  1. Yes thank you so much for that. I'm flying out Monday (tomorrow) and I'm going alone so I'm very nervous about complications. Reading your story made me feel better. I am having my surgery Tuesday the 18th and I will definitely post details also. I cannot tell you how helpful these stories are to people like me. They help so much in making my decision.

    Tough Topic

You're going to be in great hands with Dr. Aceves & I echo crosswind in saying you are NOT going to die on the table. He is a great surgeon with many, many VSG operations under his belt and his experience will pay off for you in the long run. I thought about writing a letter to my children (10 and 7) only because I was worried about my plane crashing. I didn't have one ounce of fear about undergoing surgery. Not a single, solitary bit and this from a woman who lost her dad on the surgical table 7 years ago. He was very sick with heart disease and the operation was extremely risky and we expected complications anyway, but it still leaves a scar. I admit, the first surgery I had after he died scared the crap out of me because I was worried I would never wake up, too, but the happy juice/pill you get really does make you not care. I've had 5 more surgeries since then and the VSG was by far the easiest and least worrisome for me. Congrats on your surgery!
  3. Not sure how to word this. How many sleevers have had no issues with any kinds of food, indigestion, heartburnd, GERD, etc. pre-op and remained the same post-op? I've never struggled with anything like that but wanted to know the possibility of these afterwards. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

    Stomach leaks

Hi Cathy, I am in Texas too, but haven;t yet had my surgery yet. It's scheduled for next week and I have a bad case of cold feet setting in. So sorry you are having this complication. Did they tell you how long it will be before they fix your leak and how they are going to do that, success rate etc?
  5. I had surgery in 2006 and lost 280 pounds over all over the course of six years… In the past three years I gained back 90 pounds… Last year I had an endoscopy and upper G.I. and they discovered I had a hiatal hernia and some staple adhesions… And recommended a revision… The surgeon I went to told me that he could leave the new smaller stomach and they now remove the excess old stomach… They no longer leave your stomach in there or he doesn't… And doing my research I understood a revision patient usually loses 2 to 3 pounds a month… My doctor said when he got in there… He found a fistula which was a complication from the first surgery which most likely cause my weight gain… A week after surgery… Today I got on the scale and I lost 13 pounds… Was totally shocked and not expecting that so I am wondering since I had that fistula this new revision is kickstarting my weight loss and I will see great success question? Anyone that had a revision care to share their weight-loss story with me after the revision Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. I don't think you can make a decision to band or not based on someone else's complications. I say that b/c complications can vary WIDELY. What I mean is what exactly was the complication? Was the patient following all the rules, eating the right stuff? Where there other underlying medical conditions? Was the surgeon good? Good Luck!!
  7. I just found out today I was denied for a revision because even though it's for GERD my insurance says the GERD is a complication from weight loss surgery and therefore they won't pay. I hate insurance!

    Tired Of It...

Hi essence...... I hope you make a good choice on which wls you decide on. It's a personal choice and it can be a hot debate on here. I personally choose the sleeve so that it is permanent and has less complications than the other procedures. My surgeon told me that it's the go to one now that's working better..... For me, I wanted something that was permanent and I got it. I have lost 100% of my EWL and if I had to chose again, I would chose the sleeve.......I'm 2 years post op.......I am skinny, but not too skinny.......I wish you well on your journey. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.......I know that most people on this site are very terrific people that want to help others.....they give honest opinions....
  9. Had to vent a few minutes ago. It was not in a negative way, but on the "Sleeve" forum I left the title, "Complications." I don't care what procedure you chose or had, don't tell your negative story then tell people don't get it. I'm sorry things didn't work out, however, everyone body handles things differently. With any surgery complications are sure to happen, not just WLS. Again, "Sorry" for any complications anyone have had, but don't encourage others not to do WLS. Its not fair to people like me who comes on a support site for support. Yes, I want to know the good and bad, but don't tell people "Not" to do it. I'm torn on this whole thing. I literally have people telling me on this forum, "Don't do it, go the other route." If dieting and exercise was enough for me, then I wouldn't need these tools. Obviously, there's a problem and I need help, just like you did when you decided. Thanks, but no thanks. I'll take my chances. I can't be dead twice...I feel dead already, I can only come alive once I get this tool. Its my second chance at life, and I'm fighting back for it. "I WANT TO LIVE." "I'M GONNA LIVE."

    Tired Of It...

