  1. So very true! I don't know why people are so worried when people are doing things to better their health! Even before WLS... I found things that "worked" better than others. For example, I struggled with major/severe exhaustion because of my then undiagnosed sleep apnea/ insomnia - so I was so tired I went to bed at 8 pm most nights (also was a very early riser). During that time, I found that I couldn't lose weight if I ate after 4 pm. OMG... the HORROR... I wasn't eating for the last 4 hours of my evening?!!! Yet several of my friends stayed up until 10/11 and didn't eat past 6/7pm. So, what is the difference?! I mean, I ate plenty throughout the day... just not at the END of the day. And drinking calories. If I had one bad nutrition habit, that was it. So I would do my best to avoid calorie filled drinks during any weight loss plan I had. And more importantly... I found I could NEVER lose weight and often gained if I drank any alcohol. Even just half a glass of wine. So I would go to a party and do my best not to drink alcohol. My friends were losing it because I didn't want to get drunk with them. They couldn't handle if I didn't drink anything or just had half a glass of wine. I actually had to ditch some friends that I used to love hanging out with because they couldn't handle that I wasn't willing to give in and drink with them every single time we got together. And exercise? Well... I hate most exercise lol. But I love my long walks. People think I am crazy because my go to walk is 6 miles and takes 1 hour and 45 minutes and they just don't get it. But I enjoy it. It is hardly a workout for me, but I feel great afterwards. But somehow it is wrong for me to take my long walks. People are crazy the way they react to others.
  2. I started having consults the month I reached goal (7 months post-op) with the intention of getting it done in a couple months. Turns out my doc was booked up, so I had to wait anyway. I ended up getting arm lift, breast lift and tummy tuck 6.5 months into maintenance (14 months post-op over all). In retrospect its good that there was a wait time because I ended up losing another 15-ish lbs by the time PS surgery came around. My doc did say that in terms of effect on results, weight loss results in more effect on results than weight gain. The reason being that scar tissue may not shrink as well as it expands. My PS was done in Dec 2019, and I'm supremely happy that I had it done. Having tight arms in tank tops and being able to go braless in a tube top is pure joy, lol. P.S. I had mine done in Canada, so I can offer no personal recommendations. I do hear that Columbia is an inexpensive and reliable place to consider though.
  3. Hi everyone I am just 3 days post-op and have been reading a lot about loose skin, mostly about how much people have once reaching their goal and whether to have PS. I realize surgery is the only proven way to address loose skin but I’ve heard some anecdotal reports of other methods too that may help minimize it. I haven’t seen many posts talking about what non surgical treatments people have tried that may have helped at all (collagen, compression clothes, exercise etc) and to what extent you felt any improvement. Also what problems or annoyances you have had with loose skin (is it bulky through the clothes, is it uncomfortable to exercise) and what you did to help this before or instead of surgery. Hearing everyone’s successes has me looking forward to nice fitting stylish clothes and moving my body in a way that has not felt comfortable for at least 10 years. But I also want to learn whatever might work to reduce the loose skin or tools to help deal with it. Thanks in advance for everyone’s input.
  4. Hi! I had surgery on March 10th 2021. From 3 week Pre-op until now, I have lost a total of 19 pounds (nearing 6 weeks total time). I have not lost any weight in the last 10 days. I’ve spent a good period of time assuring myself by reading the great feedback on others posts about similar questions but, most suggest the 3 week stall and I have heard that the stall can happen 2-4 weeks post surgery. Has anyone ever heard of a stall basically right out of the gate? I am tracking - I am at 600 calories/day and 60g of protein. My Pre-Op Diet Start Weight was 257 and I am currently 238. Thanks in advance for the advice and feedback, a little challenging to not be discouraged!
  5. My surgery weight was 220. Idk what my goal weight is. I’m sorta scared to set one. I have lost 8 pounds in 19 days since surgery it was about a pound every two days but now I seem to have stalled.
  6. Yes that is normal. You have water and gas in you so you will the scale a little higher. Give it a week to 2 weeks and you will see move down. I gained 10 pounds from the surgery and two weeks after I was down 15. Give it time you will see. Sent from my SM-G781U using BariatricPal mobile app

How often do you weigh yourself?

I have 10 years of data on my fitness pal showing me that every time I stop weighing myself routinely then I have a dramatic spike in weight. I’m very head-in-the-sand about weight gain, so I know I have to keep an eye on it. Normally I would be a once-a-day weigher, but since I’m in active weight loss right now I’m trying to limit it to 2-3x a week. That way I can (usually) see the scale drop at least a little each time and I don’t drive myself crazy with fluctuations.
  8. regardless of where you started, the last 20 or so lbs are a bear to get off. It's that way for "normal" people, too. The closer you are to a normal BMI, the harder it is to lose weight. I remember years ago at Weight Watchers meetings listening to these normal weight or slightly overweight women b**ch and scream about how hard it was to lose 10 lbs. Yeah right. I'd just sit there and roll my eyes. Try losing 100+ lbs! But now I totally get it. It IS hard! But just keep at it. I was losing like 1-2 lbs a MONTH when I got to that point - but I finally did make it...

