is this normal? my stomach aches on and off throughout the day
andielmt posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
for the past month my stomach has been aching. it doesnt bother me when i eat but say an hour or two after. it feels like the band is eating its way through my stomach. its like a toothache on the outside. i know that you cant feel the band but im convinced that you can. what else would this be. alot of times i feel tight. i had my third fill on tues and i am eating very little due to the fact that my doctor said that i am tight. today i had a ww meal and ate the whole thing but thats as much as ive eaten since my fill. ive had slimfast , almonds, yogurt, protein bars. i am happy that im cautious again but im a little worried about the aching. i dont dare eat much in case this is a sign of overeating. what do you think? andrea -
We can often develop food intolerances immediately postop with lactose being one of the most common. That could be the cause of the pain and diarrhea. For me, lactose, artificial sweeteners and plain Water caused severe pain, but fortunately the intolerances went away after about 4 months. Maybe try not drinking the Protein shakes or yogurt for a few days and see if it gets better. You can use almond or coconut milk or even Lactaid milk and an egg, soy or hemp Protein powder to get in your protein during that time. Even an ultra filtered 100% whey powder might work since it is much lower in lactose than the premier Protein drinks. And I definitely second the Probiotics suggestion. Look for a product with 20-30 different strains and at least 50 billion CFU found in the refrigerated section of most whole/health food stores.

6 mo stall, and first gain
Erikanbmws replied to mnmlst's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My 6th month was yesterday..... I have been at a steady stall for a month. I know it's my own doing. Not focusing on certain things. I still am at 1000-1200 cal a day and getting my Protein in. But I know that I need to shake things up and go back to the basics! With this being said.... its going to be a long holiday weekend with a strict diet but I know its worth it!! -
i can eat all the foods you can't lol I've lost 50 pounds this is my 3 month anniversary .. I'm kind of upset because I actually gained last week about 4 pounds but everyone I spoke to that had the surgery says that's normal because I'm eating more Protein... I couldn't eat anything when I first came home from the hospital or drink anything so now that I'm adding small amounts it seems like my body is holding on tight... my surgery was September 23rd and thus far as of this morning I had lost 50 pounds... a week ago I had lost 54 so I'll take it but I'm going to have to work harder... it looks like my body is trying to save everything that goes in my mouth

Returning to Protein drinks to get weight loss going....
KK66 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel desperate at this point. Stuck between 214-215 for what seems like weeks. Eating mostly protein, probably eating between 20-30 gms of Carbs (less most days) Trying to get all my fluids in (not reaching 60, but closer to 48) I am thinking perhaps of drinking protein drinks for 2 of my meals (breakfast and dinner) for a couple of weeks to see if that helps things along Has anyone tried this or a version of this to get the scale moving again? -
Returning to Protein drinks to get weight loss going....
KK66 replied to KK66's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, subbing a meal with a protein shake. I never thought I would utter those two words again after my pre and post op fluid diet, but alas, I need to get things going. -

New Whey Liquid Protein
JamieLogical replied to tony031469's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Collagen is a poor form of protein that is not absorbed well by the body. Also there is some belief that it is not beneficial to consume more than 30 grams of protein at any one time. It can be taxing on the kidneys and not fully absorbed. -
I'm currently emptying an Isopure tub, its eh, 50g Protein, 220 calories, 1g fat and i want to say 3g sugar? I could be wrong. You can half that and still be just fine. the equivalent 2 scoops of Muscle Milk light is, maybe 200 calories, 25g of protein and 2g sugar and 6g fat. I enjoyed the nectar chocolate as well, I might have to price check that since Isopure is $45 on sale for 3lbs