What exactly are you trying to say? You've posted something under complications which is a bit disparate - but not what i'd consider a 'vent' and now you're posting something here saying you're tired of it? Tired of what, exactly? People on the Sleeve forum? The Sleeve? The surgery comparison debate? If someone is being negative towards you or your choices, you have the option to ignore and report. If you're wanting to state your dissatisfaction with how people debate these issues - you're entitled. However, this is not original thought and you'll be joining a long queue!
  11. hi ...this is freaky!--but it won't deter me. Odds are that you and I will do just fine like most do. I will definately be scared pre-op, but I am ready. Maybe the complication was to do with the surgeon? or maybe she did not watch whart she ate? or maybe it was one of those one in --- chances of it really going bad. stay focused---i will too. we can do it!
  12. I don't think I would personally do it.. I was one of the rare complication cases and 6 surgeries later I am so glad I had my surgery in Toronto with cdn doctors there is another thread you may want to read that thread too and take all the advice there into account. I would get rock solid contracts if i was going out of country and make sure that they are applicable under both cdn and the other countries laws... deal with post op including complications and who pays etc. Good luck with your decision Heather

Pain on left side, sometimes under my ribs

fresh out of surgery I ended up in the ER and back in hospital with aspiration pneumonia, an acute UTI and critically low potassium. I’m pretty sure the uti was due to the catheter being in place so long after surgery. I don’t know why they kept it in to monitor my output until the day I was to be discharged. They kept telling me my chest pain was gas, I kept saying no it’s not. It wasn’t. Any liquids I sipped were being aspirated into my lungs. It was pneumonia. I just don’t get fevers like normal people do. Maybe my immunodeficiency. I don’t know. I went home to intermittent fevers. It would spike really high at night and go down by morning. My body doesn’t fight what it needs to. So then doctors don’t think I’m sick if my body doesn’t maintain a consistent fever. The ER did a chest X-ray, bloodwork etc. and admitted me. I hate hospitals. I got stuck there three days with IV potassium and antibiotics. The hard part was I could barely move. After my surgery I was basically bed bound, when the nurse tried to get me up to walk I made it to the hall and had to hurry back to bed before I passed out. Every chronic pain in my body screamed bloody murder all at once. This round in hospital wasn’t much better. I waited for tests, they kept trying to give me regular food so I wasn’t getting protein. Long story short, they did a swallow study which showed dysphasia and every time I drank thinner liquids, ie. Water, thinner shakes. It puts me at risk of aspiration. I’m still struggling to find the cause. It’s esophageal Dysphasia. So my gastroenterologist said it’s not his area, my ent said it’s not his area it’s neurological but so far the neurologist doesn’t know and is sending me to another neurologist. I had a bad reaction to the antibiotic I was sent home with. And ended up with severe oral thrush. Im getting those chest pains that extend down under my ribs again. I had a upper gi fluoroscopy and endoscopy. I was told I have a sliding hiatal hernia, Schatzki ring, ulcers, and a stoma stricture (severely narrow stoma) Nothing as of yet is resolved. I see my surgeon next month. I don’t regret fighting for the surgery. It was my last hope to fight against metabolic disorders and inability to exercise, to lose weight. It was eating me alive. I am having a hard time of things but most people even with complications do very well. For me it’s hard to separate out all my other medical issues from recovery.
  14. I felt the opposite. He said by-pass was outdated and had far more complications than the band and sleeve. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  15. I was more interested in the bypass at first, got approved for it and everything but as I got closer to my date my surgeon ran a blood test to check my iron levels because I have chronic anemia. 1 week before my procedure I was told by my surgeon that I should consider the sleeve instead. Me being stubborn I was so stuck on getting the bypass because I thought it would be way more effective in weight loss than the sleeve until he revealed to me that I was at a much higher risk of complications because I'm extremely anemic. I agreed to the sleeve and they resubmitted my letter to my insurance company. Everything went smooth after.
  16. My surgeon did not try to sell me on the RNY. I told him I was interested in the sleeve or band and we never even talked about the bypass. I actually saw his original presentation on WLS about 5 years ago but I didn't qualify. He was just starting to perform the sleeve then. He discussed RNY, band and sleeve. I would say he discouraged the band. My stats are not too different than yours. I was 257 and 5'3" as my starting weight. I had a 6 months insurance mandated diet and was at 242 at the start of my 10 day liquid pre op diet. I am 6.5 months out and am at 174. I am still losing, more slowly that when I first sleeved, but still losing. There are plenty of people on this board who have had sleeves and are well below the 180-190 that she quoted to you. If you are not comfortable with what this surgeon is telling you go talk to another one or two. Just because every one else loves her does not mean she is the right one for you. You need to be comfortable with your surgeon and the surgery. If you do decide on the sleeve I would recommend a different surgeon. You want a surgeon that believes in the sleeve and has a program designed for the sleeve not one modified from RNY. You don't want to have a minor stall or complication and feel like she is thinking "Well this wouldn't have happened it you followed my advise and had RNY". You want a surgeon that has done a large number of sleeves not one that does them occasionally, under duress.

