Hello everyone I am new here. I am 27 years old and I will be having Gastric Sleeve Surgery January 23, 2020 and I am so scared. I have a great support system but I want to hear advise from those who will be or have been through this journey. I am scared about not waking up, pain, and or complications. My kids birthday is a couple days afterwards so I guess this is weighing on me. No negative comments, like I said I am new to this. Thanks!

Anyone using NWWS Everett?
SpaceDust replied to journeygrl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Here's a high level list of what I talked about with Dr. Michaelson: How long have you been doing the procedure? How many have you done? What is your success rate? Rate of complications, and what sorts of complications? What can I expect from you throughout this process (availability to answer questions, meetings, etc)? What will be expected from me? Are there current or former patients I can speak with? What can I expect it to be like post surgery (time in facility, recovery time at home, diet, etc) assuming nothing unusual about my surgery? He told me to not hesitate to call if more questions came to me, and either he or his staff would do their best to address my concerns. -
Those of us who have decided not to tell.

Nobody can boss you! HA! It's a VERY tough choice to make in the first place, just to *have* the surgery. You know yourself better than anyone, and if you choose not to tell anyone, that's great. I told the world because I was so excited. If you need support, I will TOTALLY be yer pal! I had the surgery in Oct. 2007 with many complications in the first week. I've had no fill, but have lost over 80 lbs. Please know that, in my opinion, this surgery is totally worth it. In fact, I use my surgery date as my "second birthday". Let others tell you it's an "easy way out" but shrug them off. It's FAR from easy. You still have to eat right and exercise, and that is not easy! I wish you the BEST luck, and let me know if I can help you in anyway! -
I'm glad you got to spend the night with your babies Jessie. I know that had to feel wonderful! But I am worried about that fever! Whatever it is, and I know it's hard, go back in and get to the cause hun. I nearly died due to complications and while the separation from my child was hard, very hard, dying would have been so much harder on him! Have they done a barium swallow on you yet! It's a leak test, different than an xray or cat scan. That was what finally diagnosed mine. Keep us in the loop if you can. We all hate to see these stories, but now we are attached . We want to kow when you are out of the woods...I would bet you do too! As to the weight gain...I gained 40lbs the first six weeks. All from multiple surgeries, procedures and the IV fluids as well as the tpn feedings. That took a couple of weeks to get rid of but it does fall off. 8lbs is pretty normal and easy to get rid of. But I also understand your regrets. I still regret the risks I took. I don't know if that will ever fade.

Please don’t get lap band! I honestly can’t believe they do them anymore. So many complications and resurgery needed after. I thought they’d be removed from market by now.

vagus nerve with lapband surgery?
kyethra replied to bandedshopgirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The vagus nerve is cranial nerve (actually the longest cranial nerve) and I think the only part of it that would be near the band is the part that goes into the larynx and then all the other major organs including the esophagus and stomach. I don't know what you are asking exactly. If you have the vagus nerve stimulator I suggest you ask your neurologist about it (or psychiatrist) as they would know oh so much more than I would. I have no clue what if any impact or dangers the band would have on the nerve and thus the stimulator. I imagine it would be very little-- the nerve would not be cut into as the organs are not cut into there BUT I don't know where the nerve is I just have a vaugue idea. I don't know where it is in relation to the abdominal wall. And if the band wouldn't be a problem, what about complications, etc? So if you have or plan on getting the stimulator these are all questions and things you should bring up with the doctor who is doing that or who treats you regarding that condition ( I assume epilepsy or depression). I know it wouldn't be proper to do both surgeries at the same time. One is neurosurgery-- the vagus stimulator-- the other is bariatric. Two different surgeons. If you have issues of some sort with your vagus nerve I would ask your neurologist or psychiatrist about the band-- I have a damaged nerve ending and I needed to have my port on one side and not the usual side to avoid complications. And my brother's neurologist (he has epilepsy) can usually advice how his epilepsy, the diet to help control his siezures, or his epilepsy meds will effects other medical issues. So I'm not much help am 1? And if your doc doesn't know much about lap band, bring him or her a packet of info on it. Good luck! -