Newly banded, June 3
losinandlovin replied to Soybean's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congrats and best of luck as you start your journey. Let me respond and give you a few tips: The reason you are hungry is typically there is no fill in the band. The doctor is giving your body time to heal form surgery and for it to get use to something in there it is not accustomed to. You will probably get a little fill after about 3 - 4 weeks. Don't push food. DO EXACTLY what you have been told when you are suppose to. Hang in there a little longer on the diet they put you on. It is all about taking care of your body for the moment. The fills will come and you will do well. When you start the soft foods you will know how much to eat. I was actually given an amount to go by. Remember protein is the most important thing you need to get down. You will need to remember to CHEW< CHEW and then one more time CHEW. You will also need to make sure you are getting enough liquids. I know that sounds nuts since you are on a liquid diet right now but it is common to get full on the foods when you start back up and not get enough food. Listen to your body. As soon as you start to feel satisfied STOP EATING> THis is foreign to our former lives. Soon you will learn it is not about the food. The food becomes a thing you have to do to fuel your body. Conversation with friends becomes more important. You still can enjoy some wonderful meals, but it is not all about that. It is a learned thing and trust me it will happen for you. Exercise when you are released to. I followed the doctors orders and I am tell you, What a difference a little bit of exercise made. I can not stress to you how important it is for you to stick whatever the doctor says. Best of luck in your new journey. -
Unfortunately, you are basically in bandster hell. You really need to stick to the prescribed diet given to you by your doctor. You are in a healing phase to allow the sutures holding your band in place to heal properly. Eating solid food too soon can cause those sutures to break. Though you may not feel anything now, it could cause major problems later (band slippage, band removal). If you continue to be hungry, talk to your doctor to find out what you can add to help (protein drinks, yogurt). Please, don't eat solids before he allows. Good luck to you.

Researching the VSG...Needing reviews

A consult with a surgeon or even just an information session might address some of your concerns. I'll try to answer the questions I can. Will I be sick a lot afterwards?-throw up sick... There's no way to know in advance. I haven't thrown up once since my surgery 6 months ago. But some people have serious problems with nausea and vomiting. A woman who had her surgery the same day as me with the same surgeon was throwing up for MONTHS after surgery. So there is a real possibility, though I think it is fairly uncommon. I definitely had some moments of serious discomfort. It's a challenge to learn how your new stomach works and how much food you can safely eat without reaching the point of discomfort. It's a process and it gets easier over time. I am now over 6 months out and rarely have issues. Will I only lose in the beginning and then the weight stop? That's entirely up to you. If you stick to the plan (Protein first, getting all your Water, exercising, eating the right foods) then you will continue to lose. I have been a slow, but consistent loser. Will I have a lot of lose saggy skin? Maybe? Saggy or loose skin seems to depend a lot on age and genetics. There are a few things you can do to try to lessen the problem. Make sure you stay well hydrated. Moisturize daily. Do strength training to "fill in" loose areas with muscle where the fat used to be. And supplement with Vitamin C and Beef Gelatin. But in the grand scheme of things, what is a little loose skin compared to your health? Will I have hair loss? Probably. Most people lose at least some hair. Some people lose a LOT of hair. I started losing my hair about 3.5 months post-op, but it never got so bad that anyone besides me would notice. The hair loss slowed around 5 months post-op and now, at a little over 6 months post-op, I have lots of new hair growing back in. Again, this is a pretty trivial mater when the alternative is staying fat and risking your long-term health. Will I look older? I've seen this go either way. Some people actually look a lot younger post weight-loss. I think it's due to just taking more care in their overall appearance with their make-up and hair and what style clothing they wear. If you end up with a lot of sagging skin in your face and neck or a very thin face, it might make you look older. -
Hi Everyone! I was sleeved June 27th and I have only lost 25 lbs. Am I doing something wrong? I knew a stall was to be expected but it's been almost 5 weeks. I'm getting my protein and water in. I'm also working out. What else can I do?

Hi all! I was banded back in 2003, and it took me 2 years to reach my goal weight. Then came the great lap band slippage of 2005. I went for the corrective procedure and was told all was well, since then I have had nothing but trouble - I've regained 60lbs and can't seem to loose any of it. It's as though EVERYTHING I eat causes me to gain weight - even though my diet consists mostly of veggie Soup (cause its about all I can keep down) and I wake every night choking on reflux, not to mention the constant pain at the port site. So today i went back to my surgeon and as suspected, the band has slipped again. I've discussed my options with Dr.D and have decided the best plan for me is to remove the band and have the revision to a sleeve. Dr.D tells me that I have to remove the band, wait 3 months for my stomach to relax then have the sleeve done. I've tried to argue with him re; the 3 month rest period but considering he is the surgeon, and I have no idea about surgical matters, I didn't get very far in my attempts to get him to do the removal and sleeve in one surgery. Has anyone had the same experience - Band out, few months wait then sleeved? I'm so worried about the weight gain in those 3 months - can anyone share their story? Did you gain weight? How rapidly? Or how did you maintain your weight loss over that time? I'm not going to lie, this is terrifying me - so I thought I'd reach out to fellow banders for support!