    surgery and flight booked

I certainly understand your concern, especially as you are quickly approaching your surgery date. I'm glad you paid attention to both the good stories and the unfortunate stories as well. That's life, sadly there is always bad that goes along with good. Though it's difficult for us to admit, we do not have control of the universe and there are certain things that are totally out of our control. You've certainly done your homework and weighed all of the pros and cons. You know yourself better than anyone else and have made the decision to do this. That's the best any of us can do, that and pray that we have made the right decision. In February I will have been banded for 4 years with zero complications. I consider complications as those things we have no control over, such as band slippage, erosion, infections. We have no way of knowing whether or not any of those things will happen to any of us, it's a chance we have been willing to take. Things like PB's, vomitting, constipation are all things we do have control over, it's a learning process we go through and even after this long, I am still learning and will probably continue to learn until the day I die, hopefully around 150ish :-] The most difficult part of this whole process for me has been facing the emotional issues, but they are worth going through and overcoming. I see it as a kind of insurance policy against my gaining my weight back. I wish you the very best of luck and will keep you in my prayers that everything goes according to textbook and that you fly through your recooperation and start a new and wonderful life. Cindy
  20. Hi everyone, Abby so great to hear that your surgery went well..no complications thats great. Your blog is also very insightful. Sorry to hear that you have no restriction. I'm curious to know how did you realize that to be the case? Dr. Weber told me that he does the first fill after 6 weeks so does that mean given ur situation that you will have to wait that long, or will he fill it sooner? Please keep up your blog..it really helps me to gain a clear idea about like after banding. I hope everything went well for you Parshuter. Can't wait to hear about your experience. You stated that the blog is not your thing so I hope you keep this thread going. So for you Chris..details details details! Good luck guys!
  21. Hi, I went for my consultation today and was pleasantly surprised. Dr. Scott Laker (Great Lakes Weight Loss Clinic) was very friendly, and really took the time to answer all of my questions. He mentioned that he believes everybody should go to the seminar and get as much information as possible. I will try to attend the seminar next Tuesday, which is also the day I start my pre-op diet. I will be banded on August 25th, by Dr. Laker at 1 PM. I am very comfortable with the process now. The people at Great Lakes, really took the time to go through everything with me. Where I was very nervous before, I am really excited now. They helped put me at ease. They answered all of my questions from, what I need to do before surgery, to the surgery itself, and then what to expect after being banded. Dr. Laker also answerd all of my complication questions. I couldn't be happier. I saw some information on the lap band about 17 months ago, and thought to myself, that this is the tool I need to finally be free of the pain and suffering from being MO. I didn't really think about it seriously again until about 3 months ago. Thats when my wife told me about an add she saw online for Great Lakes and their $10,700, special they were doing for self pays! I actually planned on seeing Dr. Weiner, but didn't specify when I called a couple weeks ago, and they set me up with Dr. Laker. I look forward to being on this site, with my "bandmates". If you have any questions please ask, I hope to keep this thread going! Thanks, Pars
  22. Hey Noor, I realized that I didn't have restriction when I started eating mushies, which was this week. The pouch is only meant to hold 3-6 ounces, I can eat WAY more than that, so it's obvious that the food is just sliding right through. That being said, I do feel fuller faster than I did before I had the surgery, so I'm confident that with fills I will reach that "sweet-spot." That's correct, Dr. Webber doesn't do fills until six weeks, and I'd say most surgeons wait 4-6 weeks before doing the first fill. Sometimes it happens sooner, but that's usually on a case-by-case basis. They want to make sure you're fully healed first. I've heard that the time between the surgery is a time to focus on healing, and if weight-loss happens you are lucky. I guess I was just hoping I'd be one of those lucky ones. I am not getting my fills with Dr. Webber because it's an inconvenience for me to go back to Detroit. He gave me the go-ahead to see a surgeon in Chicago to get my aftercare, and that surgeon also requires you to be six weeks post-op before receiving your first fill. When are you having your surgery? I'm glad that my blog is giving you some insight, I found it really helpful to talk to people who were banded by the same physician/group when I was preparing for surgery as well. If you are still nervous about the surgery, don't be. I'm going to give it to you straight. The pre-op diet isn't fun, and the first couple days after surgery are the worst. Also, the first couple of weeks of the post-op diet are hard, but after that life is almost 100% normal again. Then it's pretty much the waiting game to find that "sweet spot" (unless you are one of the lucky ones), and then you're pretty much good to go. This is assuming you don't have complications. You're in good hands with Dr. Webber, though. I was told by MANY of the staff at the hospital that he was a great surgeon, and his credentials speak for themselves. If you have any other questions let me know.
  23. Thanks LibbyJane, it sounds like you are doing really well. I have heard a lot of good things about Harper Hospital. Where is Dr. Gazayerli out of? Have you had any problems with your fills? At your office who does the fills? Is it the Dr.? One of my real worries is having a complication with a fill, like a puncture to the tube of band itself. Thanks :juggle:
  24. Hi, Sheri, i am about 2 hrs. Away in Ashland, Ky. I have lots of family there in Lexington. I would love to have someone to talk to that has been sleeved. I was sleeved April 3, 2013. I doing well, no complications, and feeling great!! Down 55#.
  25. Hi, I am just starting out, and I already know my ins. doesn't cover the Lap Band surgery. I have looked into a few doctors and am considering Dr. Weiner, out of Harper hospital. Has anybody gone with this doctor? Any information would be very helpful. Also, I am wondering how many people that have gone with the Lap Bnd have had complications and wouldn't do it again. I am nervous that, because I am self pay, if there are any complications, my cost will go up much higher, trying to fix the problems. Thanks