  10. Hey fellow DSers... Just a little story from me, a DSer roughly 2 1/2 years out. I underwent the DS on 8/13/2018, and effortlessly lost over 100% of my excess weight. So during the 2020 lockdown I think a number of circumstances contributed to me gaining ~30 pounds of regain! I'm not sure when the regain precisely started, probably sometime in April 2020, since I wasn't logging my weight by that time. Now to the DS's credit, even with that 30 pounds I was still within the "normal" BMI for my height, at around 24 BMI. This regain wasn't disastrous, but I certainly didn't like the trend. Basically I believe I got overconfident in the DS, and what the DS can do. The DS does have an "achilles-heel" and that's simple refined carbs. The powerful malabsorption properties of the DS are defeated by simple refined grains and simple sugars. In addition, those foods seem to be "slider foods" as I can fill up quickly, but they pass though the sleeve quickly so I'm ready for more.. For some reason (depression, low fat absorption, who knows) I developed quite the sweet tooth, and I ate as much chocolate and candy that I wanted (which was a lot). I also ate processed high-carb-laden frozen foods, grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, pizza, fast-food breakfasts and lunches, etc. I didn't eat a huge amount at once, as I still have good restriction.. but it all added up. Oh and of course no physical activity or exercise. On around Jan 21st I decided to take control again and got back to basics... eliminated all simple carbs/sugars/etc, logged and counted calories, though I didn't exercise. The DS worked it's magic, and I'll post a screenshot of my weight log over the past 2 months. The last time I logged my weight in MyFitnessPal was Dec. 7th, 2019 at 133.2 lbs. I'm not sure why I stopped logging - probably because my weight didn't move much at that point. I made it my goal to lose all my regain since that point - so 133.2 lbs. was my goal. It's really a bit low a weight for me, but I wanted to start from where I last left off and rebuild good habits from that point, not a point of regain. The loss wasn't really that difficult, and I wasn't really all that hungry very often. I still have good restriction - the "cottage cheese" tests seems to indicate I have about a 6.5 oz sleeve capacity, may 7 or 7.5 if pushed or with certain foods, and less with dense proteins. I love the DS. Best decision ever.

    Any March Surgeries?

Hey I hear all of you. I just had surgery yesterday, came home this afternoon and barraged by food commercials, then my family had sushi while I sipped my miso soup. But one good bit of news I read on this site, Wendy’s chili! Apparently that is a fast food we’ll (eventually ) be able to eat. anybody else having difficulty knowing when to stop sipping. I hate to push it but I’m trying to find that magic number of sips that will make me full. For now I’m just drinking from 15/30 ml cups ever 5-10 minutes
  12. Hey guys I really need some guidance and help right now. So I'm about 10 weeks post op and will be going to Myrtle Beach for a week with my family. I'm excited but I'm worried about food, anyone know places there that are bariatric friendly or ideas on what I should bring? It's just a simple hotel so all I can think is protein shakes? But with the stage I'm at am I able to eat protein bars? Or the meal replacement ones? Still not sure about snacks even though I'm not a snacker...any help would be appreciated. 2 week Liquid Diet Cheat