Hello everyone, this is my first time posting and I am doing so because I just need a smidge of reassurance. I am in my 7th week since surgery, and I am having serious issues with eating and I have read some older posts from people like macmadame who went through the same thing as I am back in 2009 but I was just wondering if there are any more recent sleevers who are struggling as I am. I am NOT interested in food what so ever. I can get my liquids in fine but not food or Protein shakes. Why, because I get such a full feeling so fast that I am uncomfortable and well, beyond the full feeling. I do not vomit, but even after two bites, I could call it quits. MacMadame described it in a post as not being depressed about the feelings, but pissy and she could not have said it better. I am pissy. I have talked to two people that work with my doctor who say that this is normal, it takes longer for some people to lose the initial extreme restriction. Could take 2 - 6 months even. SERIOUSLY!!!??? Anyone else struggling to get their protein and/or food in general in in a day because they have no desire to eat and it makes them feel icky? I want to say nauseated, but it's not to the point where I get sick. I dread getting up each morning practically because I know that I am starting another day of trying to eat without feeling like crap afterwards. Please tell me there are others out there who have experienced what I am going through and that it will get better because I feel like I could crack. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

When Bad Habits Creep Back In After Weight Loss
Angela Sperry-Wenke posted a blog entry in Bypass Princess
I will be the first to admit that with getting back into the swing of life and work and a new love, it is easy to let those old bad habits creep back into our lives. We all fall victim to this in some sort or fashion and it is the one thing as weight loss patients that we fear. This is probably the one thing we fear the most that we will start up our old bad habits that got us to being overweight in the first place. I am about 16 months out and I am the first admit that I have allowed bad habits to sneak back into my life, not as bad as before surgery but regardless they did creep back in. My bad habits include soda, and occasional fast food. We call this the comfortable phase, you are now comfortable with how you have to live and eat post surgery and then life in general just happens and we can tend to slip back into those old habits. Alot of people suffer from this problem they lose all the weight then think “hey I can reward myself with a cookie, or stopping for fast food, or a soda” But I remember seeing a saying a long time ago that said we are not dogs, we do not need to reward ourselves with food and this is so true. Why do we always use food as a reward, or something to make us feel better. The truth is food is something we need to survive, it should not be used as reward. If you are thinking of having weight loss surgery, you need to understand that the surgery is not a cure all. Your mind is a powerful tool and is something we need to work on or it will sabotage our weight loss journey. The one thing I noticed is my bad habits creeping back in and I refuse to let them ruin my weight loss or rule my life. The most important thing to remember is that we will have trips and falls along the way, the difference is are you going to let this slips and falls define your new life or are you going to get up dust yourself off and start over. For me I am going back to putting protein first in my diet, being good about making sure I get my vitamins in and staying honest by providing a weekly food journal to give you all an idea on how much I eat and what I eat throughout the week. I had surgery this past Tuesday, home the next day. Not too much pain, just a bit by my bigger incision. But its tolerable. So far keeping all liquids down, no puking. I slept ok, but it hurts too bad to lie on my side. So sleeping on my stinks. But that's nothing. I will be back to work next Thursday. So for now, just walking, drinking my protein shakes and alot of water. Hope everyone else is doing well. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using BariatricPal mobile app

I had my surgery on Feb 26th, I am hungry. It is not in my head, it is truly a feeling. It seems that I am not satisfied even after drinking the Protein shakes that are suppose to fill you up. When is something going to kick in and I not feel the emptiness. This is not what I thought it would be. Another friend had the same surgery and she said, she wasn't hungry and could not eat. Well that isn't the case for me. What do I do now? Did I waste money. Whether it is insurance paying for this, I'm second guesting my decision. I never felt like this prior to the surgery. Is there anyone out there that feels my pain.

What are some protein supplements that don't have any taste? I don't mind a shake but I want to add more protein to my meals without changing the actual taste of the meal.

I think soup is your best option. Good Luck!

Oh boy, I feel your pain! I am also a week out and nothing to dull the hunger. I feel weak and light headed and also no very fond of sweets. I sneaked in some v8 spicy juice just to get a break from those protein drinks and it was a slice of heaven. I am buying a vitamix for the post surgery food so I can liquify and drink normal food only extremely pulverized.
