    May 2023 surgeries

Recovery is going well for me from my surgery on the 2nd. Not in too much pain anymore and moving around better! Pretty much meeting my protein goal daily by adding unflavored protein powder to my water, broth, pudding, etc. Sipping all throughout the day and staying hydrated! I’m excited to be 37 pounds down from my heaviest weight as of this morning! I can’t stress how important it is to walk walk walk. Does not have to be fast! But get yourself moving!! It helps with the pain and soreness and keeps blood clots away!! Of course, don’t overdo it! But every step helps!!!

    Goal weight is within reach!!!!

I don't know about bilirubin specifically, but it's not unusual for liver enzymes (such as AST and ALT) to be high the first year or so after surgery. Evidently rapid weight loss is pretty hard on livers. My (as well as a few others' whom I know) had high readings the first year, but then they normalized during year 2, when weight loss slowed to a crawl. I'm not sure if that's true of bilirubin levels or not, though (although that's also produced by the liver). It's good they're checking it out just to be sure there's nothing weird going on.

    My Gastric Sleeve Journey

Welcome and good luck on your journey. When I started my journey my highest weight was 382. I knew I had to do something, I struggled all my life and it was time to fix it. I started having health complications and worked with my endocrinologist on a plan. I started to work to loose weight on my own, while I explored WLS. I managed to loose 57 pound before I got my sleeve and I’m down 65 lbs since my surgery in Aug 2022 (making my total loss 122 lbs). I get a little frustrated that I’m not loosing faster, but I’m very proud that my weight loss (despite being slower than I’d like) has been steady. Keep up the great work. Remember that everyone’s journey is different, you’ll get there in your own time!!
  4. Started at 317lb before surgery. Its been almost a year and 1 month since. Weighed myself today and i am at 189lb. Only 9 more pounds to go to reach my intended goal weight tho if i loose more then awesome!! I actually gained weight about a month or 2 ago and that was my fault do to eating poorly... donuts and donuts and donuts... Its hard because they get delivered fresh to my job everyday and they just taunt me in the display case... lol So i think i will be loosing a lot more weight soon next month because i am moving to a place in the pacific northwest with tons of outdoor trails and hiking which i love to do but here in Florida its too hot to do outside stuff most of the year like that haha. I will be doing the van life thing so planet fitness membership for showers and of course working out everyday which i have not done much of this past year. So i will be resetting my goal weight to 160lb. and i reach that that will blow my mind. I had my 1 year follow up last week. Doctor was like "did you forget to take your vitamins? i told her yes... for about a month or so. She was like SEEEE thats proof they work because my vitamin labs were low. so yea i gotta take it everyday. They are referring me to a GI doctor due to my climbing Biliruben levels. Surgeon does not know why it keeps going up. I had a nuclear scan of my gall bladder and its working just fine without any blockage.

  6. hello so I've had the lapband for year and a half and although I haven't lost much weight with it I'm still not giving up I do get hungry at nights and there is a supplement called protrim plus have any of u heard it? Well it's a natural supplement u take it before dinner and it expans in your stomach causing you to be full it's pretty much fiber do you think I'm able to take that or will it affect the band causing me to be in pain like if food was stuck? I don't think it would beacuse it goes to ur actual stomach if I can swallow capsules no problem it shouldn't be a problem right since it goes to the stomach ??

I hope you didn’t intentionally gain weight just to qualify for surgery.

    Stall

Stalls are a important part of your weight loss. It’s when your body stops to get used to the changes, assesses your new needs & readjusts things like the hormones involved in digestion, metabolic rate, etc. You’ll start losing weight again when your body is ready. How many stalls you have or how long each one lasts don’t have any affect on your final weight loss. I agree: stick to your plan, stay off the scales. And yes, they always break. All the best.

    Weight stall 7 days PO

The same thing happened to me. It was so frustrating. Just remember… you had major surgery, your body is healing and trying to balance everything for homeostasis, and you’re still in the process of rebuilding energy stores around your liver. My stall broke a couple days into week 2 and came back a week later 😭 lol it felt like I couldn’t win, but here I am 24lbs lost and still going with mini stalls every week for a few days or so. Eventually, they break. Remember the science…if you’re taking in less than you burn while resting, you will lose weight. Just remember to get all your protein and water right now. Be easy on yourself!
  10. I had my sleeve surgery done late Wednesday and still feeling a lot of pain despite being on opioids. When can I expect the pain to go away? I gained about 5lbs of water weight since surgery. Hoping the swelling will go down. At what day could you comfortable do a 10-15 walk? Walking still seems really painful now
  11. Hi Mil I feel for you my daughter has eds so I know what you going through she has had the sleeve done and loosing her weight very slowly I had the bypass 2yrs ago and have regained about 8lbs it's hard to stop the gain but I guess we need to move back to the basic things we did in the beginning hope you get lots of advice and encouragement Jan e t

