

I too am VERY frustrated with no weight loss in 2 months. I am working out at the gym with a trainer, 5 days a week for 1 1/2 hours of cardio and two days a week of 1 hour with trainer and 30 min of cardio. I dont feel like I am eating all that much at all. The only thing I cheat with is a couple of cookies here and there and a popsicle once in a while. Surely those couple of things cant be hurting with all the calories I am burning...I am eating a lot of tuna for lunches, lots of chicken at dinner, apples, and protein shakes or yogurt in the mornings. And I have not lost a pound since doing all this. I was banded at the end of March and have only lost 42 lbs. VERY FRUSTRATED and wondering if this is all I am going to lose, when my body still needs to lose at least another 40 lbs. I paid alot of money for this and wanted it to work. Any answers???