question for new sleevers
Anababy replied to marymary1234's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 2/28/14.. no complications. It's unfortunate your family isn't being supportive. People tend to fear the unknown. I would do some research online about the procedure as well as the surgeon performing it and present that to your family. Ultimately it is your decision. Joining this site was a step in the right direction for support. Hang in there and do what is best for you and your health. -
Revision done in one or two surgeries?
Bndtoslv replied to Jenpen197803's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I would ask. I've never heard of anyone spending the night for a removal. I suppose if it was very complicated you might. It was pretty easy except for where port was. -
I read a lot of research on this kind of surgery before even selecting the sleeve, and the epidural is recommended in the research literature, especially for bariatric patients. It enables the anesthesiologist to use less general anesthesia, so there are less complications. Obese persons tend to sequester general anesthesia in our fat, so it takes longer for us to excrete it and wake up. So the epidural reduces that problem. My epidural line was left in for almost the entire time I was there, and I received pain medication through it. It was so easy and very effective. I assure you, I walked around most of the time throughout the days, and never had any numbness. It is not a "spinal", it is in a different "compartment than a spinal". I would do it again. Trust Dr Aceves. He knows what he is doing. You will be so happy that you chose his program.

Epidural with Dr Aceves
Tiffykins replied to maxcat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Due to complications I had with anesthesia back in June, I am actually asking my surgeon tomorrow if he'll consider using an epidural on me for my gallbladder removal surgery that I'm having. I had one when I had my c-section. It wore off quickly, and I was up and walking within a couple of hours. -
You need to do what you feel is right for YOU! It's great that your hubby is supportive; it sucks that your parents don't support you. However, I'm betting your folks are more worried about losing you than really intending to be negative about the surgery. If it's truly important to you to have your parents' support, then show them the statistics for death and complications and explain how low they are. I've read that you're in more danger driving every day than having the sleeve, yet we all still get in our cars daily. Once you're post-op and doing well, I'm sure your parents will come around, even if you don't choose to show them the stats.

does this post-op diet sound crazy?
Carole65 replied to justdance's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dear rosiegirl, Dr. Roslin did mine and my sisters surgery too. Hers in sept. Mine on Oct 20, I spent 11 days in the hospital, had some complications, so once I could eat which was 5 days after surgery, he put me on a mushy pureed food, I thought it strange and my Mom called Debbie his asst. And then for the ray of the time I ate nothing but yogurt and cream of wheat. Tomorrow I will be 3 weeks out, so hopefully I can change it up a little. Take care -
Blood clotting disorders and the sleeve ? and Vitamins
TiffanyLM posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have a genetic blood clotting disorder and am wondering if I could have complications after my sleeve surgery because of it. anyone else who has had the sleeve have blood clotting disorder? my doctors don't seem concerned but my mom is very worried (that's what moms do lol) hoping to ease some of her worries and I'm not gunna lie mine too lol. also I was wondering about Vitamins I will have to take afterwards. -
It's better to quit now then have surgery and try to eat past your sleeve and risk serious complications. I remember reading another post where someone who was a nurse told the story of someone a week out of surgery eating a half chicken then dying from the complications. This is a serious lifestyle change and if you're not ready to commit then don't do it. I wish you all the best of luck in whatever journey you decide to take.

omg - i am so sorry you've been through such a rough time ... honest, I thought I had it rough in the hospital (the other people who had surgery the same day as me seemed to have had an easier time recovering than me) but it sounds like you really had a rough time .. I'm so sorry! Did your sister have any complications after her surgery? I really am hoping you are feeling better every day ... I will say a prayer for you & keep you in my thoughts. keep me posted. -

Any first hand experiences would be appreciated. What type of surgery did you have? What is your medical complication(s) that you are diagnosed with? What are your treatment options and what did you choose. Any medical referrals or resources in your area that you would recommend? your experience/story if you feel comfortable sharing -
85% of my stomach remove (sleeve)
Beltran01 replied to Beltran01's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Doctor said that a reinforced gastric sleeve is to prevent bleeding and staple-line leak, which are the most common complications. They first staple the sleeve and then sew it. -
Sorry You Did it?
hungryforchange replied to mitchell255's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've seen and read thread after thread with this same exact title and don't think I have seen one person say they regretted it. Even people who had complications said they would do it all over again. -
I am only 2 weeks out and still trying to get my Lap Band legs so to speak. I have lost 10 lbs in the last two weeks. And yes I would do it again. I have had a very good recovery though with minimal complications. :whoo:

Any one not have pre-op diet???
BaraaMehdar replied to christi.jones08's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
my doctor didn't ask for a pre-operative diet neither and he is on of the best in Jeddah he did the surgery for 3 of my friends without any complications nor pre-operative diets i guess it is just optional or depending on the patients liver size and the amount of fatty tissue in the abdominal cavity