    Little to no weightloss

The answers simple, keep off the scales. Just keep going, what have you got to loose but weight Sent from my Lenovo TB-J606F using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. Hi Mil, there was a time when my youngest was a preschooler that EDS was on the table as one of the things that could be causing his other more apparent medical issues. Eventually it was ruled out, but I did do a lot of reading about the disorder. I can't imagine how scary it is to live with and all the injuries you have sustained can't make that any easier. I hope that there are more treatments available now than there used to be (practically none). About the regain, I haven't been there yet since I'm a freshly hatched chick and still on the down slope (up slope?). However, I feel like you have the tools and know what to do, so you will be able to lose it! I wouldn't fret too much about trying to do any kind of moderate exercise. It doesn't really contribute that much to weight loss, and keeping your joints together is more important! Can you just do the exercises that PT has given you in the past and make a workout plan around those? I'm not sure what they have you do, of course, so not sure how feasible that is. Maybe water exercise would be safest for you? Anyway, I have faith in your ability to get back to where you were. I know it is important for your health. 🤗

    Little to no weightloss

Thanks to everyone who has replied. I spoke to the dietician today, who agreed my weigthloss is on the much slower side. I asked what my pre op weight was as I thought it was 21 stone 9 but it was 21 stone 4. This has really hit me hard. After 3 weeks post off when I weighed myself and thinking I hadn’t lost any, I was actually 5lb heavier. So really I have lost 14lb in 11 weeks. It’s just not good enough and my mental health has taken a huge nose dive. I suffer from CPTSD and this really isn’t helping. 14lb in 11 weeks. It’s an absolute joke. I can’t handle another week of looking at the scales and them staying the same. The surgery just doesn’t work for some people and unfortunately I’m in that bracket. I can lose 14lb in 1-2 weeks with my previous methods and what made me gain weight after that was the dreaded cycle of habit and yo yo dieting. At least the surgery has given me the tool to not be able to go back to old habits. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to reply to me. Thank you. Good luck to everyone on your journeys x

    Weight stall 7 days PO

A stall can be classified as a stall when you stay the same weight for 6 weeks. Often after surgery particularly when being on an IV, people can gain weight from the fluids. This whole thing is a long term plan. If you focus on the scales you will drive yourself nuts. Weight yourself once a week or once a month. Measure your body with a measuring tape and record the numbers. Do it again in once a month. Focus on other goals in your life or fitness levels or doing practical things as you work your way to achieving other outcomes in your life. Day by day. Baby steps.

Your surgery hasn’t failed. You have lost weight - yay! This is likely a stall as others have suggested. Stalls are very common. Almost everyone experiences them & they are an important part of your weight loss (it’s when your body pauses to reassess your new needs & resets digestive hormones, metabolic rate, etc.). They often last 1-3 weeks but for some they can be longer. The stall will break when your body is ready. Just stick to your plan & don’t stress your body more. And yes I know even with knowing this, stalls can still feel frustrating. We all lose our weight at our own rate. There’s no wrong or right amount you have to lose each week. There are just averages which only give you a bit of an idea of what you might experience not what you definitely will. Being a slow loser doesn’t mean you won’t lose all your weight either. It just means it may take you a little longer & that’s okay too.

    Weight Regain at 3 Weeks

This will happen often while you are losing. Your weight loss won’t ever be a consistent straight line on a graph. It will go up & down, zig & zag & plateau. All to be expected. Our weight always fluctuates even when stable. Hormones, water retention, constipation, diarrhoea, eating or drinking a little more or a little less, doing more or less activity, etc. all play a part.
  18. I use daily on days off, and had zero issues. I don’t get munchies or tempted eat/overeat. It has not slowed my weight loss a bit having lost 135lbs in the last 6 months. Lots of people have prejudices towards it because of misinformation and lack of education. Just be careful as smoking it can cause ulcers to form, which is why I use sugar free edibles or vape.
  19. Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and didn't really know where to begin, so I figured why not start a thread about my journey? So, I've always been kind of obese (there were a few years that I lost a lot of weight sticking to a low carb diet) I hovered around 300lbs give or take for many years. In 2012 during a divorce, I ballooned all the way up to 365lbs and I swore I'd never get to that point again. I started doing low carb and got all the way down to 235lbs before getting re-married and gaining back about 50lbs. During COVID in 2020, I just completely fell apart and ended up getting to my all-time highest weight of 385lbs. I drive trucks for a living and in August of 2022, I had to go for a sleep apnea test and I failed miserably. Failing the sleep apnea test put my career in jeopardy. I decided immediately afterwards to contact my local hospital about bariatric surgery and immediately started a 6 month program in October, 2022. Since I had already had the sleep apnea test and failed, I'd already knocked that part out at least. I literally just got back from my final doctors appointment and they told me that it's up to my insurance provider to approve or deny me for surgery. I'm really excited but also really nervous. The only time I've ever stayed in a hospital overnight was to take my sleep apnea tests. I started this journey at 385lbs, today I weighed in at 365lbs. I had my ups and downs, but I'm really looking forward to this journey and really looking forward to getting to know everyone and to share my journey.