Hey I am also struggling with pre-op. Today was my first day. I’m allowed liquids, protein shakes, 2 lean solid proteins like eggs, chicken, Greek yogurt, and vegetables. No fat/carbs. I feel like I’m starving, my head hurts, and I have a short fuse with my twins. Considering that all these docs have different pre-op diets, it feels somewhat arbitrary and I hate doing things that don’t feel meaningful. So I just re-frame it in my mind “this is a challenge I can overcome and I’ll feel good knowing I did if.” Other diets felt pointless after awhile bc I knew I couldn’t sustain it forever. I’m like - 10 days - I can do this! I’m just hoping it gets easier!!
  14. My gastric bypass surgery was on February 24th. I’ve been very sick since. Regurgitating all food I eat except liquids, within 5-10 minutes. When I try to eat, I eat one to two bites out of a kid spoon. At this point I’m starting to get malnourished. I can’t keep any food down at all, not even my protein shakes. My surgeon has suspicions that this may be a stricture. I go in on the 7th of April for an EGD to check. Has anyone else had any problems with a stricture? What was recovery like? Did it set you back at all?
  15. The 23rd of March was my 1 month sleev-a-versary so I thought I'd post an update. I'd love to hear how others who are about a month out are doing, so feel free to share the good, bad, or gross (and I do mean poo talk). My recovery has thankfully been uneventful. I had the normal struggles in the first week (nausea, water/protein intake, gas pain, uncomfortable sleeping) but nothing terrible. I have had some poo struggle days, that has been the worst! Right now the pipes are working (cross fingers) but a week ago - hoo boy, not great. I've discovered that I need to take a stool softener at least every other day or things stop moving. My energy has been better, but there are still days when I can't believe how tired I feel just walking up the stairs. I graduated to the pureed stage this week (my program does full liquids for 4 weeks) which was exciting but also a little scary to try "new" foods on my tiny tummy and see how she did. So far, she has handled everything like a champ and I am really enjoying eating more than protein shakes, protein soup, and yogurt. I've lost 19 pounds since my surgery day and can feel a difference in how my body moves, how much less pain I have in my joints, and how my clothes fit. I can bend at the waist more comfortably, balance on one foot better, and crossing my arms or my legs is comfortable again. I tried on a dress that I wore to a family wedding in January of last year and was shocked to see how baggy it was on me. One of my biggest WLS fears was my emotional state taking a downturn during recovery and from not being able to eat normally. I'm happy to say that hasn't happened, in fact it's been the opposite. I feel like I have a stronger perspective and more balanced moods overall. I think seeing some immediate positive results in how my body feels is part of the reason, along with having finally done the thing I spent so long thinking and worrying about. Now that I am on the other side I am experiencing what the reality of WLS is for me rather than worrying about what it might be.
  16. I could only drink the protein shakes really cold over ice. have you tried that or mixing it with milk so it's thinner and less sweet? You can try protein water (sold at Walmart and other grocery stores). Others loved them but they had a slight dry/chalky after taste so poured over a lot of ice helped and I could drink it that way. You can also buy Fairlife skim milk that has more protein. I had to play a mental game initially to get enough protein and would pour 2 ounces in a shot glass and make myself take a sip after playing a game on my phone so I would sip and after 10-15 minutes I got that 2 ounces drank. I would also do it while watching TV and made my self drink the 2 ounces shot glass half way between every set of commercials. That way it didn't seem too overwhelming. Greek yogurt also has a lot of protein that you may be able to blend with milk so it's not as thick.
  17. I hit 50# weight loss ( pre-op and post-op). I am getting closer to Wonderland! Gastric Sleeve is making the difference and making this seem doable and I feel in control for once. HW 264 ( 10/30/20) SW 235 ( 2/24/21) CW 214 ( 3/27/21) GW 130 ( TBD)
  18. I've been trying to lose a 10 lb COVID regain and am trying to do more of this, too - asking myself WHY I want something. Sometimes I truly am hungry - but other times it's just because I'm stressed - or bored. I've been working on trying to recognize that and finding alternative ways of dealing with it. It often saves a couple hundred calories a day (and sometimes more!) that I'd otherwise be eating!
  19. 10 days isn't too long of a wait. I would agree that televisits seem strange for the first time meet. I would need at least one in-person visit to feel comfortable before surgery.
  20. Greetings Mae7365, I certainly don’t feel like a “virgin” RYGB individual. As you said in your post, “We’ve been there, done that”. We’ve gone from our VSG into a RYGB revision to tackle difficult health issues. Ever since the RYGB and hiatal hernia surgeries, I haven’t had any amount of GERD. My lower belly abdominal pains are gone. My erosive esophagitis is now healing. This amazing RYGB surgery has done wonders for tackling any medical conditions I had going into the RYGB revision surgery. I just figured out that I will be on full liquid diet for another 10 days. I bought on Amazon a good book on getting the most from the full liquid diet BEGINNERS GUIDE TO FULL LIQUID DIET FOR WEIGHT LOSS: BEGINNERS FRIENDLY GUIDE TO FULL LIQUID DIET FOR WEIGHT LOSS & HEALTHY LIFESTYLE . It’s a very good guide.
  21. 10 days, but it's a televisit. That seems kind of a weird way to meet a surgeon/doctor I've never met before but we'll see.
  22. Welp, I have my surgery date. God willing, I will have my procedure on July 26, 2021. That gives me time to get ready and also have a little more tenure on my job (I just started in January). I paid my first 10% deposit today (fully-refundable as long as I give 30 days' notice of cancellation). The doctor warned me that my stomach might not be completely flat, it might retain some roundness, which made me laugh. I'm not expecting a six-pack or anything, I just want to get rid of some of this bulk! Just being able to put on a one-piece swimsuit without a skirt will be monumental!
  23. It has been 7 months, and 2 days since my WLS. I finally hit my GOAL when weighing in this morning. I have never been this small in my adult life. It is such a great feeling, knowing that everything I worked for up to this point has been worth it. My ONLY regret is that I didn't do this 10 years ago. I have lost 81 lbs., went from a size 20 jeans, now in a size 6, (I posted a few days ago that I was a size 8, but my new jeans were actually too big, and I had to get a size 6). I am sooooooo happy!!! 😄😄😄😄😄
  24. You bet! At 7 years post op, it’s definitely harder. I’m up 35 pounds from my goal weight I maintained for quite a few years. But life happened, and I went back to old habits. As time goes on after surgery, the easier it is to overeat. I’m happy to say I’m back on track again! And let me tell you, eating less and eating protein and lots of fiber has really brought my sleeve restriction back! I’m down 5 pounds and am already feeling physically better. Guys, don’t ignore weight gain after maintenance. You’ll have some “bounce” weight where your body wants to be, and that’s completely normal. But any gain after that take seriously. I was doing the “It’s only 10 pounds” It’s only 15 pounds” until 35 pounds, and then was like “What the hell happened??” I don’t want to get tiny again like the pic on the left at my lowest. I was comfortable at 160, and that’s realistically what I’m shooting for. I can do this! And YOU can, too! Oh, pic on the right is me currently.