    Little to no weightloss

I understand your frustration. When I was about one week post op, I hit my first stall. ONE WEEK! I only had water, some broth and that’s it. So why the heck wasn’t I losing weight?? To make matters worse, my hubby, who ate take out twice that week, lost three pounds. WHAT!? I was totally insulted… and I started to think it was my body again. Always trying to keep me fat. Years of struggle and here I am eating 400 cals a day and not losing anything?? One week later, a small movement. But every time I changed food stages, another stall. That was four stalls in six weeks. Very frustrating. I knew my BMR was 1400, so staying around 600-800 calories with high protein and low carb would HAVE to work. It’s not the program as much as it is the science. a couple things I’ve noticed… 1. If I’m sick or have an allergy episode, I will stall or even gain 2. if I drink Gatorade or artificial sweeteners of any kind, I will stall 3. if I don’t have regular daily bowel movements, I will stall. This one is so hard to deal with. 4. If I don’t get enough sleep, I will stall. 5. When I started eating higher protein than recommended (90 recommended, I have 110), I will lose. Even if the carbs go up slightly. 6. If I eat too many processed foods in a day, like protein bars, drinks or snacks, I will stall. 7. If I don’t get enough pure water, I will stall. You might have some sensitivities like these or others…. Really examen what you’re taking in, not just the calories and fat. It’s a puzzle you gotta figure out for yourself. It’s hard work. But I believe you can do it. Just vent and get back in there! 😃
  21. I HIT MY GOAL WEIGHT! (Well, actually surpassed it) My goal weight was 135 & I woke up weighing 134! It's been 8 months since my surgery

    Why am I so depressed

I'm so sorry you're having a mental struggle, and I completely empathize. I also have been experiencing a weird and nebulous relationship with myself. I've had clinical depression for several years, but my medication has always been able to help keep me afloat. Right now I feel kind of disconnected from my body, and I haven't seen the results that others see in me yet. A lot of times I find myself doubting if the surgery really worked, or if I'll ever get to my goals. I'm having a hard time processing the work and effort and the results I'm actually getting - I think, for me personally, it is because I've gone so long putting in work and never getting results. Now that I am (even if I can't see them), it doesn't feel right. So I'm getting in touch with a therapist to help me work through it. Can you reach out to your weight loss program and ask to be included in a support group? A counselor might also be helpful (something I also have experience with). I'm wishing you all the best. ❤️

    Little to no weightloss

Stop. You're making yourself crazy. Get off the scale. You can't eat 800 calories a day and not lose weight, eventually. It'll happen. Your body is still healing from a very traumatic surgery. You're going to have swelling and water retention for months. This is a normal and expected part of the process. If you're doing what you're supposed to be doing, then you have nothing to worry about. You'll get there. It takes time for our metabolism to get the message. Depriving your healing tissues of the protein they need in order to heal, is not something that I would suggest. You could cause yourself more harm than good.

    Weight stall 7 days PO

Stalls are a normal part of the process. If you're doing everything you're supposed to be doing, then you can trust that your weight will eventually get to where it's supposed to be. If the scale is making you crazy, stay off of it.

    Stall?

I'm 6.5 month po and have been in a stall for almost 2 months. The scale finally moved this morning! HalleluYah! Stalls are a normal part of the process. You just have to trust that if you're doing what you're supposed to do, your weight will eventually get to where it's supposed to be. After surgery, our stomachs are traumatized. They are firm and tight, due to the trauma of surgery. Because of this, we have a lot of restriction. It takes about a year for them to fully settle down and relax. As your tummy relaxes, you will be able to eat larger amounts of food. We have to be mindful not to overeat, as this happens. Just because we can, doesn't mean we should.
